Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | 4th Quarter Growth Rate Falls to 0.7 PercentMust have been the unexpectedly mild early winter. The U.S. economy's growth slowed sharply in the final three months of 2015 to a 0.7 percent annual rate. Consumers slowed spending, businesses cut back on investment and global problems trimmed exports. The slowdown could renew doubts about the durability of the 6˝-year-old economic expansion, though most economists expect growth to rebound in the current January-March quarter. Obviously the question is whether this is the crash landing signalling a new recession (which itself would be confirmation that we've just been scootching along in a Depression) or if we return to the anemic less-than-inflation-plus-population-growth we've so long enjoyed under Obama. Under Obama the Feds have been increasingluy falsifying the unemployment stats, progressively excluded anyone who has "stopped looking for work" or never looked for work or who is so "under-employed" as to not really count as having a job. In reality, the US has a 42% unemployment rate, which is the worst in history (the worst rate during the Great Depression in the '30s was 25%), and indicates that we are indeed in a terrible depression, which no one will acknowledge. As Great Depression 2.0 winds its way through Obama's presidency, realize that every "stimulant" the fed, prez has at their disposal has been used. And abused.
Using Quantative Easing to inflate stock market (translation: print money to buy stocks for rich people). done. GDP is measured in $$$$?
Lower gas prices mean less dollars spent. Just something to consider. Especially in winter, what is considered the "non-driving" season. I think demand for fuel is pretty inelastic, in that people need to get where they need to get, but don't just drive for the hell of it. Ace, you have a point on the seasonal adjustments. Logic dictates that if half of the winters are worse than normal, than half are better than normal. If we adjust growth rates upward to correct for a bad winter, do we ever adjust growth rates downward to adjust for a mild winter? I think we all know the answer.

You are comparing the marginal increase in the money supply (printing money) with the increase in a yearly calculation of the total value of goods and services produced by the country. recession is two quarters of negative growth so we don't have one yet. Depression is vague but worse, generally a 10% decline in GDP. Using those terms loosely may get one labeled a financial illiterate by MSM types, and we wouldn't want that. lol
But the financial shenanigans have been extreme, and put us in uncharted territory. As with Obamacare, they are running up a tab and trying to delay a collapse till post Hillary selection/election. We have taken a big turn (after decades of veering left) toward socialism by using so much government power to control so much of spending. We run up debt in making promises for retirement and yet want to bring in another 50 million illegals (over a few years, chain migration) which are at the low economic end (or criminal), and not all young. Yet Cruz recently wanted 5X the H-1b replacement workers, and stated a year ago "there is no bigger friend to legal immigration than me". We can't do that ... we have to retrench and make "hard choices" or surrender the country to a socialist hell. The US has better credit, but ALL that good will and credit is being used, and a third mortgage is being taken out on traditional American savers and their children. Trump is the anti-DCist. "Inflation is at least 2% per year, usually more."
"Inflation" is really about money supply, which we have had a lot of, but it has not stimulated as planned because stimulus is supposed to be used only judiciously to help accommodate organic growth. Throwing money from helicopters really doesn't work, as we are seeing. Those helicopters have hovered over Democrat interests, foreign interests, America being the fatted calf, getting weak. Most people look at price inflation, which can be kept low with a weak economy and foreign slave labor, and h-1B slave labor. But we are growing a welfare class, as we borrow and fabricate trillions out of thin air, rather than stimulating the private sector of America, first. The world needs us more than we need them, but our DC elite and corporate elite see better profit margins by using the slaves, and we are lied to about why that is so good. Democrat elites have their own hate for America, but their union workers don't like the outsourcing. Posted by: Illiniwek at January 29, 2016 01:35 PM (5Gpe2) 277

Posted by: Hank at January 29, 2016 01:37 PM (BtG7l) Pardon first, then charges Posted by: Obamao at January 29, 2016 01:39 PM (T78UI) In theory, a grand jury can do whatever it wants to do. In practice, everything referred to a federal grand jury is fed to them by the local US Attorney's office (DOJ). The FBI does not even have authority to issue a subpoena without a warrant, which takes a grand jury (or judge in exigent circumstances), which means the DOJ is the gatekeeper even for issuance of subpoenas. Federal grand juries normally meet once a week, and overwhelmingly their docket consists of rubber stamping drug cases (subpoenas and indictments) that are presented by the US Attorney's office. If we had a real press corps in America, instead of
having a press corpse that is nothing more than an auxiliary wing of the Democratic Party, clips like this would run right next to a clip of Bubba addressing the Democratic convention in 2012. The clip in which Bubba urged America to stay the course with Obama, and said that a return to bursting 1990s levels of economic prosperity was just around the corner thanks to Obamanomics kicking in, and that Americans would very shortly "feel it", in his words, as they became more prosperous. Posted by: torquewrench at January 29, 2016 01:39 PM (noWW6) Why wait for the useless press to do something we can do ourselves? C + I + G + (X-M) = GDP = C + S + T
GDP is not the measure of monetary flow (like a cash flow statement), it is the measure of everything produced (like an income statement). The above equation states that Consumption plus Investment plus Government Spending plus Net Exports equals Consumption plus Savings plus Taxes. Money loaned by the Fed to the banks is not in there anywhere. Money loaned by banks to borrowers is not in there anywhere. When the borrowers spend it on consumption, investment, providing government services, or imports, then it is counted in GDP. "Some big cities are also providing free dinners at school, and sending
food home w/kids for the weekend. It's sick, this mentality of total dependence on the state to feed your freakin' kid." There was a wire service photo of a visibly uncomfortable Chelsea Clinton helping to assemble baloney sandwiches in an inner-city school cafeteria for MLK Day. Probably the first time in her life that the Crown Princess has even so much as come in contact with cheap processed meat. Disorienting for her. Someone said, wait, what? It's a federal holiday. Why is the school open? Why are they serving meals? Why aren't these kids eating at home? Well, they're open to feed the kids even when school isn't in session, because if the schools didn't do this, the kids would "go hungry". This despite absolutely record levels of expenditure on EBT, SNAP, WIC, and the rest of the nutritional-assistance alphabet soup programs which give fat benefits to those kids' parents with the intention that the parents will, y'know, _feed the damn kids_ with the proceeds. No one on the Republican side says anything about this. Not even the vaunted Trump. The "you hate the poor and you want them to starve" trope is just too terrifying to come near. I doubt there are many Christian voters who think Trump could recite the Nicene Creed, or even identify it. Evangelicals have given up trying to elect one of their own. What they're looking for is a bodyguard, someone to shield them from mounting (and real) threats to their freedom of speech and worship. Trump fits that role nicely, better in fact than many church-going Republicans. For eight years, there was a born-again in the White House. How'd that work out for Christians, here and in Iraq? I want to believe this means that it will include public corruption charges. I've ranted that if it's only over e-mails, Hillary will spin it as a technical violation by her underlings. An FBI criminal referral will likely get leaked. It should drive Hillary from the race, no matter what the DOJ does. That's because Hillary is a weak candidate, who's getting weaker by the day. that CNN link on the 42% say it is the broad number counting all adults not working. They say U6 is better, counting those working part time but wanting full time and that number is 10.3%
But there are also underemployed that have a degree, get pushed out by H-1Bs and outsourcing, and now work making burgers. Or there are all those that have given up on looking for work, so they are not counted, though fully able. Obama commented on the Oscar race stupidity. Obama expressed his concern that the all-white list of nominees reflects "an expression of this broader issue" of inequality in the United States, according to ABC News.
He said that inclusion "makes for better entertainment; it makes everybody feel part of one American family, so I think as a whole the industry should do what every other industry should do, which is to look for talent, provide opportunity to everybody." I guess someone needs to explain to him that dollars drive the entertainment industry just like in professional sports such as the NBA. Posted by: chique testing testing at January 29, 2016 02:05 PM (uz/Pv) Yes, Obama had a press conference at the WH at noon to describe the Labor Dept. new rules. First speaker up was Lilly Ledbetter, who had legislation passed with her name on it that removes the statute of limitations on suing a former or current employer for pay discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender Identity and all kinds of crap. So 40 years ago, I believe Ledbetter wasn't being paid as much as her counterparts. She's still pissed about it. And she is crying about all the things she could have bought for her family if she had been paid the same as men. She's still whining about this even though this legislation was passed seven years ago. She has embraced the permanent victim status and she's a useful idiot for the Obama adminstration. So let's pretend kids... All the companies that make X widget pay all their employees at said level the exact same amount, regardless of experience, performance, etc. They also make sure they are paying the exact same thing that other companies pay, to try to escape lawsuits. However, now the gov. will charge them with collusion to keep pay at a certain level in an industry. This is what happens, kids, when you have a command and control economy, dictated by socialists. Speaking of dead pools, it should be possible to have a scoring system that tracks not just who dies, but how old/sick they were before croaking, and factoring in celebrity status.
In other words, Abe Vigoda, while it's been a fun ride, has not really had much celebrity recently, and was very very old. One would score him much lower than, for example, an Amy Winehouse. But Amy would score lower than, for example, Heath Ledger, because she was a KNOWN druggie, if not a more serious user. Lower still would be Steve Irwin because, while it is a bad idea to jump into all those situations he did with deadly creatures, and one might have been wise to have him in one's pool... still, a stingray? That's just way cool. I'm sure we've had higher scoring deaths than him recently, but he's got to be fairly high on the list. Posted by: BurtTC at January 29, 2016 02:18 PM (TOk1P) 491

I agree that Cruz is a better bullet to the GOPe heart, but where is he going to win? Unless the GOTV in Iowa fails miserably, Trump looks like a winner there (Ann Selzer poll coming tomorrow, so buckle up) and he has a big lead in NH. He leads pretty much everywhere at this point, even building a big lead in Florida. Where is the Cruz oxygen, if not Iowa?
I predict that, if Cruz wins in Iowa, he gets aggressive and spends big against Trump. Lord knows, there is plenty to say in negative ads. But if he loses, Cruz pulls back and acknowledges reality. Reality is: you don't want to hurt the nominee, and Trump (if he wins in Iowa) is the nominee. Posted by: MTF at January 29, 2016 02:19 PM (TxJGV) 495

I see more and more Spanish-speaking, illegal-looking families. Large families, unlike most of ours. And more and more Muslims--- women with rags on their heads, men with weird-beards, men in man-dresses wearing those little white cylindrical hats like Speedy the Alka-Seltzer mascot.
Saw a couple of man-dress/alka-seltzer hat characters down in a city park -- amongst the other kiosks and street musicians. The had a great big sign about calling people to join Islam. They looked so arrogant, and so sleazy, and smirked like they know something I don't. I see rag head women running cash registers. I bought beer at a drugstore and the rag head called up a manager who rang it up at another register. Who needs them? Is there a govt financial incentive to hire them? I am turning into a bigoted prick as I gradually realize how much the average Muslim immigrant despises people like me, and that they find recent Muslim massacres of infidels perfectly understandable. "Trump might pull the majority of male democrats from Hillary."
Remember how the 2009 Obama economic porkulus package got rejiggered at the last minute? Much more of it had originally been meant to go to heavy construction work. The sort of work which a goodly number of male Democrats do for a living. Instead, feminists said it wasn't fair to throw all that cash at keeping big, sweaty, hairy men employed. The money was directed instead to support women's jobs in "social" sectors. Mitt Romney, who may or may not be distantly aware that there are people who heft shovels for a paycheck, said not one word about this in 2012. What I like (by which I mean despise) is the notion that companies will just create money out of thin air and give raises to women to close the alleged wage gap, to the extent it actually exists.
Of course, most companies are not flush with cash so the money will have to come from somewhere. And that will be from the salaries and raises of men. If you can't cut ethanol subsidies you aren't ever going to cut anything. Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at January 29, 2016 02:25 PM (voOPb) I honestly believe that since Trump isn't driven by ideology or greed or loyalty to the party, he will make changes that will amaze us and give strokes to the establishment. Trump is driven by ego. When elected, he will be handed a ridiculously bloated, barely functioning bureaucracy. He knows, just as any one of us knows, that making common sense changes will have enormous impact and will make the person in charge look like a genius. Trump will be able to talk over the heads of the media and the establishment politicians, which will enable him to get the upfront rule changes he will need to fire people and clean house. I believe this type of positive feedback will have Trump working 16 hour days actually accomplishing obvious things. And the country will thrive. industrial shredder before the USA invaded. Or now, with IS hacking their heads off and lighting them on fire. You said that they were doing fine when Bush was in office. That is my point of disagreement . Strategic negotiations with Muslim "partners" never result in a positive outcome for ethnic and religious minorities. Saying that the Christians were "fine" under Bush is just facile and untrue. Posted by: Mortimer at January 29, 2016 02:34 PM (R1a9g) Posted by: torquewrench at January 29, 2016 02:34 PM (noWW6) 568
Trump speaks their language. He says what they feel. That simple. He sounds like a union guy.
I think there's a lot to this. And the way most people vote is more gut feeling and "F-- it" when they go into the voting booth than issues and policies. Their Union bosses may tell them to vote x, but if their gut says Y, that's where they'll go. Would it be enough? Not a lot of union guys left these days. Getting hung up on ethanol subsidies when they're gently caressing the trigger of QE4, ramping up illegal immigration from the middle fucking east as well as south and central America, using a "traffic stop" to shoot dead a man who stood up politically to bureaucratic overreach, and treating our military men and women as pawns for their international games of grab-ass with the right hand of the devil himself seems a weeeeee bit short-sighted to me.
Posted by: Ghost of kari - WAR at January 29, 2016 02:29 PM (xuouz) In 2012, the Dept of Labor listed 383,000 people employed in the ethanol industry in the USA. Do you really think Trump would make radical changes? I really don't.
You said that they were doing fine when Bush was in office. No, I said it worked out magnificently for them and for us at home. Huge difference between that and "they're fine." They were free of both Muslim oppression and a tyrant murdering people for disagreeing with him. Rebuilding churches, businesses, lives. When Bush was in office, things were going very well by 2008. Its what came later that ruined it all, not having a born again Christian in office which was Tucker Carlson's a-historical bend. It was brilliant skipping the debate. Trump can't be called a creature of Roger Ailes any more, after the open warfare of the last few days. He leads in Iowa and did nothing to imperil that lead (like he might have with a rough debate grilling from Fox or his opponents). He scored big points with Vets and evangelicals (including the last two Iowa winners on his stage was great theatre).
If he has a ground game, he wins in Iowa. He wins in NH, barring some disaster. Trump isn't my choice, as I would definitely prefer a Republican like Cruz, but he's far better than Rubio (my bet is he is Veep). Put Cruz on the SCOTUS; who knows, maybe the Senate will vote for him just to get rid of him. Posted by: MTF at January 29, 2016 02:40 PM (TxJGV) 585

The report I saw yesterday was that if a personal protection order had been issued against you, you can no longer carry.
1. Is a restraining order the same thing as a personal protection order? 2. You all realize that this means if you already have a valid carry license, it is now null and void because of the new/old rule. Simply because a judge determined that you threw a sock in the direction of your wife during an argument. I say this because PPO's and restraining orders are issued with little evidence because the burden of proof is on the accused, not the accuser. Posted by: Jen the original at January 29, 2016 01:45 PM (TKQrK) Restraining order is the same as a personal protection order. In Virginia, anyone can ask for a restraining order with a claim of violence inflicted or threatened and be issued a 30 day ex-parte temporary restraining order. An individuals's ability to possess firearms is NOT affected by such temporary orders. Within 30 days, the person requesting the restraining order has to go back to court and prove their allegations in a hearing that includes both parties. In Virginia, the burden is on the person asking for the restraining order. If the court feels that a restraining order is appropriate, then they issue one for (usually) a year. During that year, the person restrained may not possess firearms. Posted by: redbanzai at January 29, 2016 02:50 PM (OrI3J) 592

Posted by: Jen the original at January 29, 2016 02:39 PM (TKQrK) Cruz is calling for a (quick) phase-out but your reasoning does not take into account the money forcefully removed from every American's pocket by government ethanol mandates. Your argument is also akin to arguing that a man allowed to rob a bank once should be allowed to continue to rob that bank (of other people's money) because otherwise you would make him unemployed. I am being robbed and I don't have sympathy for the employment status of the robbers. Posted by: redbanzai at January 29, 2016 02:57 PM (OrI3J) 594
Trump-less Fox News Debate Gets Second-Lowest Ratings
The first Republican presidential debate of the season without front-runner Donald Trump generated smaller viewer interest than all but one of this cycle's prior GOP gatherings, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates. http://www.newsmax.com/ Posted by: artisanal 'ette at January 29, 2016 02:32 PM (qCMvj) Rating that don't appear to be driven by the Trumplessness of the debate... I posted this on the second morning thread but i will repost here. Ratings for debates fall as the debate cycle happens. 23 million people watched CNN's first debate but only 11 million watched CNN's second debate. Similarly, 24 million watched the first Fox News debate (the first debate of the cycle so I would expect it to have the highest ratings) but only 13 million watched the second Fox news debate. Those numbers do not support the theory that Trump Trumped all over the debate by not showing up. Posted by: redbanzai at January 29, 2016 03:05 PM (OrI3J) 595
