Cruz Wins: Fox Confirms the Decision Desk's Call
Could Rubio Overtake Trump for 2nd Place?

Trump to speak in 5 minutes.

With a lot of the vote now in, it's Trump 24%, Rubio 23%.

The Decision Desk has the first call -- they call the GOP side for Ted Cruz.

Of course, there are still a lot of votes to be counted. Update: Fox News confirms the Decision Desk's call.

Projected turnout on the GOP side is 170,000+ -- which would smash all previous Iowa caucus records (on the GOP side -- in 2008, Obama's big year, the Dems got 220,000).

This is pretty funny:

Update: Iowa winnows the field -- Martin O'Malley to suspend his campaign.

Rubio is more of a Sandra Fluke sort of girl, but with a Spanish twist.

I can't see the other Establishment candidates--Kasich, Christie, Bush--dropping out until their last dollar is spent, and that could take awhile. Besides, given Jeb'ssense of betrayal, his campaign's sole purpose right now is to destroy Rubio. Imagine Jeb! as a pudgy Ahab: 'From hell's heart, I stab at thee!'

466 Have gone back and forth a bit between Trump and Cruz the last month but admit I was strongly pulling for Trump tonight. Have to give a huge congratulations to Ted Cruz who took a very unfavorable news cycle and media bias in stride to effectively deploy his outstanding organization.

Great victory for Ted and his supporters here, congratulations.

Now to our friends in Iowa - what in the world were you thinking with Rubio? He's a good looking young guy, he's well spoken...I get it. But you do not. You have resurrected the establishment beast and we are all going to pay for it.

The establishment Pols are doing a victory dance like you can't believe tonight, the chamber of commerce checks are being written as we speak. They were worried, they thought this time they might actually be held accountable. Now they know they won't be. Again - huge respect to Cruz but the establishment knows they can beat him now. He has very little chance in New Hampshire (not his fault, just very unfavorable demographics) and the entire political apparatus in SC is in the tank like you can't believe for Rubio.

Great win for Ted and good luck to him in the weeks ahead but I fear we are witnessing how Rubio becomes our nominee.

I think NH will be written off as Bernie's home turf. If she gets within 10 points she will claim victory.

She is absolutely crushing him in SC polling right now, particularly with black voters who comprise a very large percentage of the Democratic vote. If she rolls him in SC she will likely carry that over into Super Tuesday a few days later where there are also a number of southern states that almost certainly are reflecting the same numbers. If that happens then it's all over.

It's a legitimate story. Cruz doing well in a socon state after going aggressively socon at the wire, expected. Surprised some, moi included, because of his recent fade in the polls, but apparently his organization pulled it out.

Trump in second in his weakest state -- not as good as a win -- which would have crippled Cruz, but take it and win big in NH next week.

Rubio in third almost second -- dangerously close to being a real "not Trump/Cruz" threat and could mean a long primary.

gracious even in victory I see.

Cruz only had to read a place like this blog or National Review to see going against ethanol is a winner, and (falsely) portrays that "conservative integrity" without really costing him votes. Ethanol is not a top priority even for farmers.

The spin that it makes him brave and principled is goofy, especially in other states, but still true in Iowa. Iowa fit Cruz's Jesus rap, which he seemed to have overdone. And "New York Values" probably scored bigger in Iowa than it will from here on.

But good to know Cruz will end all government support systems, as promised. No more picking winners in tax code or anything else, including big oil. Obama promised no lobbyists in his administration as well. Yet Ted was for 5x the H-1Bs, and I'm sure that was Zuckerberg approved.

Where will Carsons votes go? He's another "outsider" candidate, so honestly I don't think his supporters will go where he tells them, if he even does endorse.

30% to Cruz.
30% to Rubio
40% to Trump.

Seems reasonable, and seems like it wouldn't make any difference to the outcome, for the most part.
Unless, that 40% goes to Rubio at Trumps' expense.
Then it gets interesting.

At any rate, Rubio's third place will be spun as a big success, because he did beat the latest polling numbers.

719 hahaha Hillary can't even beat a dirty old communist.

They did everything to force her to win. She had no serious competition when this started and at one point she had a 50 point lead in Iowa. 50. And they did a total of 3 debates on weekends up against major sporting events.

We should be able to run Jim Gilmore or maybe Other and still kick her fat ass. Sadly, we probably won't.

720 Carson and Paul voters will go to Cruz. All the rest go to Rubio\GOPe. Trump maintains his base of ~25-30%.

But I would like to thank Donald Trump for prepping the battlefield for Ted Cruz. Nice work Donald, here's a lovely set of steak knives.

Posted by: CozMark at February 01, 2016 11:01 PM (CbGSW)

721 If Cruz and Trump are smart they will lay off each other for a bit. They nearly allowed Rubio to go hey diddle diddle right up the middle, shades of McCain in 08. Cruz has very little shot in NH and is actually well served by a Trump victory there. He should set up camp in SC and may the best man win. It won't be easy to beat Rubio there as he will have the entire GOP apparatus and Governor behind him. Best hope is that Bush stays in to split that vote but pressure will be intense on Bush to drop out in favor of Rubio after NH.

This was not the result we Trump Supporters had hoped for.
But keep in mind several things.

First, it appears that Trump made a strategic error in opting out of the last debate. It wasn't clear at the time (at least not to me) that this was a bad move. Now it is.

Second, Trump came in a respectable (not distant) second in Iowa WITHOUT implementing the tried, true, and traditional highly organized "Ground Game" approach that tends to prove so invaluable in that particular caucus State. Trump's solid placing was born of pure enthusiasm.

Third - and Nasty Trump Haters, y'all take special note here - Donald Trump showed nothing but graciousness despite failing to take first place. He was gracious to the folks of Iowa. And he was gracious and congratulatory to "Ted".
Point being: The Don is not as tactless as many like like to fantasize.

Fourth, Trump didn't pretend like this was not a disappointment. He knows he can't win by not facing facts or by putting on a phony face. He's a realist who looks at the situation and makes course corrections.

Unfortunately, Trump won't be running the tables. But I'd handicap it as Trump still being at at-least 50% to win the nomination.

Now on to New Hampshire.

Right. Rush has been saying, for 20+ years now, that you need to not accept the media premise, smile, not apologize, and be confident and unapologetic in your beliefs.
