For the First Time in 20 Years, a NYT Poll Finds That a Majority of Americans Oppose a Ban on So-Called "Assault Weapons"

Lot of news coming. Don't be misled by this cheap easy one!

I have more cheap easy ones coming soon!

Update: Audio of Kurt Russel sparring with Hollywood Reporter reporter Jeffrey Wells. I mentioned this yesterday. Good audio.

Russell does something I have trouble doing: he remains completely good-humored and in control the whole time, and he wins just on tone. (Though he also wins in all the other areas, too.)

If the word "ban" is in the question, most Americans will be against it unless it is horrific.

ie, "ban" on Muslims
"ban" on gaymarrirage

12 I think more people have been educated that "assault weapons" are not "machine guns"

The whole point of that term was "newspeak" in order to fool people. Doesn't work anymore.

The NRA was actually the main reason fully automatic machine guns were largely banned in the US, they saw it being a catalyst for banning guns at large.

Posted by: Coolio at December 11, 2015 11:44 AM (MA8Bf)

13 Most of the lofos who were surveyed probably thought "assault weapons" are already illegal fully automatic weapons.

I think it's more basic. When the AWB was sunset, there was all kinds of hyperbole about how blood would be running in the streets and so on.

I just know I have "non-gun" friends and they think an assault rifle is a military M-16 or an Ak-47. When that term first came into the language, people saw a black scary looking gun and just assumed it was military machine guns.

Now more people realize an "assault rifle" is basically a catch all term that could mean a 100 year old rifle.

I would easily wager 99.9% of homicides are not committed by "assault weapons".

Guns are one of the few things conservatives are really good about "pushing back" which is why the Left so badly wants that head on a stake. It's their "white whale".

It was during an interview with Carolyn McCarthy, who wants to ban all the things. She was going off about all the deadly features on an assault weapon that no one "needs."

So the person interviewing her asked about barrel shrouds and why they were banned. She had to admit that she had no idea what one is:

-------
Carlson: In February, you introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007. It would regulate semi-automatic assault weapons, including weapons that have pistol grips, a forward grip and something called a barrel shroud. Weapons with a barrel shroud would be regulated. What is a barrel shroud and why should we regulate it?

McCarthy: I think the more important thing is that it also would have banned the large capacity clips that Colin Ferguson had used and also the killer. But we are talking about.

Carlson: OK. But I read the legislation. I'm sorry. I read the legislation and it said that it would regulate barrel shrouds. What is a barrel shroud? And why should we regulate that?

McCarthy: The guns that were chosen back in those days were basically the gun that most gangs and criminal were using to kill our police officers. I'm not saying it was the best bill. But that was the best bill they could get out...

Carlson: Do you know what a barrel shroud is?

McCarthy: I actually don't know what a barrel shroud is.

Carlson: Oh, OK. Because it is in your legislation.

McCarthy: I believe it is a shoulder thing that goes up.

Carlson: No, it's not.

Now more people realize an "assault rifle" is basically a catch all term that could mean a 100 year old rifle.

Assault rifle has a simple, technical definition.

You're thinking of the political gumby term of "assault weapon". That's the term that means whatever the left wants it to mean.

He showed up to tape a Hot Tuna show, at an airfield, in 77 and forgot to bring his Mic Stands.
He spent the duration of each song standing on top of a folding chair with his arms out over his head, as wide as he could get them, to record the show.
Afterwards, Jorma and Jack had him brought backstage to apologize for stretching out every song in the set to see if he could keep his arms up for the whole tune.

Jesus did.

That's not purely a flippant response. If we believe that the constitution can actually serve as a blueprint for a free and open society, we can't hold one another accountable for past sins, real or perceived. People's minds can change, and they're going to have to, because things cannot carry on as they have. There can't be purity tests for that.

Donald in the white house is not the end-point for Trump supporters. He is not our Obama, secretly harboring each point of the conservative agenda, fully formed, to implement in secret once he's in the white house.

169 "Assault Rifle": a military fire arm which can select the rate of fire; single shot, multi - shot, full automatic, without manually moving the bolt action to chamber another round. This rifle will chamber a round and shoot as fast as it can fire a round.

For a civilian to privately own such a weapon, would require a Class III license (which has been the law since the 1930's, I believe), and is deucedly hard and expensive to get.
Some people have them. Some organizations have them and allow private citizens to shoot them on private property as recreation (and it would be fun, but expensive).

Civilians can buy semi-automatic rifles and pistols, which can also chamber a round from a magazine without the shooter manually moving a bolt, or cocking the hammer. It does not have a selective rate of fire. It can only fire as fast as the shooter can pull the trigger for a single shot. An M-1, AR-15, Colt .45 ACP (and its many clones), Beretta, Browning, Glock 9 mm, and on, and on, and on.

A bolt action or lever action rifle is not a semi-automatic, although these sorts of rifles have been used by the military in the past (and bolt action rifles are still used today by snipers, etc.).

183 Ronald Reagan, among others, was a Democrat during his formative years as an adult (and even a Union president!!) . Even as President, he would wax lyrical about FDR and the New Deal. Sometimes I thought he was being slightly sarcastic and condescending when he talked like that, but he didn't call me and tell me what he really thought.

FDR's New Deal meant a lot to people in those days (even if it was largely an economic and political mistake), because the country was in hard times, and the New Deal showed that the government "cared". It was fascism, which was much in vogue in the 1930's, but it was not some jack-booted, ass kicking, Jew-burning type of fascism. They just locked up the Japs in America.

I think Trump and a lot of "former Democrats" (like that guy from Texas that was governor, Rick Perry) have a notion about how government should work "for the people" to show them that it "cares".
Ultimately, I think people start to realize just how tyrannical even a caring, sharing democracy can stifle liberty. I think that's where Trump is today.

I saw him on CSPAN a few years ago at CPAC, and it was all his boilerplate ramblings, and the crown didn't know quite what to make of him. But I think he (and others), have realized just what a tyrannical demogogue Obama actually was, and really what dangerous situation we were slipping into.
And now, here we are.

187 I mean the guy is still advocating Universal health
care and how great it works. I guarantee you he's going to try and
outbid Democrats on free shit like student loans, infrastructure, school
spending, etc.

I heard him with my own ears speak on the TV last summer, and that's not quite what he said.
1) repeal Obamacare, which made my wife excited and say ""Yes!!"
2) Let insurance companies (really GREAT insurance companies) take care of most people's needs.

I have read what he said about Universal Health care a few years ago, and briefly, he said, If we can make it work, we can try that.

I think that Trump is a nationalist, populist, and a political empiricist. He is not a conservative in philosophy, but is willing to listen to people if he thinks their ideas work.
And that's better than most of what we are being offered by most of the candidates. 4 more years of Obama II, Hillary Bugaloo! will change this country beyond repair.

189 Russell is solid. Was in Gunsmoke twice as a kid. Still, not one dime of mine will go near that Tarantino *bleep*. He has entered the Michael Moore column.
