It's a block print, so it's going to have outlines and contour lines rather than brush work. That's the nature of the medium.

And I wouldn't say that block print is the entirety of Jpns art.

Oh, yes indeed. Part of the strategic bombing campaign by the summer of 1945 was picking out a few Japanese cities to not firebomb so that when they were nuked people would be able to tell the difference. The thing is that LeMay was starting to run out of cities to bomb flat and burn the remains with a firestorm.

I had occasion to do some business once at the Boeing space shuttle facility, up near Edwards AFB, a good ways north of Los Angeles. The employee parking lot was packed with beat-up pickup trucks and Harleys, and once inside, the workforce was the most amazing collection of desert rats: guys with graying ponytails halfway down their back, guys missing teeth and the occasional eye, skin like parchment. It looked like the front three rows of a Willie Nelson concert.

These guys built and flew warplanes during WWII, and became the people who took us to the Moon, and then built the space shuttles.

The diamonds are caused by old style curly quotes rather than plain straight quotes or newer unicode curly quotes. I'd guess some of the cobloggers are using older versions of Internet Explorer which enable "smart quotes" by default. Copying and pasting posts written in older versions of Word into almost any browser would cause the same problem too.

A couple of things stand out about that typhoon. When it was my and a buddy's turn to go get food at the distribution point, we'd been soaked for days. On our way, the eye passed overhead. We skipped along in the sunshine to get the food, and skipped along back. As soon as we got back to our canopy shelter and dropped off the food, the rains started again Everyone hated the two of us.

When we were evacuated, we were taken to a grade school up in the mountains. The little old ladies there prepared us 'snacks', which were seaweed covered rice balls stuffed with jellyfish. Those didn't go over to well.

Reuben: "But who are they?"
Bernie: "Hard hitting mercenary feminists that solve problems. Janet 'Tank' Reno just smashes through things; Gloria 'Bunny' Steinam uses her charm, and their leader Madeline 'Half-Wit' Albright is the dangerous one, always coming up with wacky plans."
Reuben: "Wacky plans work in real life?"
Bernie: "No, she just kicks them down the road so someone else gets the career-ending blame."

Just then Tank Reno opens a sliding door and grabs hold of the bus, letting Bunny and Half-Wit cross over to cling to the side of the bus.
Bunny: "We're feminists, you have to let us in or it wouldn't be fair."
College Student: "Unfair, that's like...unfair!" He opens a window and the two members of the Vee-Jay Team board the bus.
Bernie: "Reuben! Stop them!"
Reuben tries to deploy his oily charm to no avail. 'You ladies look like you could have futures in the music industry."
Bunny: "I need you like a hamster needs a treadmill."
Reuben: "What? I thought..."
Bunny: Bicycling fish are passé. Especially after that mutant fish in China was caught."
Half-Wit: "Here's a basketball signed by Michael Jordan, now go play with yourself. We got some negotiating to do with you, Sanders!"
Mesmerized by the rubber orange ball Reuben lets them past, the crack mercenary feminists approaching their target.

I was working in Yokohama back in, oh, 1994, or thereabouts, when the city was hit by a typhoon and an earthquake on the same day.

An incident like that gives you a sense of where the Japanese get the whole gojirra thing.

Until they showed her face? Lucky for me I could only see her breasts.

Why is Ted Nugent calling out anti-gun Democrats anti-semitic or newsworthy? If acknowledging that the average American Jew who votes is quite liberal makes someone anti-Semitic then I guess I am as well. Do people on this site not know that American Jews are virtually all lefties who want to take away our rights and have been since opinion polling started. I know it's a knee-jerk reaction on behalf of conservatives and Republicans to defend Jews and call anything and everything anti-Semitic (which by the way is exactly the same thing liberals do with anyone criticizing Muslims or Islam) but we should really just accept that Jews have always been progressive liberals and stop assuming that having a hawkish or "Pro-Israel" foreign policy is going to get them to change their minds; they don't care about foreign policy or Israel, like other liberals they care about domestic political/cultural power above all else.

When a guy hit a HR a girl dressed in a skin tight black leather dress and boots came out of the dugout and waited for the guy to round the bases. 380 That scene in Animal House where the kid is saying his bedtime prayers when a half-nikkid sorority girl comes flying through the bedroom window. That's the American Way.

John Belushi hopping the ladder over to see the sorority girl's undressing. Classic.

Yeah, how many times have we seen a tweeted photo of an elementary school-aged ISIS kid actively killing, or playing with the decapitated head an ISIS foe? What is to be done with these kids --- are they salvagable, or will they just become the next generation of jihadi murderers?

386 Finally finished with DrewM's Cruz v Rubio thread. I usually can't hang on in those brawls for very long, but I stuck this one out.

So many non-regulars with the concern trollish opinions, so unlike the regulars who (mostly) write intelligently and (relatively) respectfully even in extreme disagreement.

There were some good, thought-provoking comments. And a couple of mine.

Need to de-tox now, though. Art thread is good for that.

If they were smart, they'd wait until after the election to improve the Dems chances of winning. Like Barry, I'm pretty sure Hill or Bernie would rather focus on persecuting their domestic enemies than going after ISIS. Given that the average LIV has the attention span and vision of an eyeless Japanese fish, the San Bern attack will be forgotten by November if there are no other big attacks between now and the election.

At this rate, the swing back will be because the ME fields are all radioactive and goods can no longer move across oceans effectively.

Yet another reason to consider crash reindustrialization for the US: "comparative advantage" only works in the absence of externalities like general total warfare.

Pretty sure the Viets just turned their killers inwards, towards re-educating recalcitrant capitalist running dogs that refused to accept the inevitability of the worker's paradise (along with a side trip through war with China in '79).

But a big difference is that for the Viets, genocide was largely a matter of politics alone, for the mohammedans it's politics, religion, tribalism and culture all mixed together in a toxic stew.
