As the article points out, he's a Libertarian. So, communitarians get your denunciations ready, he is not pure!
I appreciate the heck out of it, though. He has always seemed more "level headed" than a lot of his compatriots in the industry. He talks a lot bout the Disney period being all about workmanship and just getting the job done, not being fancy or hoity-toity or anything. It's a high-paying job, but a job. I think Kurt mentioned Captain Ron in the commentary to BTLC.
The only downside to that commentary is it was many years after they made the movie and half of it was Kurt and John Carpenter reminiscing and talking about their families. The reason Escape from LA sucked so bad was Carpenter - has a ton of talent but is kind of a conspiracy/occupy hollywood/social justice wanker. Dude just needed a massive chill pill and to knock off the wacky tabaccy for a bit. Now that I think of it he's kind of like that director from a couple of threads ago, only with talent and a budget. I think it's over, too. The two biggest streaming services, Netflix and Amazon, know exactly when and where their viewers stop watching. They know exactly how many people watch what movie all the way through. Actual information in other words. That's not going to benefit a fringe group annoying to the vast majority of straights. There are so many choices available that people aren't going to waste their time watching something that offends them. At this point in time the gays won the right to 'marriage' and the white house was swathed in rainbow colors for the event. It's over. It's yesterday. Posted by: All Hail Eris, Michigangsta at December 10, 2015 07:00 PM (jR7Wy) Technically, you're supposed to remake flops that were a good idea - and technically, that's exactly this movie. It was also supposed to be a Western and they ended up filming it as modern. I don't know who's doing the remake - yes, remakes have an earned bad reputation. BUT with the right writing, direction and cast, they could actually make a hit out of a good movie that did poorly at the box office. The ads for BTLC, for example, were *terrible*. They actually mocked them in the commentary. Could go very wrong, might go very right. (shrugs) Decent chance it won't happen, sometimes they just do this to retain rights. 321 Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 10, 2015 07:28 PM (39g3+) Training Day had one of my top ten intense scenes. I felt the emotions when what's his face was left at the gang bangers house to be killed. Posted by: Max Rockatansky at December 10, 2015 07:31 PM (iRZl4) Yeah, that's a good nailbiter of a scene. Funny thing, I had a crew of Mexican guys from the 'hood in Oxnard working for me when that movie came out. When I told them Smiley was played by a Maori from New Zealand, no one believed me. Had to gather them around my computer and pull up Cliff Curtis' IMDB page to convince them. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at December 10, 2015 07:37 PM (o98Jz) 342
331 300 Law Abiding Citizen. Liked that one a lot (no Kurt Russell in it tho).
Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale at December 10, 2015 07:25 PM (m3iiU) That was a great movie .. except that Jamie Foxx didn't get mauled to death by a pack of wild dogs early on. The real pivot point is 1996 when Congress passed an appropriations bill
with an amendment inserted into it that took money away from the CDC, which it had used a couple million dollars to study gun violence research the prior year, and the bill essentially said to the CDC, 'You can't do any research that could be used to advocate for or promote gun control.' What this did was create an enormous political chill on that work. It took away the money... Pretty sure that was because it's the Center for DISEASE Control, and guns aren't a disease....but now our Surgeon General is a big-time gun control advocate, so he'll find ways to include guns under health care. The CDC's research was politically motivated and ridiculously bad science *and* it had nothing to do with epidemiology.
They were basically taking money meant for disease control and giving it to the Brady Campaign, it was an utter politically-motivated fuckup which liberals like about to this day like they lie about everything else under the sun. GROSS: Is there any kind of, like, specific gun regulation that, if enforced, would have made the mass shootings in your database not possible, would've prevented them, outside of outlawing all guns?
FOLLMAN: Sure. It's an interesting question. I think a lot of people raise that question around the notion of the assault weapons ban. There was one in place for a ten-year period starting with the Clinton administration in the 1990s. There were mass shootings during that time. So in a basic sense, you know, an assault weapons ban isn't going to solve our mass shootings problem. I think it's really a much more global question about regulation. You know, one of the - another argument that's raised often around this is strict state gun laws. So after San Bernardino happened, a lot of people who are on the conservative side of the gun regulation issues said, oh, well, look, you know, California has the most - some of the most stringent gun laws in the country, and these people got these guns, and they were legally obtained weapons. And so those laws don't work. This is often said about Chicago. Illinois has strict regulations. Chicago has one of the worst urban gun violence problems in the nation. But in a sense, that's a silly argument as well because these aren't uniform laws across the states. And a lot of guns that are in play in Chicago are coming from Indiana. A lot of the guns in play in California are coming from Nevada, which is a place where you can buy guns really easily. So to the bigger question of what - you know, what kinds of gun regulations could potentially stop these crimes, it's difficult to say. Our data set does show that, with a number of these mass shootings, there are more than 40 weapons used by these shooters in these 73 cases that we've studied whose weapons would have been prohibited under the assault weapons legislation that Diane Feinstein put forward recently. The one thing that does crack me up is the over the top Italians in spaghetti western movies. I love them, As I understand it some were done with English speakers doing lines in English and Italians doing lines at the same time in Italian. Then each were dubbed into the other language.
