And you can tell a man really really believes in what he's saying when he announces a shift in a long-held position on the eve of a vote that could determine if he gets the nice big office and promotion he wants.
I mean, that's gold standard, right? You can tell Rubes really stands behind his sudden vow to cancel DACA immediately -- after years of saying he would only do so after another program of legalization was in place -- by the sudden, grudging claim he'd so so on day one of his presidency, claimed on the eve of a do or die primary. I mean, you do believe Mario, don't you? He's so innocent and sweet, like a fuzzy little baby chick. Here's what he said in his 2015 interview with Jorge Ramos...DACA [Obama’s amnesty for DREAMers] is going to have to end at some point. I wouldn’t undo it immediately. The reason is that there are already people who have that permission, who are working, who are studying, and I don’t think it would be fair to cancel it suddenly. But I do think it is going to have to end. And, God willing, it's going to end because immigration reform is going to pass. DAPA hasn’t yet taken effect, and I think it has impeded progress on immigration, on immigration reform. And since that program hasn’t taken effect yet, I would cancel it. But DACA, I think it is important; it can't be cancelled suddenly because there are already people who are benefiting from it. But it is going to have to end. It cannot be the permanent policy of the United States. And I do'’t think that’s what they’re asking for, either. I think that everyone prefers immigration reform.By the way: There is a lot of lying on social media about this being a "mistranslation." That claim is all made about a single quibble: Sarah Rumpf made a big deal that some people said Rubio's reference to "important" refers not to DACA (as it sure appears to), but to the thought that "people...are benefiting from it." So based on that -- and only that -- Rubio's Minions are claiming the entire translation is wrong. It's not. I went through it word for word and actually if you want to contradict me I'l put up the word for word translation, which each word linked to the definition on WordReference. I already went through the exercise of translating it mentally; won't take too much longer to just write it up and hyperlink each word. The translation is accurate. The spin here is that this minor quibble over what Rubio is calling "important" has nothing to do with the rest of this: Rubio is saying he won't cancel DACA until he has some other plan in place, because people are already "benefiting" from DACA and you can't take that away from them. Don't believe people who tell you otherwise. Again, I'll just put up the translation if you make me. I don't mind that much. I'm learning Spanish now anyway. In November, he was forced, under presure, to crabwalk back this vow to now saying DACA will end, whether there's an amnesty in place, someday or another. Today, he crabwalks it back further and says he'll end it on day one. Not to belabor this, but he simply takes a new tactical position when he needs to. He never deviates willingly from his determination that there will be an amnesty and a pathway to citizenship; indeed, that remains his announced position. There will be an amnesty and a pathway to citizenship, just after we have a security plan in place. If you think he's so cute and such a remarkable candidate you want to believe or propagate his lies, go ahead and do so; but do so with open eyes: He was pro-amnesty, he is pro-amnesty, he will continue to be pro-amnesty, forever. Your only hope of blocking amnesty is to have a president who will block it; Congress is on board with the plan. So agitate for this slithery chameloeon if you like; but do not pretend to yourself or others that that will not result in a guaranteed amnesty in the first year of his presidency.

My son ... like me ... has "the knack", as they say in Dilbert. Poor kid - tried to teach him better.
He's an Honor's student in Math, Science, and History - can't do anything more than Standard English to save his ass. The only way I got through it was reading constantly - shit like Dune, Starship Troopers, and such - and imitating those kinds of authors when I had to write basic sentences.
Other than that - I was lost. I faked my way through it.

Well, not that bad. But its pretty rough. Lots of memorization. Word order matters a lot, and there are like 8 cases in Russian. The rules start falling apart the more you learn. I do love the language, though.

You have to learn to stop fighting the language and questioning every choice the language makes. You have to stop the "Why don't they just do it THIS way, like in English?" thing.
I did that a lot, and still do. It's just a thing you do, but of course if you want to just speak english, speak english.

It is always the speed and the accent that throws you off. In one of the later german courses I took in college I thought I was finally getting a handle on this here german, then we watched a German Drama/Soap Opera TV show and I was completely lost at sea.

This sounds suspiciously Chompskyan.
I've studied (or dabbled in) Spanish, Russian, Latin, and Chinese, and they end up fighting each other for grammatical primacy, but it's all for naught -- I just end up thinking it in English, doing a hasty translation, and spewing it out in the desired language, which means a tape delay. The English framework was laid in too early and too well for me to be a smoove linguist.

You'd pick it up really fast if you were immersed - in Germany, for example. Its like a muscle you haven't exercised in a while.
It wasn't until I learned German that I could backtranslate and make English rules make sense.
I learned more about English grammar by taking other languages than I had speaking English my entire life before that.

Rubio's (current) first position appears to be that no other changes to the immigration law can happen before the border is secure, and I think that is about right. That appears to be the position of pretty much every other candidate as well.
Rubio's (current) second position appears to be that once the border is secure, then he is in favor of amnesty. I don't know how keen I am on that, but I am at least willing to consider it as one of many possible options. That is also where the biggest divisions are, what to do after the border is secure.
So, provided that the border is secure enough to your satisfaction, what do you think should happen to those illegally here? Personally I think it depends to a degree on their particular circumstances. Yes they are all guilty of a crime, but how severely the crime is punished ought to depend on extenuating circumstances.
Obviously the felons and criminals and other assorted lowlifes should be kicked out, no appeals allowed, no mercy shown. Recent illegal immigrants, I think, should be deported as well. The hard cases concern the ones who came here illegally a long time ago, work and have established roots here, have children here who are US citizens, and have otherwise not broken the law, except for their initial illegal entry. Personally I would not be terribly concerned if this subset of illegals were eventually granted a path to citizenship, provided they paid a civil penalty for their illegal behavior and had to go to the "back of the line" in applying for citizenship, behind everyone else who applied legally. I don't know how large a proportion of the illegal population would comprise this number of people, but I'm sure it's much less than the oft-quoted 11 million figure, maybe only 1 or 2 million.
I think this would be a reasonable compromise between "deport them all", which let's be honest, while logistically possible, is simply not politically feasible, and "amnesty them all", which really would create the absolute wrong incentive and spur even more illegal immigration despite our best efforts at securing the border.

I don't think immigration is a bad thing. Okay, they broke our immigration laws. But I wouldn't disqualify a family with children born in the US that has otherwise lived lawfully and been productive from an opportunity to be naturalized.

Of course, it gets tricky. Some words in English have different meanings in different cultures. Fanny is pretty mild in America but in England....

But for this subset of illegals, they have been here so long, and the government has been complicit in not enforcing its immigration law in so long, that they have made choices about their lives based on the government's failure to act that makes it very hard to suddenly deport them all.
Loosely, it is analogous to squatting on the land of an absentee landlord. If the squatter has actually made improvements to the land and made a positive contribution, and the landlord, by his inaction, has decided that he doesn't really care what the squatter does, does it seem right to one day take the squatter's hard work away from him and evict him entirely? I think a more equitable solution would be for the squatter to have the option of purchasing the land from the absentee landlord and be allowed to stay, provided that the squatter also provided restitution to the landlord for his years of illegally squatting on the land.

I don't really agree with your assessment, but I'll allow that it's difficult to tell what Trump's actual position is, given the vagueness and mercurial nature of his word salad pronouncements. Last I remember, though, his position was to let "the good ones" back in, and because he wants to prove he's not a racist, he argues that most of them are good ones.

Well I think that we ought to have an honest conversation about amnesty, immigration, borders and walls.
Rubio's
(current) first position appears to be that no other changes to the
immigration law can happen before the border is secure, and I think that
is about right. That appears to be the position of pretty much every
other candidate as well.
Rubio's (current) second position
appears to be that once the border is secure, then he is in favor of
amnesty. I don't know how keen I am on that, but I am at least willing
to consider it as one of many possible options. That is also where the
biggest divisions are, what to do after the border is secure.
So,
provided that the border is secure enough to your satisfaction, what do
you think should happen to those illegally here? Personally I think it
depends to a degree on their particular circumstances. Yes they are all
guilty of a crime, but how severely the crime is punished ought to
depend on extenuating circumstances.
Obviously the felons and
criminals and other assorted lowlifes should be kicked out, no appeals
allowed, no mercy shown. Recent illegal immigrants, I think, should be
deported as well. The hard cases concern the ones who came here
illegally a long time ago, work and have established roots here, have
children here who are US citizens, and have otherwise not broken the
law, except for their initial illegal entry. Personally I would not be
terribly concerned if this subset of illegals were eventually granted a
path to citizenship, provided they paid a civil penalty for their
illegal behavior and had to go to the "back of the line" in applying for
citizenship, behind everyone else who applied legally. I don't know how
large a proportion of the illegal population would comprise this number
of people, but I'm sure it's much less than the oft-quoted 11 million
figure, maybe only 1 or 2 million.
I think this would be a
reasonable compromise between "deport them all", which let's be honest,
while logistically possible, is simply not politically feasible, and
"amnesty them all", which really would create the absolute wrong
incentive and spur even more illegal immigration despite our best
efforts at securing the border.

Husband and I took our first trip to Italy together (years ago). I already knew that making the "okay" sign in Italy is "you're an asshole."
I don't know what in the hell got into us, but everywhere we went, whether it was to purchase cheeses at a grocer, or buy gelato, if the server asked if it was acceptable, one or both of us would do the "YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE" sign, and then immediately want to cut our hands off.
In Rome, husband asked a lovely woman directions to the Spanish Steps. She gave us simple directions, and husband thanked her (in Spanish) and gave her the dreaded "okay!" sign.
I still cringe thinking about it to this day. We've never, ever done the "okay!" sign anywhere else. WTF??

How about the border gets secured, immigration is put on a temporary hold, and the morons in congress along with the President (Cruz) decides to actually follow the laws, enact strict E-verify with real consequences to employers, and deportations when available. It's not that hard if you have the will to do it.
And quit enacting all these special programs for special groups, that's was causes the entire immigration programs to fail.

Exactly, we have a path to citizenship - it begins at the back of the line that forms up early in the morning, every morning at our consulates abroad.
But, I'll balance my call for landmines on the border with some compassion - I'll reluctantly agree to fund a significant expansion to the consular service to work the back log on one condition. The hiring rules are changed at State to give disabled vets almost unlimited preference for those jobs. Secondly, the societal upheaval would be huge. You would need a police force on a grand scale to track them down and deport them. And they would have to dedicated to just this goal. Some of the deportees and their sympathizers would fight back, so there would be casualties. And there is no guarantee that the police force would be disbanded when all of the roundups and deportations have taken place.
Honestly, I have no idea on how to fix this problem, although I do not favor amnesty. The problem is urgent.
Lastly, might I point out that during WWII, the Nazis used valuable rail stock to move Jews to the camps instead of using that same rolling stock to send troops and supplies to the eastern front cost them dearly.

We aren't currently fighting a two-front war so there is no need to worry about tradeoffs such as "send troops to the front lines vs. send Mexicans back to Mexico".

I'm currently taking their basic four hour course in Hebrew. I'm illiterate, obviously, but I can order beer and know when to duck.

I'm a Cruz guy right now since Walker dropped out, but the number of people whose opinions I otherwise trust who hate Cruz' guts gives me pause. Some of it's that he's been anti-establishment since he made it into the Senate, but still.
I'd take Rubio as President in a heartbeat over most anyone else, with the understanding that like W, it would be four to eight years of threatening to crowbar him if he started thinking amnesty.
Under no circumstances whatsoever am I going to vote for Clinton, Sanders, Trump, or Jeb Bush. I'll write in "Bozo the Clown" and/or set myself on fire first.
I think most of the illegal immigration could be reduced by mandating something like E-Verify and sending employers who hire illegals to prison for a long, long time. Anyone who is not for this, I am extremely skeptical of their desire to actually solve the problem.
Also, we've had illegal immigration so long that some of these long-term illegals have had children in the US who are US Citizens and are really creatures of US Hispanic culture rather than Mexico, Central America, etc. I volunteer at a food pantry on weekends (which is why I'm taking Spanish classes) and you see obvious illegals bringing in kids who speak fluent American English as translators. If we go to mass deportations, families like these are going to be a nightmare to deal with.

No, not really.
I work at a smallish regional university. Not one of the mega research universities that rely on student visas for grad students to do slave-labor research to justify big-money grants.
Sure our university, like all others, have foreign students. I have no idea how the foreign student visa process works. I imagine it is hard and unnecessarily stupid. But we really don't have a lot of foreign students. Maybe a few % are foreign. Most are locals.

I look at language as sort of bicep curls for the brain. I've read plenty of studies pointing to the fact that bilingual and multilingual folks experience better quality of life but also there are commensurate benefits for those studying a language as well. Increased cognition and so forth.

It's not just "foreign students". It's quite a lot of domestic "students" as well.
At my previous university, they had an academic policy whereby a student could retake a class as many times as they wished, and only the highest grade would count towards their academic transcript. So quite a few students figured out how to game the system: they would take an easy class, get an "A", and then re-enroll for that same class in subsequent semesters, get the financial aid money, never show up to class, and fail the class, but since their initial "A" was only what showed up on their transcript, it never affected their academic standing. It was quite a racket.

If I were American Emperor, I would decree that the educational system be changed to a three-track system:
Track One: Vocational training, only in careers that can't possibly be outsourced. Such as car repair, HVAC installation, etc.
Track Two: "High-tech" careers, in STEM mainly. They are the major knowledge and innovation producers.
Track Three: Liberal arts careers. Sure they create knowledge and add to the aesthetic value of the culture, but good luck finding someone to hire you. That's all on you.
And if you drop out from any of the three tracks (or if you are in Track Three), then you are doomed to be Starbucks baristas or McDonald's fry cooks, and God have mercy on your soul. I don't think anyone should be stuck in an outsourceable low-skill low-paying job. Those jobs should go to China and Malaysia and Thailand, for good reason. Let the 12-year-old Thai trannies do those jobs.

The main problem with the German system is that the kids have to choose at such a young age what they want to specialize in.
I mean, 14-year-olds or 15-year-olds really shouldn't have the pressure put on them to decide what career track they are going to pursue for the next 50 years.
So I would favor a hybrid system in practice, have the highschool system be more of a survey approach like what we have here, and upon entering college or trade school, that is when you decide what your eventual vocation will be.

Well, lets look at their respective Senate votes to test that proposition. Rubio got 48.9% (lets call it 49%) of the vote, or 2,645,743 votes, in his senate race 2010. Cruz got 56.6% (lets call it 56% to give Rubio a sporting chance) of the vote, or 4,440,137 votes, in his senate race in 2012.
Then Cruz promptly road to rescue us from Rubio's perfidy and, with a few others like Jeff Sessions, delayed the Gang of Eight travesty long enough for us to scare the House into not voting for it.
So, just going by that, it sure seems that the guy who says what he means and means what he says wins out over the lying squish.

And use your Fing instincts. Does any intellectually honest person think Cruz is likable? I agree with the guy on nearly every issue, and I think he comes across as a prick. And the share of the electorate that only cares about who is the most likable--a damn sad percentage--will not warm up to Cruz. His only prayer is that HRC is so Fing unlikable herself. Well, lets look at their respective Senate votes to test that proposition. Rubio got 48.9% (lets call it 49%) of the vote, or 2,645,743 votes, in his senate race 2010. Cruz got 56.6% (lets call it 56% to give Rubio a sporting chance) of the vote, or 4,440,137 votes, in his senate race in 2012.
Then Cruz promptly road to rescue us from Rubio's perfidy and, with a few others like Jeff Sessions, delayed the Gang of Eight travesty long enough for us to scare the House into not voting for it.
So, just going by that, it sure seems that the guy who says what he means and means what he says wins out over the lying squish.

You're using their respective shares of the vote when Rubio was running against two other candidates and after unseating the incumbent governor vying for the position and coming in second as the Independent? That Rubio won 49% while having to give up votes to Christ-Republicans is pretty damn strong. And Cruz winning 56% in a State tailor made for a Republican? Hardly earth-shattering.
I'm glad Cruz won. I support true conservative candidates. And I will sit out before voting for Jeb!! But Rubio is not Jeb and will (and has) come around on immigration. He isn't perfect, but he has a better chance of winning and then governing.

I think now that parties collapse the same way. a party can survive lean unpopular years, partly because they'll suceed in low turnout local elections. but when people actively repudiate that party it is dead. it doesn't matter if anything is there to replace it at the time.
i think if Rubio or something like is forced on us we'll begin to see that dynamic play out in earnest. IMHO

BS. I follow this blog because I'm a die-hard. If I had my druthers, Cruz would win. And anyone who just ignores electability when the only real issue that matters to a true conservative is who appoints the next Justice doesn't need to sling stones about where we stand on the issues. Even W., who was a weak President, made reasonably good appointments (bitch about Roberts on Obamacare all you want, he's been very strong on a lot of issues including Voting Rights Act abuses, EPA abuses, commerce clause limitations, and affirmative action, among other thing). I'd much rather Cruz pick the next Justice, but he can't do that in second place. Rubio will pick a decent Justice, and that's a hell of a lot more important than whether Rubio F---ed up with the Gang of 8 (which he did). We cannot lose the Court.

Webb asked her if everyone in the USA gets a free college education, would there be any requirements that the coursework would be one that has jobs waiting for graduates and she said she was unaware of any such requirement, that the "better educated our millenials are, everyone will benefit".
She said that as far as Bernie's progressive tax plan, the 1% will finally start to pay their fair share and some people will see their taxes go down. It will only be the upper "eschelon" (no defintion) that will find their taxes go up.
And this guy is a serious candidate.

When I hear Manx spoken, it's just like the Irish I grew up with. I can hear it and speak it with no problem. Scots Gaelic is more difficult, I get it in bits. I can't really understand Welsh or Breton at all, just hints at the edges.

My father grew up in a slum in Worcester, MA. My mother grew up in a west of Ireland farm so remote, they had to pump in sunlight.
Guess what? They came from people with so little idea of how to deal with the world, they took guidance from those they saw as their betters (priests, doctors, solicitors, teachers), and forced, BEAT, their kids into doing anything that would allow them to escape the poverty.
And now, where are we? Well, let the precious snowflakes discover themselves.
I grew up on a farm in the west of Ireland, one generation removed from grinding poverty. I have absolutely no appreciation for self-discovery as a part of higher education. That's for the decadents.
Put on your big boy pants, pick a trade, and launch.
Save your passions for your hobbies, when you are rich enough. In the meantime, make your way, pay your taxes, contribute.

Since when does it matter what happened in the last 60 years? My kid is being told she has to do "new math". WTF. We built the atomic bomb with old math, I guess. We've been using old math for the last IDK, 4000 years? Not good enough now. Because we have to be like China...anywho I digress. Channel 3 on my TV has been channel 3 for like 100 years and now it's channel 153 or something.
Long story short, my point is, things change and I'm voting for Cruz. I like him because everyone else doesn't. But I'm an underdog sorta person anyways.
