Ted Cruz Asks Communications Director To Resign After False Claim About Rubio Demeaning the Bible

Narrative for breakfast, Narrative for lunch, Narrative for dinner.

The Establishment and the Rubio camp-- but I repeat myself -- have cooked up a narrative that Cruz just "lies" all the time.

This, despite the fact that Rubio and his supporters dissemble every time Rubio's actual position and statements on amnesty, DACA, and border security come up.

But that's the Narrative. It's a tissue of lies, but so are most Narratives.

Cruz's campaign spokesman fed into this Narrative by stupidly pushing out a dumb claim that Rubio "demeaned" the Bible.

This based on misheard audio in a video.

At this late date, I am absolutely astonished that political professionals still fall into this trap; do they not remember Mickey Kantor's alleged (but not real) statement about "white n*****rs" in Pennsylvania?

Or CNN's debacle in claiming George Zimmerman said "coon"?

How many times do these morons have to be stung by the phenomenon that if someone tells you what to hear in audio, you will in fact hear it, but not because it was actually said, but only because it's actually sometimes difficult to understand speech, and if we're given a claim about what was said, our brains will keep hearing the words that way?

It's like in math when you first accidentally sum 17 and 19 and get 33. You will keep on making this mistake for a while. You will be blind to the error your brain is making, because once a "track" is established in your brain for thought or interpretation, thoughts keep going down that exact same track, unless they are forcefully disturbed from it.

It is not remotely plausible that Marco Rubio would ever say something publicly dismissive about the Bible. In fact, I doubt he'd say something dismissive privately either, but certainly, we can all agree that this Miami Soundbite Machine is programmed well enough to avoid saying "There are no answers there" in regard to the Bible, in public, around operatives for other candidates.

But Cruz communications director Rick Tyler did push this absurd claim out, thereby fragging his own candidate, and so you're damn right Cruz should ask him to resign. Indeed, I think he should be fired, assuming he was the one who made the call.

Political people should just generally stop making preposterous claims, I guess except for Trump, for whom preposterous, risible gibberish is the stock in trade.

But if we're going to talk about dissembling candidates and campaigns, yes, let's check the record on Rubio's preposterous claims about his past positions on amnesty and DACA. (Don't post in that thread; old posts ban you for trying to post in them. If you want to comment on that old post, please do so in this thread.)

8 Rubio is becoming more annoying each day. This #AlwaysTheVictim bullshit astonishes me because he manages to portray himself as the poor little victim whilst lashing out with his own attacks.

Meanwhile, Cruz is growing on me. I listened to his speech in Vegas and he sounded really good. He should do more of what he did there, which is to layout in some specificity how he has, personally, fought to defend the Constitution.

It is happening on the D site too. The subcurrent from the Hillary nutters is that Bernie is not good with minorities.

So they push this "English Only" insanity and then trot out "friends of Hillary" to raise questions about Bernie and the BernieBros for being hostile to "POCs"

And once she slices and dices her way to the nom, it is gonna be gurrrl power and racism accusations all the way to the bank.

The humor of it all will be if Trump wins the nom and takes huge chunks of the labor vote and the black vote, the shrieking from Camp Hillary is going to be an awesome spectacle.

i worry about this myself. He's playing so hard for the evangelical vote that many of the more secular, or at least Reserved Yankee types who do not believe in public shows of religiosity, are against him for this one chauvanistic reason.*

* Which they can never see is a chuavanism, because no one sees their own chauvanisms, and particularly a group which is never much told about their own chauvanisms, such as the Establishment/college educated suburban class.

105 Here's what happened:
UPenn students had tape, added subtitles.
Asked Cruz campaign what the book was he was referring to. They came back with "The Bible".

Rick Tyler promoted it on Twitter and Facebook with a snarky clickbait headline.
Eventually deleted the Tweet but kept the Facebook post up for some time until Sarah Rumpf's story came out.

They tracked down the Cruz staffer who said Rubio did and said nothing wrong.

Cruz fires Tyler today and takes a swipe at Rubio in the presser.
Rubio releases a statement that takes a swipe at Cruz.

As Ace points out, it's the height of stupidity to think that Rubio would renounce his faith in a hotel breakfast nook in front of operatives of the other campaign (and his own son).

I also think Cruz was tired of Rick Tyler making him look bad. Tyler was clearly hired to do passive-aggressive stuff like this but kept feeding the perception that the Cruz campaign was overly mean.

Their targeted mailers have been over-the-top, including the "Voter Notice" ones in Iowa. Tyler's team seemed to take tough campaign tactics to 11.

What I'm seeing with this is a campaign feeling the heat and on its last legs. A communications director not afraid of future blowback because there is no future.

And I'm seeing it from Cruzers too. They know. I wouldn't say it's over, but the margin is so narrow for Cruz, it might as well be.

Trump is too much to overcome in a 3-way race and I don't think Cruz can do it in a 2-way at this point.

They know.

He's got some inherent drag to overcome (mostly stylistic and mindless, but there it is), and as this incident reminds us his campaign has been far from smooth.

But still quite early. Depending on the outcome, even Super Tuesday might be "early" for everyone to be forecasting the final score.

Confess to not even knowing what "Rubio fans" are like. I know you and ace have talked about them being annoying and vapid. Around here the worst I've seen is "oh, he made that one 'mistake' with immigration, but otherwise he's OK".

I believe a search of the archives would reveal me referring to Rubio long ago as a lightweight and a pretty empty suit, back when there was much rather daft excitement about him. Given the state of the country and the Senate, he might have been comparatively harmless if he stayed there, but after brief exposure it was pretty clear Rubio had reached his Peter Principle peak in the Senate.

I wish Cruz had understood this and aligned his campaign to promote the same platform, like: "Trump SAYS he will do these things, but I have the record that PROVES I will do these things." I see elements of that for the SC judge issue, but for whatever reason it's not getting any traction.

183 Here's what Bash said.

LINK: http://www.mediaite.com/online/cnn-cruz-heres-why/

BASH: We should say that our Chris Moody is breaking this news that Ben Carson is going to go back to Florida to his home, regardless of how he does tonight here in Iowa. He's going to go there for several days, and then afterwards he's not going to go to South Carolina; he's not going to go to New Hampshire. He's going to come to Washington, D.C., and he's going to do that because the national prayer breakfast is on Thursday.

And people who have been following Ben Carson's career know that that's really where he got himself on the political map, attending that prayer breakfast and really giving it to President Obama at the time. He became a hero among conservatives, among evangelicals especially.

TAPPER: That's very unusual --

BASH: Very unusual.

...

That's very unusual. Dot dot dot.

And in fact it is very unusual. That's why this was reported in the first place. No one cares if Carson is just taking a trip to Florida. It was reported precisely because it was so unusual, and that it could be read as a tea leaf about Carson's commitment to continuing his slow-walking race.

Also note there Bash does NOT provide the update that "Carson says he's continuing his campaign."

That was present in the tweets -- but not the tv report which raised so many eyebrows.

Glenn Beck is a nut. Ted Cruz isn't. As for the rest, perhaps it is the area and tradition I grew up in but it certainly doesn't turn me off. If he truly were pushing God to cover up his lack of any substance or in a false way (like Trump did in Iowa), it would bother me because I would feel he was trying to fake people out using God.

As it is he is a principled and upright man whose life is informed and shaped in a very good way by his religion.

I think people have been almost brainwashed over the last few decades to believe that Religion is somehow the equivalent to porn and is something that should be hidden. I think our country is suffering a moral crisis (as in our leaders have no morals) because of this shunting aside. It is something to think about.

221 I'm done with Mark Levin until either Cruz or Rubio is out of the race.

I can't do his rah-rah cheerleading against Rubio and for Cruz any fucking more. He's been dragging this wagon for more than two months now, and it's just so goddamn tiresome.

I don't want Trump as my President. I also think Cruz, while the only "True Conservative" we have, is also a slimy peckerhead and probably a monumental Dick. There's a reason that literally nobody likes him. He comes across as the unholy spawn of a used-car salesman and a tent-revival preacher, and I quite frankly don't want to listen to that for the next four to eight years. People like to yammer about how we haven't had the opportunity to vote for a True Conservative like Reagan in the last 30 years - Which would be a wonderful argument if Cruz was a tenth as charismatic or a sixteenth the bridge-building communicator that Reagan was. He's not, and we should stop pretending that he is.

Marco...sucks, except for the fact that he's at least somewhat palatable. Let's not even pretend that there is the political will in Congress to pass any sort of meaningful wall-building along the southern border, nor will amnesty ever get through unless the Congress turns upside-down, at which point we're fucked anyway. Do we honestly think that a President Cruz is going to un-fuck the immigration system? I, personally, don't have any faith in that idea.

Been reading you a long time, Ace, but if you turn into the blog version of Mark Levin (and it's gotten quite close in the last couple of weeks), I'm out until after it's a moot point.

Just curious: what exactly did Trump say about 9/11 that wasn't true? All he said was that Bush didn't keep us safe that day and that it happened on his watch. That's true. Bush, being the son of a former CIA director, should've torn down the wall Clinton built between the CIA and FBI on Day One. This isn't hindsight here. Anything Clinton did should've been seen by W as evil and he should've worked to undo everything immediately. W had the advantage of his father's CIA knowledge and he still didn't tear down the wall til AFTER 9/11. And as Ann Coulter pointed out, in June 2001, W actually made sure that Arabs were not being racially profiled at airports (!). And W allowed lax immigration to continue which directly led to the hijackers being here in the first place.
For me personally, I also have another issue with W: he became Islam's PR spox after 9/11. It was W who kept spewing the lie that "Islam is a religion of peace". Made me mad then (I'd been studying Islam for years before 9/11) and it makes me made now. We are STILL fighting W's false narrative about Islam 15 years later.

287 >>> You know, I really don't get the sneering about Glenn Beck and this fasting thing. Especially during Lent.

But I guess nothing good will come of discussing it.

...

I sneer at it for two reasons:

1. I'm not religious, but I always conceived of prayer as concerning greater things than a presidential nomination. I thought it was for bigger things. I don't really like when teams pray to God for a win -- does God really care about who wins?

What should be prayed for, at most, is for each man to do his best, and to thank God for whatever gifts he has bestowed on one, and whatever gifts he may choose to bestow on one in the future.

Again, i'm not religious, but this "Pray for a Candidate" thing seems to demean the point of religion to me. I thought religion was about the Big Things. I mean, really big.

2. I have a problem with it because Cruz is trying too hard on evangelicals, who he's splitting with Trump, while losing more secular people *precisely because* he's chasing the evangelical vote so hard.

People are chauvinistic. Those idiots who adore Amnesty Boy are largely in favor of him because he *flatters their sense of class belonging-ness.* He's of their class -- religious, but not too religious, a Nice College Boy -- and that's why they're attracted to him. Not for any real policy reason.

With this stunt, Beck further gives these chauvinists more coals for their chauvinism trains.

LOL! I think it must be like when some women get to a certain age and believe that the more make-up and jewelry they apply, the younger they will look when the exact opposite is true - it accentuates their age along with a way too short skirt.

I'm thinking that Trump has his own make-up & hair team and he instructs to add more tan no. 8 and more highlighter around the eyes for the same reason. No one has the balls to tell the boss he looks weird.

You can believe them or not BUT Cruz and Sessions also sponsored legislation last year to suspend the temporarily H1B1 program and tighten the rules so American labor could not be replaced or supplanted.

Evangelicals are just as jobless as anyone else right now. They are just as sick of illegal immigration as anyone else right now. Plus, they have the added anger of having been used as pawns for decades while seeing few results (similar to how the Dems use the blacks). The GOP has used their pro-life stance as bait to get them to vote for them all the while selling America out. Evangelicals are just like anyone else. Jobs, economy, immigration, terror, these all trump (pardon the pun) most else right now. Also, remember, evangelicals know bad televangelists the best. And Cruz looks like one of those. Outside of blogs there isn't much interest in Rubio's double talk. He's fighting multi front battles on Iowa's win still today from 3 of the remaining candidates. Anderson Cooper somehow thought he'd give this Canada thing legitimacy by asking a follow up on it in the town hall. Nothing seems to hit Trump.

I'm not a fan, just stating the obvious.

I don't see how Cruz gets the nomination. I just don't see it. In two weeks, after Super Tuesday, this will be more obvious.
And Rubio too. As weasily as he has been at times, I would vote for him over Hillary. Hillary is a criminal, and she will be the Democrat nominee. There was an article in the NY Times today, about the hill (pun) that Bernie has to climb to get enough delegates to win.
The comments were all about Hillary! and how most of them would hold their collective runny noses and vote for her. Because the Republicans are da Debil!, and that settles it. Or some such folderol.

It's the NY Times, and somebody had to make the effort to comment. I suspect that Hillary enthusiasm is not strong, and many Democrats will stay home come November.

Trump is a wild card. I have only vague notions of how he will act if elected. But I have absolutely concrete ideas of what President Clinton will be like. It will not be pretty. And if Republicans hold firm this year, she does get to tilt the SCOTUS if elected.
Tilt.

Christ instructed his followers to pray for their daily bread.

346 You know, it's you guys' fucking smug shitty attitude that makes people hate your terrible pro-amnesty, dissembling, doughy candidate.

You want to talk amnesty?

You want to talk immigration???

Well let's talk about immigration. You know what I do for a living, right? Well I looked it up, the number of PhDs in the mathematical sciences in 2014 was 920 to US citizens and 1006 to non-citizens.

You want to talk immigration?????

Talk about having to compete against that. People who never even set foot on US soil. People who never had to suffer under the shitty US public school system (and boy do they complain about it for *their* kids). People who had the best government-funded education in the world, selected as elites.

And of the half of PhDs awarded to Americans, how many of them are kids of professors? (For the record, my parents never went to college.) How many of them went to fancy private schools, while I had to take a scholarship at a land-grant and waste at least of a quarter of my time on Liberal Arts bullshit requirements?

That's right: English, history, social studies, diversity, whatever crap the education system puts in front of Americans to keep them from a STEM education while our competitors learn (a) Math and (b) foreign languages and (c) nothing else.

I have to compete against that. 7 billion people around the world. The best of the best of the best from everywhere.

And who do you compete against?

Was your class in school 50% foreign born? Mine in grad school was 50%...from China.

Do you compete against a pool of 7 billion potential competitors or just the English-speaking world?

You want to know immigration? *I* know immigration. I know what it's about and I know I'd get, probably, an 80% raise in salary and a job in a much better climate if academia had any immigration limits and if the national goal for STEM education weren't to just import more.

But that's my life. And, believe it or not, I'm not complaining. If I want to be world-class, I have to compete to be world-class. I have to overcome the handicap of the wretched American public education system.

And that's what needs to be torn down, not the GOP.

Does Gang of 8 suck? You'd better believe it. It goes against fundamental notions of fairness (why should people who break the law get priority over those who obey it), it's sneaky, it was an attempt by Rubio to gain some unearned spotlight and gave him a Lando Calrissian moment.

But it's time to stop this stupid posturing and go through the Five Stages pretty damned quick. I did it when Walker and Perry dropped out. I refuse to be stupid. I am not willing to lose just to get some revenge.

And I know full well Rubio has a dewey-eyed view of immigration but here's the facts: Trump is all-in for touchback amnesty and Cruz deflects when asked if he would deport.

So what's this over? A slapfight? Rubio'd be the third-most conservative GOP nominee since Coolidge -- after Goldwater and Reagan. And I'm sorry he's dough-faced and likable and you just want to stay mad at him.

You think anybody could get amnesty through? Well, the only ones who could are Clinton, Sanders and Trump and they will all try.

I gave Cruz a chance. I never ever criticized people for supporting Cruz and I won't start. He was a rational choice and, despite the fact that he was defending Trump waaaaaay too much, he himself was a legitimate candidate.

But Cruz can't do it. His genelex numbers are bad (Trump's are ruinous) and people who should be selecting Cruz over Trump are not doing so.

That's where we are. I'll wait, Ace. You'll get there soon enough. I'm a Stage 5 Rubio supporter. I'm not enthused, I'm certainly not in love, but I'll take it.

360 God doesn't give a shit if the Nation XYZ goes in the shitter or whatever, in my opinion.

Nation XYZ going into the shitter is very much linked to God withdrawing his protection or blessing.

If you're just talking about some abstract God concept, that's one thing, but the one described in the Bible is very much active in human affairs.

361 If Ruboit thinks he can win, how come they are not yelling about all the Super Tuesday states they lead in?

They aren't because they aren't.

Trump leads in every single one.

Trump--because the GOPe has thrown all-in for amnesty--will win big on Super Tuesday.

The only path to stopping Trump was for Cruz to win some states on Super Tuesday; Rubiot has and never had any chance of beating Trump.

Trump will have 500-600 delegates next Wednesday; Cruz and Rubio will split around 250-300.

And the GOPe will run stories Wednesday morning about how Rubiot, with his 100 delegates, is positioned in the prime location to beat Trump.

He did something similar with a German language Eurovision song from 1980 called Moscow. One of the commenters on the Moscow video wrote that even though he is a native speaker of German, when he sees the English subtitles with the nonsense words, that is what he hears.

Yes, that's where we are now. There is momentum building for a preference cascade to begin in 3 -4 weeks.

After Super Tuesday, both Cruz and Rubio will be too far behind in delegates to catch up. People will see this. It will be harder to catch Trump then, unless he makes some kind of giant mistake. And he has said some really ridiculous things, that apparently slide right off of him. I am not a Trump fan, but this is the reality of the situation. In 60 days, he will be free to say some REALLY ridiculous things to begin to position himself to run against Hillary. People here will cringe. I know I have, and will.

It matters little what kind of breast - beating we all may do here, about might-have-beens, and what could have been.

GA, 76 delegates, Trump up 11
TX, 155, Cruz up 6.7
MA, 42, Trump up 24
MN, 38, Trump up 6
OK, 43, Trump up 7.5
AR, 40, Cruz up 4
VA, 49, Trump up 6

See any there with Rubio?

No?

So, why do they keep pushing this notion that he can still win? Because all of the states next Tuesday are proportional (in different manners) and the winner of each will walk away with nearly all of the delegates.

So: Where is the state where Rubio is leading?

There is only one reason to push Rubio--and it's not because he can win--it's to damage Cruz so he can't.

501 Ace, your Rubio Derangement Syndrome is really starting to make you unreadable. This is a story about Cruz and the way his campaigning has been unethical since Iowa. It's not just one incident, it's a pattern of deceit. Yet, you are trying to excuse by putting up multiple links to where you say Rubio lied. This should be solely about what Cruz did. If you want to show Rubio lied about whatever, or Trump, you should start a different post about it. When you do it the way you are doing it now, it looks like you're excusing everything that the shady Cruz does.

Posted by: rexbatt at February 22, 2016 11:36 PM (woA40)

502 Eh, the GOP had a chance to beat Trump. It decided it hated Cruz more. When Rubio failed to do his job in NH and knock Kasich and Bush out of the primary, the GOP could have lined up behind Cruz. Imagine what the results look like in South Carolina if Haley, Gowdy, and Scott were campaigning for Cruz.

Instead, they made their decision. They despise Cruz so much they'd rather back a guy with zero shot of winning and hand the nomination to Trump than get behind Cruz. So, they managed to drag Rubio to a tie with Rubio and South Carolina, and won't manage to drag him to a single win until, MAYBE, Super Tuesday. By then the race will be over.

So, if that's the game they want to play, I'll play it too. If you hate my candidate so much that you'd rather have Trump win by propping up Cruz, I'll grant you your wish. I, too, won't vote for your candidate, and Trump can go ahead and win. You want it? You got it.

As to the clown above me, this is his site. He can create a blog post however he sees fit. You don't like that he smacked Rubes upside the head for his constant bitching about things which are true (like DACA), then go somewhere else. Fact is, Rubio has been screaming liar on things that are patently true and easily provable. He DID tell Univision that he would NOT end DACA on day 1, exactly as Cruz said. So for him to then scream "LIAR!!!," well, guess what? He needs to be called out on it. Daily.
