John Kass: Gee, Obama's Sure Quiet About the Chicago Police Shooting Cover-Up, Huh?

I proposed that GOP candidates should go to Chicago to call for Rahm Emmanuel's resignation and decry Democrats' racist, corrupt rule of cities.

I hope someone will do that. I imagine they won't.

Meanwhile, Obama's quiet as a churchmouse.

Have you watched the news about President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton loudly demanding justice in the Laquan McDonald case in Chicago?

No?

Me neither. I haven't seen word one from the mouths of Obama or Clinton about any of it. All I've seen are tepid, tapioca statements from their spokesmen.

That silence interests me. Sometimes, what politicians avoid, what they won't say, is more compelling than their dog and pony shows and photo ops.

Yes, Clinton did back a call for a Justice Department investigation of Chicago police when the mayor was still in denial. But since then, crickets. She and other national Democrats are keeping their hands off Chicago. And I'm sure you know why.

The guy who runs Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, is their guy.

The whole column is worth reading.

Megyn Kelly also keeps asking: Why is Obama, who has gone to every mass shooting site, staying away from San Bernadino?

The answer is so obvious. As Krauthammer said: Because he doesn't want people to notice the terrorist shooting. He doesn't want people to pay attention to it.

He's pretending it didn't happen, just as he pretended Kathy Steinle wasn't murdered by an ilegal he permitted to remain in this country.

I actually don't want him to resign. I am tired of the DEMANDING for resignations, of sheriffs, of professors, of whoever.

Now, my darlings, I'd be all for demanding that Le Baroque, Emperor of Prancercizers, resigned. I'd throw a big party for about an entire year.

7 As for the Chicago shooting -- the coverup is worse then the crime here.

Rahm should have immediately fired the cop (like they did in S Charleston, SC) and it wouldn't have become this huge issue.

So of course Hillary and Obama will cover for him. Because there's no disagreement (well very little) that the cop fucked up majorly. The big scandal here is the cover up.

35 According to the Tueller Drill video, there's no way to stop a knife attack unless you have at LEAST 21 feet. So that Chicago cop, believe it or not, did what he had to do to save his own life.

The knifeman was bouncing on the balls of his feet, had used the butcher knife to slash the cop car's tires, and was clearly ready to rumble. The policeman, amazing though it may seem, really had to respond super-fast when the guy turned to face him.

This is the problem when we civilians, most of us have never been in any kind of deadly fight -- opine on what is possible/feasible in a deadly force scenario.

39 Although the shooting was bad enough but they covered this up for a year. They went and erased camera footage of the shooting at a nearby Burger King. This was done by the brass, not the on scene investigators.

I'm sure they did other stuff too.

This is what gets people made about the Police. Not that they shoot people but that they are quite willing to hide and to lie about the facts if they've made a mistake. Yet most of the time they're given a clean bill and are said to have acted in accordance with protocols and procedures so no trial.

We all know that some of those shootings were wrong and they know we know but we can't prove it so they just shine everyone on and then wonder why no one respects the police any more.

actually, you're wrong that there's no way to stop a knife attack but you have to start moving right away. 67 The Tueller Drill video for cops vs. knifemen says that tests with hundreds of officers in simulated fights demonstrate that a minimum distance of 21 feet is necessary for a cop to be able to unholster his gun and get off just TWO shots, center of mass, into the attacker.

In other words, real life ain't like the movies. This reminds me of the African-American pastor who was invited by his local police department to go through their live exercise of street fighting, who came out of it saying he wasn't going to criticize cop shootings any more because he'd experienced firsthand the speed, ferocity, tunnel vision, etc. that prevail in these deadly force situations. Posted by: TheQuietMan at December 11, 2015 07:25 PM (45oDG)

84 And about that 21 feet? The cop was decreasing that distance from the
beginning so if there was a threat there from that knife, the cop
increased the threat to himself.

But the main things are the
multiple shots after the guy was down and the cover up after. Oh and the
Lies that they told to cover up the cover up.

85 Willy J. "Holstered weapon is the basis for the Tueller Drill."

No, if you watch the video, they cover the "gun already drawn" scenarios also.

Yes, 16 rounds was overkill, but that's not what the cop is being charged with: he's being damned for shooting at all. Also, it's easy for us noncombatants to judge what a man does with a huge rush of adrenaline surging through his veins. Many cops report after a shooting that they shot "once or twice," when actually they emptied their guns, without even being conscious of it.

I think the cop should have his day in court before we hang him, that's all.

I propose we start eliminating whole Federal departments and put every fired or laid off employee on half salary for six months. Can't find a job in the private sector after that? Tough titty.

I can't think of anything else that would simultaneously boost credit standing of the U.S., enhance the efficiency of the federal gov't, and solve the budget crisis simultaneously.

Wait, you mean we'd have to have an actual opposition party in power in Congress to do this? Never mind.

Having seen both, the situation the pastor was shown is not the same as the guy traipsing down the middle of the road with the cop moving toward him shooting.

And again it ain't that so much as that they themselves believed it was a bad shoot. Otherwise why did they try to cover it up? And erase camera footage?

yeah, but the reason the cop was in 21 feet of the guy was because he put himself within 21 feet of the guy. The cop and his partner drove right up to the guy, the cop opened the door to his car, and started firing.

the other cops on scene had corralled the guy and were trying to talk him down. There was no reason for such an aggressive maneuver with the police car, much less the shooting.

105 Oh and btw, I agree with the decision made in Ferguson. Michael Brown was the aggressor and was an imminent danger.

And for the Baltimore thing; that may have been a tune up ride gone bad or the guy start to have a seizure because of drugs. So negligence but not murder. (and I think that Porter is going to get off.)

Some of the others are iffy and there's less to see about them no video conflicting reports.

Just to point out that I'm not a knee jerk anti cop guy. Each case is different. Each situation is different.

That said, generally, cops get away too often with no punishment because HQ is covering for themselves too.

There's no standards of training and no objective panel like say the NTSB (although they have had some questionable investigative results).

Police departments investigating themselves is ridiculous on its face. And that needs to be changed for the public to have any confidence in the cops again.

112 Attorney Andrew Branca at Legal Insurrection covers this very thoughtfully, including the number of gunshots.

I will say that I was upset when I first saw the video, though I did realize that the young man was ready to fight (no surprise to learn he was on angel dust, which makes its users utterly lose all regard for danger). And Branca says it's VERY telling that the Chicago rulers, who have no love for cops, didn't bring Murder 1 charges a year ago: they must know that the policeman has a good case for justified use of force. Otherwise, why would they have held back? This is the kind of thing they're usually all over, like stink on a skunk.

The cops should never escalate the violence. Should be the same as any other self defense shootings -- if you escalate the violence, you don't get to claim self defense.

Yes, if the suspect rushes you and you have a reasonable fear for your life, you can defend yourself.

But if you (the cop) is consistently escalating the violence without using your words to try to de-escalate, then you shoot someone because YOUR escalating makes you "in fear for your life" ... sorry, that's not self defense.

Yes, I understand we give cops more leeway to use violence to arrest people. But I really do think there is a ... unsettling indifference to human life among way too many cops, and WAY too many cops are willing to cover the ass of a cop who kills someone.

Yes we still need to be vigilant and hold law enforcement accountable but it's night and day on how it used to be and it continues to get better. Unfortunately the over zealous calls for accountability and potential for false charges of misconduct have handcuffed (pun intended) law enforcement just a bit.

145 Compare the 1999 41 Shots case in The Bronx.

The four cops were part of an anti-crime unit who were looking for a serial rapist. They spotted Abner Diallo who matched the description. Getting out of their car, the police yelled "Police."

The tragedy was that Diallo was an African immigrant with little English. Any native-born Bronx resident would know that four white guys jumping out of a car brandishing guns would have to be the po-po, not a stick-up crew.

Thinking he was being robbed, Diallo reached for his wallet. The police panicked and shot.

The Black Bronx DA indicted for murder. What saved the cops was a change of venue to upstate New York and their getting on the stand and crying over their regret.

They'll pick some place maybe like the University of Chicago or one of the Museums.

Those are most likely Gun Free Zones and thus give them the most opportunity with the least immediate response.

There's some pretty hairy places around San Berdoo but they didn't pick one of those to shoot up.

And Chicago is one of the largest cities in the world as far as size goes.

Lots of targets not so many cops. And no concealed carry (well almost none) legally especially where they'll probably be aiming at.
