It Turns Out They Were Exactly Who We All Suspected They Were

Dark suspicions confirmed. So much for the just workplace violence due to a religious argument explana-bi. As well as the modified limited hangout that he simply got radicalized by a evil extremist foreign woman. Both now inoperative.

And note that this is their best we're-totally-not-America-hating-angry-Jihadis look for immigration control. I'd say that they clearly need to work on it but on the other hand it apparently worked well enough for them to get in so maybe I'm not the best judge in this area.

Leader of Paris Attacks Recruited His Terror Team From Refugees in Hungary

Just as we all suspected would happen.

A suspected ringleader of the deadly Paris attacks travelled to Hungary where he 'recruited a team' from unregistered migrants passing through the country, government officials say.

Salah Abdeslam, who remains on the run from European authorities, is believed to have visited Budapest's Keleti station, then left the country with the team he pulled together.

The development comes as evidence grows that ISIS jihadis are passing through Greece and the Balkans hidden among refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict.

The Real Reason Why Obama Gave That Speech: His Daily Polling Results Were Abysmal

As I suspected:

A plurality of likely voters, 43%, rated Obama's response to the San Bernardino attack as "poor." Only 34% called it excellent or good, with the rest describing his response as fair. So nearly two-thirds considered Obama's response to be fair or poor.

On the broader question of whether the San Bernardino massacre was mainly a terrorism problem (as conservatives believe) or a gun problem (as liberals insist), voters side with conservatives. Sixty-nine percent say San Bernardino was "primarily a terrorism issue," while only 20% call it "primarily a gun control issue."

How The NY Times Lies With the Truth

Nothing is inaccurate in this chart but it has been cleverly constructed to mislead and hide some key information from you.

extremeistkillings

Man all those extremists sure are an equally surly bunch. Oh wait - here Rusty at the Jawa Report adds a pertinent detail or two that clarifies just where the problem lies.

Extremists-vs-islamist-deaths-us-nytimes

Related: How The Anti-Gun Sausage Gets Made at the NY Times

And it's pretty much just as tendentious and plotted as you suspected.

The day after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, [publisher] Arthur [Sulzberger] was in my office. Would it be possible, he asked, for us to go bananas on guns for a while? (He actually used an earthier expression than bananas.) I said yes, and mobilized our editorial writers. In the next month, we published about 15 editorials on the subject of guns, gun violence and gun regulation.

Note that Sulzberger himself has a NYC gun carry permit which is pretty much restricted solely to the powerful and wealthy in the city. Because the aristos can handle guns - you can't.

Bookworm on Why Motives Matter and David French's Pyramid of Hate

This is why I find so infuriating the endless Leftist comparison between Syrian refugees and groups of people subject to historical discrimination. There was no evidence whatsoever that Holocaust era Jews, en masse, had a burning desire to destroy America. There was no evidence whatsoever that Irish Catholics were intent upon planting bombs across America. There was evidence that Iranians were a problem, so Jimmy Carter banned them to protests from . . . nobody.

While there are many innocent Syrians, the reality is that (a) Muslims really do hate us, and in dangerous numbers, and (b) Syrian Muslims really hate us, in a weaponized way.

And then you have the pyramid:

To understand the Muslim edifice of hate, imagine it as a pyramid - with broadly-shared bigotry at the bottom, followed by stair steps of escalating radicalism - culminating in jihadist armies that in some instances represent a greater share of their respective populations than does the active-duty military in the United States.

How an SAS Team Tracked and Killed the ISIS Executioner, Jihadi John

Nano-helicopters.

And the secret weapon used to identify Jihadi John was a 1lb helicopter drone launched by the soldiers.

The daring mission began in darkness on November 11 when two US Chinook helicopters skimmed low across the Syrian desert to land at an isolated spot.

Avoiding all roads, the team of soldiers drove in desert buggies 35 miles south towards Raqqa. At about 3am, they 'dug in' five miles outside the city, where they remained undetected.

The following evening, while the rest of the team were on lookout, one man assembled four 3ft nano-helicopters with infrared and night-vision cameras in the nose. They were pre-programmed to fly to Jihadi John's hideout - a six-storey building in Raqqa.

The first drone set off towards its target, then entered 'hover and stare' mode, recording the movements of IS suspects at a building near the Sharksa mosque.

It beamed footage by satellite back to SAS HQ in Hereford and the US Central Command in Doha, Qatar.

As curious as I am to know the story I wish they wouldn't go into such detail here. Unless it's really all misdirection anyway.

Tom Friedman Has Another Foreign Person Anecdote That Just Happens To Make His Point Perfectly

For those of you who picked Taxi Driver in this week's Friedman anecdote pool sorry you're out.

Merkel's Government Approves Special Labeling Requirement For Israeli Products

No other country has such requirements for 'disputed territories'. There can only be one reason for doing this: to make it easier for BDS boycotts.

Kowtowing in the South China Sea

Welcome to low-T nation status.

In response to China's actions, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter declared in May that "the United States will fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows, as U.S. forces do all over the world." It took five months for the administration to back up that declaration, but it finally appeared to have done so when the Lassen sailed close to Subi Reef in what we all assumed was a Freedom of Navigation operation.

But Dean Cheng of the Heritage Foundation has pointed out that the Lassen voyage, far from effectively contesting China's sovereignty claims, may actually have validated them, because when the Lassen passed by Subi Reef it turned off its radar and grounded its helicopters. If so, that would make the sailing not a Freedom of Navigation patrol but an "innocent passage."

The point is not arcane. When naval vessels sail in international waters, they are free to conduct normal operations. When they want to sail through another country's territorial waters, they must make an "innocent passage" by severely curtailing their normal range of activities. That appears to be just what the Lassen did, and if so, the effect of the voyage was to recognize de facto that Subi Reef is Chinese territory, in contradiction to international law and America's declared policy, and to the detriment of America's vital national interests in the region.

Classic Iowahawk: Feed Your Family on $10 Billion a Day

Seems like these days I hear a lot of whiney whiners whining about "out of control government spending" and "insane deficits" and such, trying to make hay out of a bunch of pointy-head boring finance hooey. Sure, $3.7 trillion  of spending sounds like a big number. "Oh, boo-hoo, how are we going to get $3.7 trillion dollars? We're broke, boo-hoo-hoo," whine the whiners.  What these skinflint crybabies fail to realize is that $3.7 trillion is for an entire year - which translates into only a measly $10 billion per day!

Mister, I call that a bargain. Especially since it pays for all of us - you and me, the whole American family. Like all families, we Americas have to pay for things - health, food, safety, uncle Dave America with his drinking problem. And when little Billy America wants that new quad runner they promised, do Mom and Dad America deny him? No, they get a second job at Circle K, because they know little Billy might have one of his episodes and burn down the house.

So let's all sit down together as an American family with a calendar and make a yearly budget. First, let's lock in the $3.7 trillion of critical family spending priorities; now let's get to work on collecting the pay-as-we-go $10 billion daily cash flow we need.

Behind Those Awful Album Cover Lists

An interesting look at the people behind the covers and a reminder that they were/are in fact real people with complete lives beyond just a cheesy album cover.

Freddie Gage's claim to fame among most internet users is the album cover for the audio version of his book All My Friends Are Dead, which is understandably a little morose and a bit on-the-nose for most people. But Gage, nonetheless, had a career as a preacher that lasted decades, one predicated on the early lessons he learned as a former gang member in the Houston area.

"He was blunt," fellow Rev. John Bisagno told The Houston Chronicle after Gage's death last year. "He didn't put things in theological terms but in street language that they all could really understand. He didn't pull any punches. Second only to Billy Graham, Freddie Gage was undoubtedly the most successful evangelist of the '50s, '60s and '70s."

Define en massah oops, I mean en mass.

Pew Research:
"For instance, a Pew Research Center survey of Muslims in 39 countries asked Muslims whether they want sharia law, a legal code based on the Quran and other Islamic scripture, to be the official law of the land in their country.

Responses on this question vary widely. Nearly all Muslims in
Afghanistan (99%) and most in Iraq (91%) and Pakistan (84%) support
sharia law as official law. But in some other countries, especially in
Eastern Europe and Central Asia - including Turkey (12%), Kazakhstan
(10%) and Azerbaijan (8%) - relatively few favor the implementation of
sharia law. "

Topic on mental health confinement?

When I was working at Metropolitan State Hospital a few years ago, one of the first things I learned: you can be held for 72 hours of observation if you're identified by a police or other public officer as a danger to yourself or others. Outside of that, not much the authorities can do anymore.

Which is interesting because in the past (generally before 1969), you could be placed in a mental hospital for a lot of bogus reasons, including having any kind of a drug habit, or for being gay.

160 But my point stands. You could equally well assert that Jews in America, en masse, have/had no desire to destroy America, and yet we have the Rosenbergs, Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, George Soros, Amy Goodman, Bernadine Doerhn, Mark Rudd,Tom Steyer, the Sulzbergers, the Meyers (owners of WaPo), and many others to prove that a relatively small minority in a group can cause a shitload of trouble.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at December 10, 2015 12:03 AM (oKE6c)

The difference is ...

Jews have been in the New World since the very beginning. Haym Solomon was one of the main financiers of the Revolution. And, in modern times, without Jews in America the first nation with nukes would have been someone else - and that is a pretty big deal. The biggest deal of the 20th century, really.

The fact is that any nation that welcomed Jews has always prospered. In Europe, they use to be into doing that and then kicking the Jews out and taking their stuff, which interestingly almost always resulted in reduced prosperity for said country.

But, as with all things, you have to take the bad with the good. It's just a question of which outweighs which.

I believe the courts had already ordered that most mental patients except that meeting stringent conditions had to be released back in the late 70s. The democrats had a grandiose plan where there would be outpatient clinics for the mentally ill in every neighborhood. But this never got funded in budgets after Reagan got elected in 1980 so of course the mentally ill in the streets problem is all Reagan's fault. Because the states that used to run the mental hospitals housing these people were clearly incapable of funding and operating outpatient clinics.

170 "Re: mental hospitals, my mom constantly, constantly says 'well Reagan

One interesting question to ask people who say this is, "Well, wait a minute here. Reagan as Governor or as President?"

Most of them will start sweating and backing and filling and waving their hands. Because it's just a conversational trope to them, a virtue signifier, and they haven't ever really thought it through or read up on it.

As a Commiefornian, let me talk about Governor RR and asylums.

First off, the deinstitutionalization movement wasn't driven only by the ACLU.

There were also many members of the psychiatric community who honestly felt that institutionalization was cruel, and of dubious clinical value, and that "community based care", and new wonder drugs, would allow nut cases to function outside of asylums.

Between well intentioned p-docs pushing nut cases out the door, and well intentioned liberal civil rights activists barring the door from nut cases being pushed back in, the asylums emptied out pretty rapidly.

Reagan, at that time the newly elected governor of CA, had been handed an absolute financial nightmare by the outgoing Democratic governor (father of the current Democratic governor). Things which weren't pulling their weight in the state budget had to go. Emptied-out publicly funded asylums did go.

And, really, Democrats in the state legislature didn't fight Reagan very hard on the matter. They were far more concerned with protecting welfare checks. A bigger voting constituency by far than nut cases.

Grump, yeah that price for a purse/pocket snub is great.

Damn if I don't always check out the small used/consignment section at my indoor range for revolver finds. They have what looks like a new-in box Ruger Security Six ($400), mint condition. But this time I *really* mean it - there is no room in the safe/budget/schedule for another shootin' iron. This was also where I saw a well-used King Cobra stainless snub with a bobbed hammer - left it there for 3 weeks, then just had to jump on it (it was mispriced, low). New hammer and lots of love and refinishing back at the Colt mother ship and voila, thing is beautiful and worth 4 times what I have into it.

I'm counting on the Ruger being gone next time I go in.

172 The problem with that homegrown "right wing" extremists graph is that the organization who put it together, New America, mixes together murders, bank robberies and attempted bombings by racists, anarchists, neo-Nazis, sovereign citizen types, anti-abortion, and even include the nutty guy who flew his plane into the Austin IRS office, killing himself, and then they call him a "victim".

Heck, they even include the killing of George Tiller in the list.

The problem with this data, as I see it, is that there are several different reasons and philosophies at work in the cases of the "right wing extremism", and yet only one for the Islamic extremism.

Also, I would imagine that a vast majority of those on the right would condemn the motivations of those "right wing extremists", while a large percentage of Muslims tacitly support the actions of the Islamic extremists.

Hard left politics is to Jews historically pretty much as terrorism is to Muslims currently. This is not a popular point, probably particularly not on the HQ, but I appeal to the higher minded to accept this perhaps unpalatable truth. Unpalatable truths are, nonetheless, truths.

174 Which is interesting because in the past (generally before 1969), you could be placed in a mental hospital for a lot of bogus reasons, including having any kind of a drug habit, or for being gay.

The authorities used to use insane asylums to get troublesome, borderline, and just really weird people off the streets until several court cases, ending with O'Connor v. Donaldson in 1975 at the Supreme Court.

To be honest, a lot of the times people were thrown in there were pretty unjust and unreasonable. It was just easier for families to toss weird Uncle Charlie in the institution and forget about him, or for the local judge to get that troublesome janitor that kept talking to himself into the asylum so he stops making people nervous.

That along with the vagrancy laws being overturned kind of flooded the streets with people who were at the fringes of society and contributing little to nothing. It used to be pretty easy to clean up a town with those two devices, but was it just and fair?

The whole argument is leftist bullshit.

In 1975 SCOTUS issued its decision O'Connor v. Donaldson, which made it un-Constitutional to institutionalize anyone without a showing that he posed an imminent threat to himself or others, and/or could not take care of himself on his own. For this reason, mental hospitals HAD to let many inmates go. (I was dating a psychiatrist nurse at the time - whom I met skiing, and not in a professional context, I hasten to add - who was put out of work by this decision.

Classic leftist maneuver. Look up stats on lynching. They invariably start in 1870, for some reason. Why? I dunno; but perhaps the lynching of 11 blacks in NYC during the draft riots of 1863 is a consideration. If you start your stats in say, 1860, NYC is the lynching capital of America.

219 A plurality of likely voters, 43%, rated Obama's response to the San Bernardino attack as "poor." Only 34% called it excellent or good, with the rest describing his response as fair. So nearly two-thirds considered Obama's response to be fair or poor.

Unfortunately, that also means 57% called TeleNegro's response fair, good or excellent. Nobody with half a brain can call his "response" anything near that.

Just another testament to the stupidity that has overrun this country.

Yeah but this was all before my time. I'm just going off what I've read over the years.

Neither governors nor presidents had any say in whether the non-dangerous mentally ill would be released. And it turned out that setting up a localized outpatient system would be crazy expensive - as in an order of magnitude or more more expensive than the state-run hospital system. Which is why pretty much no state ever created one. Plus you have the fact that a lot of the releasees had no interest in further treatment - no matter where it was located.

Yeah, really. You could selectively and surgically go through history to knock off fewer than 100 people and that would completely change society. There are maybe 25-30 people alive today who are the primary problem, and without them things would be very, very different.

Almost no changes in society come from large numbers, they come from small numbers with a lot of drive and influence leading larger numbers of people with the same desires, but lacking the influence and drive. Without George Soros, half the left's mechanism falls to pieces, for example. His money and all those institutions he built up are what sustains most of the cultural rot and insanity we're facing right now.

Its a tough one to call. The Supreme Court basically decided that you cannot deprive someone of the free exercise of their right to liberty unless they're a clear danger to themselves or others. They also decided against vagrancy laws for similar reasons: simply being without a fixed address or visible means of income is not sufficient cause for legal action.

Between these two decisions, yeah, society suffered. A lot of homeless on the streets, a lot of people who were trouble. Guys who talk to their bottle of booze, pissing on the walls, stinking up libraries and so on. Is it right to throw them in jail for not having a job? Or in an insane asylum for being weird? Objectively that seems wrong to me.

But then look at any big city and you have a notable population of people just like that, is it right for them to rot the city and take up resources to keep them alive? If we had more charity and more organizations helping them out independently, maybe it would work better. The poor will always be with us, for whatever reasons.

I'm just very uncomfortable with the government being able to decide you're unable to care for yourself properly so they can throw you in an institution and throw away the key.

253 A handful? Really? Not to be contentious, but without Jews, we effectively wouldn't have a leftist problem in America today.

I would have to strongly disagree with this. European countries that had tossed their Jews out long ago (and the rest of them pretty much emptied Jews out in WWII) all have major leftist problems.

Jews have been at the forefront of leftism in America but they haven't been the cause of it. The West has a problem with self-hating leftism because the West is individualistic and self-hate is the disease of the weak personality in an individualistic culture.

If you dispute that, I'll list 100 names in support of this contention. Hard left politics is to Jews historically pretty much as terrorism is to Muslims currently. This is not a popular point, probably particularly not on the HQ, but I appeal to the higher minded to accept this perhaps unpalatable truth. Unpalatable truths are, nonetheless, truths.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at December 10, 2015 12:25 AM (oKE6c)

Jews have big self-hating leftist problem, no doubt. That's because Judaism uses guilt more than any other Western culture and self-hate is the result of weak personalities not being able to handle the guilt mechanism.

But, with Jews the thing is that you can pick pretty much any human endeavor (good or bad) and you will likely find very influential Jews in it. Not everything, but most pursuits of Man. So, as I wrote before, it's a matter of taking the bad with the good - measuring out what is at risk with each and making an assessment.

But to claim that there would be no leftist problem in America without Jews is a bit far, I would say. The movement would have been retarded a decade or two, in a fair accounting, but the WASPs are the ones who push mainstream leftism and who have traditionally wielded real power in America. And the WASP schools (the Ivies) didn't even allow in more than a handful of Jews through the mid 20th century.Central Park West was built by Jews because they couldn't get into the restricted buildings on 5th Avenue, which is perfectly fine with me and worked out pretty well for New York.

271 So, I live in a sitcom. We started as old/young, boy/girl, black/white, and dog cat.

In the second season we added another dog, and then a boyfriend. Hilarity of course ensues.

Most of us are busy and we're rarely in the house at the same time. Yesterday we rescued another dog. We're having a rare kumbaya moment downstairs. Nearly all of the "family" together, fire roaring in the fireplace, new dog feeling the love.

Boyfriend comes home and has no reaction to girl saying her mom's about to go in for surgery, asks if she minds if he goes downstairs and plays video games with other boy. He emerges, takes some shit, she tells him to sleep on the couch.

She doesn't want him to sleep on the couch. She wants him to apologize and comfort her because she's worried about Mommy. He doesn't.

I'm just tending the fire (I'm a pyro and rather controlling about fires) and I say "I'm not really here, but this is where you go upstairs and apologize". He doesn't know what to say. I tell him what to say. (btw, I'm the old guy in this story). He doesn't.

So I retreat to my room. There's some yelling and running up and down the stairs.

The cat, who until recently didn't even like me, has decided to sleep in my room tonight.

The boyfriend is an idiot.

Somehow, however, I read that entire suit article thinking no one but a ghey hipster has a seam ripper. I guess in their sewing box, next to their knitting needles, but to the right of the kitty litter.

I mean...a half knot for a small head, whole for large head,
and if you don't know ask a friend. wut? "Hey, Phil,is my head large or small?" Phil proceeds to give him an atomic wedgie.

In Floriduh, to be Baker Acted, you had to be determined to be a danger to yourself or others. Brought into ED and seen by a MD. Could have changed by now. Most were drunk. What was scary was to admit someone with a real mental illness, as no room at the mental hospital, to a regular floor. I had one guy, a new schizophrenic kid, walk into the office I was in, behind me. I turned around and, hello! Very sad kid, as he did not even recognize his own parents, who were completely baffled and helpless. This was on a regular overflow floor, and I was filling in for someone. He could have killed me quite dead and no one would have known for hours. Fortunately he was not in a bad mood, just psychotic and confused. It was not the first time I was on a floor and encountered this...as a new grad had to inject, through his jeans, a tranquilizer to a very confused guy wanting to open a window five floors above ground. THAT was scary.

On that happy note I will probably dream weird crap. G'nite you morons everywhere. xoxo

I went through a serious project a couple of years back to match 'em all up -- all the charcoal suits with various pinstripes and chalkstripes and weave patterns....some of 'em, I had to take them out into the sun to see the difference.

Most of those to whom I refer are, in fact, not capable of rational thought. They remain on the street. And they end up dead, or, lately it seems, raped and left for dead.

There is no way to keep them safe for more than 72 hours, and then it's back to the same awful bare existence.

Well, I think one can get into dangerous ground when calling out the uber-leftist Jews, because, superficially, that smacks of anti-Semitism. Which is sort of silly, because the uber-leftist Jews were/are rarely devout practitioners of the Jewish faith.

I think the simplest explanation is that the Ashkenazi Jews, by the exigencies forced upon them by the rigors of living in a a hostile society, which often would not let them own land, grew to place great value on book learning and the professions, and as a result, intelligence was selected for in their offspring. (meaning: smart people were positively encouraged to marry smart people, and raise smart children) So, Askenazi Jews, as an ethnicity, tend to have a median IQ higher than other ethnicities in their milieu. So they tend to rise to the top in whatever field they put their minds to, science, medicine, the arts, politics, and crime, too. If they bend their will towards good, a lot of good gets done. If they bend their will towards evil, a lot of evil gets done. There's no conspiracy involved, and Judaism is not the root of Jewish Leftism.

In the case of islam, though, the koran and hadiths are very much at the root of jihadism and muslim atrocities, and the perps themselves will happily tell you so.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 10, 2015 12:58 AM (39g3+)

I don't think Jay was doing that. He was making a reasonable argument, outside of that one point. I just think he's wrong in that he's not analyzing the totality of Jewish contributions, the most important of which I pointed out in the first response, that if it weren't for Jews in America this nation would not have been the first with nukes, and that one issue determined who would be the world power in the last half of the 20th century, not to mention if someone else had gotten nukes first who knows what they would have done with that power - as they could have pretty much taken anything they wanted.

The issue of Jewish leftism in America pales in comparison to the issue of America having become the first nuclear power.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 10, 2015 01:07 AM (zc3Db)

294 The fact is that any nation that welcomed Jews has always prospered. In Europe, they use to be into doing that and then kicking the Jews out and taking their stuff, which interestingly almost always resulted in reduced prosperity for said country.

But, as with all things, you have to take the bad with the good. It's just a question of which outweighs which.

302 Well yeah. Overall the scales tip gigantically to the positive for Jewish contributions to the world, especially given their relatively small numbers. The number of nobel prize winners who are Jewish -- and this s from back when it actually meant something -- is vastly disproportionate to their population.

You can also list the number of particularly damaging and troublesome Jews as being disproportionate to their population as well, but that's again a result of their culture and heritage. Jewish people are raised to be literate, toward critical thinking, and with the Judeo- side of the Judeo-Christian heritage, which is very powerful in shaping someone's thinking and approach. When this is bent toward evil, it becomes very evil indeed as in Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud.

Hey, I hadn't noticed who posted it so my comment wasn't aimed at you. Just needed to have fun with the "heated tie wars".

So, just for my personal prejudices, you can pull off a Full Windsor if you're Ronald Reagan, but he could get away with brown and orange suits.

For me it's Half Windsor or Four in Hand. The key to both is the dimple. You want a nice symmetrical dimple just below the knot.

I say this as a guy who wears a tie to a wedding or a funeral a couple of times a year, but I was quasi-Wall Street back in the 80s and the lessons stuck.

349 Well this seems just a bit more personal-oriented than comment-oriented:

When I absolutely had to wear a tie, I got one of those expander deelies, and that worked okay. I like ties, but I don't own a suit and couldn't afford one anyway. If I had a grand lying around I'd use it as a down payment on fixing the wiring in the house. This heap was built in 1919 and the wiring dates back that far, I think. Little bitty drones, the military has been using those for a long time. I knew a tank commander for the local guard who was shipped over for the Iraq rebuilding. In typical military genius planning he ended up doing diplomatic stuff dealing with the local village elders and flying those little drones (or their predecessors) in '05 I think it was. Just a camera and wings and an engine. He had to throw them to get them started, because the launcher was hinky. I'm not sure he even drove in a tank much.

Stately Peon Manor here in Alberta began its existence as a one-room schoolhouse, built in 1915. Was decommissioned as a school in the early 1950's, and converted to a house sometime thereafter. Floor upstairs is all edge-grain fir. I stripped out the wall-to-wall carpet, and the floor beneath is in real tough shape; more (common, not finishing) nailheads per square foot than jihadi Jane's face has zits.

And, for the record, I don't think Jay Guevara is an anti-Semite. I think he made an accurate observation, but used some ill-chosen words in doing so.

I'd have to spend some time with those confusing backwards illustrated definitions of Windsor knots and then the four-in-hand to know the difference, but I've always tied a tie the same way. Easy, the material as someone noted determines size of knot, and depending on material the dimple is not too hard and does look better.

A geologic epoch ago, work took me to Rome regularly, and just the other day Icame across the collection of thin ties I accumulated from a small shop right in front of the Trevi fountain. They are very nice, silk is fantastic. But as the link and others have said, it is better to match them with thinner lapels.

Yeah they are pretty hardcore around here with historic buildings. The local church is 8 steps up to the sanctuary and they can't get the permits to build ramps or anything because its a 19th century historic building.

Its kind of weird, Oregon actually settled earlier than much of the USA because of its coastal location, so it has older buildings than a lot of the country.

The doors have locks that are these box units that are slid into a slot in the wood, one broke and I don't know if we'll ever be able to replace it. Every door is a different size. The front window has like 18 panes, a row of little ones across the top. Its very unique and interesting but all those oddities make it rough to fix anything.

Someone "updated" the house at some point putting tiles on the ceiling of the front room, and godawful 60's wallpaper that is... its hard to describe. Its like someone took reeds and stitched them lengthwise onto paper then pasted that to the wall so you have this corrugated texture that cats love to sharpen their claws on. Its hiedous and stupid and I cannot grok who would do that on purpose. The wallpaper in the study looks like a circus tent or mick Jagger's pants from 1974. There's no outlet in the bathroom whatsoever, just one ceiling fan and light someone apparently added in. My room has no light at all, its all lamps.

Used to be, with the old glass plug fuses, if fuses repeatedly blew, or if a fuse blew, and no spares were on hand, a common occurrence during the Great Depression, people would put a penny in the fuse box, and screw the dead fuse back in. The penny bridge the contacts of the socket (which is the same Edison-base socket as your standard light bulb), and the circuit came good again, albeit with zero overload protection.

I am a big fan of pocket squares; I think they add a touch of colorful class. I wore properly folder white hankies but I also have silk squares in variety of solid colors (including white), over 20 of them. The solid color might match a color in the tie or shirt, but I never wore matching tie and handkerchiefs* with a suit. Now a matching tie and handkerchief is okay with a slacks and jacket outfit, but I never wore that as I never bought a matching tie and handkerchief set.

Fire had burned down to very little, with a scattering of unburned limbs around the perimeter. I policed them up, and heaped them on what's left of the fire. I don't know if they will catch or not. I wore one of the little three-dollar LED headband lamps I bought the other day, and it provided ample light for the job at hand.

433 As a general rule if you stick to 1920s normal electrical load usage the cotton wrapped stuff is still safeish. And most of those (if they are the original intent glass face fuses) should make the circuit OK. Now if someone replaced a 10 amp with a 20 amp over time there could be a problem. The wiring running light-bulbs (switch to LEDs makes it even safer) likely will never be a problem. The window air conditioner plugged in a cotton wrapped wire fed outlet is the one to worry about. And Kitchen electrical in old houses is always suspect and worth checking to see that it has been upgraded.

Posted by: Lauren at December 10, 2015 12:10 AM (Z/8dZ)

I've heard that before. It is Lefty Disinformation.

Your mother is wrong. The Deinstitutionalization of the Mentally Ill -- that very term -- was controversial in the 70s. Newsweek besides others covered it. I believe it was a cover story.

It was a process that started in the Kennedy Administration and was expanded later through court orders and then legislative action.

Reagan as CA governor may have signed the same legislation that 49 other governors did and for the same reasons.

The idea originally was mental health was either a political construct or could be managed as an outpatient using the new "wonder" drugs in community health centers.

The latter were never built ($$) and these people then became the "homeless" a term and concept that became popular in the early 80s....as a way to cudgel Reagan...and cover the Left's tracks.

Our homeless shelters have in some part become these community health centers.

It is a lie of the Left, of course. Ask your mother if Reagan closed all the mental hospitals then why didn't Clinton or Obama reopen them? Why is the "homeless" situation so bad in San Francisco?

If she had those answers or asked those questions she wouldn't be (it sounds like) a liberal.

True, but it is usually long-fiber asbestos, which is the only kind really suitable for weaving/felting into insulating fabric. Unless you powder it, and breathe the airborne dust, it's pretty safe stuff.

The moral panic over asbestos-related lung disease has resulted in a situation wherein having asbestos in one's household is a far greater legal/financial hazard than it is a health hazard.

Aluminum wiring was a fad when the price of copper spiked. It's less safe (a bit), less efficient (a smidge), likely to be laid-in closer to the design edges (a lot), and is more flammable (as in, you can light one but not the other).

If I discovered that half my house had aluminum wiring, I wouldn't necessarily replace it.....but if I had a circuit that was going high-amperage, I'd run it in copper back to the box.

Further iterations involved a secret underground James-Bondian lair, where naked female slaves were chained on narrow ledges above a bubbling pool of pea soup, doomed to ceaselessly ladle it into cans. How diners at the restaurant could order bowl after bowl, little knowing the tragic scenes dozens of feet below them, in The Cavern....

470 Aluminum wiring is still fine for feeders and large circuits. The problem was small gauge with poor connections at receptacles and switch terminals, and as mentioned above, some idiots splicing copper to aluminum (it can be done with the proper technique and materials, mind you, it's just the average idiot would fuck up easily).

Aluminum oxide is a damn good insulator, and aluminum has a low melting point, getting mushy when heated much sooner than copper, which has a high melting point. Copper's oxides are no problem for connections, but with aluminum, it increases resistance, which increases heating, making the connection worse, and thus more heating.

Aluminum would still be fine for those applications, if you could keep idiots from screwing up. Copper is very idiot proof, but aluminum is not.

cooth, absolutely - and I am thankful for those whose labors protect our safe space - er, this great little spot on the web.

The thing about central coast north of SB - aside from real estate or vineyard/land prices, it hasn't changed *that* much in decades. Oh yes, big changes (200+ wineries now in Paso, dozens in southern SLO County, SB County), a booming epicurean thing with specialty foods, etc.

The LA megalopolis folks seem to almost all stop at SB - which is sort of unrecognizable now, at least central/downtown, for those who spent time there before the 90s. Santa Barbara is like a filter that stops 90% of travellers.

Which is fine. Central coast north of that remains sleepy and uncrowded.

One time we ad libbed a short trip to Lexington, NC at the end of a golf trip to Roanoke. Had to go to the BBQ mecca. Managed to hit 3 places in 18 hours (dinner, lunch next day, then take-out from a third). So it can be done. Just takes planning, commitment, discipline .....

One of the weird ways that the fiancee and I keep ourselves occupied on road trips is finding road signs that can be read as names and telling stories about them. Nipomo Tefft is a favorite. He's a young guy of very mixed race, who hangs out with the cool crowd that includes Maricopa Bakersfield (a blonde who is a bit space-y). Nipomo can hold his own in a fight and is frequently the character who solves a mystery.

When we're on full-on-tourist jaunts, we'll take pictures of such road signs so that I can use them 20 years from now as chapter headings in a novel.

As for the 'sloppy' part, that's the word I was told about why men in BA do not wear them. I'm not agreeing with them, like I said, I like button downs (I'm American) but I have seen it first hand. Fria be means that it can easily be dislodged and become airborne fibers.

As I recall most asbestos bearing building and industrial products involve chrysotile or crocidolite asbestos.

Serpentone rock common in parts of CA are full of chrysotile.

495 AL wire is readily available in the larger sizes, minimum being #6 AWG. But it's pretty much extinct in the smaller sizes. You might be able to find some #8, but the 60C ampacity is only 30A, same as #10 copper, and no one would use it. I mention that because I think I remember seeing some #8 AL in a catalog, but I doubt anyone would carry it if they still make it.

The 60C ampacity for #10 AL is just 25A, and only 15A for #12 Al. So for for a 20A branch circuit, you'd need #10, which is a little big to work with.

And manufacturers have been known to fuck up as well. I remember some recalls for some products where the terminals were rated as CO/ALR, but they were incompatible with AL wiring, corroding over time.

And the worse one I remember was some company, I want to say under the brand name ITE but I'm not sure, sold panelboards where the busbar material was incompatible with the metal used in some of their own breakers. You know that "plug on" type of breakers that snap on little "stabs" on the busbars.

Anyway, that connection would corrode and cause heating and arcing. Big recall there.

496 Friable is what they call it? Thankfully I've never had to deal with it. I assume all insulation becomes brittle over time.

Posted by: derit at December 10, 2015 02:46 AM (jT+gh)

Well asbestos is a mineral, or rather a whole class of somewhat similar minerals. The crystals have excellent cleavage on two, or perhaps three planes, which are not parallel to each other, but which are parallel to the long axis of the crystal. Just like the fibers in a piece of wood are parallel to the long axis of the tree it came from.

It's my understanding that short fiber asbestos, which is the kind that can get airborne, and inhaled into one's lungs, is carcinogenic mainly because it can pierce cell walls, and cause cell damage that way, and cancer arise because of constant over-stimulation of the immune system. And maybe I'm totally wrong. And apparently smokers are far more susceptible to getting cancer from airborne asbestos than non-smokers.

There are reported incidents of individuals getting lung cancer from a single exposure to airborne asbestos. But then there are instances of people getting lung cancer with no proximate cause being noted. Sometimes, shit just happens.

The old knob and tube wiring I have seen had copper wire wrapped with an asphalt-type insulation with fiber in it that might have been jute or cotton. Not much point in using asbestos in an asphaltic binder, since asphalt is itself combustible. Now, old heating appliances, like toasters, kettles, waffle irons, bowl heaters, and suchlike, often had cords with two stranded-copper conductors, each insulated by a thin coating of natural rubber, then wrapped in asbestos "yarn" - unwoven long-fiber asbestos cord or ribbon, and the whole encased in a woven-cotton fabric tube, commonly with a houndstooth pattern to it. I have such a cord on my grilled cheese sammich press. And as long as the asbestos stays confined inside its cotton sheath, it's perfectly safe.

Central coast geographical trivia item as a sign-off.

The "west side" of the Paso Robles area (west of the 101 highway)has an area known as Adelaida. Odd name, certainly not Spanish in origin.

Mercury mines were once a major activity in the area. Miners came from Australia ("diggers") to work these mines; enough from the Adelaide area that "Adelaida" came to be the name for this area. I believe the county reservoir there (Lake Nascimento?) has no fish/fishing is banned due to the .... mercury content of the fish.

Beautiful area, rolling hills, marine cool/fog slips in via the gaps and passes, lots of great vineyards and still lots of walnut and other nut orchards.

And with that, from the truly sublime, to the dark and creepy .... the daily dose of a Joseph Goebbels bio that is quite good (Longerich). We're in 1927, Goebbels is Gauleiter of Berlin, and You Know Who is starting to dig his style and flair for propaganda.

501 For those who haven't seen my bitching before.....if you have a company and rent a guy a tractor -- and he ends up rolling into a ditch....

If you're in California, there's a lawyer saying that the tractor was unsafe, another one saying your training program was inadequate, another one suing the ditch owner, another one saying you should have provided ditch warnings, another one saying that the ditch was contaminated when your tractor rolled into it....

If you're in a state where someone sane may want to do business, folks tell the renter, "looks like you just lost your deposit."

506 rhomboid - yeah, Federal Pacific reputedly pulled a Volkswagen to sneak a bad breaker design past UL. The breakers don't necessarily trip fully. There's also a problem with the configuration of the panel bus bar, but this design was also seen in other old panels.

As it turns out, only the stab-lok breaker boxes were death-on-wheels. Other old FPE breaker and fuse systems are still considered some of the best there were. Worth looking at prolly, but just seeing their initials on the service door should not set off an immediate household emergency. There's your good news for the day.

533 When we tripled the size of our "estate" 50 years ago, we followed that formula of adding up every possible doo-dad we might ever install, and ended up with...160 amps. How things have changed.

Going to gas clothes dryer and water heater took the strain off the electric, and now I'm thinking that may be adequate. Lucky, because "tradesmen" have suddenly become damn hard to find around here, and I can wire but don't really care to get caught cutting into Edison's mains. At the rate I'm going, I may have to learn.

My next problem is, if we win that lottery for a great big gas range, I'll need to put in a larger main gas line from the street, and I don't think the GasCo does that for free. With the hydronic boiler, gas water heater, and dryer, I'm gas-maxed. Plus I will have to learn to cook all over again, but hey, it's a hobby.

All the guys we used to trade work with have retired. The skilled relatives have shuffled off this mortal coil. And my sister's buds from the refinery and hospital who used to do side-jobs, all have grandchildren now, so, no more need for money. The crowning indignity was when my master-HVAC pal closed his practice to teach at the trade school branch of comm collidge, so he could afford to keep his health bennies. Modern life. This is why Palestine looks so good.

540 It is a rite of passage for every NYT editor / publisher to get a NYC carry permit : It is extremely dangerous to walk from the door of the office to the limo to the door of the doorman building . The right of the poor guy who cleans his office and goes home at 4AM thru the mean streets of NYC , his right to protect himself , well he can go whistle .

544 About that NY times chart what happened in 2009 to cause the skyrocketing deaths??
Did America do some stupid?

545 Hm, about that NYT graph. It started, what, the day after 9/11? So it discounted the thousands killed at the hands of Muslim mass murderers in order to make it look like Islamists and non-Islamists kill in roughly equal numbers. It's just like a climatologist talking about global temperatures starting the week after the Little Ice Age had ended.

546 Actually, your comparison of Islamist mass murders in America isn't fair. We're not talking 1% vs. 99%.

We're talking .5% (that is, one HALF of one percent) vs. 99.5% of the population.
