Quote of the Day I

If we are unable to protect the external borders of the European Union, however costly and strenuous it may be, the Schengen zone will be destroyed by we ourselves.

-- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban

Quote of the Day II

[Dr Adam] Perkins published his findings last November in a book called The Welfare Trait, but you won't have heard about it or seen it reviewed in any UK newspaper anywhere because his research has been judged to be off limits by the self-appointed guardians of the academic establishment and their outriders in the media. A senior editor of Nature, one of the leading academic journals, refused to consider it for review because she regards scientific research into the personalities of the long-term unemployed as "unethical," and a sociology professor whom the publishers had asked to peer-review the book refused to do so on the grounds that any book linking benefit dependency to personality must be nonsense because personality is a "capitalist construct."

Truth Wins, Feminists Lose, Man's Life is Destroyed

Is disagreeing with a feminist on Twitter in Canada a crime?

In 2012, Canadian feminist Stephanie Guthrie (@amirightfolks on Twitter) decided to ruin Greg Elliott's life, because (a) she didn't like him and (b) he disagreed with her. Friday, after subjecting Mr. Elliott to a three-year ordeal, Ms. Guthrie's destructive vendetta reached its final conclusion of failure in a Toronto courtroom.

So no it's not a crime after all. Not that that really helps Mr. Elliott much with his legal expenses or reputation at this point.

Detroit's Teacher Union Meltdown

Strikes by public sector unions are illegal in Michigan so Detroit teachers have been conducting coordinated 'sick outs' several times over the last few weeks. The Detroit School District is trying to get this declared illegal by an Appeals Court.

And why are the teachers unhappy? Well mainly because the state has taken control of the failing school district and the teachers union wants all the district's debts to be paid for by the state at large while the district is free from state control to do whatever it wants. This seems unlikely to happen.

In short, the teachers want Lansing to pay Detroit's debts, and yet let the same people who torched the city keep running things. They are right that conditions in Detroit schools are unacceptable, but at the same time, it is unreasonable to accept that people who don't actually live in Detroit should just pay up without having some say in how the money is spent.

If public unions can't accept that reality, and if they continue to respond to it the way Detroit teachers have done, with an illegal strike, then those unions should probably brace themselves for a rash of Scott Walker-like laws limiting the power of public unions.

Lowell, MA to Require Carry Permit Applicants to Write an Essay Explaining Why They Should Be Allowed to Carry a Weapon

Georgia Tech's Harassment of a Fraternity Spills Into the State Legislature

Last August, an African-American woman lodged a complaint against Phi Delta Theta, alleging that members of the fraternity shouted racial slurs at her from the windows of their campus house.

The fraternity denied that any such thing happened. It produced security video of the young woman walking by, unflinching. Windows from which the slurs were alleged to have been hurled had been sealed for years.

Even so, two months later, a Tech administrator in charge of student discipline placed the fraternity and its 100 or so members on "suspension in abeyance," restricting its members to academic activities - no intramural sports, no socials - and requiring members to undergo sensitivity training as a condition for lifting the sanction.

No appeal was allowed, to either the Tech president or the state Board of Regents.

"Double-secret probation," snarled Earl Ehrhart, a state representative from west Cobb County, who entered the picture shortly afterward.

The Forefathers Of Mad Men

From a 1950 Life article on the men of Madison Avenue.

For it happens that the apotheosis of American advertising, the New York agency man, works in and lives his working hours in an actual never-never land, a Dream World for Men. His domain is a stretch of Madison Avenue between the approximate boundaries of 40th Street and 52nd. And it's known in the business as Advertising Row.The Row has everything, including hope and inspiration, both for the gentleman whose fluent words are designed to charm you with his client's product and for the artist whose illustrations will depict a happier life conceivably available to all. It has the best collection of men's shops in the nation, the best tailors, the best restaurants, the best bars and by all odds the best dressed and possibly the best-looking men.

...On Madison it is possible, but not probable, for an advertising man to live a self-sufficient life both in business and pleasure. He may even dwell on Madison, though it is more likely that he will reach it each workday morning by tunneling from Grand Central Terminal, having arrived there any time between nine and eleven, depending on the nature and prominence of his job, from his picture-book home in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

He can lunch on Madison, buy his clothes there, from socks to opera hat, entertain his clients there, shop for his wife and children, dine, and, if business is pressing, stop over at any one of several elegantly comfortable hotels. In the end, he may even be buried from Frank E. Campbell's notable mortuary at the corner of Madison and 81st Street.

Japan Seemingly Obsessed With Sex But Few Seem to Be Doing the Deed

Japan is well known for many things, and its obsession with sex is one of them. It has one of the most robust pornographic and adult-toy industries in the world and airs TV commercials for items as banal as candy that feature sexually suggestive themes. It even has an annual fertility festival that parades two nearly two metre tall penis sculptures down a busy street on a Sunday afternoon.

And yet nearly half of singles in Japan have no interest in dating - a situation that many experts predict will help lead to a population decline of one-third in the next 45 years.

According to a survey of never-married people by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, 27.6 per cent of single men and 22.6 per cent of single women have no interest in engaging in a relationship with the opposite sex. Researchers cite those statistics to argue that a significant portion of Japanese simply has no interest in sex.

She's from Lawrence, MA, but migrated (legally!) to CA in 1940, and was a Rosie the Riveter at the Douglas plant in Long Beach, where they turned out B-17 components on subcontract to Boeing.

It was cool to see those old mill towns on the MA rivers. But, in the mid 1990s, they had not yet begun to rebound via "gentrificaction".

But I'll echo the earlier comment. My essay would indeed, merely transcribe the 2nd Amendment, but I'd footnote it with the entire compendium of the Heller decision, just to help deliver a multi-pound paper pile of a clue

But, would encircling my house with a quintuple pile of concertina wire be too provocative, I wonder?

83 Introducing the Russian In-Mouth Dental CNC Mill

Is it safe?

Grandpa had stories, growing up in pre-WW1 Southern Washington about the dentists that would come to town.
It was such a small town, it was dominated by the sandstone quarries and on the main north-south railroads but no dentist practiced full time there. Originally one of the guys up at the quarry had some forceps, and the quarry blacksmith would hold the patient down while he sat on the toolbox and extracted teeth.
Then later there was the dentist that would come down in a touring car from Olympia, and sit the patient in the back seat and work on him there. He'd toss the extracted teeth into the gutter
Finally there was dentist that came down a couple days a month and set up temporary shop in the window of the drugstore. I think Dad said his drill was powered by the patient pedaling and the deeper the drill got the faster the patient tended to pedal, but that might have been about another set up.

Anyways, Grandpa said dentistry was something of a spectator sport.

It was all intriguing stuff, but, Klaatu didn't really sound like the Beatles... they did in a way, but it wasn't their style. Not in the 70's anyway. I remember thinking that if the Beatles really did secretly get back together, to do a record that was in the Revolver/Sgt Pepper type vein, they'd come up with better stuff than this. It was not bad stuff at all, pretty interesting. But, it was too elaborate and produced. If the Beatles had done it, it would either be quite half assed, like they were just noodling around, or it would be totally killer, if they were serious. Way too slick for just dicking around, and not nearly good enough for serious.

I don't know of a single regular poster here who has ever supported or endorsed the GOPe. This is fucking bullshit to justify support Trump. As a matter of fact this whole blog has been anti GOPe for as long as I've been lurking and recently posting. So spare everybody the righteous indignation. Just because some of us don't support fucking Trump doesn't make us GOPe supporters or goddamn cuckholds. Seriously, this shit is fine at Breitbart but goddamn it this is "A Very Smart Military Blog".

156 Just watched John Wick on DVD. Didn't like it.
The combat pistol scenes seemed plausible. The fight scenes were difficult to see in the dark, as were the combat scenes, but there were flashes of 'do not do that', kind of thing. Of course, the hero always does the right thing, and how would he know? To make the drama, the hero gets captured, of course, and saved by his friend, of course, and his friend dies because he help, so sad.

But the morality play was not satisfying.

Also watched Jodie Foster in 'The Brave One'. Like this one better. Too much time spent in the beginning establishing the love interest. We already know what the movie is about, don't waste time. That time could have been better spent showing the difficulty of buying an illegal handgun in NYC. They made it too easy. I loved how Jodie Foster portrayed her character. The ending was a trifle difficult to accept; no policeman would have done that.

And watched about half of Mad Max: Fury Road which is simply an incredibly stupid film. Unwatchable.

Commit this to memory: (phonetically) "man(as in "man", not "mon")zhe la marde, Pepsi" (mange la merde, pepsi). The authentic Quebec accent, "mange" rhymes with English "flange", not the nasal "mawnge" of Parisian French. And "merde" rhymes with English "lard", not like Parisian French "mairde".

Went to the "office" the other day, moved a thing on the floor, and there was a cowering little mouse. I thought for a moment he was dead, but he was just frozen with fear or confusion, instead of running.

Once I realized he was actually alive, I just stomped him. Remarkably, I got him just right so he was killed but not squished and messy.

Actually, most remarkable was that I got him at all. I've caught many mice in traps over the years, and caught a few that the cats brought in the house, damaged, but I've never just stomped one before.

Cato, lets not pretend that past presidential candidates for at least the last 20 years have been conservatives. We may have held our nose and voted for them, but we knew they were not conservative when we did it. Cruz from all appearances and actions, is an actual conservative and he is well worth a vote.
Trump, OTOH, is not our son of a bitch... he is his own son or a bitch and the vitriol that we (me included) have loved thrown at the left is going to be far less attractive when he makes the deals he is promising with the left and gets angry with us for questioning his deal making.

287 Story time!

I own a Taxi company, which I drive for on the weekends.

Saturday night, got a call to pick up 2 people at an office park very near a bar called Electric Cowboy here in Kennesaw, GA.

2 really drunk chicks get in the car, briefly, and tell me to drive a couple of blocks away and just sit there. Turns out, the guys they were with struck out and called cuz the chicks were hammered (among other things).

The 2 chicks had me drive them right back to their car. Insisted. I dropped them off, and away I went. End of scene 1.

Scene 2, there was a jacket and a backpack left in back seat. It was late on Saturday night, so I checked it out Sunday afternoon. Remember, some dudes called for them, no phone number on file.

Turns out there was an old time Thermos looking rig in the backpack, no ID there or in the jacket. Open it up and find a 9"x4" cylinder container full of.....nature. 5 ounces worth.

So, I have that going for me. Which ish....nice.

Now and then I stumble upon a FB or Twitter account wondering where this person is on current events... and sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised, they disagree about such-and-such but overall are conservative or patriotic or what not.

And then (unfortunately most of the time) I find a hateful POS and feel stupid for having wasted my time.

I went through the latter tonight, and this person was making me angrier and angrier... until I finally found her spiel about, of all things, why she refuses to have any respect for the military or anyone in it, and how they're basically just all a bunch of hired murderers.

Enraging, except that at least in this case it only proved she's just another mentally feminist nutfuck.

When I was in High School, back in the 70's, the highest level mathematics class available was "math analysis". Of course, the computerized grade-tracking system only had nine capital letters available for course names, so our report cards said "MATH ANAL".

Of course -- considering the instructor, "Bert Smith*" was a mincing, prissy, recluse -- the course was generally known as "anal math", and someone printed hundreds of "Bert Smith whacked here ->" labels that were found everywhere in the backs of cupboards, telephone booths, service corridors, undersides of desks, etc..

I considered this as a possible solution when I had squirrels in the attic. With the water in the bucket, because squirrels are good at jumping. 341 I think any of 'em, once they hit puberty, are rape threats.

The thing is to them, women are shit, just basically slaves for 'em. Any woman who isn't covered in a damn tent, is flaunting herself, and thus fair game.

They absolutely cannot handle hot women looking hot. It drives them nuts. I think it makes them realize what utter worthless scum they are.

I remember reading about some technique the CIA guys learned about these guys, and their hangups with hot women. They'd get some female to dress hot, you know, TA shoved right up there in their face, long legs and dressed to the nines. They'd have the all the other men (our guys) act deferential to her, saluting or what-not, letting the muzzie know she was in charge, the big Kahuna.

That drove them nuts. They couldn't stand the hot woman in authority. And then she's sort of display dominate behavior over the muzzie for the coup de grace.

They just can't take it.

355 My take on the Japan thing-- I'm guessing it's at least partially hormonal. Too much estrogen in the water (women taking birth control piss and it goes into the ecosystem). Japan is densely populated and I hear that traditional water treatment does not remove the hormones.

A little more testosterone for both sexes should do the trick.

BTW, since cholesterol is the raw material for testosterone production in men, the whole low-cholesterol diet fad has been a disaster for American women.

Low cholesterol diets in Japan (not enough animal fat) could be contributing as well.

The old reliable spring mousetrap, baited with a raisin, works wonders. And, if you are careful, you can handle the trap by the edges, and dispose of the mouse without touching it. I've also had good luck with the gray Victor "gravity-operated" live traps, but the mice piss and shit in them, so you have to wash them out under the sink. Advantage: spring trap. Live trap's advantage is you can set them in places accessible to pets without worry.

Tomcat has made a better mousetrap. Easy to bait & set, and very easy to dispose of the dead rat without ever touching it, or getting close to it. Works a lot like a clothespin.

372 The first house my husband and I lived in as a married couple was a brand new construction...and it had mice.

At first just a mouse. One little mouse near the trashcan.

Then suddenly so many mice. Mice everywhere. We pulled out the appliances and went in the attic and couldn't figure out where the hell they were coming from.

We finally hired someone to put out bait, because what could you do? I once caught two mice in a single trap. That's how bad it was.

Anyway, when we were moving out I discovered their point of entry. The hall closet. I guess we saved the next family some hassle.

This is what is killing us, the fast carbs. Me, if I could kick the damn tea, I could pretty much eliminate the fast carbs completely. I'm not that big on bread, unlike most of family, and can do without it.

Whether or not the HFCS is really worse than sucrose, I don't know, but I've pretty much given up anything with that shit in it. Occasionally some of the drink companies will put out "real sugar" specials. I got some Pepsi a while back that tasted just like I remember back in the '80s. But nothing with the HFCS goes down the hatch much at all.

Well, the stuff is in condiments. So I still get it there, but that can't be all that much.

The body only metabolizes mono-sachharides like fructose and glucose. Energy must be expended to cleave the di-sachharide bond in sucrose (regular sugar), and not all bonds can be broken immediately.

Similarly, long chained carbohydrates can only be digested by cleaving the bonds of the tips of the poly-sachharides one at a time, so it take much longer to metabolize, which is why poly-sachharides are good for yielding energy over a longer period of time.

In contrast, mono-sachharides are ready for instnat metbolization.

433 421: But look at the glycemic index and load for a Russet baked potato. That's starch, right, complex chain carbs, but yet the body is damn good at converting that to glucose and spiking the blood sugar and insulin response. It's actually higher than sucrose (and I think's that because of the fructose -- fructose doesn't spike glucose, but then there's all this talk, which is controversial, that it is actually worse).

I've read that stuff that says, absent fast carbs, the stuff that just dumps glucose into your system like crazy, that all the slow cards could never dump glucose fast enough. The density is such that you'd have to be like a cow or something, constantly eating 24/7 just to get the necessary calories from the slower carb veggies.

I've been to Vegas, dear God I hope I never have to go back. Not the

place to go if you're an introvert. I can STILL hear the noise even 5

years later.

One year a group that I can't name, but they
allegedly help people on the autism spectrum, had their conference in
Las Vegas. Considering that a large number of people with autism have
problems filtering out stimuli, I get the impression they didn't think
that one all the way through.

The fiancee and I did a trip to Vegas and booked at the Excalibur. We specifically booked a nonsmoking room.

So we get there, and you have to walk through the casino to get to the hotel registration. Then you wait in line, then you go off and ride the elevator to rooms. We noted approvingly that the entire floor was "no-smoking". So we find our way down the corridor to find our room, open the door, haul our shit into the middle, close the door, and look around.....and we quickly notice that something smells like cigarette smoke.

I'm thinking it's maybe the drapes -- or a shared AC system with a smoking floor, or coming in through the window; the fiancee thinks someone may have hidden out and smoked in the bathroom, or maybe the bed linens. So we fan out in opposite directions and start sniffing. And we circle the entire room sniffing at stuff, until we meet in the middle, point at each other, and exclaim, "it's YOU!!!"

It seems our little traipse across the casino and standing in line for the hotel desk permeated us and everything we owned with cigarette smoke. The reason the room reeked everywhere and nowhere was because it wasn't the room, it was us.

Those goals are so unrealistic, you are setting yourself up for failure. Do a count of how many of each you do now, reduce each number by ten percent, and set that as your goal for the next two months. Once that rate becomes the new normal, set a further ten percent reduction, and so on. Idea is to never deprive yourself so severely that you simply give up, and blow it off.

It also allows one to tweak the recipe to suit one's taste, and to experiment.

For example, with steaks (admittedly not the best steak available), I'll broil it on a bed of bacon and water chestnuts with the first side covered in mustard and garlic, and then the other side after flipping with salsa verde and cheese. And, of course, a dry rub of salt and mace. Quite tasty.

Heck, I've found that cooking pork chops in apple juice and space of apple cider with ginger is very tasty, and from which you can reduce the liquid and create a rue to serve with the pork chops.

Colorado Alex, actually that's what I've been doing; just not eating unless I'm really hungry. Unfortunately then I overcompensate and will eat, for example (and I have done this too many times), an ENTIRE large pizza from Round Table.

The counselor I've been seeing has been telling me, screw whether you feel hungry or not. Get up in the morning, EAT SOMETHING HEALTHY and low-calorie so that I don't set off my body's "starvation mode' and cause it to horde already-unnecessary calories. Then a small healthy snack, a sensible lunch, another small healthy snack, and a sensible dinner.

I admit, it seems counterintuitive. But everyone else I've talked to says, that's what healthy eaters do.

I've become convinced that some constituent of chinchona bark -- i.e. quinine -- either accelerates metabolism or subtly suppresses appetite or something mysterious, such that if you drink real tonic water (i.e. carbonated drink dosed with quinine) you end up having the calories in the sweetener canceled out by the effects of the quinine.

Also, the disaccharides in true cane sugar somehow satiates humans' hunger better than simple monosaccharides do (some as--yet undocumented psychological effect).

End result: Drinking real tonic water sweetened with real sugar is actually quite good for you. Even though, technically, it is no different than any "soft drink," the most reviled substance in the Western diet.

I was recently at a tasting panel and a new product - Elderflower Tonic Water from Fever Tree -- blew away the competition. I was in full agreement.

Back in the 1980s I practically fetishized my fast food treats (and having the money and freedom to indulge in them), and I ate literally whatever, whenver I wanted, and screw any kind of eating schedule.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 26, 2016 01:40 AM (Z8fuk)

Yeah, me too. I never liked 'always spreadable' margarine.

The one thing I do whenever possible is buy low sodium. For butter, I buy 'sweet', adding salt as required. I buy the low sodium Kikkoman Soy Sauce, as I think it tastes better. Same for low sodium V-8 Juice (I make a virgin low sodium V-8 every morning, adding 1 juiced lime, 1/2 juiced lemon, Worcestershire and Tabasco). But I stay away from the low/reduced fat products like mayo or sour cream. I don't eat heaping gobs of the stuff so why short myself a little joy once in a while?

Oh, and never buy pre-shredded cheese. They coat the cheese with something to keep the grated cheese separate. Grate your own cheese upon demand. (I have a small hand crank grater that works 'grate' and is pretty easy to clean; proper tools make the kitchen.)

Some quickie things are okay, but some are ridiculous (like buying jars of crushed garlic; really?). Or how about canned potatoes?

490 Another "rule" I've seen is, if it doesn't rot, don't eat it, and the faster it rots the better. If something has a long shelf life and will just sit there for ages without breaking down and spoiling, stay away from it.

Now obviously, that's not to be taken to extremes (ie, salt doesn't break down) and too damn zealously, but it's on to something.

The reason "Big Food" likes processing is for shelf-stability. If something breaks down quickly, it's more expensive too handle and all that. And the techniques that lead to better stability are not that good for us.

493 On the subject of tea -- as a relic of the old British Empire (see "Boston Tea Party"), it is said that there is an anonymous warehouse on the Thames near London where all the tea in the world is sorted. Bales and bales of tea from all over the world enter, a special plugging tool is plunged into them and a sample extracted, and that sample comes before a panel of Masters.

They sniff the tea, crush it in their fingers, sometimes lick it, very rarely gesture to their staff to brew it for further quaffing, throw the remainder on the floor....and render their opinion. "That's decent, send it to the midlands." "Were there sticks in that? -- ship it to Scotland." "That is very fine indeed, send it to the Queen at Balmoral." "That is an average cuppa, send it back to India." "It's better than nothing, send it to Northern Ireland." "Yup, export quality -- send this to Twinings." "It's recognizably tea, send it to Ireland." "Not too bad, send it to Whittard's." "It's barely recognizable as tea, send it to Australia." "It's better than Ireland deserves, send it to PG Tips." "Better than average, but not much -- Taylors of Harrogate."

And, at the end of each day, the Masters of Tea turn to their staff and say, "we're done for today -- sweep the floor and ship it to the US."

Go for the protein at breakfast. If you need something quick, make hardboiled eggs and just eat one or two for breakfact. A protein heavy breakfast will stave off hunger.

I remember working with a French guy at one of the National Labs (which means limited opportunities for food, especailly on the weekends). They had a breakfast buffet, and then individual meals for lunch and dinner. I would eat eggs, bacon, and sausage, but he would only eat pastries and the like. 496 Oh, and never buy pre-shredded cheese.

Some good thoughts there. I have never bought pre-shredded cheese. I use a manual grater, which is basically a pyramid with different-gauge holes on its four sides. Takes no time at all to grate up some Cheddar for mac and cheese.

499 487 RWC, the 'eating when you're not hungry' part. :-)

I confess: I was on an eat-what-you-like, eat-as-much-fast-food-as-you-want binge for 30 years. I'm not kidding. Back in the 1980s I practically fetishized my fast food treats (and having the money and freedom to indulge in them), and I ate literally whatever, whenver I wanted, and screw any kind of eating schedule.

Then around 2008 or so, when I first started to have some serious weight gain as well as back problems... that's when I more or less finally got the wake-up call.

Oh ok.

BRB. Lemme see f I can find the regimen my dad, brother and I were on.

Have to stick to it, but you won't be hungry. And you aren't choking down inedible crap. *just have some hot sauce handy. Made it much better.

Posted by: RickZ at January 26, 2016 02:04 AM (Ix+HS)

Just go with the big blocks of cheese and slice, dice, or shred it yourself.

There are legitimate reasons for buying canned potatoes, fruit, veggies, &c.: Shelf life. If you want food in case of an emergency, including those types of canned goods are a good idea. I usually keep a minimum, and eat them only when they are nearing their sell-by date.

Posted by: The Uncanned Hat at January 26, 2016 02:15 AM (vBeA5)

509 Another "rule" I've seen is, if it doesn't rot, don't eat it, and the faster it rots the better. If something has a long shelf life and will just sit there for ages without breaking down and spoiling, stay away from it.

Now obviously, that's not to be taken to extremes (ie, salt doesn't break down) and too damn zealously, but it's on to something.

The counselor I've been seeing has been telling me, screw whether you
feel hungry or not. Get up in the morning, EAT SOMETHING HEALTHY and
low-calorie so that I don't set off my body's "starvation mode' and
cause it to horde already-unnecessary calories. Then a small healthy
snack, a sensible lunch, another small healthy snack, and a sensible
dinner.

I admit, it seems counterintuitive. But everyone else I've talked to says, that's what healthy eaters do.

Posted by: qdpsteve at January 26, 2016 01:58 AM (ntObR)

Go for the protein at breakfast. If you need something quick, make
hardboiled eggs and just eat one or two for breakfact. A protein heavy
breakfast will stave off hunger.

I remember working with a French guy at one of the National Labs
(which means limited opportunities for food, especailly on the
weekends). They had a breakfast buffet, and then individual meals for
lunch and dinner. I would eat eggs, bacon, and sausage, but he would
only eat pastries and the like. At lunch he would be starving to death
and then eat a bunch of food, while I was good through to dinner or
beyond. I got him to eat eggs and meat during breakfast, and he was
much more satisfied and a lot less ravenous around lunch.

Posted by: The Protein Hat at January 26, 2016 02:07 AM (vBeA5)

I always used to think, "ewwww -- I shouldn't eat eggs in the morning, 'cause whenever I do, I feel full and don't want lunch." .....then the cluebat hit. Yeah, if I eat 300 calories of eggs in the morning I can skip lunch -- but if I eat 300 calories of carbs, I'll crave it 'cause I'll be famished. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Honey doesn't need to be frozen. IIRC, it is the one food that won't go bad (aside from straight sugar).

But it you want to freeze it you'll have to do it quickly to do it properly. Cool it too slow and your crash out a bunch of sugar crystals that may not properly redessolve upon warming. If you want to freeze it, use dry ice.

On a side note, people used to use honey as medicine... especially when it was used to preserve corpses:

Both can be frozen. It's just a matter of getting to the right temperature.

Interesing thing about freezing alcholic drinks: You can selectively crystalize out the water to increase the proof of the drink. You can actually make beers with the proof of hard liquor that way; and because it isn't actually distilling the alcohol, you technically aren't moonshining, and thus avoid Federal entanglement.

One thing that actually works for weight loss.....figure out something that is halfway balanced -- then eat the same exact thing for a week. Do that the nth week of every month.

As an example, take the week starting on the second Sunday of a given month. Find a food that won't give you scurvy or something if you eat it for a week -- e.g. supreme combination pizza with onions, peppers, sausage, and pepperoni. Have that for dinner every freakin' day.....after about day 3, you'll cut down portion size without even thinking about it.

Next month, try Marie Callander's chicken parmagiana frozen dinner. Month after that, P. F. Chang's chicken spring rolls. Whatever it is, eat the exact same thing for seven straight days......then let it rotate back in to your everyday meals when it decides to do so.

IIRC, jarred, pickled, or canned garlic looses some of its healthy benefits due to sterilization during processing. However, powdered garlic is processed without that, and is considered just as healthy as fresh garlic.

Personally, I'll use both. Dash of powdered garlic to an omlet or a meat dish works great. Whole cloves I like to use as a side dish: Put cloves, some green onion, salt, pepper, tumeric, and a dash of olive oitl in a sealed foil pouch and chuck it in with the meat (either grill or oven), and you'll have a healthy little side dish.

(1) I'm ethnically mostly Irish -- so: boiled meats, potatoes, cabbage, and leeks feature prominently in old family recipes.

(2) Which is why I tend to avoid them. Instead, much of the things I cook will have either minced garlic from a jar, smooshed minced garlic from a jar, or powdered garlic in it.

I like knives. All sizes.

I don't have much room for kitchen gadgets, so I'm very selective. How selective? I have two electric coffee grinders, one for coffee and one for spices. I have a large food processor I rarely use because my stick blender has the attachments to make it a mini food processor. I was at a flea market and bought a nice old-fashioned glass hand juice squeezer for $5; I love the thing. I'm not paying $20 for some plastic juice squeezer with Martha Stewart's name on it. I'm looking for a sturdy olive pitter, but I'm leery of ordering on line as I want to actually get a feel for it before I buy one because the last one I bought was on the flimsy side and one needs a well made olive pitter (if one uses fresh olives like I do).

I enjoy cooking, though, including the prep. There's something soothing about prepping one's food, knowing what's in the final dish.

Posted by: L, Elle at January 26, 2016 02:56 AM (2x3L+)

545 Ah, garlic. Nature's wonder food.
I've taken to using garlic salt on almost everything now instead of just salt.
Take an entire head of garlic, and roast it along with whatever you're putting in the oven that night. You won't be sorry. It speaks like butter, and is so mild and sweet, you'll want to become a garlic farmer.
And, it might be pretty late, but separate a head of garlic into cloves, and shove the cloves into the ground tomorrow morning - by June or july, you should have a dozen or so heads of garlic (when the tops start to turn yellow).

30 years ago, I worked with a strapping young black man that walked around outside all day maintaining tennis courts. He would occasionally pull a napkin out of his pocket and chew on something. Finally, when I asked, he offered me a raw garlic clove. I bet he ate 6 a day. Woody was 65 years old, but looked about 30.

And yeah, sriracha is a go to. Always have a bottle here. Did you know that you can now buy little single-use packages like ketchup at burger king? Hopefully, they'll be available at fast food joints before long.

I use garlic in more ways than minced. I love roasted garlic, makes a great cream sauce, mashed potato addition, in pasta dishes and I even use it for garlic bread. I use sliced garlic for some dishes, like string beans almondine. I also throw whole cloves in broths and whatnot. Jarred garlic just doesn't have the versatility I require in the kitchen. And it is expensive.

549 Chi, an old school (as in ancient Roman) way to preserve roasted garlic is to roast the garlic, squeeze out the whole cloves when slightly cool, let the cloves cool thoroughly, then place into a mason jelly-type jar, covering with olive oil then the lid. That can be left on the counter, adding a clove or two to a dish when needed. The oil can also be used.

It's like Petey in "Clear and Present Danger" (1994) trying to crack Ritter's password: "We're beyond birthdays now".
Yet, your Creator is not hiding this from you. The Nobel Prize in 1982 was awarded for the discovery of prostaglandins. So, somewhat old news.

554 In the off chance that it may help you sleep, Elle, I'll share an old musician's trick for relaxing the mind/body.

Everyone knows that when people get nervous (hello orchestra auditions!), they feel short of breath.

What most people do not know is that the shortness of breath does not come from an inability to get more air in, exactly, but rather from failing to get enough old air out.

Unbeknownst to most, when you breathe out _far enough_, a reflexive lengthening of the spine is triggered, forcing the whole body to relax, and eventually the mind with it.

So take a deepish breath, hold it for a second, then let it out maybe fifteen or twenty percent _farther_ than normal, slowly and easily. toward the end you may start to feel things unkink just a little, or not if it is the first try.

Repeat as many times as necessary, and it should help bring you to a physical calm that may help you sleep.

Or play a better orchestral audition.

Idk Cthulhu. I can't sleep in a normal way. My life is so fucked up.
I'm awake in the middle of the night and then have to force myself to
stay awake during the day for work and then collapse early in the
evening and then I'm awake again all night. Like right now.

Posted by: L, Elle at January 26, 2016 02:56 AM (2x3L+)

I can very well sympathize. 13 years ago, I had problems with normal sleep; would "wake up" at work, fully dressed; wouldn't remember driving home; and would drowse off in meetings that I had called about my top priorities. For my 40th birthday, I decided to change physicians from one who had completely lost my trust, and mentioned these things to my new physician. A month later, I was on CPAP, and a month after that this crap stopped happening.

(1) Have you discussed this with your primary care physician?

Posted by: cthulhu at January 26, 2016 03:13 AM (EzgxV)

557 Piercello, you are an absolute godsend. Like you read my mind. I'm awake all night and I started having panic attacks at night the last week and feel like I can't breathe, like someone is choking me to death.

I'll try that. Thank you.

558 Can you take a few days off, L? Just to decompress a bit? A spa day? A two-hour massage?

Having your sleep/wake cycle out of sync with the 9-to-5 world can really suck.

Non-chemical suggestions I can make include:

1). Light reading material including manga and comics. Yes, this is escapism, but separating yourself from your troubles can be necissary at times, and ligh reading material allows you to stop when you want and not require that your brain be engaged too much.

2). Fantasy. Just as long as you don't get lost in it, it can be healthy and allow you to both relax and use your creative abilities. Maybe it is a dream house, or a fantasy world, or an invented language, or whatever. Perhaps it is an online game or even a tabletop game with others. Just be creative.

3). Kith, Kin, and Pets. There is little more comforting than family, friends, and cherished pets. It is also proof that you are loved and needed. Also, while the Horde is more-or-less "friends in a box", there are plenty of us here who do care (P.S. yet again I restate my offer to buy any of the horde a drink if they visit Vegas).

Maybe above all else, exert an existance outside of whatever is causing your concerns or troubles. Do not let that define you, but rather define yourself.

560 Piercello, I actually do something similar to get rid of hiccups. That might work.

No, Chi, I can't. I can take off one day here and there. Wasting time at the blog is probably my biggest luxury bc I can do that and still manage to be productive during the day. I have to get to May 22 and I'd like to get to July 30th now.

562 @559 While I am not anyone's endocrinologist, I can enthusiastically endorse the last suggestion.
Recent medical research suggests that people can repopulate their gut flora beneficially, and change their hormone responses by taking healthy action.
My old neighborhood buddy, Dr. Steve, a healing blood doctor, also teaches meditation.
Our brains have a lot of fatty tissue (it insulates both electrically and thermally, and hormones are temperature-dependent), so you can swap some fats around to your benefit. And to the benefit of those immediate who love you.
L., we need you!

Both #1 and #2 helps. Sometimes obessing over something can help as well, to a degree; it can help organize one's thought and plan out a plan of action.

But even then one has to step back. When I was in Grad school, I was in the "slump" after passing my "advancement to candidacy" exam, when chemical reactions just weren't working. I read a chapter each night before bed of a book about the number phi. It got me through the period of bad results as I kept on trying... to the point where I ended up succeeding (and getting a few papers published). There are some other books that got me through crappy times. They sustained me and nourished my soul such that I could endure.

Find something to clear your mind, if even for an hour.

When I was turning 40, I had decided that I hated my current doctor....so I started talking to people. The dental hygienist at the predecessor of my current dentist recommended my guy.

I'd gone to him a while (and he'd gotten my sleep apnea problem under control), when I happened to meet the retired managing partner of the accounting firm where I was employed when I first moved to northern California in the waiting room. He'd moved out of the area but drove 100+ miles back for checkups with my doc.

Much as the insurance companies and politicians want to hide the ones with talent....they're out there.

The nice thing is I don't bother reading daywalker comments, just the post so I have a life and actually get things done. I actually like it this way because I do that to the ONT to, especially the really long ones although I do make an effort to read the first couple of hundred.

I do not miss any of the internecine fighting evidently present on the day threads. I will not even mention who I am voting for but he's a conservative and that's just my choice.
