Black Opinion Leaders Starting to Endorse Bernie

Not many, and of course Hillary has all the Establishment shills lined up, but people outside the CBC and official black advocacy groups are starting to Feel the Bern.

1. Boring, overpraised blogger Ta-Nehisi Coates announced a couple of weeks back that while he is not endorsing Sanders, he will in fact be voting for Sanders.

I don't understand that distinction, but I'm sure that Ta-Nehisi Coates can and eventually will spin a turgid 13,000 word think piece on the crucial distinction, and also explain that the entire concept of an "endorsement" is a racial construct like Whiteness Itself.

2. Spike Lee has cut a radio ad for "Brother Bernie."

3. Van Jones drops a line I've been waiting for someone to drop for two months -- Bernie Sanders was fighting for civil rights at the same time Hillary Clinton was a presumably-racist Goldwater Girl. I don't think he's endorsing Sanders, but this is a telling and persuasive observation. I know, because I found it telling and persuasive when I thought of it two months ago. I told it to myself, and I persuaded myself.

Hillary's counting on the black vote to come out for her almost monolithically, to save her in South Carolina (remember, they vote this coming week on the Democrat side) and the south generally.

But what if the black vote should begin splitting something like merely 60/40 for Clinton?

Doom, I tell you. Doom.

Also see this useful Ed Driscoll post noting that Spike Lee is talking up the economic misery blacks have suffered under Obama. Quite a long way from his previous ejaculatory boosterism, no?

I am here before a black audience, but I am telling you what I believe is good for the people of this country and you are people of this country.

These economic policies will make us richer, and richer is better for everyone.

These defense policies will keep us safer, and safe is good for everyone.

I refuse to pitch my message toward a group because I am told that black people, or lesbians, or left-handers, or ginger midgets think differently than other people, or that what is good for them is different from what is good for all of us."

If they don't like Hilly, and they don't turn up for the general, she takes a big hit. And they simply won't turn out like they did for Gaylord.

If Trump does (even relatively) well with black voters, that compounds the issue.

A friendly word:

Please don't take a post that happens to be about black voters as some kind of invite to just start racializing every comment. Yes, we can make every comment about 30-year-old controversies like Ebonics, and all the other things we can think of about black stereotypes.

Or, we could just sort of treat the post as being about the election generally, with no particular imperative to start unloading the old Black Joke Book.

It's a very weird thing when someone just says the words "black voters" and then 50% of the comments have some kind of a racial angle about that (and certainly none of them positive).

Just please cool it.

263 It was clear that this hearing did not go the way the plaintiffs' lawyers and DOJ had tried to arrange it to go. They thought the fix was in. In fact, it went so badly, particularly with DOJ being called on the carpet by Judge Leon, that at the end when the plaintiffs' lawyer got up to try to repair all the holes that Kobach had knocked in their case, the lawyer tried to compare the EAC action to Nazi Germany. He waved the EAC opinion at issue in the air and said "this is what Nazis do behind closed doors!" You know a lawyer is desperate when he tries to equate a dispute over an election administration issue to Nazi Germany.

Most of these "thought" or "opinion" leaders are there by way of celebrity status. I think Rush touched on this once when Meryl Streep or some actress was called up to the senate to testify about something because she played a farmer's wife in a hit movie.

342 Re more on the Apple crap: Reading some more (Denninger for one), there is apparently a little hole in the encryption. Remember, the iPhone holds the strong encryption key on chip in a secure matter. The 4-digit passcode is what "unlocks" the phone and allows it to pull that key to decrypt the data.

Well, according to Denninger there is proof that the damn thing (at least before a certain version, and this includes the terrorist/San Bernardino county phone) actually pulls that key and gets some data before the passcode is entered.

If that is true, then a cold booted phone pulls the key and should have it "live" exposed via sophisticated monitoring of the circuits.

IOW, the phone defeats its own supposed PIN code lockdown, and does decrypt some data before that PIN is entered. If so, then the key is exposed and some unencrypted data is fetched and live.

Now, if the FBI was a good as they would be in some high tech spy thriller, they would have all they need to decrypt eveything without Apple's help.

The NSA could do that. Those who build Death Star data facilities in the Utah desert that consume more electric power than Salt Lake City should have that capability.

This is further proof that a) the FBI is looking for a precedent to gain routine backdoor access and/or b) the FBI is a bunch of bumbling Female Body Inspector bros

We watched Dope recently, coming out of Forest Whitaker's production company.

Overhyped and sent the wrong message imho. Started out charming with likable characters then, meh.
Posted by: artisanal 'ette

I saw Forest Whitaker's recent film "Repentance" and thought it was quite good; even more significantly, I felt it was the exact kind of film that people like Spike Lee COULD be and SHOULD be making, but aren't.

Basically, "Repentance" is a "black film," in that all of the characters with speaking parts are black. All of them. But unlike either the insulting diatribes of Spike Lee of the stupid violence of blaxsploitation or lame drugs-n-sex humor of "ghetto comedies," that was an all-black film in which the blackness was incidental; in other words, it's not about "blackness" at all. It's just a good film in which race is irrelevant.

It's a better-than-average psychological thriller in which there's no need or reason for any of the characters to be black - but the producers (who actually were white) just decided to cast black actors in roles that under normal Hollywood rules would all be played by white actors.

THIS is how to eliminate racism and racial tension in America: Make the color of the actors unimportant. Don't make every scene involving a black person to revolve around or be conscious of "blackness."

I could imagine a room full of KKK members watching "Repentance" and come out of the theater praising it not even realizing that every character was black.

That's how to do it.

Isn't that just "law enforcement"?

If somebody is doing something illegal, why doesn't law enforcement get to swoop in and enforce the laws?

A group of people are operating a meth lab, law enforcement gets a warrant and investgates, asks questions, makes arrests, etc.

A meat packing plant is suspected of hiring hundreds of illegals, gets a warrant, and investigates.

Is anyone going to be wrongfully deported?

They both unashamedly stole most of their schtick from other, more talented filmmakers. Lee from early Scorsese (and a bit from Laughton in The Night Of The Hunter), Tarantino from Kubrick (The Killing, with a healthy dollup of cheese from shitty genre films). The difference is that Tarantino pretty much admits it. Lee's too much of a self-important fucktard to admit that his career is based on perpetuating some of the worst stereotypes about black folks, while imitating the style of white filmmakers.

If enough movies came out in which there were all-black or majority-black casts in films which in no way mentioned race, but which were high-quality science fiction or horror or comedy or whatever, then after a while there would no longer even be a "false premise" because no one would automatically expect an all-black film to be either racialized, poorly made, or targeting only a black audience.

The two Matrix sequels did a pretty good job with that. Majority black/minority casts for the humans, and race wasn't a factor at all in the story. How they got Cornel West to do a cameo in such a race-neutral film series, I dunno.

Of course, the examples really breaks down when you try to fit them into the "high-quality science fiction" slot. Ugh.

416 Nevergiveup - in the previous thread you stated you have nothing to hide... Really? Why do you have shades on your windows then?

If you have nothing to hide why do you use a nickname here (which - by the way - technically is a federal crime). Surely you have no objections to posting your home address - any valuables your personally possess, when you'll next be absent from said premises, the number of your bank account, the pin number on your Debit card, your social security number, the numbers, expiration date, and CVN on all your credit cards etc. You have nothing to hide so why not publish all of that.

The point is - you do have a lot to hide, and so does everyone else. All of that needs to be hidden - which is why we have encryption - and why that encryption has to be strong. And, as the government has repeatedly proven, it cannot be trusted to keep your personal information secure - so it has to be kept from them too.

I do not know about that. I remember reading an article in the 90s I think about how pre 80's, blacks were making advances in income improvement, eductation levels, homeownership, etc. But the author said two things might have derailed that: introduction of crack cocaine and the emergence of Rap. Not the songs themselves but the gangster culture that went with them.

I found that argument compelling. Certainly we have seen what the past 50 years has done in essentially dismantling a lot of the culture (and I am talking mainstream culture) in place and how things have been turning out.

You noticed that too? You're right about how rapidly they found something that reflects positively on Bernie (and helps him with a key D voting bloc) compared to their lack of curiosity regarding Obama's past.

What also occurred to me is that suddenly it's OK to mention the white Jewish contribution to the civil rights movement, which was not insignificant. By the late 1960's, militant blacks had turned on their former Jewish allies (I recall reading some juvenile Black Panther jingles about "Jew Boy, Jew Boy with that beanie on your head, Jew Boy, Jew Boy wish you were dead" in a history of the '60's a while back.) Radical blacks sided with the Palis and did not want to be reminded that they had been helped by whites, specifically Jews. And anti-semitism has always been a light sleeper in certain black circles (Remember "Hymietown")

Oh, leftist Jews forgave the blacks everything. But the truth is most blacks have not been taught that many whites, including Jews, helped them during the 1960's - that ruins The Narrative of Racisssst Whitey.

That element might not flee to Rubio or Cruz, but it might flee to Trump if Bernie starts peddling the reparations crap.

Posted by: Grump928(C) says Free Soothie! at February 23, 2016 06:23 PM (rwI+c)

My guess would be that google is limiting checks on any searches for legal immigration. This makes sense because the only people who use the phrase "legal immigration" are trying to make a distinction between legal and illegal. Not too many of those on the pro-amnesty crowd.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 23, 2016 06:28 PM (iHjB5)

It could also be that when talking of legal immigration you are just using immigration and then just differentiating it from illegal immigration. For instance saying "I'm for reducing all immigration not just illegal immigration." That's not likely to get a hit.

577 While the Border Patrol has apprehended tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors illegally entering the United States in recent years, fewer than one in 27 have been sent home, Sen. Jeff Sessions 80%
revealed Tuesday.

Speaking at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing examining the ongoing border surge of illegal immigrant minors, Sessions said that although 127,193 unaccompanied minors have been apprehended in the past 2.5 years, just 4,860 have been returned home.

And so what weve done is we only have about three 3.5 percent of people apprehended being returned home. What message does that send? Sessions said.

The search engines night correct it for you but the "http://" is unnecessary and only serves to confuse the engines.

Further, ace.mu.nu is only the front page so I'm not sure how some engines would differentiate between these (though the front page archives do come in under ace.mu.nu).

I'm sure the KGB has a few snapshots.

Every time I think of Bern and his bride in the USSR I am reminded of PJ O'Rourke's great article "Ship of Fools" about a boat cruise down the Volga he took with a bunch of lefties in the 1980's. The cruise was sponsored by the Nation. They were just Bernie's kind of crowd.

622 Infections by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii are widely prevalent in humans and animals in Brazil. The burden of clinical toxoplasmosis in humans is considered to be very high. The high prevalence and encouragement of the Brazilian Government provides a unique opportunity for international groups to study the epidemiology and control of toxoplasmosis in Brazil. Many early papers on toxoplasmosis in Brazil were published in Portuguese and often not available to scientists in English-speaking countries. In the present paper we review prevalence, clinical spectrum, molecular epidemiology, and control of T. gondii in humans and animals in Brazil. This knowledge should be useful to biologists, public health workers, veterinarians, and physicians. Brazil has a very high rate of T. gondii infection in humans. Up to 50% of elementary school children and 50-80% of women of child-bearing age have antibodies to T. gondii. The risks for uninfected women to acquire toxoplasmosis during pregnancy and fetal transmission are high because the environment is highly contaminated with oocysts. The burden of toxoplasmosis in congenitally infected children is also very high. From limited data on screening of infants for T. gondii IgM at birth, 5-23 children are born infected per 10 000 live births in Brazil. Based on an estimate of 1 infected child per 1000 births, 2649 children with congenital toxoplasmosis are likely to be born annually in Brazil. Most of these infected children are likely to develop symptoms or signs of clinical toxoplasmosis. Among the congenitally infected children whose clinical data are described in this review, several died soon after birth, 35% had neurological disease including hydrocephalus, microcephaly and mental retardation, 80% had ocular lesions, and in one report 40% of children had hearing loss. The severity of clinical toxoplasmosis in Brazilian children may be associated with the genetic characteristics of T. gondii isolates prevailing in animals and humans in Brazil

623 Blacks who are at the bottom of the economic scale continue to vote for a party that keeps them there. Beyond stupid. Spike Lee is looking for handouts for the handout crowd. Sanders is almost done.

627 Eh. These three guys are mostly intellectual housepets for upper-class white liberals. Doubt their endorsements carry much weight in the larger black community.

628 If the Republican Party were not entirely stupid, they might try running ads on black radio stations in states with open primaries urging blacks to vote for Ben Carson in the primary. If nothing else, it would diminish some of the cooties factor about voting Republican in other elections and it would give black voters an alternative to the geriatric white people in the Democratic primary.

Perhaps the Republican Party itself cannot run such ads but surely the people who wasted $100 million on the Jeb Bush campaign could come up with a few bucks to run some relatively cheap radio ads.
