I will say this, speaking of the last thread, and this one, as well:
The chief objection to the dive-bomber is its lack of a good aerodynamic profile. The fronts of the damned things were ginormous, and they needed insanely powerful engines, to accommodate and carry the massive balls of their pilots. Jeez - Imagine diving, headlong, at a bunch of guys who are trying, desperately, to blast you out of the sky before you drop your ordnance and manage - you hope - to pull out of a nearly-suicidal dive. I like to ask people who say we spend too much money developing new aircraft / weapons to stay a generation ahead of everyone to think whether Hitler would have started WWII if Britain had the F-80 as their fighter. A plane that was in service less than a decade after the US entered WWII.

The LOACH guys in the hunter-killer teams in Vietnam. These guys would fly right down into the canopy, looking for NVA and VC. The guy beside the pilot would spray the bush with an SMG and toss grenades, trying to pick a fight. They take fire, pop smoke to mark the location, and let Puff or an Apache take care of it....
