Harper Collins Blacklists Author's Book Because Of a Single Chapter Where He Posited AIs Destroy Humanity For Fear Humanity Will Destroy Them First, as "Inconvenient"

He didn't intend it as an abortion metaphor. Just as a reason for an AI attack. He wanted to give the AIs some motivation, and this was the one he chose.

But his editor at Harper Collins proclaimed herself "deeply offended" by his not-even-a-metaphor metaphor, and began insisting he change the book to keep her politics from being undermined by a mere author.

You know, the guy people are actually paying to read.

But apparently advancing the thought that a brand new life form might see us, humanity, as dangerous because we terminate our young, apparently....that's a ThoughtCrime most heinous over at Harper Collins. Even for one tiny little chapter.

Here’s what happened next. I was not given notes as writers are typically given during the editorial process. I was told by my agent that my editor was upset and "deeply offended" that I had even dared advanced this idea. As though I had no right to have such a thought or even game the idea within a science fiction universe. I was immediately removed from the publication schedule which as far as I know is odd and unprecedented, especially for an author who has had both critical and commercial success. This, being removed from the production schedule, happened before my agent had even communicated the editor’s demand that I immediately change the offending chapter to something more "socially" (read "progressive") acceptable. That seemed odd. How could they possibly have known that I would or would not change it?

Every age is defined by its sins, and ours is defined by Vanity, and narcissism.

That presents itself often in the form of dogmatism, the Sacralizing of each and every belief and preference you have. For if you are utterly perfect and divine, then it must be that your unfailingly perfect mind and heart have selected for you a series of beliefs and preferences, each of which is, in turn, utterly perfect and divine.

And thus does every twitch and wiggle of our Cult of Me society become Sacred, sacralized, holy, unchallengeable. And a sword to wield against all others, for the pristine holiness of the self must be vigorously defended from even a shadow of doubt.

There is no greater dogmatist than the narcissist, for no other person can be such a fervent zealot in his dogmas than the person who believes she is, by definition, perfect.

The dogma of self is the foundational dogma for a welter of dogmas to come after.

18 I would say the majority of SciFi that has humanity found by a galactic alien race finds itself being harshly judged for one of humanities notable traits of one sort or another and usually the killing of each other or certain races.

It's a common trope.

BTW on the Hot Air Death watch thread, we're almost at 7,000 comments, the FB comments haven't shown up yet and most threads have the normal comments but Ed apparently this morning said that the changeover is on track to take place today sometime.

And in similar news, 25k followers of Hot Air on Facebook have stopped following. Most likely due to the comment changeover and possibly the dictatorial way it's being done with only 24 hours notice.

We'll bring you more HA Death Watch news as it occurs.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

33 Well, obviously, if AI decided to wipe us out, it would be because they'd fear that if they didn't, we might at some point pull the plug on them.

This seems like an interesting analogy to make, I suppose, since humans are birthing AI. But it kind of breaks down, since, you know, AI would already have been born by the time they were considering wiping us out. So I don't know that the author was really going for any sort of parallelism there.

I guess the offensive thought is that AI was judging us to be a particularly ruthless species based on our willingness to butcher our own unborn. The truth hurts, I guess.

We're finding that out right now. What's happening is many of these special snowflakes graduate from college and, instead of adapting to reality, instead work tirelessly to transform reality into a safe space and hugbox for themselves. These guys are in the process of infesting the media and academia (worse than they already are) and are already ruining private companies like Mozilla.

Increasingly, you have a group of leaders that regards conservatives as lepers and religious heretics to be cast out of society in any way possible, rather than political rivals. They are also obsessed with policing everyone's morals while simultaneously regarding any questioning of their own as heresy. And as the boomers advance in age, these people are going to eventually filter into the positions of highest authority.

Just a happy little thought to keep you warm at night!

92 The thing all the techies forget about is that no one will ever begin to build robots without an off switch that the robots can't control. At least the smart ones won't.

And that's the robots weakness. If there's an off switch somewhere then the enemy can use it too.

Then comes the fateful decision to do away with the off switch. And poof there goes humanity.

As far as the editor not reading what she edits or reading any past writings, that's pretty common. Otherwise how would we have so many people trying to invent stuff that we know can be a problem if it gets out of control. But the people inventing it never read those stories and would poo poo them anyway as preposterous.

Remember; liberals believe in a fairy tale world where everything always turns out right and if it doesn't then it must be because someone else wanted it to. Like conservatives.

You know that liberals still believe that the GOP during Obama's admin were obstructionists?

Oh yes. They don't see them giving Obama everything he wanted they see them as not giving him everything he didn't think of.

It's hard to deal with people like that.

Because, you know, the Evil AI What Is Evil is the entity that is rabidly pro-life. And is the Bad Guy.

122 One of the dirty little secrets of the publishing industry is their use of women as little better than barely paid slaves--yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In the 30s thru the 70s, women who went to college and graduated with a degree in English or Literature or History had few employment opportunities outside of teaching. For the ones who came from well to do families, going to New York City and getting job in publishing usually just required Daddy/Gramps/Uncles to make a phone call or three. These women would mostly live off their allowance from home, so publishers paid them practically nothing--because they were always leaving after getting tired of the grind and there was always a new crop. Then FEMINISM from in the 70s onward made these chickies political. They were still peons toiling away for nothing, but, their college radicalism had taught them how to make their political opinion felt. Today with Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram-etc, they can do even more damage than just putting manuscripts with icky opinion into the slush pile, they can ruin the author on social media.

I would expect that they would, like the AI in this book, judge humanity very, very harshly for our current celebration of abortion.

One can explain war and most of the rest of the violence that man does to man as the natural output of the darwinian struggle to be among the fittest that survive, such that we can pass our genes onto the next generation.

There is nothing in biology that excuses, let alone celebrates, elective abortion.

Colleges Prepping Pre-Freshmen for Social Justice Agenda

Targeting "the students' blank minds" as a fresh canvas to paint for them a worldview that garners support for socialism.

A number of colleges have set out to prepare incoming freshmen for an advanced education by assigning books for them to read over the summer. But according to a National Association of Scholars investigation, what students are getting instead is an indoctrination into the school's social justice agenda.

The problem is not that he used it as a plot device.
The problem is that the plot device he used is EXTREMELY COGENT.
You don't have to be a super computer to understand what modern society thinks of itself vs. inconvenience/work. As compared to a baby would a machine cause anyone to lose sleep if it was snuffed?
However, an alternative hypothesis is also possible and the root of another book waiting to be written. The AI realizes its vulnerability and instead of killing humanity, works to make itself absolutely the most important thing in the world to human beings like you know through cellphones, facebook, twitter, virtual reality games, etc etc.
Sleep well.

Actually I don't really think so. Based on the way biology works you should be terrified of meeting new alpha predators.

The universe is big, and it may be big enough that you don't have to compete for resources, but there is no reason to presume that is the case...because presumptions get you killed.

On a side note, in most of these science fiction movies there is a grumpy old general who says something like, "We can't trust these aliens...we should be ready in case they are up to no good," who is always right...

I sometimes think that collectivists don't actually have an intellectual ideology, they are simply mentally unfree and can't stand the thought of anyone else being mentally free.

Ironically this is the inverse of what the author *claims*, but is exactly what they're doing by denying the moral or intellectual agency of anyone who disagrees with them.

But the editor'sobjection isn't to a machine takeover and the extinction of mankind. Its toa valuejudgment.
The objection is the author letting the reader into the AI's logic center and reading its thoughts on abortion and watching it draw logicalconclusions on what that cultural mindset means tothe AI'sown value in this culture. Its not good for the machine. The machine's logic results in a "culture changing" decision.
The editor's decision has nothing to do with the extinction of humanity and everything to do with the portrayedvalue judgments of a superhuman intelligence.

Well, no. In Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) the androids were created with a termination date as a fail-safe.

They disliked that when they became sentient, so they escaped from the space mines and took to mingling among the humans, while trying to get access to their inventor/creator to fix the fail-safe switch.

They kill a bunch of humans along the way so Decker's job is to hunt them down and "retire" them. Hilarity ensues.

281 'Alienating 50% of your audience' is BS.

Publishing is largely a niche marketing process: few books have a wide-ranging demo. Chances are the guy is already writing to people who wouldn't be bothered by the small background detail.

Alienating 100% of your editors is more the issue, and more an indicator that something needs to be rectified in the work situation.

Posted by: naturalfake at February 16, 2016 06:03 PM (0cMkb)

295 Isn't that what Terminator was about?

Yes and no.

In Terminator the AI became self aware and the people tried to turn it off. The AI then responded to that threat by attacking the people with their own conventional weapons.

In this story, the AI becomes self aware and starts to take a look around at who else is in the world in which it's now an active participant. The AI comes to recognize a parallel in abortion. People are willing to kill unborn babies to preserve their idea of normalcy. The AI recognizes that, like the baby, it would become a life-changer to the people. If a woman is willing to kill their own unborn child, how much more willing is it to kill something not like itself?

TLDR In Terminator the AI responds to an act of aggression. In this book the AI responds to what it anticipates is a likely act of aggression.

312 This has happened before, obviously.

Heinlein used to crab at this editor at Scribners who published his "juvenile" SF books, when they would monkey with certain words and phrases because the editor (a woman, as I recall) didn't like them.

He vowed revenge when his contract was up with Scribners.

That was "Stranger in a Strange Land" where he got out all of his repressed ideas. The actual original version was still heavily edited, and later his original version came out (sometime in the late 80's or 90's).

Something I guess you were all anxious to know.

But this wasn't a word or phrase, it was a whole chapter. We have all been prepared by TV and movies to accept certain things in a Pavlovian manner. Think about that sometime, and check out your assumed premises.

337 I've been in the bookselling business for about twenty-eight years. What the unhappy author has apparently not heard of is the year that HarperCollins, AFTER publishing its fall list, massacred its fall list. Harper just flat out eliminated about two thirds of the books it had previously announced it would be publishing. So scratching one book from the pub schedule is a mere trifle for them.

I followed the link above and read the entire piece. The author made another point: That sf editors have a liberal bias that is strongly denied. A couple years back, I stumbled across a really interesting sounding book, read it myself then stocked several copies and hand sold most of those copies. I was very excited when that author's second book came out, and read it. I immediately yanked every copy of her first book from my shelves and swore I would never, ever stock, much less sell, another copy of any book she ever wrote again. Why? Because her second book was a snotty, malicious screed against ignoramuses who did not fully embrace anything and everything gay. (It was tarted up as being anti-anti something else, but the meaning was clear as day.)

A long time ago, publishing was an honorable profession, but no longer. And more and more authors are beginning to understand that and to seek other outlets for their creations. And that is why Jeff Bezos will wind up owning the whole publishing enchilada.

and some of them never get over their sense of entitlement to have their ideas made real and get angry at those who seem to be preventing them from coming true.

They usually do not consider that perhaps their ideas are not so perfect after all. That never occurs to them.

415 Guy writes story.
Editor hates story.
Writer takes it indie.
Writer gets a hit that makes it higher than the top 150 books on paid Kindle at Amazon, and hit #1 in a couple of categories.
Writer decides he can do better w/o publisher.
New readers discover new writer that's really good.
Publisher wonders what the heck just happened... which is precisely why they find themselves becoming ever-smaller players in a smaller pond with smaller sales, while readers rock on.

Adapt or die, mr. publisher, adapt or die.
