Retired President Decides to Run Her Mouth While, Get This, On Vacation

She says she'll start calling Trump out or something.

In addition, she says she has a single question for 2016 candidates: "why do you want to do this?”

I suppose this is her way to draw attention to herself, and suggest that unlike these other narcissists, she's a selfless heroine who cares only for the commonweal.

Oh, and being popular.

I also remember how hinky the "released" document was. How it was impossible to reconcile with previously stated instances of Hawaii state procedure in such matters. And how there was a later crash of inter-island plane service where the Hawaiian state official who directly oversaw the "release" was the sole fatality. Ahem! Tragic sole fatality. Cue music.

One wonders whether we are going to eventually learn some hidden history decades from now, once the palace-guard journalistas and editorialistas who have protected The Precious so assiduously will have themselves retired. We certainly got a big ole dose of that with regard to Kennedy's private life and personal secrets.

I have previously posted that immediately after receiving the nomination, whoever the nominee is should convene a task force of people to start going through every executive order, memorandum, policy letter, side agreement, etc. issued by the White House over the past 7 years with a view toward deciding what to keep, with the presumption being that on Inauguration Day, before even going to the balls, the new President signs an order repealing and repudiating everything else. Probably about the same time he gets the nuclear codes. Then, as Cabinet secretaries and independent agency heads are nominated, they should start doing the same, so that on the day they are confirmed, they can repeal and repudiate everything their departments and agencies have published over the previous 8 years. Then they can start working on the regulations that require notice and comment. Those will take a few years of litigation to get repealed, but they can be suspended while the litigation is in process. It is going to take most of the first term just to undo the damage. Hopefully Congress can be doing the same thing in parallel with the laws, starting with amending the Clean Air Act to state that CO2 is not a pollutant.

Eight trillion bucks tacked on to the national debt? A colossal geopolitical destabilization of the Middle East, *and* Europe, *and* the South China Sea? A federal judiciary packed with outright radicals in black robes and with lifetime tenure? (And don't think Ruth Baader-Meinhof won't leave next year. She will. In time for Obama to nominate, and for the Senate Republicans to meekly confirm, a hard-left successor young enough to serve another 60 years.)

Consider also that prior to Obama, we had twenty years of underfunded military recapitalization, coasting on Reagan's huge investments in Cold War defense in the 1980s. Poppy Bush fought GW1 instead of buying dot-mil hardware. Clinton slashed procurement further to produce a "peace dividend" and the famous but briefly lived balanced budget. Dubya Bush directed Pentagon recap funding to the grand crusade to transmogrify Fallujah into Fresno.

Then Obama came in and *really* started screwing up defense procurement. The icing on the cake. To where it is little realized that we have a massive national crisis presenting itself in systems shortfalls, and it's only going to get worse every fiscal year through 2030. We already don't have enough ships or planes today. Not enough training, sailing and flying hours either.

200 Typical of his generation. Tell us a little about him. How old was he? Where did he serve?

91 yrs old. Served in ETO pretty much following the invasion through Belgium to Remagen. He was on a Bofor gun that covered the rear of Infantry. The Bofor is a 40mm antiaircraft gun, for those who do not know, they took off of ships and put wheels on with, I think a 5 round clip. Pretty bad motorscooter to be fired into troops. He always told me about a forest he went through where the tops of the entire forest were gone. That turned out to be the Hurtgen forest, was on his way to Bastille when Patton stopped them and took all of their fuel, etc. All this history around him and he never knew what it meant until he was much older. Very cool stuff to me.

I was re-watching "Alien" last night - and not because it has a young and shapely Sigourney Weaver peeling down to her space-skivvies; every frame of that is captured and saved in a slow-mo "bunk" file, you perverts - and a question occurred to me.

If the damned ship has "Mother" and a decent navigational system - which it does - just why the Hell does it have a human crew, who require to be kept in stasis and then be awakened to bicker over shares, and all the rest of it? And has anyone considered that Weyland-Yutani assumes a terrible liability having them onboard? I mean, you gotta assume they have to carry insurance on the ship, the cargo, which can't be cheap, and then six humans and a very costly robot, too?

Space economics, man. I just don't get it.

Another thing. I've been engaged in this discussion on FB over the last couple of weeks. Do you realize all the things that are going to be named after him? Schools, streets, parks, hell, Hawaii will probably rename Mauna Loa Mauna Obama. Why do you think they're holding off on taking Hamilton off the $10 bill? My only wish, since it's inevitable, is that these Obama memorializations not be in the ghetto. That was the mistake with MLK. They all need to be in places where condescending white liberals live. In fact, conservative city councils, county commissions, nd state legislatures should take the bull by the horns and start renaming stuff in white liberal neighborhoods now. Maybe TFG will show up for the ceremony, which would be an added bonus.

Human crew is because androids - which the ship also had - might not think for themselves to visit this or that strange cranny on the planet. 261 So, since it's an open thread, an open comment that might not make sense....I heard Scott Kelly (I think) was talking about the new astronaut candidate class, and how "these guys are going to Mars", and I thought that sweet, really just sweet, cute even.....because no matter who becomes Prez the GOP is going to stay in control of the House, and the idea that in the next decade Southerners are going to be rewarding NASA (rewarding, mind you) with a new Apollo program and just billions and billions of more money, after it gets made *very* clear the place of Southerners in the scheme of things in the New America (simply because they are Southerners, or conservatives (before even getting to the Christian part of things, because not being one won't save you, in fact nothing will)), well, given that, and it being after the establishment has already thumbed it's nose at an already ticked-off base over immigration (and hence probably won't have a lot of room to surrender on some things)...well, it is all sort of precious, in a way. I mean, I find the naivete touching, simply touching.

Posted by: It's very cold in spaaaaace.... at December 28, 2015 08:46 PM (ez6Am)

262 Space economics, the allocation of scarce resources.

People are cheap, androids still experimental and expensive. Simple slow, industrial hardware, cheap. Self insured, claims rarely paid out by the corporation.

Mother can monitor and perhaps process raw materials into finished product, like crude hydrocarbons into refined products. petroleum supplies exhausted locally thus the demand will pay the shipping costs from distant sources. The vessel might be on a ballistic course perhaps with some simple collision avoidance, but nothing more complicated than that.

The story isn't about economics. It's about space monsters who eat you. And the greedy corporate suits who see money to be made.

"Bad News" was done as one episode for a show on Brit TV called "The Comic Strip". It's free on Hulu last I checked. Sort of a "Spinal Tap" type thing. Then a few seasons later they did a follow up episode where they actually got on stage at a huge outdoor concert and were pelted by beer bottles etc. by the metalhead crowd. Both episodes are actually pretty funny.

272 262 Space economics, the allocation of scarce resources.

366 I'm not sure the hypothetical rebooted Ripley would be anyone we could name. As I recall, the captain was supposed to be the (assumed by the audience) hero and Ripley was a surprise.

Looking at Weaver's imdb page, she has 3 acting credits before Alien, like
"Alvy's Date Outside Theatre
"

So someone comparable would be, I don't know, the third sister in the Pride + Prejudice + Zombies flick.

559 wow. imagine if they don't make the playoffs, because of that.

560 That is absolutely the worst kick I've ever seen McManus make.

Posted by: Old Blue at December 28, 2015 11:24 PM (9iR5/)

561 I was gonna kick the ball
But then I got high
I was set to win this all
But then I got high
Now we're off to OT and I know why
Because I got high because we got high, because we're Mile High

563 NY should legalize drugs, but charge an exorbitant tax, to make up for lost cigarette revenue. And if any rival gangs smuggle in drugs, we should just rub 'em out.

566 This has been a good game. I think both QBs have done a mostly excellent job. All in all, I love games like this.

568 not sure why broncs didn't start out running there.

Posted by: Guy Mohawk at December 28, 2015 11:29 PM (ODxAs)

569 Wait. Are you saying that extortionate tax rates lead to black markets?

That can't be. The idea is to use the tax system to control peoples's behavior.

*Sigh* I guess we'll just have to resort to harsher measures to force them to comply.

570 Looking at Weaver's imdb page, she has 3 acting credits before Alien, like "Alvy's Date Outside Theatre"

I saw her in a Shakespeare in the Park production in Dallas just a year or two before Alien came out. She went from being a nobody to a star pretty quickly.

580 +1 for the dune references. Leftardia s may have oil gasms over it but it predated their current neurosis and has a great world, compellingt philosophy, and of wheels within wheels political machinations.

His father was more surgeon with a scalpel his son uses a sledgehammer blindfolded.

Imagine if the third Harry potter book took place thousand years in the future. Now you would have some idea of what reading the first three dune is like.
