University of Missouri Curators Vote 4-2 to Fire Melissa Click

I have mixed feelings.

On one hand, I oppose outrage firings, even if someone did something wrong. A person's life and value is more than just a few seconds caught on video, or social media.

On the other hand: It is the left that pushes this regime of Outrage Firing and Scalp Hunting, and they will never tire of the practice so long as it is permitted to be something that applies to their enemies only.

No one ever notices the unfairness of something that is visited only upon their enemies -- but they're damn quick to notice it when it falls upon themselves.

So I guess my mixed feelings lean towards the "Fire the vile woman" side of things.

However, I will say, as I think it is important to say: Given our Brave New World where every bad moment we have is ever more likely to "go viral" and be known around the country, if not the world, is is imperative we begin developing Mental Armor against Outrage and adopt a laissez-faire attitude towards others' viral trespasses. Assuming that we can have this same laissez-faire attitude applied to ourselves.

But until the left agrees to this truce and stops its perpetual outraging and SJW scalp hunting, it is important that the left suffer from it as well, particularly in cases, as we no doubt have here, of someone who is very much in favor of Outrage Firings For Others.

Maybe Melissa Click will learn something from her firing and emerge a more generous individual as regards other people's right to speak and believe freely. I doubt it, but we can at least hope for that.

Counter-Argument: Click should be fired because an angry, rigid dogmatist can simply not fulfill the functions required of an academic.

12 Nah, it's an easy call.

She was in a position of authority over that student and she called for his assault (which I think constitutes assault in and of itself). It's really an easy call to fire someone who bullies young people when her entire profession involves working with young people. Add on top of that that it's a state university and my only question is what took them so long.

She did tremendous damage to her employer.

36 Unlike the outrage firings (or coerced resignations) against, e.g., Eich of that browser I used to use, Click demonstrated a pattern of antisocial and unprofessional behavior.

She could advocate her position while maintaining control of her emotions. All professionals, but especially role models like teachers, should have some level of poise, bearing, professionalism. Click demonstrated she lacks these qualities, repeatedly, even after she knew she was on thin ice.

With that understood, this really wasn't an outrage firing. It's a simple failure to meet the expected minimum threshold of civility in conduct. For which people get fired irrelevant of politics.

She used her position as a faculty member to incite violent action against a student who was within his rights to be where he was and do what he was doing.

She gave the university's imprimatur to violent suppression of ideas she personally doesn't care for. Reason enough to fire. I think this is more than just outrage, it's misconduct by a professor against a student. You know that if a conservative-ish professor wanted a BLM or feminist removed from his classroom by force he/she would have been suspended on the spot.

Also, she was paid $300K and very publicly helped the university receive a marked decline in allum donations. Doesn't make financial sense to keep her employed.

91 I agree with the general point about outrage firing, both that they're not a good system, and that so long as the left pursues it they should suffer under it.

Melissa Click was not fired for advocating a political or social position. She was fired for advocating assault. Equating her firing to "outrage firings" whitewashes (I denounce myself) the true extent of how objectively heinous her action were.

Witch-hunts that actually, y'know, find and neutralize an actual witch are legit. Especially when there are few or no collateral casualties.

As applies here: She did what she was accused of, the institution had grounds, and did what it had to in order to defend itself from a loose cannon. No ginned-up persecution there. Except maybe what ex-Prof. Click was engaged in.

Yes that. I don't think this deserves the mantle of "Outrage Firing," because that lends credibility to the suggestion that the punishment did not fit the crime. Here, if anything, she got off light and late.

Posted by: 0302 at February 25, 2016 03:49 PM (hDDgx)

99 There's some confusion here. She's not being fired for being a demented leftist idiot. Its not her politics or her beliefs that are causing this loss of a job, they all agree with her and cheer her on.

Its her actions that got her fired, not just calling for violence on a reporter and student, but several other, previous activities and a pattern of unstable, violent, lunatic behavior.

This isn't a twitter mob forcing someone out of a job for having unpopular opinions, she earned this firing.

Maybe so but in my old line of work if you ever got fired at one place you would never work and a similar job again. It was a close knit community. That is why in almost all cases a person was "invited to resign".
Also it depended on what you got fired for. If it was a drug related offense federal law barred you from similar jobs 5 years minimum for maryjane, lifetime for hard drugs.

I am certain she would have a difficult time getting a real job. She'll probably have to settle for another job babysitting/indoctrinating college students.

I was always taught, when I am even remotely involved in something that is linked with an employer - and doing something like this on the college campus of which she worked counts - that she is to consider herself as a representative of the university, and the faculty - and behave appropriately.

This will be a hard lesson for her to learn - assuming she is intelligent enough to learn from this. But sometimes these lessons need to be taught - and learned by the hardway.

No sympathies here.

164 "36 Unlike the outrage firings (or coerced resignations) against, e.g., Eich of that browser I used to use, Click demonstrated a pattern of antisocial and unprofessional behavior.

Posted by: 0302 at February 25, 2016 03:41 PM (hDDgx)"

This sums my opinions up rather succinctly. Click wasn't a casualty of her ideology, but rather of her methodology. As a communications professor, her actions repeatedly set a horrible example for anyone wanting to engage in the public exchange of ideas. She damaged her own side by putting a face on the academic left's totalitarian tendencies, and their aversion towards equal free speech.

Those on the left speak a big game about their love of tolerance, but they do not live it. Click's intolerant values and those of her compatriots are strangely a comfort to me, as they show the ultimate weakness of their core ideology. A true pluralist is secure in what he believes in. He believes in open discussion for it hones his own thoughts, insulates against stagnation and provides for a stronger society as a whole.

Melissa Click proved that she was not worthy of the privilege to guide our young adults into the world as a whole and as such, I support the firing.

The thing to learn is to disagree with ideas, not people. You can love someone and disagree what they say and argue against. You can ague against their position without attacking them - and that's how intellectually mature, honest people should behave.

166 This seems to be an antiquated notion, but at almost every job I've had I've had to sign an employee conduct agreement. These agreements typically included something that references conduct outside of work -- basically, that they don't want me to embarrass the company by doing something illegal/outrageous that might reflect badly on the company (this would be grounds for termination).

While I am not all-in with the outrage culture of destroying someone's life over one bad tweet or donating to the "wrong" political cause (see Mozilla guy), an employer should be able cut ties with someone if their non-work activities have a tangible, negative impact on them. Click's behavior did reflect poorly on Mizzou, and I've read that allum donation are down.

Problem is I think if it goes unexplained, they view this as eye for an eye, and the wheel keeps turning.

We need to get somebody fired for a video of them burning a flag 10 years ago, or tearing up a Bible, or mocking gun owners or hunters, or whatever else. These would not normally be fire-able offenses, but for the outrage pitchfork and torch mob. We need to get people fired for their non-criminal opinions that are deemed safe by employer handbooks but for the typhoon of shit unrelated third parties create.

In contrast, Click's behavior would have been fireable if she'd taken that tact apolitically - with a waiter, a gate agent, a cashier, a neighbor, whoever. It was objectively unacceptable.

I do believe the distinction's important. I do believe turnabout is fair play, and want to see outrage firings of lefties (besides the woman who disrespected Arlington) in an effort to create public fatigue as to the practice; but we're not accomplishing it if we only settle for scalps that should have been taken without the mob.

And when confronted with it, Trump's allies on this site deflected.

and you seem to be focusing on the sins of the father. OK. Thats the standard now? Cruz's dad fought with a commie

Nope. But when Donald was confronted with it, he denied it happened even though it was clear he knew it did (Daily Mail article). And his supporters on this site told me that the Klan was just ubiquitous then. In NYC, I guess.

So I guess it was OK.

It's one thing if she had merely spouted off her views on twitter/facebook/a public space.

But she was at her place of employment, screaming about free speech, and asking for someone to physically prevent another person from engaging in free speech.

And I'm beginning to be all out of sads for people who do stupid, then pay the price. When the left can make up bogus accusations and take people to court, or have them arrested, and impact their daily life in a real, fiscal and physical way, then they really need to eat that same poop sandwich they are shoving down others throats.

Given her apparent, In-Your-Face activism, there's surely a boatload of exhibitions wherein she wasn't captured on film. (I had professors who prohibited classroom recordings, and that was some time ago. It wasn't to mask political bias but to limit absenteeism. However, with new media and SJW, I could see trying to limit records of in-class activism now.) Furthermore, there's her radicalized DNA that, while not always a frothing speech, manifests itself in more masked hostilities in the classroom.

She is not an educator. She is a radical. She should not be on the public dole teaching students. She is anti-Free Speech. She is the antithesis of education. She is fire-worthy.

229 AmishDude - I am going to disagree with you though I share your general opinion regarding Trump. To my understanding, Trump didn't actively court him and has not cited his support. If that is the case, I see no reason why he must denounce him. I tire of this idea you must denounce people or things who are considered bad (and in this case are bad) just to show the world that you do not agree with them. I suppose there are exceptions, but they should be exceptions. It seems like the expectation is that this should be the norm.

In general, a political candidate doesn't have to reject every loser nobody who endorses them. But David Duke isn't a nobody and Donald Trump feels free to opine on anything, without bounds.

It wouldn't take much. It could be a carefully-written press release. A short one. It could even be a tweet.

269 yeah... consevatives calling other conservative racists is totes fucking AOK....Posted by: fixerupper at February 25, 2016 03:50 PM (8XRCm)

By definition, a conservative is one who supports conservative positions and candidates, which Trump is not,so Trump supporters cannot be accused of conservativism, but it also follows that an unsolicitedDavid Duke endorsement is not evidence of racism since Duke, notoriously batshit crazy and evil, could just as easily have endorsed Zombie Robert Byrd; hence, neither Trump nor his supporters can be labeled as racists on that account, either.

More seriously, Don Black, Stormfront founder, endorsed Ron Paul. That alone didn't make Ron Paul a racist. It was Paul's 'The Animals Are Coming' screeds he wrote for Holocaust denier Willis Carto's 'Spotlight' magazine, along with his thinly veiled references to 'Neocons' and 'Zionists' that made him suspect in that regard.

I do think Trump needs topublicly repudiatehis support among the Stormfront crowd. Trump denigrates, demeans and insultsjust about everyone else. It would be nice if he did it to real-deal bad guys for once.

273 So a dubious robocall claims to be a David Duke endorsement, to the contrary of Duke's previous stated positions re: Trump.
----------------------------

“Voting for these people, voting against Donald Trump at this point is really treason to your heritage,” Duke said on the David Duke Radio Program Wednesday, referring to Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. “I’m not saying I endorse everything about Trump, in fact I haven’t formally endorsed him. But I do support his candidacy, and I support voting for him as a strategic action. I hope he does everything we hope he will do.”

Duke then urged his followers to call Trump's campaign headquarters to volunteer.

The greatest mistake this country made was in not fully purging leftists from our society in the 50s...especially those rich, northeastern, influential, "elites" that poisoned our society over the following years. Leftism can not coexist with a free society.

IF we ever reestablish rule of law in this country, it will be another mistake to not consider that as fact, and the weaknesses we have shown in dealing with that in the past.

The place to give some leeway on outbursts is a scenario where a professor gets angry at a librarian for losing a book. This is my
problem with her behavior. She wanted to strong arm a student journalist

He's just explaining the steps taken to get to "good, I'm glad she's fired."

The impulse to see someone you disagree with lose their job for attempting to participate in a public discussion isn't the root cause, is all he's saying.

The national prominence of her little jackbooted fantasy and the trouble it caused for the university is the proximate cause, actually.

But Ace's point is that conservatives don't do this to leftists. It all flows one way. Even in this case it took months of dithering to get to this point. These are your rules. You made this bed, bitch. Sweet dreams.

Again, Click doesnt' deserve to be fired because she said something politically incorrect or offensive. She was asking for a cameraman in a public place on campus to be physically assaulted.

Amongst other things, that's a criminal offense.

If she had punched the cameraman herself, wouldn't that merit being fired? Admittedly this is a bit lesser than that; the cameraman left BEFORE being physically assaulted, but conceptually its the same thing. .

In addition to above, Click has ALSO proven that she isn't tolerant of dissenting views, and that's a pretty good reason for her to be removed from a so-called "academic" place.

448 That aside, Click committed a crime - and she tried to commit an even
bigger one. For that alone she deserves to be shitcanned. For the fact
that she's nothing more than a mockery of academia to begin with she
also should be shitcanned.

I have no sympathy for Click, at all. She deserves more punishment than she is going to get
===

This.

This is not some firing because Click said something offensive. This is because she's a faculty member (however adjunct), and she called for someone on campus to be physically assaulted.

She's an embarrassment to the university, a PR problem, and frankly, a legal one too

Bluntly, I'm not even sure why there is a discussion about this. In any other setting, someone like this would have been shown the door instantly. How "rigorous" her particular academic credentials or accomplishments are here, are totally irrelevant.

Isn't Rubio a lawyer? Anyway.

I missed his "kill the humanities" thing. Did he mean in general, or in "educational" settings? Didn't Japan just basically do that recently - eliminate most humanities studies from university-level education? (OK, shame on me for not looking into it myself) Of course they may have done it for the wrong reasons. Japan's "elite" complex (govt./media/academia) is just as toxically stupid, generally, as ours, on most topics.

537 grey fox, I've heard those arguments myself

on the one hand, I concede the point that yes, you can definitely read literature and history by yourself, and that this is a good idea

but you can also study mathematics by yourself, and apparently a great deal else. it's only when you need expensive lab equipment that the economies of scale attainable by a university start to matter

but it's ignorance to claim that professional historians and readers of literature have no valuable knowledge or skills to teach in a classroom -- they do

it's just that so much of that has been given the boot by people who want to be political activists more than they want to be professors

You can cherry pick any heinous person on the planet, repeat that they support Cruz/Trump/Rubio, etc. and have the same result. What if Charlie Manson favors Cruz, should Cruz stop what he's doing and denounce him immediately? Why would Trump/Cruz/Rubio have to constantly play the "denouncing" game? Why should Trump even given Duke the time of day? Hell, why not bribe Duke to say he supports Rubio, and get him off the stage, if that's all it takes? If Trump palled around with Duke, or sings his praises, then you've got a legit concern.

For the love of Gawd, Obama got his start in the living room of a domestic terrorist! Obama praised black racists, i.e. the "white privilege crowd" i.e. Prof. Derrick Bell. I DEMAND that the left renounce their cries of white privilege as the racism as it is. I'll be over here holding my breath....

545 She, at the very least, pushed a camera away so that the photographer couldn't take a picture. It's possible that she actually knocked the camera out of the photographer's hands. She is being charged for assault. It would certainly be reasonable to ask that the assault charge be resolved at trial one way or the other, but she is not being fired because she has done something outrageous; she is being fired because there's a good chance that she has committed a crime.

Posted by: Iowa Jim at February 25, 2016 04:52 PM (ekIVI)

546 I'm reasonably sure the main reason they canned Click was the state legislature was proposing to cut about $8 million from UM's budget if they didn't dump her.

548 Feh, no, I propose we discuss our grant application in a ramen-ya down in Fukuoka, where I have yet to visit, and is reputed to have a great distinctive style of ramen.

Grey Fox, I didn't follow the humanities thing, I was just saying that if some are calling to cut the whole area back much as one amputates a gangrenous limb, I'd understand. Humanities (and history) are central - indeed it's their very corruption that is key part of our degradation and predicament.

Mortimer, hilarious! Though I am hesitant to speak of dead/banned, trumpetdaddy actually exhibited a trait our Amish friend has been showing lately - this curious, paradoxical combo of extreme disdain and lack of substantive heft. Oh hell, let's throw in Hollowpoint, who's actually re-appeared lately.

People whose comments are very strident, disdainful, insulting, absolutely confident - yet who, when they stray into any actual substantive detail about serious subjects, exhibit little understanding. Usually this comes out when apologias for the GOP's disastrous performance in DC is being discussed.

AmishDude (and a number of other folks here) are apparently of the opinion that nothing except the hard sciences have either intellectual rigor or any usefulness to a society. I seen someone seriously propose eliminating history as a major on the basis that you can just learn it on your own time by reading books. Lots of people cheering Japan's move to eliminate all non-STEM degrees, too.
Posted by: Grey Fox at February 25, 2016 04:44 PM (bZ7mE)

Unless it's the history of 50 shades of grey. Because there are classes like that-

Real history, actual history is wonderful. But universities seem to want to "sex" it up to make it attractive to low functioning students these days.

My kid just finished Western Civ last semester. She made the only A in the class, and I will tell you, she is no history student. But she grew up over seas, with us dragging her to every ruin/museum/dig we could get to. She absorbed it, and began to get a feel for it. Most of the kids in her class had no idea of what was going on. She was disgusted with them. And she's a stem major.

550 Someone who does not understand the full meaning of the First Amendment and cannot overcome their emotions enough to act on that meaning has no business teaching in a university - especially on communications and on the media.

552 Also, I clicked one of the links to refresh my memory of the incident. Geez, she looks exactly like a cliche, liberal womyn who works on a college campus. If she were going to a Halloween party as a gender studies instructor, she'd have nailed it. There's something so boring about the way these women dress. It's as if they really do believe that most men will rape them at the drop of a hat.

553 I get it, regarding wanting to resist to the outrage firing thing, bu this is different.

IN THIS CASE IT WAS BLATANT MALPRACTICE.

It's like having a ship captain who intentionally tries to sink the ship.

In contrast, I actually sort of LIKE that Trump's spokesperson WASN'T fired, after some anti-white racist tweets from a few years ago. were uncovered. She's absolutely great at her job! I don't like her, "as a person", so I don't want to hang out or anything, but capitalism is about people working together productively even if they DON'T LIKE each other, and freedom means being able to say stuff that offends others.

Posted by: Optimizer at February 25, 2016 05:21 PM (/q6+P)

554 She's a monster who assaulted a student and tried to justify using violence and coercion wholesale against those who support and defend the Constitution.

Traitors like her deserve exile or a rope. She's lucky she only got fired.

561 Ace,

Divorce the political side of it for a moment. Focus on the economics. If you had a driver who for the third time in a row destroyed a truck out of wanton neglect would you not bite the bullet and fire their butts?? I know I would.

Well M. Click has done UoMo massive harm. Recruitment is down 6% much suspected of the bad press generated. It is most telling from report in that valuable 'out of state' segment where the academic fees are higher.

If you have a bad employee impacting the bottom line you have to get rid of them.

563 Sorry, you missed the whole point. This is NOT an "outrage firing" or at least it should not be. She assaulted a student and encouraged others to do the same. Not only is this a crime, it lays an axe at the root of the academic relationship. My only wonderment is that it took so long to get the job done and two of the six votes went her way.

Posted by: Dr. Todd at February 25, 2016 09:50 PM (NBjCB)

564 Click's worst crime? The school had lost some football recruits because of her 'notoriety'. As the mustached Petes of yesteryear would say, "It's just business."
