The perforated dive flaps were a signature item of the Northrop BT-1 and its improved descendant the Douglas SBD Dauntless. The perforations eliminated the buffeting encountered during a dive.
The Dauntless' replacement the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver originally did not have the perforations in the dive flaps which limited their effectiveness as dive-bombers. Finally with a lot of other changes the -3 Helldiver received perforated dive flaps, but by late 1944 the need for a dive bomber had all but disappeared since most of the Japanese navy was already on the sea bottom. That dark square hole in the fuselage behind the rear gunner's position is where the inflatable life raft is stored.
The three box slots on the leading edge of each wing is another signature item of the Dauntless. Along with the non-folding wing since the SBD does not use wing-spares, instead it used the patented Northrop multicellular design. Posted by: Anna Puma at February 06, 2016 02:50 PM (+Ifkm) 49

Bingo. Other dive bombers used fixed landing gear to slow the dive speed, e.g., Aichi Val Type 99 and German Ju-87 Stuka. Only Dauntlesses had perforated flaps to slow/control the dive. Posted by: LGoPs at February 06, 2016 02:57 PM (SK7CK) 68

This photo is part of a series about a clutch of planes dumped in the Pacific. They were discovered last year.
From ABC News here is a side view of what looks like the same SBD. Notice the windscreen looks intact. And an identifying feature of the -5 and -6 Dauntless is the lack of a telescopic sight sticking through windscreen. The radio antenna mast in front of the cockpit is made from wood and is in remarkable condition compared to the fabric covered control surfaces. http://preview.tinyurl.com/j7xbpk3 Posted by: Anna Puma at February 06, 2016 02:58 PM (+Ifkm) 70

I don't recall which titles/authors anymore, mostly because these were the pre-internet shopping days, and I found essentially none of the books. Obviously I didn't try as hard as I thought when I started out. My attentions wax and wane on particular topics. Right now, I think I'm more or less not looking for WWII titles. Ricardo Kill, what doomed VT-8, VT-6, and Yorktown's polyglot torpedo squadron along with the attacks from Midway did not involve the quality or lack of from the planes. It was the lack of fighter escort.
In early '42, a US carrier air group consisted of 12 or maybe 18 F4F-3 Wildcat fighters, 36 SBD-3 Dauntless dive bombers, and 18 TBD-1 Devastator torpedo bombers. Of the three types embarked at Midway, only the TDB had folding wings even though it was the oldest plane type on the carriers. So the carriers tended to keep the Wildcats for a CAP. The shortage of fighters at Coral Sea prompted USS Lexington to use SBDs as an inner anti-torpedo bomber CAP. For Midway, it is more tragic since Major Red Parks decided to throw his F2A Brewster Buffaloes and F4F-3 Wildcats at the Japanese attacking Midway instead of trying to escort the SB2U-3s and SBD-2/-3s of the VMSB as he had been ordered to. Parks' fighters were all but exterminated which became the fate of most of the Marine bomber pilots. I knew it was a Douglas Dauntless SBD, see nothing to say which model except if we know it's a 1944 that would say a later model unless someone sees something a lot of changes were engine and modifications were internal between 3 and 6 versions

Posted by: Old Blue at February 06, 2016 03:54 PM (9iR5/) I didn't know that, but I do know that the low wing design made for a pretty pronounced ground effect on takeoff and landing. Had a couple of flights into Mayo, Yukon on a DC-3. Approaching touchdown, you could actually feel the ground effect buoying the aircraft up. Sort of a featherbed feel in your butt. Awesome airplane. The most likely type of plane to be shot down in the ocean was the low flying torpedo bomber - Avenger etc. The design looks like a type of torpedo bomber also.

SBD-4 Dauntless - A three-bladed Hamilton-Standard propeller with a prominent hub boss replaced the earlier propeller. Some -4s were also fitted with underwing L-shaped aerials for the Yagi search radar. SBD-5 - carburetor air scoop on top of cowling has been removed. Reflector gun sight replaced the telescopic gun sight. Yagi search radar and antennas become standard equipment. SBD-6 - visually indistinguishable from the -5 unless carrying drop tanks. Amazingly, many of the planes have remained intact, with only a few broken tails and wings littering the floor.
Brandi Mueller, from Cameron, Wisconsin, captured the planes while scuba diving around five miles from Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands. The 31-year-old was taking time off from her coastguard job to teach diving when she came across the incredible find. She told MailOnline: 'They call it the "Airplane Graveyard" - they aren't war graves or planes that crashed. They were planes that were taken out over the reef and pushed off intact after the war ended. 'For me, diving on airplanes, especially World War Two airplanes is really unique. Diving on shipwrecks seems normal, you expect ships to have sunk. 'But seeing planes underwater is strange, planes don't belong in the water, they belong in the sky, so it feel weird to dive on them. But amazing and special too. And because these planes didn't sink because of the war they are special. 'They should have flown more, lived longer, but they were sunk in perfect condition.' Her pictures also show other Allied aircraft including Helldivers, B-25 Mitchell, Curtiss C-46 Commando and F4F Wildcats. The planes would have been dumped into the ocean off of aircraft carriers and transport ships after the successful Pacific Campaign ended in victory for the US in August 1945. That's a Douglas Dauntless SBD. Can't be a Devastator because those were pretty much all shot down over deeper water. Can't be after '44 because we were switching to the Curtis's Helldiver which was larger and had a very different wing and tail. I'd say that was photographed in the Solomons ca. 1943.

The first Japanese Zero was captured on the Aleutian campaign. A Zero wax having engine trouble and saw a nice field to land, only it was a bog so he hit the ground it flipped immediately upside down killing him. We were south of Houston (there are a huge number of airports around here but I don't know about military bases). Son swears it has wings, but they couldn't have been very large. After I asked I thought of it maybe being a blimp, but it was moving pretty fast (not zipping along, but definitely moving). Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 06, 2016 06:25 PM (GDulk) 471

No Anna no peace Posted by: ThunderB at February 06, 2016 05:08 PM (zOTsN) No; it's just that it's not much of a game when she plays. I mean she called it at #5 for crying out loud. Posted by: rickl at February 06, 2016 06:25 PM (sdi6R) 473

I guess, attack helicopter (but big) is what I meant. When I did an image search of "gunship" it shows both planes and helicopters. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 06, 2016 06:27 PM (GDulk) 476

OK, just got here (shooting - so shoot me, er, well .....). First thought when seeing this was - unless Anna steps back and remains silent (we'd all quickly grant that she probably knew the answer instantly), this is a game that's over before it starts. So, not having looked back at #5, gonna guess SBD Dauntless. Just based on overall size match, what appears to be a fairly longish cockpit area, and especially what look like the SBD's distinctive dive brakes on the trailing edges. So, now to go check .... Ha! For the win. Er, well, a small personal moral victory, maybe. As I said, overall size and the trailing edge of the wings were all I was going on. So happens there's an SBD being restored at a place I volunteer, though I've only seen it once. So do we know where this dive site/plane is? It's a Nakajima Ki-43. (Japanese) Army Type 1 fighter code-named "Oscar." It had an all-around vision canopy and a radial engine. The Ki-43 shot down more allied aircraft than any other fighter and was light and could out-maneuver opponents. Almost every Japanese war ace flew one to achieve their record of kills.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 06, 2016 06:25 PM (GDulk) Big and tapered, moving fast, small wings, not immediately obvious to most people (like "oh, that's an Apache"), could make it an MH-53 or variant, but you probably would have heard the rotors. Without more detail I got nothin' right now, sorry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_MH-53 Posted by: hogmartin at February 06, 2016 06:38 PM (NA5LM) 483

SBD Dauntless. Clue: perforated Dive Brakes on the trailing edge. When I was a kid, I built a couple dozen 1/4" scale WWII fighters. Monogram made the best ones with working parts like retractable landing gear and the Dauntless had operable dive brakes and a working bomb "sling" that would push the belly mounted bomb away from the prop when it was released. ( I wonder if that was added as a result of accidental collisions by the bomb with the prop in early test flights)

Definitely an SBD
Posted by: 1metairiemike at February 06, 2016 11:00 PM (JVj6O) 490
Not a Zero. Those are air brakes (those holes) on the trailing edge of the wing and only a dive bomber needs that to slow it down when it's in a vertical dive. The zero doesn't have that feature because it's a fighter

It appears to be a Douglas SBD Dauntless.
Posted by: Kristopher at February 07, 2016 08:05 AM (H3wCY) 493
It's definitely an SBD Dauntless. The perforated dive brakes on the wing trailing edge give it away. Here's a pic of an intact one for comparison.

as someone said before it is an SBD...
