Polls Closing in South Carolina; Trump Declared Winner, Battle Between Rubio and Cruz for Second

Fox News says late-breakers are breaking for Cruz and Rubio. Some are speculating that while Trump might win, it might be a lot closer than previously predicted. I don't want to say I predicted that, but as a matter of fact, I predicted that. (DON'T COMMENT ON OLD POSTS, THE SYSTEM WILL BAN YOU!) And I'm not one of those guys who has kept claiming "This will sink Trump," either. I have no idea what will happen, personally. I'm worried that Trump's and Rubio's constant answer to Cruz's accurate claims about their records -- that Cruz is a "liar," though they never specify in what way he's lying -- might hurt him. Fox News, which Mickey Kaus has pointed out "makes amnesty easy" for the GOP by never asking many questions about it, has been very careful about not asking Rubio about Cruz's accurate claim that he told Univision he wouldn't cancel DACA for some time -- continues not asking Rubio about this. If they did ask about this, they'd find out Cruz was right, and in fact could have gone much further than he did. Jake Tapper did ask Rubio about this. Rubio, get this, lied once again:MARCO RUBIO: Univison has consistently reported that, right after that interview, that I said DACA has to go away. That is because it is unconstitutional, I opposed it when the president did it, I remain against it now, it can not be permanent policy, and I have said that repeatedly. And even Univison who conducted the interview, said that the interview was about me saying that DACA had to go away. So again, another example of [Cruz] misleading people.Um, that's not all you said, buddy. Let's look at the Spanish and the English translation. "JR" is Jorge Ramos and "SMR" is Senator Marco Rubio. I've bolded the key sentences in both Spanish and English. Accent marks and inverted question marks omitted, as they would become undefined characters on the comments page.

So yes, he says it is going to have to end at some point -- that's the soundbite he makes sure English-speakers hear -- but he doesn't tell you he also said he would not terminate it right away because people are already "benefiting" from it and he "do[esn't] think it would be fair" to take it from them. Then he says, the reason it will go away is because it will be replaced by comprehensive immigration reform, that is, a legislative amnesty instead of an executive-order one. Si Dio quieres. If God wants/God Willing. So yeah, Rubio says one thing for English speaking Republicans, but says something different for Spanish speakers. In English, he only talks about border security and DACA "ending." In Spanish, he says it will have to end at some point to be determined, and also says that won't matter much anyway, because we'll have a permanent legislative amnesty in place by then. (He also speaks of it ending in the third person -- he won't end it. It will just "end" itself, somehow. If we're doing a close parsing.) That's not a "lie" by Cruz, nor is it, as some would claim, a "mistranslation." Anyone who wishes to claim this is a mistranslation -- point to the words or phrases you dispute, and we can go through them with a dictionary. As I said, I'm learning Spanish this weekend, so that's a fun time for me. (Seriously, it is.) But anyway, Rubio gets to shout that Cruz is "lying" about what he said and no one challenges it. I'm not sure if no one at Fox speaks Spanish, or if Fox is just deliberately shilling for their amnesty golden-boy. So that's why I think Cruz could lose: Trump is saying Cruz "lies" when he says Trump previously supported even partial birth abortion (!!!) as he did, and is on tape saying so, and Rubio is saying Cruz "lies' when he accurately quotes his Univision interview, even though that's on tape too. But the Establishment has an interest in eliminating Cruz so that it's just Trump and Rubio ( a contest they then plan to win, thus getting their establishment amnesty candidate nominated), so it's not worth pointing out that every charge Cruz made was true. Anyway, I do fear that. I do see the power of the Establishment juggernaut. It's not just what they report, or what questions they ask. It's more what they won't report, and what questions Chris Wallace deliberately avoids. We'll see if my fears as usual come to pass. The "Mistranslation." When you hear people claiming mistranslation, keep in mind they base this claimed "mistranslation" on this single word:
JR: As you know, it has always been hard for Republicans to get the Hispanic vote. I wanted to talk with you about very concrete issues that affect Hispanics directly. I would like to start with the issue of deferred action and DACA. If you made it to the White House, would you keep the DACA program; that is, Deferred Action for the Dreamers, and would you keep President Barack Obama's executive action, which would benefit more than four million undocumented people?
SMR: Well, DACA is going to have to end at some point. I wouldn't undo it
immediately. The reason is that there are already people who have that permission, who are working, who are studying, and I don't think it would be fair to cancel it suddenly. But I do think it is going to have to end. And, God willing, it's going to end because immigration reform is going to pass. DAPA hasn’t yet taken effect, and I think it has impeded progress on immigration, on immigration reform. And since that program hasn’t taken effect yet, I would cancel it. But DACA, I think it is important; it can't be cancelled suddenly because there are already people who are benefiting from it. But it is going to have to end. It cannot be the permanent policy of the United States. And I don't think that's what they’re asking for, either. I think that everyone prefers immigration reform.

The claimed "mistranslation" is that some take "important" to refer to DACA, whereas Rubio's spinners say it should refer to "there are people already benefiting from it." I would suggest that 1, the difference between these two possible translations is so slight as to be hallucinatory, and 2, this isn't an error in translation anyway, but simply one of logic and parsing, as this ambiguity exists in both Spanish and English, and has nothing to do with some sort of an imaginary nuance of the Spanish language itself, and most importante, 3, this one minor quibble over what "importante" refers to in this one sentence does not render everything else a "mistranslation." But that's how this claim is being deployed -- bring up any of Rubio's Univision appearances (where he frequently talked about amnesty in a different way than he did on, say, Mark Levin), and Rubio's spinners cry "mistranslation," all regarding this one insignificant quibble over what importante refers to. I would humbly suggest No es muy importante.

In regard to Rubio and Trump and Clinton they think because they throw in a qualifier that it gives them an out and that you are not allowed to bring up the content of the rest of their statements.

Still too early to call #2 for Cruz or Rubio, and it really doesn't matter. Neither one will drop out yet, and with fractions of a point between them, neither is a clear "favorite" as "non-Trump".

Brandon has explained this before. That there are certain counties/districts you can look at that are a very reliable indicator for the final results. So if they have a particular trend you can call it early.

You do a (legitimate, as best you can) confidence interval. I think I remember Mike Barone (who knows every congressional district in the country by heart) saying FOX's decision desk was using a 99% confidence model before they would call it.
Don't know if that's still it, but that means your math tell you there is 99% probability you projections are accurate based on your sampling, which is exits + bellweathers together.

Trump keeping a double digit lead, though, he is going to run the table. Cruz votes would go to Trump. I think Carson votes do, too.
If Rubio pulls a second here, he will definitely pull the Comeback Kid card.
If current DD results hold, with Bush finishing behind Kasich, he is going to have to end his campaign.

To give you a bit of insight to a Trump voter. I'll give you my take and you can make of it what you will.
In the past 3 decades or so I have voted straight ticket Republican except once in a local race for governor way back when.
Here goes.
1. I just don't like the man. He seems preachy and untrustworthy to me, all things aside.
2. I hate,hate,hate the conservative purity thing and like it or not when I hear someone mention "conservatism" it instantly makes me think of small tent politics which takes me to #3.
3.I don't believe he will win it because of the conservative/conservative/conservative hoopla.
4.He is bought and paid for by the same people who bought and paid for Hillary. 3 decades of voting Republican and I know what that buys me......Nothing.
5.He took a case on behalf of a ChiCom against an American business man to basically steal his ideas. I do fully understand that lawyer's must represent their clients. Accepting clients in the first place is another thing.
Some may feel this point is splitting hairs. It isn't with me. It ranks right up their with Obama holding the most powerful position on the planet and he didn't lift a finger for his brothers living in a cow dung hut in Kenya making 40 bucks a month. It really shows who you are.
Anyhow there you go. Cruz will never catch on with me.

Sure, Cruz can get Carson's votes but Kasich and Jeb go to Rubio. Still not enough to catch Trump, though, because a few of each of those will go to him. And if Cruz drops out at some point, almost all of his votes go to Trump.

When (not if) those three drop out, the dynamic will likely change dramatically.
Trump has about 30%, and he's probably not going to end up with much more than that. That leaves plenty of "juice" for either Cruz or Rubio to come out on top, still.

Yeah, I tend to agree, Rubio is at 16% and Bush/Carson/Kasich are about 20% combined, Trump is at 34%, hard to see many Bush/Carson/Kasich people going to Cruz so it's going to end up between Trump and Rubio.

My parents are both Trump people, and so is my grandma. It's the feels. He hit the right buttons with his comments about building the wall, illegals, and the trade stuff. They've been on the bandwagon ever since and talking to them about politics has been nothing but a constant stream of Trump sound bites. They won't even acknowledge what he said about the mandate, they've done an overnight about face on Iraq because of what he said. Basically just adopt all of his positions, whatever they happen to be that day.
Before I get flamed, please note I do not accuse every Trump supporter of this. This is just my anecdotal observances of my relatives that support Trump.

Reviewing the whole section of the interview (cry for me I can't stand Ramos or how he talks) I will say that Rubio also talks about DACA not being a fixed law and later talks about simplifying an over-bureaucratic immigration system, but he does state bluntly that he is not talking about deporting so many millions of human beings.
I will add that I don't like Rubio, I think he is a two-faced flannel mouth liberal in the same vein as JFK, and that he will always refute his promises in the face of what he thinks is the currently acceptable answer.
But that is me.
By the way, Univision watchers don't much think of Rubio. I doubt they are natural conservatives.

That only matters when Cruz says it. Just like voter mailers only matter when Cruz's camp sends them out, reporting about Carson in Iowa only counted when Cruz's campaign did it, etc and so on. No one ever gets onto Rubio's campaign for doing those things. It's all OK and just regular campaigning when Rubio does it, because he's sooooper handsome and talks pretty.

Bush and Rubio are both GOPe, so I think they're pretty much interchangeable to their supporters.
Likewise, if Cruz dropped out, many of his supporters would go to Trump, and vice versa.

There was a time when I figured that when/if Trump implodes Cruz would be right there to pick up the lead. Now it looks like when/if Trump implodes Rubio will fill the power vacuum and become the front runner.
It saddens me to say this, but in the best interest of our country, Cruz supporters are gonna have to switch to Trump. It's the only sure way to keep Rubio out of the driver's seat.

The GOPe's refusal to take a hard line on immigration will lose them the election. There is a reason people are coming out in droves for Trump.

This is just a fact and can be proven by anyone wishing to look or have experienced.
I recall asking those english speaking hispanics (not hired by me btw) what this or that word meant or a translation.
I estimated that most illegals are at best semi literate. They are at about 4th or 5th grade level of vocabulary and language structure.
This is not to claim they are stupid. Taking a look at the countries that they come from, it is the upper and upper middle class that enjoys a high school equivalent education. The lower levels especially those outside the cities do not receive much education and even if it's available they do not take part as they must spend their time earning a meager living not sitting in a class room.
Now the tech immigrants are a different story and they do make a difference job wise as they will work for less and will make fewer demands for fear of deportation. (lose the job, lose the green card and it's back to wherever you came from)
We are NOT importing the best and the brightest for the most part which is why open borders will fail and fail spectacularly. The rapid plunge into 3rd world status will be shocking to all. But the elites will do just fine.

The mandate was a surprise sort of ... but Republicans support the non-denial for pre-existing condition thing. The mandate was supposed to be the part that would break Obamacare via SCOTUS, but Roberts failed us. So if pre-existing condition people are in my insurance pool, damn straight I want everyone to help me pay for that entitlement.
Trump wasn't specific, except he said he'd push repeal and replace, more choices and market competition, keep your old doctor ... But pre-existing has to be paid for not just by those that already had insurance.
It's a mandate/tax, so all must pay ... phrasing. I'm not sure who is pushing a clearer plan.

Trump hits the major issues head on, and takes on media and the big names and wins, in the media. I think Coulter and Laura Ingraham do a much more honest explanations than "bunch of freaked out people acting irrationally".
The mature people see what Trump can accomplish. I used to like Walker then Cruz #2. But they didn't have the national dynamic needed. Trump just took almost every country, where Cruz was supposedly strong with evangelicals, and Rubio had the state leaders pushing him, and Trump had FOX mostly in his face.
The Trump people are ignorant or just lashing out is so wrong, and insulting. They hear the clarion call "Make America Great Again". And he hits the big issues squarely. Trump rallies are a blast, from what I'm told and what I see. He has the huge crowds, the love someone saying "America First", finally.

The issue NOW, isn't Cruz. The issue is Rubio. With the Establishment vote sharpening around Rubio, Trump and Cruz are splitting the anti-establishment vote and the longer that split festers, the stronger Rubio will get now that the full weight of Rinse Penis, Karl Rove, Haley Barber, K Street, McConnel et. al will be behind him.
If you want to burn down the Establishment Trump and Cruz voters are going to have to make up and combine to defeat He, the Robot.

But your mistake is in looking at the Stormfront crowd, and thinking that they are somehow typical of Trump supporters. Trump's supporters here know full well that he is not any kind of conservative idol, but they see a competent guy who is offering to do some things they like, and most importantly, a weapon to be used to destroy the GOPe which has raped them in the ass since Reagan left office.
They will settle for a non-conservative firebrand who agrees on the existential matter of closing the border, rather than voting for more of the same with the GOPe squish candidates. And it seems most of the Trump supporters here don't actively hate Cruz or Carson, but just don't see them as having what it takes to win the general.

People may have been unhappy that he attacked George W. Bush but they are very happy that he promises to avoid additional optional wars.
His weaknesses are on vanity issues, like abortion or gay marriage that are already settled by the courts. He's not going to force you to bake the cake.
And he re-draws the electoral map, putting additional states into play in the general election.
Most "conservatives" are pragmatic conservatives, who want to conserve their way of life. The principles of the conservative movement (which have changed rather often) are secondary.

This is why I think Trump supporters are idiots. This guy has NEVER helped a conservative cause. NEVER. He's such a great conservative? Why's he giving money to CUOMO instead of Astorino? Why hasn't he helped turn NY conservative? With his money and media savy you'd think he could.
He's not going to appoint more Scalias. He doesn't associate with any to know them.
He's not going to purge the Feds of libs. All he's associated with are libs. We don't know who his picks are for anything. Personnel is policy.
Trumpsters say, "Well Reagan was a Democrat and changed later" Yes he did. But he did before running for office. And before running he gave excellent defenses of conservatism, explaining what it was, and why he is for it. And he didn't run for President right after his conversion. He worked his way up. He proved who he was, and that he could be trusted.
I really hope Trump is telling the truth, and he's had a "Come to Reagan" moment. But I haven't seen any evidence of it. And that scares me.

So... not really anything to take away here. Except that Trump just got all the delegates from South Carolina by sweeping the state. that seems to say something about the mood of voters, for good or ill.

Might be true. Doesn't change anything, does it? He still got nothing but a tie for 2nd. Same thing for Cruz, he got nothing but a tie for 2nd. Neither one seems a clear winner here. Trump seems to be the only one who's demonstrating he can pull in a variety of voters and win.
Do I want him to win? No, he's a lying left-moderate Democrat pretending to be a Republican to win. I'm not 100% convinced he's not here to help his friends the Clintons win, although his vast ego seems to make that unlikely. He'll be the biggest RINO ever and when he doesn't "build that wall" or do a single thing about immigration, its going to horrify his voters.
But he's winning and the other guys ain't. So arguing for someone else because they can win just doesn't seem very compelling.

Dana Loesch had a great show a week or so ago where she characterized the race as being an un-indicted felon vs. a socialist on the Dem side and an evangelist vs. a nationalist on the Repub side.... then went on to let us know that she was a balls to the wall Cruz / evangelist supporter. Another point: Rubio is for depriving college men of their due process rights under the Constitution. He cosponsored a bill with Shumer that allows the colleges to form up their kangaroo courts. So on top of trying to turn Americans into Mexicans, he also wants to dilute the Constitution.
Cruz is a great guy and probably the only conservative in this race. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have been able to gain any traction.

Trump listens to the American people and doesn't back away when some media shill starts shooting missiles at him.
Trump resonates with Evangelicals, because he says he will protect them. I think that this is why he is doing much better than expected with that particular group.
Trump gives us hope that we are not a lost nation on the path to destruction.
Last, but not least, if Trump wins in November, we will get to see the GOPe, the media idiots and the pearl clutcher's heads explode. I, personally cannot wait.
