First off, they don't provide all of it which I bitched about and they said 'tough'.
I thought they provided everything but what they do is provide sauces and additive stuff but you also have to buy meat and vegetables and stuff.
Is said, for this price, I've still got to buy more stuff? And they said 'yes'.
So I said 'eat ME' and demanded a refund. Sent back the food and got a partial refund (of course).
I would love to be able to buy a complete menu with everything included except maybe liquids.
So an MRE diet should be perfect.
I may try to see if something like that is available. Probably be cheaper than the diet people were. (I think it was like $300 dollars a month. Which is way more than I can afford for food now.)

The Harry Potter series is the worst written set of books from a plot perspective of all time.
I read those damn things because they are my daughter's favorite books. Months of wandering around the countryside, unable to figure out what to do, then they randomly run into someone and overhear the one piece of information they need to move the plot forward.
How freaking stuck do you have to be as an author to not be able to advance a plot when you are writing about magic, allowing you to literally create anything you need as a plot device out of thin air?

A lot of books are wasted on teenagers. I had to read The Great Gatsby and All The Kings Men in high school and found them a drudge. Especially when papers were involved. But a few years after college I ended up reading them again and found them much more interesting and meaningful.

years ago, when I survived my first disaster, I started assembling some supplies and was looking for MREs. the people that supply mres to the government said they were either not allowed or would not sell to civilians. some companies make mre type products but they are not military issue mres. so mres, meaning the miitary issue mres, are not available to the public.

So, I was washing my hands at the kitchen sink this evening when I
realized there was a tiny jet of water coming from the middle/bottom of
the faucet neck. Within a minute or so it had become *4* tiny jets of

(1) Depends on where you live. Some places in some states, the duct tape is the permanent repair.
(2) I'd look into just disassembling and cleaning what you have, possibly changing some o-rings.

Assuming that you have actually identified a replaceable part/gasket/o-ring as the culprit, then smear a *light* coat of grease on any rubber/plastic parts, reassemble. I guess I didn't explain well. It isn't likely to be an o-ring because the leak is in the metal tube part of the faucet. That's why it's strange. I've had rins and seals go bad before, but this is apparently the faucet itself wearing through and it's not *that* old (then again, I guess it could be 15 years and maybe that is old for modern faucets).

For any serious field, you don't pay to go to grad school. Any half-decent grad student should have tuition waived and either be on a stipend or working as a TA. The only people who have to pay for grad school are those in joke fields or people that the schools don't really want.

If you must use duct tape, I would get Gorilla Tape.
it's a very strong adhesive and more able to resist water than most other duct tapes.
Or 100 mph Rigger's tape sold under a bunch of different names.

You'd be surprised how much damage a little water can do and if you pay for your water that can get expensive (plus they charge for your sewer by how much water you use.)
I had a leaky water heater that I didn't know about until it leaked so bad that it put out the pilot light.
I 'used' 3,000 gals in one month. I was not happy about the bill I got.

realized there was a tiny jet of water coming from the middle/bottom of
the faucet neck. Within a minute or so it had become *4* tiny jets of
water. I'm guessing this means I have to replace the faucet, but can I
dry the area off and put duct tape around the faucet for a temporary

Take the aerator screen off the end of the faucet, and clean it. It may be partly clogged, causing back pressure that makes the spout leak elsewhere. If the aerator screen is clogged with lime, soak it in CLR or vinegar.

And you can find plenty of cheaper faucet sets than what you were quoted above.
of course they're not as well made but they'll probably do if you're hard up for cash.
I changed mine from a single valve to a two valve setup cause I like to adjust them separately. Cost for the setup was under $50 and it had a nice tall goose neck which the other faucet didn't and a sprayer attachment.
Make sure you lube the valves. the valves these days some of them are not the seating kind I don't know how to describe them but they don't use a seat they use a rotating hole in a plate that matches with another hole that has a rubber gasket. When the handle is turned the holes match and water flows. You have to lube that rubber gasket and the o'rings with o'ring grease.
Good luck have fun. try not to get too wet.

I've never seen any of the movies, but given how much of the book depends on narration, I can't imaginr any of them remotely doing justice to the novel. The same with the Great Gatbsy. The actual story isn't really anything special. It's the writing.

Had to Summer-read Moby Dick before 10th grade (scared new kid entering a small K-12 prep school). I don't think I made it through. So boring and heavy! (Oddly, I seem to recall being the only one in the class who appreciated some of the Biblical allusions. And I was sure not a Bible student. So I looked like I'd read it....)
Read it through, finally, decades later, and really enjoyed it. It wasn't as heavy, or boring.
But then, the last time I read it, a decade or so ago, I woke up the wife laughing out loud sometimes.

because the leak is in the metal tube part of the faucet. That's why
it's strange. I've had rins and seals go bad before, but this is
apparently the faucet itself wearing through and it's not *that* old
(then again, I guess it could be 15 years and maybe that is old for
modern faucets).

Here in Silicon Valley, we have liquid concrete for tapwater -- and it is not unusual to unscrew the bubbler screen and have a teaspoon of gravel fall out (the last drop of water when you shut off the faucet dries, leaving enough of a kernel of residue to be caught by the screen -- further dried drops build up an accretion of, essentially, stone). Since this can put full line water-pressure into parts of the faucet that really weren't designed for it, that may be a contributing factor. If you cleaned it out and the sprays stopped, you might be fine.

A 15 y/o faucet is from the "modern era" cheap plumbing fixtures. It's almost certainly made from some form of zinc-based pot metal. Even tubular items like faucets are formed from rolled metal, made into a tube and seam-welded by automation.
The rest of 'em are just cast-metal.
Now, where the problem lies, is the STEEL parts in the rest of the faucet system. Compression fitting nuts, and chrome plated supply valves under the sink.
Electrolysis occurs, and the least-noble metal, i.e; the pot-metal parts react, corrode and fail.
Just like her's has, right at the bend in the middle of the pipe. That's where the velocity and localized pressure (and erosion) is at the highest point in the system.
Polliwog can chase the repair cat around the tree, or just cut to the chase and install a newer system.
You can still buy good, chrome (or other finish), quality fixtures. Even then, most all the market is Made in China, save for the $400+ end of the menu.
Builders grade fixtures should be replaced, before their next failure results in large scale house flooding.

You can get cheaper faucet sets, but they don't expect them to last 20 years.
And if you need a temp fix, Gorilla Tape is as good as you'll find.
I learned about it when I bought an entire house worth of bamboo florring. Come loading time, it was pouring rain.
I ran back inside, bought a tarp & this Gorilla Tape stuff, and hoped for the best.
Taped the tarp down to the sides of the truck bed - in the middle of a monsoon - and drove home. Tarp stayed on at interstate speeds for 15-20 miles, and the next day, when I took it off, paint came with it.
Stuff is amazing.
I have 2 or 3 kitchen faucets out in the garage. If you lived nearby, you could take your pick...

The geniuses of the gooberment mandated a changeover to a new water disinfection agent a couple of years ago. The new stuff is considerably more aggressive about attacking plumbing, including metal parts.
Also, old lead plumbing which had formed largely stable passive complexes after many long years of exposure to the original disinfectant started dissolving again once the new stuff came into use.

There's an awful lot of Shakespeare that is quite enjoyable, but you have to "hear" it in your head to avoid having to (mis-)translate it -- e.g. the famous plaint: "O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefor art thou Romeo? / Deny thy father and refuse thy name; / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I'll no longer be a Capulet." If you read it on a page, you get all tangled up in trying to read it like modern English and you'll fall over "wherefor" like it something to do with location. If you "hear" it, you understand that she's tilting at windmills about names because they'd needn't face danger of maiming (see Heloise and Abelard) or death from their relatives if she were merely schtupping a random cowherd.

1984 and BNW - I don't think either is 'better' than the other. They both show worlds that arrived at the same conclusion from different angles: complete oppression and surveillance vs. blissful oblivion and apathy.

It's not the chemistry it's the annealing/hardness.
Over the years in an alkali environment has changed the metals into oxides and thus the annealing/hardness is way down.
that's where you get springiness.
Go to Ace and see if you can find a generic spring close to the right size or look up the fixture if there's parts or just spring (ha!) for a new soap dispenser.

Nope, not chemically. But you might be able to retemper it with the right degree of heat, just the right cooling medium (air, oil or water), and follow a rather rigorous time/temperature schedule, which is HIGHLY dependent upon the type and grade of steel from which the spring was formed.
In other words, mostly, NO.
But you can play sneaky, and wind/thread a similar, slightly smaller spring in there WITH the one that's sacked, and add it's strength to the old and the worn.
Would that such would be so simple as to rejuvenate me, being rather old and quite worn, indeed.
I could use some more spring in my step.

You're thinking Hetch-Hetchy water -- which was once rated as the best drinking water in the entire nation. Comes from a twin valley to Yosemite that got dammed before environmentalists got established in the state. That's further up the Peninsula. It's a little different down here. This stuff is so hard that a trickle of water will cement things together.

If the spring has lost tension from being etched by the soap, it's likely beyond repair, and would snap if you tried to stretch it. If the spring cleans up to shiny metal, you might be able to stretch it, and get some more life out of it, but it will fail after a shorter time than its initial life span.
If you have a good old-school hardware store in your town, like Ace hardware or Best Hardware, they may have an aisle simply loaded with assortments of small (and large) fasteners, springs, and other miscellaneous hardware. Take the old spring in, and see if you can match it up. Wire size and coil diameter being the big qualifiers.

Spendy but built like tanks. Restaurants run on thin margins, so a competent restauranteur won't buy expensive stuff which isn't damn-sure worth it. Restaurants are intolerant of downtime from failures, and the low-paid back-room wash staff aren't typically of delicate manner when it comes to handling equipment.

I'm a big fan of quarter-turn ball valves where they can't be seen -- and even in undersink and behind-the-toilet places where they can. But, I confess, I installed a single-knob with separate temperature-select valve when we rebuilt the master bath's shower 18 years ago.

Oh, if only you knew what I went through a month ago to replace a Standard spout/diverter valve. 'Standard', mind you, preceded American Standard.
The valve was so worn that only half of the water would go up the shower stem.
I never did find an exact replacement. All of the stuff now has plastic internals and thin metal. The original piece was heavy cast brass, chrome plated.
After a long search, I found a company in Chicago that had what seemed a decent piece in their catalog. I ordered that, and was prepared to receive something Made in China. To my surprise (and weirdly, to my satisfaction, it was made in Taiwan.
Proved to be quite a nice item, fully as heavy as the original, and had the same 'footprint'. I was pleased. But, it took a hell of a long time to find it.
Incidentally, I could have resurfaced the original valve, except that the original had been soldered together (rear plug) prior to plating, and there was no way to get it apart. I considered trying to steam heat it, but in the meanwhile (Mrs. H was becoming impatient) had ordered the other piece.

It's possible -- and even likely in hotels. The combined widgets have an internal setting for the maximum amount of hot water in the mix, to avoid scalding.

I have been to one that was awesom!. Sent by contractors of a sort I can't remember to get a concrete septic cover...in my minivan. The employees and a couple of customers were so polite in not laughing at me, but calmly explained how loading it would flatten my tires and brainstormed the best answer to the problem. Might be in some jurisdictions. If so, it's stupid. The thermostatic valves aren't instanteous in their action, and being built by humans, they are subject to failure. Not to mention costly to buy in the first place. A hot water tap, and a cold water tap, what can go wrong? If the supply water suddenly gets too hot or too cold, just crank down the tap in question, and instant relief. With the single-knob valves all being different, there is no standardized "right" way to correct for a sudden temperature change. Now, maybe they are thermostatically-controlled to limit over-hotness, but they can't do anything if the hot supply suddenly goes cold, and the cold supply is only a few degrees above the freezing point.

Not that I think it should be mandated by law or anything, but handles are way better than knobs. When I re-keyed my new house I replaced all of the knobs with handles. You can get some pretty oiled brass ones that fit the decor even if you have an older house. If you're trying to come in with a bag of groceries in each hand or getting to the basement with a full laundry basket, handles beat knobs every time.

This! The hot water tap in my shower was leaking. I figured that it was probably just a washer or something, so I looked up on YouTube how to take it apart.
That went well, but the valve assembly was probably about 30 years old and corroded. I stripped the head of the screw trying to remove it to replace the washer.
I took the assembly to a plumbing supply store, and the guy came up with an exact replacement. It wasn't very expensive, so I got the cold water and the diverter assemblies and replaced them all. I should be good for another 30 years or so.

Have them both in my house, but converted the first floor to all handles, mostly because of the basement stairs door.
Many is the time where I am carrying something heavy/huge and don't want to put it down to open the door knob to the basement, either to get in, or worse to get out.
The handle offers easy one-finger opening. But to do that one door required all the first floor knobs to be converted.

I don't disagree with you on any of your points, just saying that if you're providing services to the public and you build a new structure for that purpose, I don't disagree with a requirement that it be accessible. I don't disagree with a requirement that the electrical system be inspected and up to code and the plumbing not shit waste all over the floor either. These are all kind of equivalent to me.

I wouldn't be thinking "cut"; I'd be thinking "grind". Make a cylinder of plastic that barely fits down the hole, let's say it's 3/4". Then find a dremel fine grinding wheel that will grind on its face that's smaller -- say 1/2". Drill a guide for the dremel in your cylinder that's 1/8" off center. Now you've got a jig to do light grinding on a seat that'll always be 1/16" from your cylinder walls. Stuff it down, pull it up a bit, spin up the Dremel, touch down, do a couple of light loops, pull up, kill Dremel, and take a look.

A hot water flush seems almost pointless. Water in the bowl is cold
because its been sitting there. Water in the tank is cold because its
been sitting there. Water in the pipes probably cold too. So you flush

They had that in the wellsite trailer that I used for several years. Those trailers are bad for long waits for warm water. Also, a lot of water is wasted, which comes from a supply tank in the trailer, which costs $$$ to fill. They used a little Grundfos pump, commonly used as a circulating pump in hot-water heating systems. It worked great. And in a cold climate, the heat "lost" from the system goes to heat the interior of the trailer, so it's not actually wasted.

If I were doing this, I'd probably use a Craftsman spiral saw widget, 'cause I've seen it most recently. It really doesn't matter much -- you want anything with a collet. Harbor Freight has one for $10.
The thing about creating tooling from plastic is because the original boundary conditions were that he had four of them to do. Plastic's probably good for six-ten, max.

He was impressed. We began to wonder why thieves don't make use of stuff like that. Well, a compressor with enough flow to run one is a bulky and noisy thing. How about battery powered electric tools?

One thing to note is that compressors are only noisy when they're running.....not when they have pressure. If you could have cut that shackle before your tank ran out, it'd be much quieter.

A little $40 Dremel with a cutoff wheel will go through a shackle. Best with the fiber reinforced wheels. I haven't run one off an inverter on a DC battery pack, but I don't see any reason why it would not work. Takes a little while. Slow but sure.
However, I have seen a pair of long-throw bolt cutters bite a shackle open in one nip. That's hardened, professional grade, badass shackle. Takes some upper body muscle, but that plus Archimedes gets the job done pronto.

I worked in high school at a plumbing supply business. We loved the plumbers because they called ahead with a list, knew what they wanted, and we'd have it ready to go when they got there. Retail customers, on the other hand . . . invariably, you would have a woman walking in with a faucet she had pulled out of her sink, hardware dangling, at 10 minutes until closing time needing a washer and having no idea what to do.

Now, I discovered that a portable air tank is more than enough to run an impact wrench to take a the lug nuts off a flat tire out in the field. Usually. If one is stuck, and you let it hammer, you'll run it down quickly. In that case, it's time for for the pull handle and cheater bar and muscle power to break it loose.
I've never got into the "big" battery powered stuff, drills and drivers. I always figured the energy requirements were such that you'd need a hell of a battery energy density. Maybe they've achieved that.
But I like to see how long one of those 18v 4" grinders would last with me for a typical grinding job.

Around here, they used to fill old underground tanks with a slurry instead of removing them.
If permissible, that may save you some money, so ask about it.
And ask about converting your boiler over to natural gas. That could save mucho dinero over time, considering the fluctuations in fuel oil costs. Not to mention the convenience.

I thought Branagh's St. Crispin's speech was perfectly done -- it's not presented from a stage; it's not formally orated; it's nearly conversational, though clearly meant to be heard far and wide -- and spoken when the result of the battle was clearly in doubt. It doesn't say, "we'll hold our lily-white skins as evidence we stayed safe" -- it digs into "Then he will strip his sleeve and show his scars, / And say, 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'"

Ian McKellan is a great actor. I just don't want to see anything he's in anymore (although I watched him in "The Hobbit" the others night) because of his stupidly saying that if he goes into hotel rooms he rips out pages related to homosexuality being a sin. I'm not too fond of people who destroy books because something offends them, thus ruining the Bible for other people. He also just said "I would like to see the Oscars nominate an openly gay man.'. Remember that oil floats on water -- so if you pump a water-based concrete-like goop into the tank, it should stop leaking oil.
And, of course, if someone is saying to do something right now, right away, in the next 10 minutes -- they're normally trying to squeeze you into doing something against your interests.

If the tanks are "registered" you're good to forget about them. All the local oil companies had to stop filling up underground tanks that weren't in the system or something. Again, I forget the details. But I know a few people who just continued to use them, filling them themselves, via 55-gallon drums and such.
Of course, this is out in the country. This day I time, I would trust no one.

I'm honestly a bit surprised by how few seem to have read any russian
lit. Dostoyevsky and Solzhenitsyn were both assigned reading for me in
high school and were actually some of the most memorable authors. I
thought Solzhenitsyn was especially compelling. Reading about a real
life dystopia rather than the glut of imaginary sci-fi ones (all of
which inevitably came with lots of opinions from leftist teachers and
students about how we were heading in such a direction) was refreshing.

I never read any of the Russian 'classic' writers. Now, to me, Solzhenitsyn is completely different. I've read Gulag through VI and remember eagerly awaiting -- and buying -- each one as it came out. I also went back and read his other works, 'Cancer Ward' being a favorite, though I'm still amazed he got 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' published with Party approval under Khrushchev. What he had to go through to get his works into print is stunning. Solzhenitsyn is truly one of the great writers of the 20th Century. It is easy to understand why our socialist teachers see no need to have their charges suffer reading him.

Find out what the laws are where you are. You might be able to get someone to put you in a new aboveground tank if you got room for it.
Hell, back in the 90s, my father and I did that for a great-uncle of mine who lived in town. His underground oil tank was leaking. We found a 500 gal tank somewhere, used but in good shape, which the owner just gave away to get rid of it, and we set it up in his backyard, ran new lines and all that. Then the next year, he replaced the furnace with a gas one.
Made me mad, doing all that work for him for nothing and he didn't use it for any time.
Now, how many local regs were broken in that process, I don't know. But the oil company filled it up. It was his tank, above ground, and they had no liability, IIRC.

Yep 'Cancer Ward' is an under-appreciated Solzhenitsyn work that ought be to be read more widely. And 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' is actually a quick and fairly easy read. I read it all in one evening in college and then walked a mile to a local KFC at midnight because the book made me so damn hungry.

You know how many old oil tanks I picked up for free when people converted to gas? Usually full of #2, which was about $3 at the time.
Years ago, I had an old diesel F250 with dual tanks. Rear tank was dedicated for old crappy #2 with the occasional dirty motor oil mixed in. I bet I went over a year without ever stopping g at the gas station.

If they stopped diesel passenger vehicles and pickups, I don't know. But anyway, the fuel color Gestapo were on the prowl.
They stopped us once. The truck was gas, of course. He said it sounded like a diesel to him. (It didn't).
Anyway, the fines for that were astronomical. They had figured, and they were right, that a lot of people were sneaking off-road diesel and other #2 in their on-road trucks.

I almost never answer the landline, a behavior which dates back to when we had kids living at home (who am I, your answering service?). The telephone is more an instrument of harassment than a communications medium these days with the putative "do not call" lists getting little more than lip service.

When I had that truck, I was a member of an "oilburners" forum that was exclusive to diesel guys (and gals). A lot of us International Morons.*
Apparently it's a big thing out in horse country to pull over anyone pulling a trailer, and they have test strips now. Dip in a long piece of paper, instant reading. Seizure of truck on the spot.
Fines were enough to shut down a small family farm. If not, the lawyer fees would. Ridiculous is the best word I can come up with, but doesn't cut it.
*I was a proud member of a club named BOOBs Brotherhood Of Oil Burners. Still have the t-shirts.

A premium phone service. A home phone ain't cheap, and I have just the basic local service and use calling cards for the occasional long distance call. The reasons I have Verizon are I get internet through the phone company and I do not own one of those new-fangled cell phone thingies (proud member of Luddite Local # 832).

Every other book on this list that I read, and I believe there are 4, was assigned. Here's my synopsis.
Great Gatsby: piece of excrement. An existential fiasco.
Catcher in the Rye: piece of excrement. An existential fiasco.
Tale of Two Cities: thought it was a piece of excrement but, in hindsight, it's only mostly a piece of excrement - and I generally like Dickens.
1984 - powerful book that nobody understands, including those who think they do like me.
The best book I've ever read, as literature, is The Stand, by King. He might be a dick, but he can write.
Best history is spread over a few authors. Ambrose is still missed. Hastings is extraordinary. Friedman's economic history is astounding, as is just about anything he ever wrote. Shelby Foote's Civil War trilogy is a must read. Grant's autobiography is a classic.
If you want esoterica, read Admiral's Charles Lockwood (submarines), or Daniel V. Gallery (captured a U-Boat). Much less-known, but tremendous.
Lots of "good reads" out there - just avoid the liberal bullshit and you'll be OK. Most "literature" is liberal bullshit, with the possible exception of Hemingway - who takes himself a wee bit too seriously.
T. Roosevelt's autobiographical stuff is pretty solid, now that I think of it.
I own thousands of books, so I'm sure I've liked more than a few...
