Don't Even Say It! - Niedermeyer's Dead Horse

I've spent the last hour or so strolling through memory lane, looking for the optimism that has escaped me lately. Generally, I'm feeling good about my life, but I'm not feeling good about US, collectively.

So, off to You Tube I went and I landed, naturally, at a slew of Reagan videos: Just what I needed to drift back to the days when our countrymen felt safe in the hands of a competent, secure, genuinely confident leader.

The first video I landed on addressed the PATCO strike. In it, President Reagan, Drew Lewis, and William French Smith spoke as a united chorus, and in no uncertain terms, to the illegality of the strike. When asked by a reporter about resorting to "lesser action" against the striking ATCs, Reagan seemed, for a fraction of a second, caught off guard by the notion that the full weight of the law should not be brought to bear.

*Sidenote: Why do Lewis and Smith sound like the cast of Dragnet?

Next I watched Reagan's remarks regarding the "crime against humanity" that was the "massacre" of 269 innocent men, women, and children. There was no soft language here in describing the murder by the Soviet Union of all aboard KAL flight 007. There was no second-guessing as to whether our own plane might have triggered a legitimate alert. There was no self-loathing on display nor an eagerness to forgive.

The Washington Post, unsurprisingly, in 2014, dredged up this speech in an attempt to justify Obama's own weak-wristed response to Putin.

Sure! Reagan sounded tough, but did he stop grain exports to the Soviets?!

It's as if because Reagan didn't do everything, Obama is excused from doing anything, including speaking to the nation in clear and precise language about the atrocity and by whom it was committed. As you might expect, George Will makes an appearance in that article.

Still, you listen to this and say that this was not a man who was born to lead.

In 74 days I will have to go to the precinct and cast a ballot for one of the many assholes who's presently running for office. For some of you the *pull the band-aid off* moment will come even sooner.

Not one of the candidates running for the most important office in the world, at a most crucial time in our history, inspires me in the least. I am flabbergasted by those who are utterly committed to one candidate or another and who are loud and proud in their support of him or her.

Really?!

*tilts head to the side*

Nonetheless, I am impressed by your ability to commit and perhaps I am the wuss for only, kinda sorta, liking a candidate that has little chance at winning the nomination. Still....

Still!

Do NOT attempt to persuade me that any one of them is next next Reagan. Don't try to draw parallels to his leadership style, his manner of speaking, his background, or his sense of humor.

Just. Don't.

Soon enough we will be forced to make a choice and it will be hard enough without the constant reminders of exactly who we AREN'T voting for.

Your thoughts?

5 President Obama is the unReagan, the charismatic, popular leader who is like bizarro Reagan, opposite of him in every way. He makes the economy worse, people less happy, the outlook more miserable, the country weaker and more mocked, reduces safety, and so on.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. We need strong, capable, dynamic, and honorable leaders now more than at any time since the nation's founding and what we have is just... disappointing, at best. I had hopes that either Walker or Perry mark II with the glasses could be that but no.

38 Just keep in mind that Reagan was not REAGAN in 1980. Some saw the greatness (a minority), some who see him now as Ronaldus Magnus (myself included) did not see THAT in 1980, a large number saw some guy who just HAD to be better than Carter, so I guess I'll vote for him, a huge number saw a guy who once was in a movie with a chimp and what the hell was wrong with America if this is the best we can do, etc etc.

No one sees a President as a Titan until all is said and done. It is virtually impossible to do so. Abraham Lincoln very VERY much included in that category. Just check the media of that day.

Just a perspective to keep in mind.

52 Remembering the darned-near hysteria when Reagan first ran (1976?). Mom was a regular republican and was having conniptions at the splitting of the party. Dad, just as much an old regular republication, was laughing like a crazy at the disruption. They came back from Illinois convention with such different views it is still funny to remember. Back in the 1970s, Reagan was a worse loser/revolutionary than Goldwater.

I laugh every time the GOPe squalls about loyalty because I remember how much they have shown historically. Trump doesn't bother me much -- and I enjoy the pearl-clutching. Cruz is my pick for the long haul -- just as back in the late 70s when being impressed by Reagan was crazed.

One thing I want to remind everyone: classical liberals are still out here and there and resent cooption of the descriptor 'liberal' by fascists.

I remember her going on about, "Oh, the things that awful Riggins man said about President Carter."

82 The Great Reagan Kennedy Debate

In 1967, then Gov. Ronald Reagan and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy appeared on a trans-Atlantic broadcast with students/Communist plants called "Town Meeting of the World".

Reagan was on point and clearly well informed. RFK was equivocating and weak.

85 I remember the carter election vaguely, as a grade schooler. The morning they announced the election (the day after the vote, counting was slower back then and by God it was better for the country to not get instant info), my hippy dippy teacher had the TV on and was watching. She was so happy, all of the teachers were celebrating when Jimmy won.

I remember thinking that was very improper at school. I didn't know why but it didn't feel right to me, to be so openly partisan and wasting time at school watching election results.

Reagan is not my hero. I was always embarrassed with an actor as president. He did not move me the way he moved you. I recall him sounding silly to me when he first ran banging on about NOT returning Panama Canal to Panama because they are too unreliable and that occurring around the time Hong Kong was returned to China. I knew of him only that he played in a movie with a monkey.

I am not rejecting your view. I'm saying I never did have or share anything remote to conservative political faith. Reagan videos cannot revive anything for me. That space is empty.

Risking getting into trouble, Trump is the most Reaganesque candidate we've had since... Reagan himself.

I remember Reagan. I was a lil kid in the '80s and just loved him. I was a baby just learning to talk when he was running. Reagan famously told a heckler to "shut up" and I used to quote him. My mom would say to me, "What does Reagan say?" And I'd reply, "Shut up!" LOL My parents weren't all that political back then, but I love that story of how Reagan captured people's attention. I cried the day Reagan had to leave office and remember writing it in my journal... I was eight. He was like the country's beloved grandfather. His being at the helm makes it fun to remember the '80s, we were safe and classy back then. Those were the days of glitzy Liza Minelli, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis, Jr concerts on tv. I just remember the whole decade being sparkly and successful. Now that I'm an adult, I've done plenty of studying on the man and now I know why I loved him even when I was too young to now why.

They loved him either for no real reason or they loved him because he said he was going to ruin everything. Trump's crowd, otoh, are a bunch of America-loving patriots. His supporters are not lo-fo. We love this country and what it USED to stand for (in a thread nostalgic for the '80s...). We have done our research into the leaders of the GOP and are sickened by how they betray us. Trump is the only one who is not beholden to them. Trump has actual America-saving policies, he is not a blank slate we are casting our hopes on. We have solid reasons for supporting him. What Pinochet figured out was that to pull off the take over of Chile, you not only had to take down the government leaders, but also all the "thought leaders" who provided the civilian support for Allende's attempt to make Chile to Communist.

He didn' kill everyone over his entire rule, but all up front. While the torture is deplorable, if you are going to take over and purge your country of Communists and their ild, then you're gonna have to kill people.

That couldn't happen here, in part because the military wouldn't overthrow the civilian authorities, but also because they'd have to kill civilians. That the number of peole who'd throats we'd have to slit is far, far more than in Chile, is another reason why it wouldn't happen. We'd have to take out: Federal, state, and local bureaucrats; most of the entertainment (Hollywood, TV, &c) industry, tech leaders, a large percentage of college Professors, all the high level SJWs, &c.

194 Our current Presidential choices are a direct result of decades of Progressive domination of the US School system...

The Dept. of Education, was passed into law under Carter, but actually opened its doors under Reagan.

IMO Reagan was a good President... but was far from perfect...

Part of that though was that I was USN during those years.... and some of his decisions got friends of mine killed.... for nothing (Beirut 83).. and that situation set the stage for the even more screwed up Middle East we have today.

I will never forget, after the Beirut Bombing... we were there for a couple more months picking up the pieces... and just when we were getting ready to go home.... the Marines and Ships which were supposed to be relieving us off of Lebanon... invaded Grenada...

At the time I heard that... I remember thinking... what the hell are we invading Spain for???

Needless to say... Moral on my ship really really sucked... no one gave a shit about us... and even when we got back to Norfolk on a rainy day... there were no bands... no celebration... just a walk to the end of the pier... because we were victims of the News Cycle... and part of a story they wanted forgotten...

And for the record.... just a couple years ago Declassified Documents showed that within days of the Barracks blast... they KNEW Iran was behind it... but sat on that information... setting the stage for where we are at today...

And they will use one first against a Sunni target, before they ever attack Israel. For all their genocidal talk, they KNOW that Israel has nukes and will fire back.

I was a 20-year old college student when I proudly pulled the lever for Carter in 1980. I trusted the media and believed the bunkum that Reagan would lead us into war.

The thing that amazes me when I reflect back on my early political beliefs is that, while I considered myself a liberal Democrat, virtually every position I held would be considered rock-solid conservative today. That's how much the Democrats have changed since 1980.

I just finished reading "The Profession" by Steven Pressfield last week. You should read this, too.

Pressfield (Gates of Fire, Tides of War, The Legend of Bagger Vance) sets this novel in 2032, with plenty of flashbacks to explain what has happened in the last +20 years.

It's not pretty, but is one possible outcome. One thing he did not predict was the fracking revolution in the US.

Pizza stones are terrific on the grill. I was slow to adopt that method, but it's superior and the only one I use now.

You don't need a peel. Just cut a circle of parchment paper about the size of the stone, leaving one or two "tabs" of paper that you can use to pull the pizza & paper onto the pre-heated stone. Cooks fast. Then pull the pizza off (or use spatulas).

Meanwhile, a "militia" including one of the guys from Ruby Ridge (rumors here, so I can't be sure) has supposedly taken over a government building in Malheur County.

This may be related to the Obama plan to turn a huge chunk of Malheur and Harney counties (2.5 million acres) into a national monument, taking away grazing land from ranchers. There's even been talk of Malheur leaving Oregon to become part of Idaho, because the people down there are so sick of the government of the state.

532 I've become a one-issue voter, and the issue is immigration. Trump is the only one who has promised to build the wall, and even given some construction specs on it, so he's my man. He's also talked about not just reducing the deficit, but eliminating it and starting to pay down the debt. No one else is even thinking such things.

Trump is a Hail Mary pass for me. If he does at least some of the things he talks about, we have a chance. If not, it's over. There will never be another conservative president. The coup isn't going to happen. There is no one on our side. It's their country now.

In retrospect, we lost the culture war when Johnny Carson started telling pot jokes. That was 1976 or so. Some years go by, and people suggest that people like me who have never taken illegal drugs are - well, not normal. Fast forward to the present, and people tell me that if I don't believe people of the same sex should marry, and if I don't believe that Bruce Jenner is a woman, and if I prefer the company of people who resemble me, then I'm hateful and evil, and there is no place for me in this society.

They're right. This isn't my country anymore. I grew up in the 1960's when people were convinced we were heading to the stars, and it was just a matter of time. The future was bright. But instead it slowly collapsed into a computerized dystopia, more immoral, decadent and trivial every year, moving "progressively" toward the dismantling of every human and western institution. We took a very wrong road, and we aren't in a place I ever imagined we'd be.

This is our last chance.

A blog comment is too short of a space to make this argument, but the biggest reason why no Muslim country will ever nuke Israel is because they don't want to contaminate their holy city, Jerusalem, with radioactivity.

Mahdism is strong in every Muslim country, as much in Sunni countries as in Shia countries. Belief in the imminent coming (or return) of the Mahdi, or Muslim Messiah, is the dominant belief in the Islamic world and no country wants to hand over a radioactive Jerusalem to the Mahdi.

570 A blog comment is too short of a space to make this argument, but the biggest reason why no Muslim country will ever nuke Israel is because they don't want to contaminate their holy city, Jerusalem, with radioactivity.

Interesting argument.

My go-to book on Islamic Apocalyptic is (still) David Cook's book helpfully titled "Studies in Muslim Apocalyptic". You are right that Sunni apocalyptic - as well as Shi'a - holds Jerusalem as holy: Muhammad's bones will be moved to it, Jesus will return to it, the Ka'ba will be moved to it and on and on.

The caliph 'Abd al-Malik himself tried to move the Prophet's pulpit to a mosque near the Dome of the Rock.

But, the Hadith being what it is, there are interpretations of this or that. There's hadiths that predict the destruction of "Rome" (Byzantium) in retaliation for the destruction of Jerusalem. In the 600s AD this meant one thing. Now?

- Now, maybe it's a prediction that Jerusalem *should* get nuked - so that the Muslims will rally to conquer Rome (the real Rome).

If so then why did it hit Reagan in his underarm instead of his waist? Since then no President has had a VP that is more popular with the license-to-kill agencies than the President himself. I would suggest Trump continue that policy.

649 Reagans don't come around every cycle. If they did, we'd be living in a much better world than the one we're in. Odds are that we'll never see his like again, at least in public office.

I'm still solidly for Trump. He's despised by the media, Establishment Quislings, and the Democrats. It's been said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, and as far as I see it, he's got all the right enemies. He risks the ire of the PC crowd by making firm statements, and he doesn't just try to play nice with a hostile media like everyone else.

He's no Reagan, but he's a credible candidate in a field of wimps and sellouts. Unless you've got a cloning machine, we're not going to get a better candidate.
