Evening Open Thread: Things Which Are Awful Edition

Pretty much that just means "here's the usual."

Things that are awful: Hillary Clinton, and establishment White Woman feminists' insistence that you only don't like her because she's a woman, rather than because she's awful.

Wendy Davis says you can't give Sanders credit as a revolutionary, and deny that credit to Hillary, because Hillary can't call for revolution. Men just can't get behind a woman calling for revolution.

marianne.jpg

Mm-hm.

Jonathan Haidt says political correctness is awful and people are becoming "horrified" at what's going on on campuses.

John Hawkins says that Marco Rubio's betrayal of his promises to the Tea Party, and his terrible flacking for the Gang of Eight sell-out, is awful, and you should stop trying to force yourself to forget that.

And short posts are awful, but I gotta rest my eyes.

1 Too easy...

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo...Anti-Semite at February 04, 2016 08:09 PM (Zu3d9)

2 Good News Regarding the Presidential Election Thus Far:

1. Jeb Bush, the anointed Republican nominee, was laughed out of the race and then curb-stomped into toothless irrelevance by media and voters both right and left, dashing the dreams of the Establishment.

2. Ted Cruz is not only still in the running, he's moved to the front of the pack and now has a good chance at winning.

3. Hillary has become so morally damaged that even if she wins the nomination she will limp into the general election permanently hobbled by the highest negatives and the general disapproval of almost everyone except hardcore Democrat diehards.

4. Sanders has made no attempt to hide his communist past, so that he will be easy pickin's to destroy if he wins the nomination.

Bad News Regarding the Presidential Election Thus Far:

1. Trump is such a loose cannon that if he wins the nomination, it's possible he could implode in a blinding fireball of self-imposed gaffetastic oafishness, and in the process hand the election to the Dem candidate, however damaged and/or "unelectable" they may be.

2. Sanders is, incredibly, still a viable candidate, with the highest "enthusiasm rating."

3. The GOP field is an embarrassing circular firing squad. By the time nomination day rolls around, there may be no one left standing.

4. Leftists still dominate the media and "the national zeitgeist," so we'll have to spend the next 10 months arguing about Stupid Shit.

All in all, "good" and "bad" are about tied.

Is it time to go gutter? OK, I'm totally going gutter.

There's a controversy over whether this guy's dick is real or prosthetic. It's in a music video. Scroll all the way to like the 3:00 mark because for the rest of the time he's just standing in front of the water and seen from the waist up.

Then the camera pans. And keeps panning. And it defies expectations.

So this is all the NSFW.

The link is in Krautish but the video is just a video so you can figure it out.

24 "John Hawkins says that Marco Rubio's betrayal of his promises to the Tea
Party, and his terrible flacking for the Gang of Eight sell-out, is awful, and you should stop trying to force yourself to forget that."

And now is the time on the program where I kick myself repeatedly for not having been the first to perceive and comment upon something that in retrospect ought to be incredibly obvious, to which another member of the Horde beat me, making me feel like a big dummy.

To wit, that Marco Rubio is the John Edwards of the Republican Party.

28 I was just reading. Sweden is falling apart. The damn government is against the people in favor of the rapefugees. I just read a translation of an interview with some official of the Swedish Justice Dept.

She adamantly maintained the "right of asylum" in Sweden. When asked if asylum meant the destruction of Sweden by the imposition of Sharia by the refugees, would that be enough to deny asylum. That minister said, "the right of asylum is very strong". And added she was only telling what the rules were. She had no opinion on anything else.

For the past 10 years or so, EWF used to tour with Chicago and at the end of the show, they would join each other onstage and do a super jam of all their tunes.

Bertram, thanks for the Medved Update. He really has passed into unserious territory. Somewhat puzzling, why mass illegal migration, with all its pernicious consequences, is an IQ test that so many otherwise non-cretinous people consistently fail.

And it is an IQ test, policy-wise. Anything remotely resembling amnesty - no, anything NOT constituting a straightforward return to normal rule of law in this area - is simply idiotic.

Sure, the infantile moral narcissism of amnesty types is pathetic and repulsive, and is the sort of thing that has given us the catastrophic "War on Poverty" and other policy calamities. But it's the stupidity, the unworkability, of the idea that stands out (even assuming, absurdly, that the Rube Goldberg design would actually be enforced, unlike all current law).

There isn't the slightest question that anything other than return to rule of law will guarantee - guarantee - massive, probably indefinite, continuation of mass illegal migration. There will be no credible path of return to normal, lawful, intelligent practices, as the illegals are rational actors, and after observing/experiencing the last 30 years' debate, will rightly conclude that de facto open borders are permanent.

My childhood friend Eddie was on the chain gang. I used to visit him sometimes. They ate the same food as what we simple farm folk (black and white both) were accustomed to in and out of jail. He was a camp cook and had to cut a guy to establish his bonafides. And this was after he shot and killed 2 other guys, which first got him prison and then the gang. My blood kin that went to prison or the gang was just run-of-the-mill moonshiners. Not a killer in the whole bunch. Unless you count WW II.

Then the camera pans. And keeps panning. And it defies expectations.

So this is all the NSFW.

202 I recently heard an interview Signe Toly Anderson gave back about ten years ago to a radio station in Portland, where she lived. In it, she described very vividly how Jefferson Airplane formed back in '65.

She was a young folk singer in Portland in '64 but couldn't find many gigs there so moved down to San Francisco where all the action was. She still couldn't find any paying gigs, so she was at an open mike night in early '65 at a folkie club in the Marina District where she knew the bartender. After her set, she went back to the bar and her friend pointed to some long-haired dude standing off to the side and said, "That guy liked your singing and wants to meet you."

So she went over to shake the guy's hand and he said, "Hi, my name is Paul. Me and a buddy want to start a band but neither of us can really sing, so we were looking for a lead singer. Wanna be our frontwoman?"

So of course she said yes, and they soon after got a gig promoting the opening of a new coffee shop/nightclub. The band didn't even have a name -- the flyer just said "Come to the grand opening of [coffee shop] -- with LIVE MUSIC!"

She said the people at the opening cared more about the band than the did about the dumb cafe, and due to popular demand they kept playing there night after night.

Eventually people kept asking what the name of the band was (they still didn't have one), so after one show they all sat around brainstorming for a name. One of the band members (I forget who) had a cat named Jefferson, so he blurted out, randomly, "Jefferson!" Moments later, Kantner, also blurted out a random name suggestion, "Airplane!"

Everyone looking at each other and laughed -- and they agreed that the randomly assembled (and meaningless) name "jefferson Airplane was to be their new name.

Within weeks they got a record contact, released their first album, went on national tour, and became quite famous.

But then Anderson became pregnant in '66 and after almost two years with the band decided it wouldn't be healthy to raise a baby on tour. So she decided to bow out and quit the band, and devote time to her family instead.

There was a rival band in SF at the time called The Great Society, who had two local hits called "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit, written by their lead singer Grace Slick and her husband Darby Slick. After Signe announced she planned to quit, the Airplane poached grace Slick from the less-successful Great Society, and she not only abruptly switched bands, but she brought her to minor hits songs with her, infuriating her original band!

Nothing they could do -- she had co-written them, so they were her songs.

Now with Grace on lead vocals, they re-recorded both songs and put them on the second album, and the rest is history. Both became top ten national hits and instant classics, and based on them JA was invited to headline Monterey Pop.

The rest of the story is well-known.

The 1905 bayonet for the 1903 Springfield was 16" long. Why? Because the 1903 was shorter than the competing Euro rifles and they didn't want to be outstabbed.

Pearl necklace? I envision a few dozen rats and the term "bukakke."

430 Again, what f#$king record?

Posted by: AD at February 04, 2016 09:45 PM (QWY55)

431 Pitiable, really. He's trapped in that he has a profound need to be seen as an equal within his own family and can't figure out a way to bow out gracefully now. So its going to be hella damaging to him as he gets ground down to nothing.

Yep. What are Jeb! option. Dad, brother have been President, you've done a good job as Governor. Where do you go? Gather a band of wild geese and take over Venezuela, colonize Mars, what's available to scale?

Posted by: Jean at February 04, 2016 09:46 PM (cXiMR)

432 yeah, but what does that have to do with the '08 collapse? Hillary used her "opposition to carried interest" as proof that she was ahead of the financial collapse and could have stopped it.

Oh. I missed that. Fixing dinner.

She's an economically illiterate demagogue who will say anything for power?

433 Debate thread up.

434 Hillary whines because Johnson Controls moves offshore to save $500 million in taxes.

435 Booze has less calories... decisions decisions. probably both, just to be safe. What's an extra 5 pounds of fat?
Posted by: HR Puff and Get Stuffed at February 04, 2016 09:24 PM (qul7b)

Lessee . . . fat has 9 kcal/gm; alcohol 7 kcal/gm; 1 pound = 453.59 gm.

Now, I been drinkin', but that comes out that 5 pounds of fat is 583 grams of pure, 200-proof alcohol.

At .789 gm/cm3, that's 739 cc of alcohol.

Let's call it 24 ounces of pure grain alcohol.

That should make you happy. Or dead. Depends on your tolerance.

No guarantees on the math-ing, 'cause of the booze.

438 These two fascists would make it easier if they'd just list those whom they don't want to "go after" and tax the shit out of.

I own the Trinity of Firearms.

The M1 Garand, the M14, and the 1911.

Nothing else is required for small arms.

Men just can't get behind a woman calling for revolution.

Well, it helps if her boobs are out, she has a nice ass, and is hot.

All of which does not describe the Hilldabeast. So far as I know.
