Two Outlets In One: CNN Runs Editorial Calling Oregon Park Takeover "Terrorism," But Has Previously Run Positive Editorials on Occupy Wall Street

Gee, I wonder what could account for CNN's wildly-inconsistent editorial views.

The protest is spurred by wildly-inappropriate sentencing by the government -- hey, isn't the left always screaming about that, when it comes to their pet causes and members of their coalition?

PS: "Two Outlets in One," or something like that, is a James Taranto daily item. (Or nearly daily.)

13 CNN's obvious idiocy aside, and the hypocritical nature of the Propaganda Press generally, there is one aspect of this Oregon event that bugs me. Taking up arms against the government is serious stuff, and should be reserved for big deal events.

This Oregon protest (which the victims of government abuse themselves have condemned) should be very public civil disobedience on a protest level, like a court sit-in or an occupation of the prosecutors office, and not a gun-wielding occupation of a remote building.

It sounds so nice and clinical that way. Hey, you can't be mad at a punishment that "exists on the books," right?

Okay, now go back and edit it:

The sentencing wasn't inappropriate for someone saving their own property when the government could or would not, they were hit with the mandatory minimum for saving their own property when the government could or would not, which is exactly what the parties pled to because the federal government has deeper pockets than they do. The judge took a flier on ignoring minimum sentencing guidelines for saving one's own property when the government could or would not based on his own criteria. While I agree that 5 years is waaaay too much under the circumstances for saving one's own property when the government could or would not, it was within the law as it exists on the books.

Attorney General Eric Holder was 'armed' when he took part in protest at Columbia and occupied an military office for five days.

As a college student, Eric Holder participated in a protest where dozens took over an "empty office space" (i.e. building owned by the US Army) in hopes of turning it into a black student lounge.

Unearthed archives claim that the protestors were 'armed' during the raid.

63 So I went to goggle the Wild Life Refuge Headquarters building and it looks like a nice modern stone building with lots of glass; a nice visitor's center for the Refuge.

And I thought to myself, it would be easy to jimmy the door, but that would be a crime, breaking and entering, which is different from going into an open office and refusing to leave (sit in protest).

So I said to myself, what if they are only out in the parking lot, and not in the building, and they have registered at the campground, and no crime has been committed? They're just trolling the news media.

Has anyone actually gone there and looked? One report said they protestors had the road blocked; moose out front should have told you, park's closed.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Just since Obama has been in office, the EPA has been leaning on farmers about dust from plowing, requiring ridiculous regulations of dairy farms for storage of milk (treating it as oil...), blocking off public lands so the law can't even chase criminals into the area, it goes on and on.

And for decades, westerners have been getting increasingly angry about how much land the federal government keeps gobbling up. Now Obama wants to seize 2.5 million more acres for a wilderness area in Malheur and Harney counties.

This is like a steam kettle that keeps building up. There's a lot of anger and frustration in rural areas, especially the west.

What most people forget is the reason for mandatory sentencing is that judges were letting murders, rapists, etc. off with a slap on the wrist.

102 This reminds me of a scene that took place during the disputed Florida recount in the aftermath of the 2000 election. There were some Democrat hacks that tried to do something sneaky in a room behind a locked door, but the Republicans on the scene tried to stop them by banging on the door, and a mild "commotion" ensued. The media was having a field day calling it a "Republican Riot." This is how they operate. Thy hesitate to call something terrorism when there are dead bodies around, but let some white guys engage in a tense situation--and it's "terrorism."

"A number of ranchers at the top of the mountain traded their BLM permits and private property for land on the valley floor, allowing the anti-grazing groups to create a 170,000 acre wilderness, with almost 100,000 acres being "cow-free."

"The last holdouts on that cow-free wilderness were the Hammonds," explained Maupin. And because the Hammonds have large chunks of private property in the heart of the cooperative management area, they carried a target on their backs.

"It's become more and more obvious over the years that that the BLM and the wildlife refuge want that ranch. It would tie in with what they have," said Inglis.

The Hammonds also lost their ability to water cattle on one BLM permit when refuge personnel drained a watering hole that the Hammonds had always used."

153 More:

"In the Hammonds' plea agreement in the 2012 trial, the BLM obtained the first right of refusal should the family have to sell their land and BLM leases, Maupin added.

The Maupins themselves had a small lease that also bordered the "cow-free wilderness" and the Oregon Natural Desert Association was "relentless in their pursuit to have us off, in order to expand the cow-free wilderness," Maupin said. The group would criticize the ranchers' water usage, causing them to pipe water to their cattle, which in turn instigated more complaints from the group.

Eventually the Maupins sold their permit and moved.

But the Hammonds remained."

They likely didn't know about it until the DOJ decided to get involved to push for more and more. The point? Well, why don't you go see what they say their stated point is and get back to me.

How will it help? We're talking about it, aren't we? Before this happened how many people knew about the Hammonds?

The government is, essentially, throwing two men in jail for resisting their attempts to steal the family's land. If that's not a BFD, I don't know what is.

183 I know this ... if I served three months in a Federal cage, and after release a judge said "so sorry, you owe another four years" ... I damn sure wouldn't go back alive.

History is complicated, when you read all the little details. The heroes are rarely angelic, the villains rarely demonic.

And so we have this. A sketchy situation with people spoiling for a fight against a tyranny dying to drop the hammer - over two guys too tired to defend themselves.

I say ... doesn't matter. Waiting for the "perfect time" to stand up is just another excuse to sit.

If it doesn't go Waco here - it will somewhere else in the next year. Barry insists on it. But he doesn't know what he's signing up for in the bargain.

186 I really believe these guys in Oregon are going about this the wrong way and making some stupid comments which the liberal media is running with. Just because these guys have guns is all the progressive media needs to make it into something it very well may not be.

From what I've read about the main incident it appears to be a federal govt. and bureaucrats gone mad. I haven't heard anyone from the lib media talk about this at all or about the recent federal prisoners Obama has had released due to his belief the sentences were to harsh. Maybe he should step in and let the two ranchers off with time served already and keep them out of prison. If Obummbler were to do that it may end this whole mess, but, being the community agitator he is, I wouldn't doubt he's hoping this incident escalates.

Yup. Though let's not forget they're throwing the two Hammonds in jail...AGAIN, after being mad the prior judge only give them 9mo and 12mo respectively (which they already served). It's such utter BS and the BLM is showing once again why many of their employees need to be hung, the whole long sorted affair is just one story of so many that have and are ongoing.

If the Republicans had any brains, they would have a bill to do this on the floor of Congress this week.

211 It's obviously not terrorism for several reasons.

For one, the target is not the civilian population but is specifically the federal government.

It's stupid and it's armed insurrection. Or open rebellion.

It's not comparable to occupy wall street because the word "occupy" was figurative in that sense whereas here, it's literal. They are literally occupying this park. It's sort of no longer a protest when you are "willing to kill or be killed."

From my perspective there are two leftist takes on this and neither see them as something to be feared (like a terrorist). They are either ridiculed ("Y'all Qaeda") or used to show a disparity between the (lack of) response by, say, the National Guard compared to the response to recent unarmed protesters in other places.

This whole thing is a bad look for you guys.
