Two great MilBlogs (XBradTC)

How many of you remember the fantastic Navy blogger Neptunus Lex? Lex was a prolific, and terrific, writer. After his death in 2012, it turned out, the family didn't have his passwords to his account, and so eventually his blog simply went away. Fortunately, one of his readers had saved a fair portion of his posts. And with the permission of his family, one of my coauthors is posting his work on one of my sideblogs. No one is making any money off this. It's simply there to get his works back out in the public sphere. If you were a fan of Lex, you'll love reading the early stuff again. If you never heard of Lex, you're definitely going to want to read his stuff. Even if you're not into MilBlogs, I highly encourage you to read him. He wrote as a human first, and a milblogger second.

Seriously, four years after his death and his community is still growing. What's that tell you about him as a man and a writer?

Read here, at The Lexicans
.

Next up, TSO at the popular This Ain't Hell wanted to do something special for the Caisson Platoon of The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb Guards get all the media attention. But the horse soldiers of the Caisson Platoon do their job day in and day out laying to rest America's finest.

Take a look at some of the supporters of the effort, to include Medal of Honor recipients Sal Giunta, Kyle White and Ryan Pitts.

In less than 24 hours, the TAH community raised more than $3000 to provide a special challenge coin for the platoon and future members.

I was going to ask you to support this effort, but they've already exceeded their goal. But do go and learn a bit about the Caisson Platoon.

Here's a good video on them
.

And finally, if any of you care, xbradtc.com is back up. We'll eventually get the archives back up and running as well.

10 This speaks more to the cultural question of the legacy of blogs and bloggers. Are they "of the moment," or is there something of value to be preserved?

I have to admit, that's one reason I never pursued blogging myself. I figured the things I have to say are important, and the format doesn't really do it justice.

I realize that's an awfully self-indulgent perspective, but hey, I love me, and happen to think about me quite often.

11 "After his death in 2012, it turned out, the family didn't have his
passwords to his account, and so eventually his blog simply went away."

One would think that could be handled through the probate process unless the decedent had made a specific stipulation to deny them access.

These mass market blogging platforms aren't locked so tightly that admin staff aren't able to get in to them to do things like password changes.

14 Speaking of defunct bloggers...

Serious question:

If bernie wins the nomination, I will go to Vermont, dig up all the dirt on him, and destroy his candidacy.

HOWEVER:

a. I don't want to waste my time digging up dirt on him if Hillary is gonna win anyway;

HOWEVER:

b. If he eventually does win the nomination, his minions will start running around "disappearing" all the most embarrassing stuff about Bernie in various libraries and archives, so that y the time I get there, perhaps such of the juiciest skeletons will have disappeared.

So -- should I jump the gun and go to Vermont soon-ish to beat the History Deleters?

Or is that a fool's errand, because Hillary is still the favorite?

30 15 For the life of me, I can not remember who, but someone else posted his loss on Lex's own blog that morning.
So, at that point, someone had the keys to it.

Whisper was co-blogger; however, all hosting, billing, etc., were purely in Lex's name and purview, so only he knew the information.

And that's the problem; while a multitude of members have paid costs covering the blog out for near perpetuity, nobody can get "in" to turn it back on, hosting side.

The URL is still owned, etc, and at last word the data is still there- it's just making it re-accessible again.

Between the Lexicans and the Internet Archive, however, most everything he wrote is still close at hand with a bit of effort.

I'm not concerned that other researchers will be (and have been) doing the same thing; I'm concerned that a. It will be pointless because will lose the nom; OR b. Bernie's minions will Sandy-Berger-ize the worst stuff once he he DOES get the nom.

What I'm NOT concerned about is other people duplicating my effort. Because they are not as good at searching as I am.

And LinkedIn, damn their eyes, keeps telling me about his birthday and how I should email and congratulate him. Nobody had the keys to that login either.

Depends on the blank loads. One of the criteria for the M-1 was that it cycle properly with training blanks. Not so with the M-14. During training a restrictor is placed over the muzzle in order to drive bore pressures up, and cycle the action.

My guess is that manual cycling is preferred under the circumstances.

While nothing is certain, I believe that there is a very good chance that Bernie Sanders will be the Democrat nominee in November based mostly on what a terrible candidate Hillary Clinton has proven to be. In spite of all the assistance she got from the media and the Democrat establishment, Hillary Clinton lost a tight race in Iowa and a blowout in New Hampshire. She has to appeal to black voters in South Carolina and although they liked her husband, I don't think that they like her.

Not, obviously, an intercontinental ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead. One of Ivan's export model theater ballistic missiles with a conventional warhead.

Worthy of comment: that the Houthis were dismissed as raggedy-assed illiterate irregulars, and yet they're proving capable of operating complex long-range high-tech weapons systems to devastating effect. Putin's thumb on the scales?

Also worthy of comment: these TBMs, since they are a Russian-designed system, will just as easily deliver a chemical warhead full of nerve gas as they will a conventional explosive payload.

Basically all the Democrats in South Carolina are black but they do not seem to be all that excited about either of the old white people in the Democrat primary. I wonder how many black voters will take advantage of the open primary to vote for Ben Carson purely on the basis of race.

Probably not enough for Carson to win but maybe enough for him to come in second.

Every now and then, two buglers would coordinate an 'Echo Taps', where one on one side of the installation would begin, and then a beat or two later the other one, removed by a 1/4 mile or so, would blow an echo. I can still remember lying in my bunk and hearing that. It was an immediate connection to decades and decades of soldiers.

I can still hear it, if I listen.
