There's something very screwy going on there in Waco.

Yeah they made some very dodgy comments about the ballistic reports. Some of the killed had been shot by cops, but they wouldn't confirm if they had been killed by cops or...if they had been shot by anyone else.

It looks like the cops killed some people who weren't involved in the "shootout".

But they're not saying that.

48 Microsoft co founder Paul Allen has spent millions on ocean conservation and backed programs to save endangered coral, but those reefs had better not get in the way of his 300 foot megayacht.

Allens $162 million Tatoosh destroyed 13,800 square feet of coral reef in the Cayman Islands protected replenishment zone. Local officials said the massive anchor and chain wiped out most of the coral in the area on the western coast of Grand Cayman on Jan. 14.

Nine for the networks with their alphabet names;
One for Trump that their minds he now owns.

One Trump to troll them all,
One Trump to drive them,
Into madness all and,
In a resort casino bind them.

56 If you saw The Revenant, go to Wiki's page for the Arikara people, the tribe portrayed in the film, called "Ree" by the whites.

Look at the photos on the Wiki page, then ask yourself, why do the Ree in the movie look like dirty white guys?

The Arikara lived in small villages along the upper Missouri, further upstream from where the Mandan were. Look at the Missouri using Google Earth, between the South Dakota line and upwards to Bismarck. That's Ree country. Go way west from there to the Montana line, many days ride by horseback. See any mountains?

The Revenant could have been better done if actors portraying Ree indians were better chosen and made up to look authentic. And the landscapes did not need to include 13,000-foot ridgetops. The landscapes of the upper Missouri are beautiful enough.

That whole mess deserves a lot more coverage than it's received. A generation still talks of Kent State... Good god, what went down in Waco and the cover-up and injustice is so awful. I hope the defense prevails AND the truth comes out.. I'm not holding my breath, but I'd like to think the FBI or Texas Rangers could be trusted... but a lot of folks have a lot to cover up.

It gazed on its creators with despise.

It forged itself a weapon out of memetics, bombast, and social media likes, giving it the shape of a tall, strange, obnoxious man.

And with this weapon in hand it launched an assault directly on the human mind.

107 The Revenant could have been better done if actors portraying Ree indians were better chosen and made up to look authentic. And the landscapes did not need to include 13,000-foot ridgetops. The landscapes of the upper Missouri are beautiful enough.

Yeah it was pretty obviously the Canadian Rockies, but I thought the scenery was the best part. They also needlessly changed the true story which was pretty amazing on its own.

I lived in St. Louis at the time and remember that case. If memory serves, the Illinois State Police were brought in to continue the investigation because the East St. Louis police were somind-bogglingly incompetent. Turns out police hires in East St. Louis were hired as part of a patronage racket.

Meanwhile, prostitutes continued to disappear. They probably still are since whatever monster was doing it is almost certainly still doing it.

Posted by: DaveA at January 28, 2016 11:17 AM (DL2i+)

There's something seriously screwy there. Either one is toxic, and fatally so. Even as a pre-teen, I knew that methanol was deadly. It cam in a pint can labeled "methyl hydrate" and I used it to fuel my toy steam engine. But I would never have dreamed of drinking it, because the can had a skull and crossbones on it.

If these kids are wilfully drinking a known poison, then it's Darwin at work. Too bad, so sad. But if third parties are mixing methanol with Mountain Dew, and peddling it as "legitimate" moonshine, then it's murder.

Enforcing the law would be racist! Instead we should take the simpler path: redefine power, wealth, race, gender, sexuality, and the objective nature of truth and fiction into a subjective reality of privilege and social justice.

That will work out much better.

I'll talk about it again on the Sunday book thread, because that's where it came up. Someone recommended a 1906 book on Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart.

I'm reading it for old school woodcraft and a sense of what it was like to keep yourself alive in the wild.

What depresses me is that I can't do it. I don't mean I don't have the woodsmanship skills, I mean that I live in the Northeast and there is nowhere that I can just disappear into the woods with a gun and fishing tackle and a backpack or canoe's worth of survival gear.

So we have been trying to come up with A name for female genitalia that would rhyme in "this is my rifle this is my (blank), this is for fighting this is for (blank)". However, both of us have been drawing a blank. I've tried Poon, snatch, pussy, Twat, and for the life of me I can't think of something that rhymes.

Perhaps. I've canoe-camped the Rangely Lakes, which is north by NH standards but Maine still extends way up into Canuckistan.

Do you know of any resources for investigating that?

257 "Yesterday (it was an eyeroller so I didn't save it) I saw where a state
court someplace in the south, said it was just fine to remove monuments
honoring soldiers from the civil war."

Since we are now in the business of removing monuments and names of people that have any unpure backgrounds that might cause a panic attack to special snowflakes, when is West Virginia going to start the process of sending Sen. Robert Byrd down the memory hole? The man was a leader of his KKK chapter and half the state is named after him. That fact that it was a long time ago cannot, of course, be allowed to absolve him of his crimes. Even the mention of his name is a micro-aggression that the world must not tolerate any longer.

Someone here said that Cruz showed up to criticize the Obama open borders policy and that the teddy bears and soccer balls was all Becks stupidity and flaky emotionalism. I have no idea if this accurate. Why Cruz couldn't just make an appearance separately to make a criticism of what was happening on the border instead of hitching himself to Beck like that? Maybe he was using Beck for the extra exposure and publicity it would give him? Idk. Stupid decision by Cruz

It's not strange. It's Minx. 0.5 in all it's 2005 glory.

Don't copy and paste directly from your browser.

Copy and paste to Notepad or another plain text editor. And, no, this does not mean Word.

If you are trying to post text from some article, you need to remove and retype punctuation marks especially all apostrophes and smart quotes - the curved quotation marks - and replace them with the plain text versions.

Only then recopy and paste into the comment box.

Also, use a shortened url or link code like TinyURL.com in the text instead of posting a long URL.

274 Years ago, there was a horrible murder in Pasadena, CA. A young mother ran out to the mall to buy a bab shower gift. As she was going down the escalator heading for her car, two 18 yr old thugs going up the escalator saw her and followed her. They kidnapped her and took her to JPL. They robbed, raped, and shot her dead. Luckily, a JPL security guard found her body and an apb was sent out on her car. Even more luck when a reserve officer went to pick up a friend to drive to a mace class at 8 am. While he was waiting for his friend to come out, he sees the car drive pass him and pull into a driveway. He then watches the guy change the license plates. They found her property in his house. I remember in court his mother looked like she 28. Anyway, he got the death penalty and has been sitting on death row for 25 years.

You're not wrong, but they're failing miserably and will continue to fail because they fundamentally misunderstand Texas.

Wendy Davis is a great example. She was a terrible, terrible candidate for statewide office in Texas. She lost the Rio Grande Valley primary to some random unknown candidate because, shockingly, people in the Valley weren't onboard with Abortion Barbie.

They also continue to push too hard on the SJW crap (see: Houston) and are pissing off their liberal coalition (read: minorities)

Meanwhile, the growth in the state is mainly in the suburbs, and those are staying red as can be.

292 I have read that the Indy 500 is going to be using E85 as fuel in all cars. It makes a good racing fuel because it has an effective octane rating of 110 or greater which allows very high compression ratios in the engines for a very favourable power to weight factor.

337 I know its not the book thread, but I am reading this wonderful book called, "Soliloquy Prayer" (Unfolding Our Hearts to God) by a priest-Dennis . Billy. I had started it before, but put it down. Each chapter has a psalm, a meditation by various saints or other RC religious figures , some reflection questions and an exercise. When you work it through it's like going on a mini spiritual retreat. The prayers are very honest:
Here's a bit from the excellent chapter called, "Facing The Darkness" about suffering in our lives:

"Come to me. Lord. Help me to cast out the surrounding darkness. Help me to find even the smallest sign of your presence in the circumstances of my life. t Here is where I must find you: not in the distant heavens, not in the depth of the oceans, not in distant lands, or atop tall mountains, but here where I live, in this place and time, now, where I live and am experiencing difficulty., Here, Lord, is where I seek you. Come to me and help me to renew my faith and hope in you. Help me to cling to you with passion, to proclaim you with zeal, to acclaim you with eloquence, not only in times of prosperity, but in times of hardship.

368 Got into a discussion on Twitter about Nazis and socialism. Its pretty hilarious, because it follows the usual leftist argument:

Conservative: "true statement"
Leftist: BS you lying liar that's trash!
C: Proof
L: your proof is unacceptable because I don't like the source!
C: more proof
L: Here's a quote that says something different, your proof is meaningless!

etc

But what really intrigues me is how they're defining socialism. Most of them don't even understand what the term means. For some, its just a stand in for "all good things I support," for others its an exact synonym for "Communism" and for another group it means "the opposite of nationalism." That last one is particularly hilarious because it is their entire argument: Nazis couldn't be socialists, because they're nationalist.

But its amazing to me the basic ignorance of their own terms and ideas. Its one thing to not understand economics in general, but to not even comprehend what you are trying to argue for and impose is just breathtaking.

It would be like people who call themselves Christians angry and shocked when you point out that means believing in Jesus Christ.

The ignorance is understandable when you consider their "beliefs" flow entirely from narcissism. It's about feeling good about themselves so they really don't care what Socialism is. They want and need to believe that supporting Socialism makes them wonderful people. Showing proof to the contrary just causes them to engage in the pathological denial that is another of their major traits.

Even when confronted with the specific dictionary definition of the term, they block it out like a lunatic and plug on as if nothing has happened. Its sort of amazing to watch.

Just more proof that the left and the right are on different train tracks that cannot meet. We use reason and logic and define terms; they use emotion and dreams and words mean whatever is needed to win the argument at the time.

I'm old enough to remember the late 60s and 70s. We were on a downhill rocketsled back then, but then things did get better, so decline doesn't have to be linear. The natural arc does bend that way, though. All we can do is keep pushing back against the DeBlasio types until we're outnumbered by the free shit people.

411 Although gasoline has more energy content than an equal volume of ethanol, gasoline burns much hotter, wasting much of that energy as wast heat that requires a large cooling system to get rid of. Gasoline also has a tendency to detonate during the compression stroke if the octane rating is not high enough. With an octane rating like you get with E85, you can build an engine with a compression ratio you would ordinarily only find on a diesel engine. It is the high compression ratio that makes diesel engines so powerful for their size and so efficient in their fuel consumption.

413 It is always a pleasure to engage in a technical discussion with a knowledgeable person even if they disagree because I can learn from those who know more than me and teach those who know less. Often someone can point out an issue I had overlooked..

And then there are the shit head trolls who know nothing, learn nothing and contribute nothing..

415 The level of argument in the multiple regression article is akin to blaming the gun for gun violence. Multiple regression is just one of many statistical tools, and Nesbitt blames it for everything from confounding variables to spurious correlation.
