Overnight Open Thread (12-13-2015)

Quote of the Day

Back in the 1980s, when I first heard Christians complain about "secular humanism," I thought they were crazy. To me, a atheist Jewish Democrat, the phrase simply meant an entire absence of faith in the public square - and wasn't that a good thing?

It wasn't until I read Stephen L. Carter's The Culture of Disbelief that I understood that lack of faith is itself a belief system, complete with a doctrine predicated on Big Government, animism, Gaia-ism, the denial of biological reality, and sexual license. Moreover, the Left is using the government itself, as well as government-funded institutions, to enforce this new religion, thereby violating the First Amendment. I therefore wish young Mr. Dorman much luck in rallying the troops - but he's got a long, hard battle ahead of him.

Woo Hoo The Geminid Meteor Shower Is Here

It will peak tonight and tomorrow and should be starting...right about the time you read this. They appear to originate from the constellation Gemini and at their peak will have a meteor per minute on average.

Where do they come from? Well mainly from the asteroid Asteroid 3200 Phaethon which has an orbit that takes it very close to the sun where thermal stress causes pieces of it to crack off and trail behind the asteroid in orbit. When the Earth's orbit takes it through Phaeton's debris we get tonight's meteor shower.

White House Shocked, Mystified by Gun Sales Surge

President Obama's spokesman said Thursday that the record number of Americans seeking to buy guns in recent weeks is "a tragedy" that the White House is at a loss to explain.

"The more that we see this kind of violence on our streets, the more people go out and buy guns," said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. "That is both ironic and tragic."

The FBI conducted 185,345 firearms background checks on Black Friday, the most ever during a single day. The record number of gun sales came two weeks after the Islamic State's terrorist attacks in Paris, but before the terrorist massacre in San Bernardino, California.

Asked why he thinks so many Americans are buying guns, Mr. Earnest replied, "I don't know, I really don't."

Note also how Earnest and Obama conflate law-abiding citizens legally purchasing guns for their individual use with guns just being 'on the street'.

David French on the Hidden Reason Americans Dislike Islam

The standard leftist trope is that anti-Islam feeling is due to ignorance (and racism despite Islam not being a race). But in the 14 years since 9/11 the average American now knows far more about Islam than they did that day and is hardly ignorant about it - especially since 9/11 has required many Americans to have up and close and personal encounters with Islam as it's practiced in Islamic countries. So maybe we actually have good justified reasons for not liking it and aren't just acting out of ignorance.

islamdisliked1

There will be no doubt some hand-wringing about "Islamophobia" and further calls to continue the American elite's fourteen-year track record of whitewashing Islamic beliefs and culture, but I wonder if the media is missing a powerful, largely-uncovered influence on America's hearts and minds - the experience and testimony of the more than two million Americans who've served overseas since 9/11 and have experienced Islamic cultures up-close.

Yes, they were in the middle of a war - but speaking from my own experience - the war was conducted from within a culture that was shockingly broken. I expected the jihadists to be evil, but even I couldn't fathom the depths of their depravity. And it was all occurring against the backdrop of a brutally violent and intolerant culture. Women were beaten almost as an afterthought, there was a near-total lack of empathy for even friends and neighbors, lying was endemic, and sexual abuse was rampant. Even more disturbingly, it seemed that every problem was exacerbated the more religious and pious a person (or village) became.

I spent enough time outside the wire and interacting with tribal leaders to get a sense of the reality around me, but the younger guys on the line spent weeks at a time living in the heart of the local community. I remember one young soldier, after describing the things he'd seen since the start of the deployment, gestured towards the village around us and said - in perfect Army English - "Sir, this s**t is f**ked up."

It is indeed. While it's certainly unfair to judge Indonesia or Malaysia by the standards of Iraq or Afghanistan, it's very hard to shake the power of lived experience, nor should we necessarily try. After all, when we hear stories from Syria, Yemen, Gaza, the Sinai, Libya, Nigeria, Somalia, Mali, Pakistan, and elsewhere they all fit the same depressing template of the American conflict zones. Nor is the dazzlingly wealthy veneer of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, or the other Gulf States all that impressive. Tens of thousands of soldiers have seen the veritable slave labor that toils within the oil empires and have witnessed first-hand their casual disregard for "lesser" life.

But this same experience has caused us to treasure the Muslim friends we do have - in part because we recognize the extreme risks of their loyalty and defiance of jihad. That's why American officers fiercely champion the immigration of local interpreters, even to the point of welcoming them into their own home. That's why there's often an intense connection with our Kurdish allies, the single-most effective ground fighting force against ISIS.

Two million Americans have been downrange, and they've come home and told families and friends stories the media rarely tells. Those stories have an impact, but because of the cultural distance between America's warriors and its media, academic, and political aristocracy, it's an impact the aristocracy hasn't been tracking. Experience trumps idealistic rhetoric, and I can't help but think that polls like YouGov's are at least partly registering the results of a uniquely grim American experience.

Tyler Cowen on Just How Martial of a Country Should the United States Be?

An interesting analysis where he points out that gun control does not exist in a vacuum and is connected to larger national politics and foreign policy.

If you think America can sustain its foreign policy interventionism, or threat of such, without a fairly martial culture at home, by all means make your case.  But I am skeptical.  I think it is far more likely that if you brought about gun control, and the cultural preconditions for successful gun control, America's world role would fundamentally change and America's would no longer play a global policeman role, for better or worse.

The Most PC/Least American Elementary School in the US is...PS 169 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Santa Claus is banned. The Pledge of Allegiance is no longer recited. "Harvest festival" has replaced Thanksgiving, and "winter celebrations" substitute for Christmas parties.

New principal Eujin Jaela Kim has given PS 169 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a politically correct scrub-down, to the dismay of teachers and parents.

"We definitely can't say Christmas, nothing with Christmas on it, nothing with Santa," PTA President Mimi Ferrer said administrators told her. "No angels. We can't even have a star because it can represent a religious system, like the Star of David."

Kim, 33, did not return a call or e-mail seeking comment.

Glenn Greenwald Caught Falsely Smearing PJ Media Over Report That 'No-Fly' Poster Child Was Arrested in Turkey

David Steinberg is far more restrained than I would be but it's an interesting analysis of exactly how Greenwald uses wordplay to dishonestly mislead his readers. Here he carefully responds to a strawman version of what PJM reported and proceeds to tear it apart in a 3000 word screed of righteous anger giving the impression that he's completely contradicted their report. But in fact he never actually contradicted anything they actually reported and that was by deliberate design since he is unable to.

Bill Burr's Epic Rant Against a Philly Audience

This happened at a 2006 Opie and Andy event in Philadelphia where the audience had gotten drunk and rowdy. After they had had heckled and booed the previous two comedians off the stage Bill Burr decided that he wasn't having any of that and proceeded to spend his 12 minute set taking a huge dump on the dumbass audience, their disease-ridden mothers, and their 'one-bridge-having POS city'. A thing of beauty.

56 We had a zero-g sex discussion here the other night.

In weightlessness, you can't "swim" in air like you do in water at all. Not enough reaction mass to push against. Someone floating around can flail about all they want and do very little but look stupid.

Now two people together could push off each other and launch themselves in opposite directions, which is what would likely happen. The vagaries of angular momentum conservation means they likely would get themselves tumbling uncontrollably as well.

It would be fun to develop the proper protocols and techniques, of course.

I actually wonder if it's been tried. Of course, it would be very hush hush, as it is officially verbotten, but women have been on the space station regularly for long stints with men.

Put men and women together, shit happens.

The striking thing with women is the hair. Those with longer hair look awful as the hair just goes wild, floating everywhere.

96 I think acetaminophen is pretty effective for small children with high fevers. There's a fairly predictable, repeatable response to my child taking kids tylenol when she has an extremely high 100+ fever and the fever then going down. As far as other flu symptoms I don't know. But I just concern my self with the temperature. We start with ibuprofen only and then alternate with tylenol if needed.

And regardless of what they say now about not "over" controlling temperature rise during a fever if you've ever had to deal with your child in a febrile seizure from fever you'll damn sure prevent it from happening again. Scared the hell out of us.

Of course, if all the participants want to go is get each other off, there's no need to really go for the thrusting.

With 6 month stints, I'm very sure just about all them have to "let off some steam", by themselves if nothing else. And we don't want any globs of loose bodily fluids floating around. Imagine motoring around and something hits you in the face. What's that? OMG!

There's a funny bit in one of the Apollo mission transcripts which involved some stuff we never heard about. One of the three noticed something floating around in the capsule. Something disgusting. All three then denied it was their own.

Back then, toilet facilities consisted of little more than a plastic bag, and someone had a little accident and let something not get in the bag properly.

"It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes. Distinctions in society will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of education, or of wealth can not be produced by human institutions. In the full enjoyment of the gifts of Heaven and the fruits of superior industry, economy, and virtue, every man is equally entitled to protection by law; but when the laws undertake to add to these natural and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles, gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the potent more powerful, the humble members of society-the farmers, mechanics, and laborers-who have neither the time nor the means of securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the injustice of their Government. There are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine itself to equal protection, and, as Heaven does its rains, shower its favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and the poor, it would be an unqualified blessing. In the act before me there seems to be a wide and unnecessary departure from these just principles.

Nor is our Government to be maintained or our Union preserved by invasions of the rights and powers of the several States. In thus attempting to make our General Government strong we make it weak. Its true strength consists in leaving individuals and States as much as possible to themselves-in making itself felt, not in its power, but in its beneficence; not in its control, but in its protection; not in binding the States more closely to the center, but leaving each to move unobstructed in its proper orbit.

Experience should teach us wisdom. Most of the difficulties our Government now encounters and most of the dangers which impend over our Union have sprung from an abandonment of the legitimate objects of Government by our national legislation, and the adoption of such principles as are embodied in this act. Many of our rich men have not been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought us to make them richer by act of Congress. By attempting to gratify their desires we have in the results of our legislation arrayed section against section, interest against interest, and man against man, in a fearful commotion which threatens to shake the foundations of our Union. It is time to pause in our career to review our principles, and if possible revive that devoted patriotism and spirit of compromise which distinguished the sages of the Revolution and the fathers of our Union. If we can not at once, in justice to interests vested under improvident legislation, make our Government what it ought to be, we can at least take a stand against all new grants of monopolies and exclusive privileges, against any prostitution of our Government to the advancement of the few at the expense of the many, and in favor of compromise and gradual reform in our code of laws and system of political economy.

I have now done my duty to my country. If sustained by my fellow citizens, I shall be grateful and happy; if not, I shall find in the motives which impel me ample grounds for contentment and peace. In the difficulties which surround us and the dangers which threaten our institutions there is cause for neither dismay nor alarm. For relief and deliverance let us firmly rely on that kind Providence which I am sure watches with peculiar care over the destinies of our Republic, and on the intelligence and wisdom of our countrymen. Through His abundant goodness and heir patriotic devotion our liberty and Union will be preserved."

180 Philadelphia Dec 12, 1984

When the quarter ended, Referee Jess Kersey conferred with Erving and Bird, the team captains, in an attempt to prevent any problems.

He should have also talked to one of the dozen or so men dressed as Santa Claus who were in attendance for a Sixers promotion. With 11 seconds left, several Santas standing in an aisle began fighting with fans, some of whose views had been blocked. Security guards had to escort the Santas out of the arena.

And to all a good night

At least up here in the leftist Northeast, those of us who know the truth about Islam are treated as paranoid Cassandras at best, racist hypocrite Islamophobes at worst who want to help Trump round up all the brown people and send them to camps. They basically react to any criticism of Islam as Ben Affleck did on he Bill Maher show, when Maher, in a rare moment of clarity, noted that Islam actually does the things that most libs accuse the Christians of wanting to do.

191 Jesse Walker argues in Reason that the Klan in 1924 was completing the move from a Southern "overwhelmingly rural, fundamentalist" setting to the cities and other regions. "The Klan controlled the governments of Indiana, Oregon, and Colorado, elected other politicians across the country, and played a major role in the Democratic convention of 1924; its members included future president Harry Truman and future Supreme Court justice Hugo Black. It reinvented itself as an "anti-Catholic" movement "largely concerned with enforcing an authoritarian moral order" based on pseudo-scientific theories like eugenics.

192 Hmmm, just looking at some of the latest, it seems that sperm counts (at least in rats) drop dramatically in zero-g and ovaries get messed up as well.

Something also interesting is the miscarriage rate among women who've been in space is much higher than normal, but they can't really pin it down on the space/weightlessness exposure.

Basically, everything we're learning shows that zero-g is very bad for us. Not just zero-g, but anything different from 1g +/- some small tolerance.

1g has been the background against which life has developed here for billions of years. It's a basic "given" to everything, and changing it does all sorts of things.

Until we make up our minds that

1. Islam is at war with the world
2. Islam wants to kill any disbelievers and their assistants.

5. The ones that believe in Islam are dangerous and homicidal
6. Their numbers are large enough for them to be a concern
7. That concern is great enough to desire Muslims to be isolated
8. That necessary isolation is important enough to send soldiers or police to accomplish
9. We will spend money to make that happen.

Not as nushelly but here goes: Islam needs to die.

I believe that the Government won't take action until the man in the street does and then only to restrain the man in the street.

We will then be forced into a Civil War with the common man against the government protecting the Muslims.

It will be very ugly and very messy. The country will never be the same again unless someone takes charge and stops any further invasion by those who's very being is inimical to the Constitution or to any peaceful prosperous life.

336 So. Totally off topic, sort of. I recently joined the Denver Astronomical Society, and in an effort to start interacting with people who actually know what they are doing, I have recently started volunteering to do Star Parties for people who request the DAS do a presentation.
Thursday I went to a presentation, but we couldn't deploy our telescopes due to the weather, but we still set them up in the meeting room for the students and their parents. After we did the presentation, we had a lot of kids come up and ask questions about our equipment, stars, planets and all sorts of things. I'm still a rank amateur, but I answered as best I could.
Tonight I did another presentation with another more experienced astronomer and it was great. Clear skies, and a good crowd of kids and adults. I even got to see a couple of things I'd never seen before with my telescope thanks to the more experienced member.
I had a blast. Didn't see any of the Geminid meteors though. Did see my first double star.

338 Absolute zero is impossible, but would you believe that *negative* absolute temperature is possible? Yes. They actually achieved negative temperature in an experiment. :-)

Ponder that a while. Actually, negative temperature is a quantum phenomenon, a condition that is impossible classically. That is to say, what we think of as "temperature" in macroscopic experience is impossible to be negative.

But some quantum tricks make it possible. Basically, it's a relationship where temperature has a mathematical definition, a statistical one, and quantum weirdness turns that definition on it's head.

Actually, negative temperature is more "hotter than infinitely hot", than colder than absolute zero, but this is just word games you can play from the equations.

345 no, negative temperature is not possible.
people only get "negative temperature" by applying an equilibrium thermodynamic model to a nonequilibrium system.
Yes you can get population inversions, and if you apply the boltzmann distribution to a population inversion you get a "negative temperature" but those are not equilibrium systems.
so the whole "negative temperature" stuff is crap.

---------
Sort of like one electron can be in two places at the same time, or how the spin of one electron can affect the spin of another electron separated by a large distance. Or how an electron can exhibit a wave function at one time, but a particle function another time and that the difference between the two functions is actually the act of observing the function. That kind of quantum weirdness?

350 Not to brag, but myself and my lovely wife were present for Burr's rant. We were guests of Vos, who emceed the whole event. We were backstage, drinking premium tequila at a makeshift bar (which was a rental truck, pulled up to a loading dock in the rear of the Tweeter Center). When Burr went on, we gathered stage left, near the bank of monitors... me, my wife, Opie, Anthony, a couple others who were on the bill... and we knew, when Burr shifted into high gear, that we were watching something historical. I was the first to greet Burr when he came offstage, down the chute. He was dazed. I said, "Man! That was historical!" He didn't really acknowledge me. We knew something was up, because the crowd was giving shit to some acts that they shouldn't have. Burr put a stop to all that shit.

3. Many Muslims believe in Islam
4. Many Muslims do not believe in Islam but will go along
5. The ones that believe in Islam are dangerous and homicidal

8. That necessary isolation is important enough to send soldiers or police to accomplish

Not at all. The 2nd law of thermodynamics states that a closed system increases in entropy UNLESS outside energy is introduced. Of course, adding energy is no guarantee of lowering entropy, but not having any energy to add is a guarantee of increasing entropy over time.

Only systems that have new energy being introduced can lower entropy over time.

The Bad:
I tried to take Mom out for lunch. Everywhere we decided to go was closed on Sunday. Couldn't even find a hot dog joint to sit down in. Then, we decided on an old friend's sub shop nearby as a last ditch effort. Not only was he closed, but there was a "for lease" sign in the window. And I can't find a good phone number for him anywhere - 30 fucking years, and now gone...

The Ugly:
Almost got into a knock-down, drag-out scrapper with my brother today. It was bad. Stupid bad. Bad enough that people cried. Mom, sis, nieces, baby, etc..
I've never done that. I'm embarassed. He deserved to be beaten into a pile of pulp, but probably not in front of Mom. Hell, he's needed that shit for quite a while now, I was just kind of waiting for the chance to do it privately. He wanted to make it public, though.

413 The way I have always understood it:

The Boltzmann distribution can be used as a definition of temperature when everything is at thermal equilibrium *and there are no external forces*. (Generally gravity is neglected.)

When that is the case, then you have the normal relationships of thermodynamics.

But when you apply external forces such as a strong magnetic field, then the Boltzmann distribution no longer applies. So if you apply the Boltzmann distribution to such a system even if it is at equilibrium *under the influence of a field*, you will get seemingly absurd results like "negative temperature".

That is because the wrong model is being applied to the system, not because the system actually does have negative temperature.

When there is a population inversion due to the presence of a strong field such as a magnetic field, the system still has a finite positive temperature. That temperature would be attributed from the average kinetic energy that is derived from the statistical mechanical partition function *most appropriate for that system*.

I will confess that this is not my area of strength, but I'm pretty confident that the temperature, as a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of a system, will always be a positive finite number, and never negative, not even for a quantum system.

That is how I understand things anyway.

415 Generally gravity is neglected
----------
Isn't it interesting that gravity is such a weak force until you apply it to mass. I had this odd thought the other night. I have mass, therefore I have gravity. Plop me into deep space where nothing is around and I could actually bend light around my mass. Probably not by enough to measure, but I could.
Drop me into a nebulae with a lot of dust and gas, and I could become the center of a star. My mass, over time, would attract enough gas and dust to become the heart of a star.

417 G'night everyone.

Posted by: Blanco Basura at December 14, 2015 01:59 AM (YJmuy)

418 It's not absurd, it's just putting a system under conditions that are beyond the box, so to speak. Note that negative temperature is not "colder than coldest" but "hotter than hot". Heat will flow from a negative temperature system to a positive temperature one.

The trick is you create a system that has a maximum energy possible and you have a finite number of possible states. In the normal world, there are an infinite number of states, and one never can get to the point where temperature flips to negative.

But in these special systems, you can. You reach a point of maximum entropy, statistically defined. Adding more energy *reduces* the entropy of the system. IOW, the system becomes "more ordered" as you add energy. At that point, dS/dQ becomes negative. This is inverse temperature.

Thus the transition to negative temperature is like, in a normal system, getting to infinite temperature, then getting hotter. WIth an infinite number of states, you can't do it, but when you have a finite number, you can.

That's all it is.

You can say it's meaningless, that under those conditions, the definition of temperature being used in no longer acceptable or something. But that definition works, and acts just like a negative absolute temperature.

Well, with "willow-like" precision, looks like I missed the person I was addressing a comment to. So signing off and heading to some reading.

The Goebbels bio is getting pretty good. Though I'll have to consult a different sourceto better explain the chaos that led to Hitler's appointment as chancellor by Hindenburg. The bio mostly builds itself around Goebbels'diary entries, andthe maneuvering among the players that led to Hitler's appointment is pretty dizzying when recounted in condensed form.

Still hungry for the wood-grilled steak though.

Damn, that was a helluva speech. Too bad we don't hear stuff like that anymore.

It's thick, but it's chewy.

BTW -- when I was born, copyrights required that you mark the work with the date of publication and continued for 28 years, which could be extended by another 28 years if you bothered, under the Copyright Act of 1909, which was just over 50 years old at the time.

Well, I'm now just over 50 years old. During my lifetime, the Copyright Act of 1976 removed "publication" from being an issue, eliminated the marking requirement, and punted expiration until 50 years after an author's death (or 75 years after the creation of an anonymous work). The Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 extended this to the life of the author plus 70 years, 95 years from publication of corporate or anonymous works, or 120 years from creation for corporate or anonymous works.

Something copyrightable that was created on my birthday should have been in the public domain within 30 years. When I was in my teens, it got kicked out to 50 years + lifespan -- same work. When I was in my 30s, it got kicked out to 70 years + lifespan -- same work, still created on my birthday.

To understand how outrageous this is, you have to delve into the nature of copyright (or patent, they're very similar).

Here is the basic deal -- you create something worthwhile that can be copied. You can (1) keep it secret, and maintain that secret through your own security and contractual obligations [Note -- this is "Trade Secret" law]; or (2) disclose it fully, so that any idiot could copy it, in return for a period of government protection. After that period, any idiot can copy it freely [Patent or copyright]. There is a yin and a yang -- the full force and power of the government is at your beck-and-call during the term of your deal.....but you get nothing the day after.

This was completely understood between 1909 and 1976. The day a 1960 copyright was extended from 1988 to (a minimum of, assuming the artist died immediately afterward) 2010, you are clearly in "but when the laws undertake to add to these natural and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles, gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the potent more powerful" territory.

There's a lot to unpack in Jackson's words.

433 OK, since all the cool kids have gone to bed, I have a long, funny story.
Or, a boring story that is funny to me (and maybe one old guy here).

You know that old toy that your dog won't give up? That one stinky thing that always shows up like a bad penny?
Well, here, it was a duck. Some $5 duck that I brought home one day long ago. I swear, the little shithead loves it.

Anyway, it looks and smells like old crack whore underwear these days, so I've been on a mission to find a replacement. For weeks, I have looked in every store, to no avail.
Finally, yesterday, I bought what I thought was close enough at the dollar store. Came home, presented it to the mutt with a big, happy ceremony, and proudly walked away.

What does he wake me up with at 3 AM last night? Shaking it in my face, no less?
Some stuffed rat toy that I haven't seen in 6 months. I forgot that this thing even existed. A special Moron mailed him this thing as a gift last year, and he apparently buried it somewhere - only to go get it when the favored duck went into the trashcan.
The new duck? Still lying on the floor where I tossed it. Ignored like a bastard, red-headed stepchild...

409 The Good:
I got to see my grandnephew today. He's great. Perfect, in fact. Walking, talking (well, sort of) and being every bit of 14 months old.
Niece is still a beautiful young woman, her husband seems like a real good kid, life is OK for them.

Meh. Another day scratched off the calendar, right?

Are you talking a plasma cutter or laser cutter?

The industry standard 40W CO2 benchtop laser cutter is an Epilog.....runs about $12K. If you look into the competition, you find that Full Spectrum Laser in Las Vegas, NV, has a 40W unit for about $4,000. Then you look into the corporate history of Full Spectrum and discover that their initial business model was to get cheap Chinese laser units in and upgrade them to something that First World Companies might consider a product.

The upshot being, I now own a cheap Chinese 40W cutting laser that won't even shut-off if I open the access hatch, doesn't deal with thermal overload gracefully, has a manual translated from Chinese by amateurs, and runs off a controller that people love to hate.....but.......was only $600. I can shove a lot of arduinos in the gap between $600 and $4000.

Are you talking a plasma cutter or laser cutter?

This one has interchangeable heads: plasma, waterjet, etc., so it's not a low-end unit ... about $20,000. But to use it ... it's only available in a welding class.

In other news, several engines ran. Only one did not, and it was likely out of gas.
