Ted Cruz Takes The Lead in Iowa

For months, I have doubted Ted Cruz' theory of the race, which was just draft-driving forever behind a big truck called Trump.

But it's just begun paying off some. Cruz now leads Trump, 24-19.

Marco Rubio, meanwhile, is just behind Trump at 17.

Ben Carson continues to fall.

Jeb Bush lost his shoes and his glasses. He'll bring them, so he has them. The firework went off in his hand. It stings a bit, so he'll come down to the clinic and he'll bring his nub.

16 Cruz's plan has always been to pick up the people who fall off the various bandwagons. He's the natural fit for former Carsonites and of course those who end their flirtation with Trump.

Also, unlike Carson, he's unlikely to be a flash in the pan candidate. He's also unlikely to have any Rick Perry style gaffes. He's in a good position right now.

Not surprised because Cruz is running a first class campaign.

Yesterday I went to Trump's twitter. It reads like an average joe's twitter. And he allows anybody at all on his feed,

Then I went to Ted Cruz's twitter feed and it was well organized with consistent timely tweets, without the clutter of the jerkoffs responding.

Cruz calls for "immigration reform", too. Except that the version touted by Cruz involves hugely increasing the amount of H-1B visas from what is already a very large number.

So instead of you losing your job to an illegal immigrant who works cheaper, you'll have the comfort and satisfaction of instead losing your job to a legal visa immigrant who works cheaper. Isn't that all better now?

I think Cruz the guy is even better than Cruz the policies. At the end of the day, most "policies" have to adapt to the needs of the circumstance, but the guy needs to have core values in the right places, which I think the Cruzinator has in spades.
Unfortunately I half agree as to presentation. I wouldn't say "slimy" so much as coming across a bit too smarmy, particularly for the suffragetes.

118 "Cruz having been an internationally ranked debater may not mean much when you're trying to appeal to people who want smaller gov't but don't cut their benefits."

Actually, I think it has helped him a lot. When you watch him during the debates, every point he makes is in service of a larger narrative. He ties everything together with a nice little bow so he comes across as the guy who knows what it takes to fix things. So you're nodding along even when he's discussing something that may not be your pet issue but come away with the feeling that "That Cruz guy gets it!"

The problem with this is that it does seem calculating and those with high BS meters are offput by it. However, that's not really who he's trying to reach. The High BS meter people already like him for his positions, even if they find him personally grating.

It's about time we turned LIVs against our corrupt aristocracy.

They control broadcast media, they control print media, they control entertainment, they torture American children into orcs in the academy, they control the bureaucracy utterly, they control the courts, and their multitude of lies have all gained traction from repetition. The second amendment is in very real danger. The first has already been damaged over the last 15 years.

The left has dictated the direction and cadence of political action since the Clinton administration, without a break. The GOPe is an arm of their operation. They must be destroyed.

Trump has the numbers, he has the money, he has real cross-party appeal, and he can pull back the curtain on the left's exploitative game in a way no career politician can. It has to be Trump. It HAS to be Trump.

186 "did someone punch Obama in the eye? was he high? he looks weird"

He looked like an apathetic sock puppet. Which may be because ValJar Binks' right arm was up his anus to her shoulder, with her hand working his mouth. His eyes were lifeless, like he just didn't give a shit, no matter what his lips were saying.

And that gray-out-of-a-bottle on his hair doesn't look any more convincing than Mitch's tan-in-a-can did.

189 Cruz dominating Iowa, might mean to Conservatives are consolidating on him (Sorry Jindal, Huck, and Santorum); with the change agents locked on Trump (bye bye Rand).

That leaves the GOPe crowd still twisting (Jeb, Rubiom Kaische, Christy, Carly, Lindsey, etc.), which I am convinced is a result of Jeb's early strategy to muddy the waters until FL.

191 I mean pox-on-both-houses voters are beyond giving a fark about likeability, that's why they are paying attention to issues and going outside the establishment. So Cruz could be vile in his person, but appealing to them. Problem is that on immigration, he has a weak position.

I actually havent watched a Trump speech. I wasn't overwhelmed by his debate performance

but a couple of days ago a reporter posed a question to him about the San Bernardino jihadis and described them as "normal people" and "regular people"

have you seen that? Trump didnt bombast and pontificate. But he looked at that reporter as thought they had lost their mind and challanged the premise

it was the first time I saw him use "another gear", not the sneering heckler, the showman

I have to say, I liked it. Politicians dont talk like that, or think like that. I liked it

195 Cruz is also beholden to whoever is bankrolling his candidacy and who bankrolled his Senate run.

The major asset of Trump is that while he might take some money for people or corps, he don't owe them his candidacy or nomination.

He's owned mostly by Trump and his family.

I'll take that over some Wall street rich boy or some other bankrolling who I don't know anything about and who could care less about most of the country.

That's the lesson coming out of this race.

People are tired of the hidden wealthy picking the candidates we have to choose from.

I didn't see it, but I am not surprised. The more Obama, Hillary, and their media surrogates lie about blatantly obvious reality, the more people seek refuge in the truth and those who speak it.

That's why - unless the left reverses course of the last eight years and can begin straight-talking - Trump's potential upside is, while not limitless, but it is yuge.

Jeb!'s handlers strategy could still work, but-

it would require all of the wannabes and never-wases

And that would assume all of the free GOPe types wouldn't consolidate around Rubio.

I hope Carson see the light and bows out. He'll keep dropping as his comments about the Middle East show that he's just not ready.

That'll leave Trump, Cruz, and Rubio as the big dogs. With Jeb! as the little wiener dog trotting behind them.

Where did I say he means what he says?

I said he believes what he says and it comes from the gut. What is motives are and what he may secretly plan, no one could know. About him or anyone else.

But he is articulating a message that is consistent and he has taken to heart enough so he can ad lib all day. And some of the stuff he reacts to and how he reacts cannot be scripted in advance.

Will he do what he says? Who knows for sure? That can be said for any candidate to ever run for President since Washington.

Will he be able to get what he wants done? Again, who knows?

What about what he's said in the past? He wasn't running for office then and he had plenty of reason to say what he thought others would agree with.

As to specific stuff he said before about this or that? He did clearly warn about immigration and terrorism. I can let slide the thing about single payer because that's what we have essentially now. Maybe make it better and more free market and try to drive prices down and guess who would probably be good at thinking of ways to do that?

So we shall see. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Sure, he is building a marketing strategy around the outsider viewpoint right now. That's what Trump does, he markets to an underserved market segment. Does that mean I believe he will follow through once he gets in office? I have no idea and I don't think anyone else does either. Hell, I doubt Trump knows.

Any immigration policy that picks skills over family reunification "daisy chains" is preferable.

Indeed. I am shocked that Ted Cruz, demonized for attempts at shutting down the left's blessed government, is now being called a RINO or a "Cuckservative".

Rubio is the Women's candidate.

The very old and the very young.

The ones in the middle have seen him before and know he's not reliable.

256 The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from December 3 to 6, 2015 with
425 Iowa voters likely to attend the Republican presidential caucuses in February 2016. This sample has a
margin of error of +4.8 percent. The poll was conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute in
West Long Branch, NJ.

Read the fine print. Less than 1000 likely voters. CROOKED poll.

257 @251 - had a family get together yesterday. Every one of my wife's family is pretty much in for Trump except for my mother-in-law, who thinks he's "crazy."

To put my mother-in-law in perspective, she calls herself a conservative but if you get her position on pretty much anything she sounds like a liberal. She then proceeds to get upset with us calling her a liberal, heh. It can actually be pretty fun, sometimes.

And everyone in my family is an evangelical up to and including my wife's cousin who's a pastor of a church.

258 I'm not sure what happens to the evangelical vote if Trump gets the
nomination. For the last several election cycles, evangelicals have made
up the single largest voting block when it comes to turn-out for
Republican candidates. Would they turn out for Trump? My gut says no.
But maybe my gut is wrong.

Trump may not be religious but he is respectful of people who do take their Christian faith seriously. And, as someone said above, the Lord does work in mysterious ways:-P

259 I think a lot of the "positions" Trump has had during his life were just throw away lines to get what he wanted in business or fame.

I don't think he really thought about policy because he didn't need to. He was about making money.

I doubt he really thought much about policy positions before he entered the race.

However, I think he's thought about "positions" since entering the race because he's had to. I also think he's had his eyes opened to some of the real problems facing this country that he's never personally had to deal with because of the life he's lived.

I think Trump has realized during this campaign that this country is in real danger and he doesn't want to see it happen. He has children and grand children i assume he loves as much as anyone else.

I am voting for Cruz in the primary probably but I'd vote for Trump in the general if he makes it.

260 When faced with a demon from Hell, Trump will look like the Archangel Michael.

You all do know the "Evangelicals didn't come out to vote for Mitt Romney" meme is a lie?

So don't worry about them. When the push comes to shove, they'll go with the man with fire in the belly and willingness to take responsibility and stand up.

263 Here's the difference of Cruz v. Any other Rep. candidate. Once he grabs a voter, they're staying put. He won't lose any, just gain. Bank on it... this one is over.

If you think that's naïve, consider his approach to the primary election. He is the most organized, and has built a strong network across all the early primary states. He thinks before he talks and usually has something impressive (and more importantly, relevant/substantive to say).

The media and his peers in congress will likely up their rhetoric in opposition of him now that he's a frontrunner....and that will have the opposite effect from what's intended.

267 Look at the RCP averages, and remember trendlines are more predictive of early primary results than results during this period.

If anything, Cruz is peaking too soon.

Looks like Jeb and the also-rans are done. Probably comes down to Cruz and Rubio.

268 BTW the CNN/ORC poll seems to have a lot of junk, a lot of people are throwing that one out.

269 Well, CNN's IA poll came out today too with TRUMP at 33% and Cruz at 20%.

Plus they found that TRUMP voters are the most definite: 53% say they are definitely voting for him.

Posted by: Aslan's Girl at December 07, 2015 05:02 PM (xetep)

270 Let's face it, both sides agree Cruz is the sharpest guy to walk into almost any room. He's like Michael Jordan described those moments at his peak... Everything seems to be going in slow motion when you're at the top of your game. It was child's play for MJ and it was fun to watch him then.

Now imagine Cruz... and remember he's no dilettante, he also prepares, strategizes various possible outcomes, responses from others... The ball is moving in slow motion for him. He's having fun with it. Who can deny him a little smirk or grin when all his hard work pays off. He's earned it.

Then there's his competition... If the national polls rate Congress on job performance down in the single digits or very low double digits, how much worse would they be if they only polled here? These are the people he's up against. Most of us would be hard pressed not to laugh out loud at pablum spit up by GOPe types and their comrades across the isle. Grant Cruz the courtesy of the infrequent grin he can't help but show in those ludicrous and tedious hearings.

Ace, you put the Cruz move down as "draft-driving" behind Trump. That's a good analogy. At this point it seems more like the Donald has taken the all the slings and arrows, all the blows a big blocking back would take breaking through the line, making a hole for the guy with the football behind him to get to the open field. Either way, it looks like Cruz can see a little daylight.

We'll see what he makes of it.

272 If the poll is of registered voters, it's worthless. Likely voters is better, depending on the methodology. This poll is likely caucus goers, so its the sharpest pencil. MOE 4.5 %, FWIW

273 Trump is too immoral to be president. He is not a moral man. Period. Full stop. See Gladiator.

Posted by: Singing Hatchet at December 08, 2015 01:51 AM (J+XbI)

274 Cruz has spent most of his efforst building a solid ground game in the first 25 or so primary states. Far more effective than what Trump has done.

Trump has focused on the national spotlight, which in previous campaigns recently has resulted in a united front (Democrats, Media (but I repeat myself), RINO's and even other Conservative R candidates. Resulting in each frontrunner, in turn, being destroyed and leaving only the Most Moderate pretend-R standing.

Cruz has been playing the long game, and doing so effectively.

He's positioned himself to win the Evangelical vote away from Santorum, Huckabee, and more recently Carson. Carson, btw, is done. As done as all of the "establishment" picks save only Rubio - who will eventually lose to either Trump or Cruz on Immigration.

Cruz is also the clear choice of Conservative Republicans.

Trump has the Populist appeal, at the moment, but if Trump's campaign implodes, which it might on any given day, then Trump's supporters will flock to Cruz, and certainly NOT to Rubio.

Trump is still the frontrunner in the polls, and has a real chance at the nomination. But, the clear favorite at this point has to be Ted Cruz.
