Our Headlong Charge Back To Pre-Industrial Society (CBD)

cocktail sign.jpg

Sometime commenter and beer guru Beeerslinger sent this along. Cocktail guide offers recipes made with urine. it reminded me of the discussion (was it yesterday) about tiny houses, and the Left's desire to return to a pre-industrial-revolution quality of life. People drank urine because they were ignorant of science, and relied on alchemists and "physicians" to cure their ailments. But we know exactly what urine is....waste products from metabolism, and the body balancing various other compounds. This is not clever deduction....this is well known. Because 2,500 years of Western philosophy and intellectual development has taught us how to study the world and discern facts from bullshit. And drinking urine is bullshit -- it hearkens back to an ignorance based on lack of knowledge -- but we don't have that excuse any more.

Am I making too much of this? Is this simply a bunch of rich people with too much time on their hands? 10 years ago I would have laughed, and chalked this up to stupidity and boredom. But I am now deeply suspicious of any attempt to reject science and logic. And I think this is exactly that.

But......

Seamus Muldoon brings up an excellent point.

maybe it is not so much a rejection of science as it is a rejection of statistics. By that I mean, the element of society that you are reading about in such an article have rejected a sense of 'normal' in the statistical sense. Perhaps it stems from a deep-rooted desire (which they change to mean a 'need' or even a 'God-given right') to stand out from the crowd. If someone is unable to achieve excellence in a productive way, they might seek excellence in a self-destructive way.

There should still be nothing wrong with reaching one's potential (give it your best), but if that puts you within two standard deviations from the mean in everyday things, it just isn't enough to make someone feel special these days. Hence the rampant celebration of the ever more aberrant. They have to be hipper and edgier than the hip and edgy.

No, not in the abstract. Everything you write is accurate, and this is yet another example of "Dude, don't you even science?" mentality at work. These are the same morons who believe that the oceans will rise 100 feet next year, and other such tripe.

OTOH, there is still enough common sense in enough people that I don't believe this will become wide-spread. I ain't drinking pee, and nobody in my family is drinking pee, and none of my friends are drinking pee, etc., because that is just disgusting.

And that's why, outside of NYC and San Franfreakshow and other such bastions of lunacy, this won't catch on - and even there, it won't last long.

Lacking a spiritual relationship with The Creator, they can only envision the sensations of the flesh as a poor substitute for enlightenment.

To a baby, having it's ass wiped with a warm wet cloth feels good, and so they pursue that infantile fulfillment for the remainder of their days.

Seeing an erstwhile "adult" reduced to defecating on a police car "in protest", is but a manifestation of these fixations.

87 Simpler idea....

Humans have an innate need to believe in something.

Whether a code of conduct, religion, a philosophy.... the human mind will search until it finds something.

Since most of the Left have dismissed Western Religion... American values were degraded and dismissed in Schools (no Patriotism)... and you can't believe your CULTURE is better (multiculturalism)...

The more healthy normal outlets for that belief are denied to the Left....

So they go whack job. They believe in Global Warming like a religion... they believe in the BLM crap... they believe that somehow the Gay lifestyle is superior...

Because to admit that the West has done some good thing... had some good thought... come up with some good philosophies... they must then be willing to DEFEND those things...

So, we then get whack job ideas followed with religious fervor....

maybe it is not so much a rejection of science as it is a rejection
of statistics. By that I mean, the element of society that you are
reading about in such an article have rejected a sense of 'normal' in
the statistical sense. Perhaps it stems from a deep-rooted desire
(which they change to mean a 'need' or even a 'God-given right') to
stand out from the crowd. If someone is unable to achieve excellence in
a productive way, they might seek excellence in a self-destructive way.

There should still be nothing wrong with reaching one's potential
(give it your best), but if that puts you within two standard deviations
from the mean in everyday things, it just isn't enough to make someone
feel special these days. Hence the rampant celebration of the ever more
aberrant. They have to be hipper and edgier than the hip and edgy.

I'm just thinking out loud here, could be wrong.

I think that this is pretty close. A whole lot of what hipsters do is "signaling" sometimes it is virtue signaling and sometimes it is signaling that one is not part of the boring bourgeoisie. A significant fraction of the population in New York were raised somewhere else where they were malcontents. They moved to someplace where their inability to fit into normal society is seen as a virtue.

Reminds me of the time I was working in an adolescent clinic back in the day. A mom rushed in late on a Friday afternoon with her teenaged son in tow. "Are you still open?"

"Yes, we are, how can I help you."

"I'm just glad you can see him today, I think he has a cold and I was afraid he would be better by Monday."

After checking him over I said, "Don't be afraid, he does, and he will."

Guess I could have given her a homeopathic "cure" or had him drink his own urine. The result of the cold would have been the same and she might have thought I was a genius instead of a smart ass.

The problem with homeopathic remedies is not that they won't work, it's that they haven't been shown to work under rigorously controlled trials.

What most people know, even if we don't think about it, is that we get better. Because our bodies are designed to do that. So whatever it is that ails us, more often than not, merely letting our bodies heal themselves will do the trick. So when we take "something" immediately after developing symptoms, and all through the course of our illness, and we then get better?

We can attribute that to the stuff we took, but really, we don't know. We can't know. And if there isn't any credible evidence out there that it does work? I have no interest in fooling myself into believing it did.

One day this summer I was riding through Letchworth when the bus stopped and two dreadful-looking old men got on to it. They were both about sixty, both very short, pink, and chubby, and both hatless. One of them was obscenely bald, the other had long grey hair bobbed in the Lloyd George style. They were dressed in pistachio-coloured shirts and khaki shorts into which their huge bottoms were crammed so tightly that you could study every dimple. Their appearance created a mild stir of horror on top of the bus. The man next to me, a commercial traveller I should say, glanced at me, at them, and back again at me, and murmured "Socialists", as who should say, "Red Indians". He was probably right - the I.L.P. were holding their summer school at Letchworth. But the point is that to him, as an ordinary man, a crank meant a Socialist and a Socialist meant a crank.

You are confusing homeopathy with herbalism. And yes, herbalism works for a lot of simple things. For example, my favorite treatment for heartburn is cider vinegar. But homeopathy is different, mostly involving the dilution of substances to the point where none of the "active" ingredient remains, and then using that for treatment. Needless to say, it is bogus.

163 Backing up FenelonSpoke on efficaciousness of homeopathy. Used it for 30 years and have seen some dang near miracles. If it's all placebo effect, that's some pretty good placebo effect.

1. Much of what is called homeopathy isn't.

2. Homeopathy is not easy, with thousands of remedies and a variety of dosages.

3. I've never seen testing of homeopathy that was done right. (E.g. if it marshalls the body's own defenses, you won't get the effect in a petri dish.)

4. As FS says, it's not a cure-all. There's a remedy that allegedly helps bone healing, but it won't set the break for you.

5. eman: By what mechanism does it work?
There are theories, one good theory I saw posted here one night years ago, but there is nothing at all shown about how or why it should work.

6. It's crazy stuff. If I hadn't seen so many cures for so many decades, I wouldn't believe it myself.

7. If you want to compare with "slow degradation" to voodoo and alchemy, I'd suggest acupuncture and acupressure, aromatherapy, healing hands, magnetic healing, crystals, reflexology, and any number of other possibilities would be better argument than homeopathy. Even most "herbal" cures are BS, despite herbs being the basis for so much good medicine.

This is spot-on. Some herbal remedies work well and often without the side effects of modern medicines. The aforementioned ginger for nausea, for example, and doctors have used the silymarin from milk thistle to prevent liver damage in mushroom poisoning cases. You could boil down willow bark tea to cure a headache effectively, it's just that aspirin is easier to find and administer.

The term 'homeopathy' sounds like it would be herbal remedies but in its modern form it's basically taking something like garlic oil and diluting it down to one part per billion because ~reasons~. I guess you get a nice glass of water out of the deal since the 'active ingredient' is absolutely undetectable.

Posted by: hogmartin at February 06, 2016 12:02 PM (NA5LM)

179 Homeopathy is scientifically proven to be worthless in any medical sense. But then, most medicine is just to make you feel better while you heal on your own. Aspirin doesn't make the headache go away, it makes you feel less of its pain. Almost no medicine actually cures, it just hides symptoms.

201 "10 years ago I would have laughed, and chalked this up to stupidity and boredom."

10 years ago words had different meanings too. This definition drift is not due any Orwellian 'New Speak' thought control conspiracy. I think this is a concurrent change in culture and the language. Any attempt to stop the drift in an attempt to stop cultural change is cargo cult thinking ("return to a pre-industrial-revolution").

Take liberal and conservative - historically they had a couple of sets of definitions - any change is good vs. no change is good, and support for individua rights vs. slavery vs something (I don't know). And now, liberal is indistinguishable from progressive / socialism, and conservative is supposedly the opposite (but if it really is then we haven't seen it as an effective policy).

Whatever 'conservative' is, if you 'Bing' a candidate's name you will get an Bing produced overview of the candidate's views on a traditional left-right scale with 'conservative' on the right and 'progressive' on the left (WTF?!).
At least the democrat party is honest enough and has one candidate who is an open socialist and another who cannot say there is a difference between liberal and socialist.

On the republican side, we are chock full of GOPe and RINO... Back to pre-inductrial thought, quit refering to the GOPe and RINO, the GOP is what it is and nobody there is in a leadership position because they don't toe the party line.

It's perfectly possible for a society to deliberately deindustrialize itself and continue to enjoy and use technologies and manufactured goods imported from industrial nations elsewhere.

229 216 206 I completely disagree with the cuisine discussion I see going on here. Peasants ate whatever they could get their hands on, yes. But all of the "haute cuisine" food crazes of the past ten years were street food, peasant food, that some chef came along and gussied it up. The korean BBQ taco phenomenon is a good example.

Sushi, tapas, bacon, lobster, pho, all food made on street carts that got picked up by the chic. "Fusion cuisine" is western chefs cooking shit their little brothers ran in into in 'Nam.

Bzzzt. Wrong. You are conflating homeopathy and naturopathy, which are competing brands of quackery. Herbs and plants: naturopathy. Homeopathy is based on the quaint notion that you can cure a disease by administering a dilute dose of a chemical that induces symptoms similar to those caused by the disease. And homeopathic "medicines" are indeed diluted so extremely, that it's a coin-flip that any given dose contains as much as one molecule of the "active ingredient". But homeopaths will tell you it doesn't matter, because the water molecules have been somehow influenced by the presence of the active ingredient.

In the following phase, participants will slaughter their own animals, and harvest their own vegatables.

Soon, partakers will get to have the 'authentic experience' of all of the above, plus doing the cooking.

If you think I am kidding about this, consider, a local winery charges people to come and pick grapes. They come by the flock, for 'the experience'.

Example: she used to put a handful of clay into a pot of beans as they cooked - old hill-billy trick to thicken the soup and add micro-minerals......

Another example - red-eye gravy. Talk about fucking genius - fry the meat and eat it, use the old or burnt coffee (often made with chicory or even, she once confided, with roasted corn and acorns) to "de-glaze" (or clean, as she said) the skillet, and you've got sauce to pour over it....

Naturopathy isn't quackery, its the origin of thousands of modern remedies and medicine. There are some BS remedies out there, but much of it is quite useful and valid. For example, herbalists used to prescribe willow bark for pain... which contains the same chemical as used in aspirin for pain relief. Stuff like Valerian to help you sleep is very well established and known. That's a totally different ballgame than giving someone a picogram of a substance and pretending that heals you.

Yep. Most modern medicines derive from plants and some animals, many of which had been the basis of some old treatments. Nature is the best medical researcher around. But there is something a bit weird about going back to the original plants in preference to the modern formulations and derivatives. ... unless cost is the main driver - but, then, most herbal remedies are outrageously priced so that can't be the motivation.

I never get this. If I want to take a homeopathic remedy, it won't hurt me. Maybe it won't work, but that can also be true of regular drugs. My doctor prescribed Fosamax. Have you ever read the warnings on it? It is supposed to pull calcium from your soft tissue and put it into your bones. But it can cause fractures of the thigh bone! Yet another Faux Hate Crime has taken place; this time five girls from
University of Albany SUNY claimed white guys called them racist names
and attacked them on a bus. The usual suspects got involved, but when
the video and audio evidence from twelve cameras on the bus was examined, zero evidence any such thing remotely happened was found.

Its the first faux hate crime I've run across so far this year.
Last year it averaged 1 a month, I expect that to ramp up this year.

No question. Modern medicine has turned us into a nation of junkies. We worry about the dealers on the street, but there is a Walgreens or CVS on every corner...

Still, if a drug makes it to market, there's a pretty good chance it's been analyzed to the point of knowing what the chances are it's going to help any given patient with a collection of symptoms, while at the same time noting the possible undesired effects.

That's better than "maybe it'll help/maybe it won't." Perhaps not better for some to take the risks, but you have the information ahead of time. And theoretically you are talking to an expert who is prescribing it.

312 I take Calmes Forte (to help me sleep) and I've taken the remedy for leg cramps, which contains quinine. Both work for me.

I have learned more by readingThe Fourfold Path to Healing (written by a doctor that is knowledgable about herbalism) than I have ever learned at Web MD. Did you know doctors are still pushing that low fat, low salt nonsense?

Posted by: Notsothoreau at February 06, 2016 01:20 PM (Lqy/e)

313 Doctors are really slow to adapt the new, particularly if it requires them to admit "yeah I was wrong" at any point.

314 Imagine if you will, Hipster Johnny. Hair buzzed short on the sides, long on top, and slicked straight back. Half-inch holes adorn his ears, an "epic" beard almost concealing his lip piercing. The end of a tattoo sticking out from the top of his Woolrich plaid flannel shirt, and more showing on his forearms, bared from the 2-roll of his sleeves.
Skinny jeans held up by a wide rhinestone studded belt, stretched over scrawny legs. Wolverine 1000 mile chukkas complete the look.

Sitting on the seat of his bike, a 2015 Vespa, arms splayed casually over the handlebars, hands caressing his latest participation trophy, watching as a young hipsterette heads in his direction. He turns his head away indifferently, listening as her Doc Martens clomp ever closer.
"Nice trophy you got there, Johnny." she says.
"Whatevs. It's yours." He flips it to her dismissively.

"Are you a rebel, Johnny?"
"Mmm" he say with half of an affirmative nod.
"What are you rebelling against?"
"Whattya got?" he sneers.

Taken aback, she blurts "Um, don't drink your piss?"

He reaches down and graps his BPA-free naglene one litre bottle, and flips open the lid.
Glug, glug glug glug glug...."Ahhh" he says, and wipes what escaped his mouth through the hole in his lip with his sleeve.

"You're not the boss of me, MA!" He lisps. He fires up the angry Vespa, and putters away. She watches him leave, her heart racing ever faster.

What a stupid time to be alive.

I asked my doctor about it. He said the medical community has not released the "study" yet and they can't do anything until that happens.

I don't worry about salt anyway. When I first had my heart attack the heart doctor said that unless it caused high blood pressure to not worry about it. I ate a bunch of salty stuff and took my BP every hour. No change.

317 Progressives have always loved the pre-industrial past, since Rousseau's "noble savage" (which, surprise, surprise, was anything but noble; they're just as fucked up as we are).

So they romanticize the past without understanding what it really meant to do back-breaking labor under someone else's lash, whether slavery, serfdom or wage-slavery.

And like people who believe in reincarnation, they're never going to be the person at the end of the lash. They're going to be the ones wielding it. When they finish pulling the supports out from under society, they'll make sure (or believe) they'll be on top.

I believe the reasons for that are mostly legal. A lot of medical activity (over-testing, needless dietary restrictions, etc.) is designed to minimize the danger of lawsuits for negligence or malpractice.

320 The studies they used to declare fats bad were paid for by the food industry. There's never been a reliable study that shows a problem with fats. It's one of those things I use to determine if the info on a site is knowledgeable. If they are anti-fat, they are relying on old flawed research.

I'm going to a new primary care doctor. (My old one is the best. But I have to pay for out of network all the time). New doctor is a naturopath. I don't normally use them but I wanted a doctor that would understand the nutritional supplements I am taking. I can see them improve my O2 levels. My pulmonologist would just blow it off. (And I'm going to find a new pulmonologist too).

321 I think you can tell the focus of a country by looking at the largest buildings in town. They used to be factories. Sometimes, now, they are schools. Mostly, they are hospitals. We've managed to wipe out some of the most deadly diseases but need bigger and better medical facilities because we are so unhealthy.

322 166 Ask J.J. Sefton. Levin goes on a tangent about the (European) "de-growth" movement every now and then. This is the role model for the U.S. loons. They don't want ANY kind of energy, which means they accept pre-industrial age life.

They can have it.

No, the globalist elite have no intention of living like that. That's for us proles. We're supposed to be satisfied with tiny houses, vegetarianism, and public transportation, while the Al Gores and the Davos types enjoy their mansions, Kobe beef, and private jets.

Perhaps they really believe that Earth is running out of resources, so they have to convince the masses to tighten our belts so they can continue to live in luxury. Or maybe it's just a way of wielding power over us, for its own sake.

325 I would just like that people who say "Bzzzt. Wrong" when they''re trying to correct something you said sound ridiculous. Unless we've been in a pissing match (not literal, just figurative) just give me the information. Otherwise it sounds like I offended you simply for getting information correct. Because if I offended you simply because I got information wrong you have a low level of tolerance because I may frequently get something wrong. :^).

Thanks, ever so!

I'm reminded of a cartoon, it may have been in Penthouse in the early
80s, where a group of people are being interviewed by a news crew
outside an elevator with an 'out of order' sign taped on the front. "We
were trapped for nearly three hours and had to drink our own urine to
survive."

Probably already answered upthread, but that was Charles Rodrigues in the National Lampoon.
