Our thanksgiving was very nice, with just hubby, me and the kids. And the dogs. And the cat. Most pleasant Thanksgiving we have had in a while. No one brought up leftist talking points, we laughed at each others jokes, and my cranberry sauce is still in the fridge, because I keep forgetting about it. I'm sure there is a Freudian explanation for that, but I don't think I want to know what it is.

Used to say that the dishonor of watching The Matrix and liking it, could only be expired by watching the entire Star Wars Saga in one sitting. Thanks. "Don't Look Back" was shot on 16mm B&W film, so DVD should be adequate. I don't see how BluRay would be much of an enhancement.

Regular DVD is around 4 Gigs (single sided. Regular Blu-Ray is around 25 Gigs, single sided. High quality movies in 1080p can't really be squeezed into 4 Gigs (they can but a lot of info is lost) so they are best presented on Blu-Ray.

I'm sure it will be fine but in actuality, black and white film needs higher resolution to look good than color film. WIth color movies, the colors have a large effect on the picture quality and sharpness. With black and white you only have gray scales and need higher resolution to make the picture feel to be of the same quality. Of course, you are saving info by not having colors but that is likely more than offset by the need for higher resolution.

Didn't hurt that Lucas also presented his characters not as anachronistic stick figure relics, but as people who fit into the zeitgeist of the late 1970s; it was easy to imagine Luke, Han , Lando or even Chewbacca tearing it up on the disco floor. ;-)
I often think of "Logan's Run" as the last old-school sci-fi flick, and Star Wars as the first of a new wave of the genre.

Even at the time, the best thing about Logan's Run was the 5 minutes with Farrah Fawcett (Majors) in it, with Jenny Agutter making the rest of the movie bearable. Other than that, the story was beyond silly (even then) and made no sense, whatsoever. The laser surgery was cool but that was about it and that was overshadowed because it was Farrah's time onscreen, anyway.

By the way, I'm binge-watching The Man In The High Castle this weekend, and it's fucking awesome. Perfectly captures the creepy paranoia of living in a fascist state. The pilot was decent, but the subsequent episodes have really been exceptional.

But Buck Rogers was never intended to be serious sci-fi. It began as a newspaper comic strip, right? basically falls into the genre: "space opera". So the fact that the characters speak in the vernacular of the time the movie is produced is a feature, not a bug.

You are wise. Horses are expensive, fragile and time consuming. I freak out every time I leave the farm, for fear of all the things that have gone wrong, usually while I was out for just a couple hours trying to have fun. Knock on wood, no major disasters for a long time. I have the place pretty well horse proofed, the vet says all my troubles are really weird, because I have thought of and planned against all the normal stuff.
And the pies are out of the oven and it's almost pie-thirty!

But it would've been weird to have Han launch the Falcon into hyperspace, only to power out of it half-an-hour protagonist-time, but thirty Vader-years, later, during which time ol' Darth would've consolidated control of the galaxy, refurbished 3P0 into an Amidala clone, and committed unspeakable genocide on the forest moon of Endor.
Come to think of it, that's an interesting idea ... you can power up to near-light or FTL speed to escape your pursuer, but then you cede control of events and arrive at a point in the future where your enemy has been able to work his plans at will.

I don't recall reading all of Asimov's robot stories, but the ones I did seemed to be basically logic puzzles, contrived around the "three laws of robotics". OK to read, but too cerebral for the movies.

Had the same budget and special effects been afforded to a quality re-boot of that story, it would have done just as well. There's quite a lot to it. People in 1977 were pretty damn hungry for heroes. Having been subjected to a series of zombie-like reanimations, all copied from something else, I doubt there's any future for it, at least for some time. I had high hopes for the Burroughs stories, but, alas.

Relativity applies when moving at or near the speed of light in normal space. The "convention" in science fiction is that if you jump into hyperspace, or use a space warp, or wormhole, you can cover vast distances in near-zero time, from either the travelers' or stay-behinds' frame of reference.

It's not just that. It's the fact that the speed of light is finite. When the Enterprise is two light years away from some place they can't have normal conversations with them in "real time". Star Trek was based in a totally Newtonian universe with an infinite speed of light - which is funny seeing how their big thing was "warp speed". It was sci-fi thought up by people who, evidently, knew nothing about science ... or just didn't care.
That said, I liked the original Star Trek series even with these problems. There wasn't much else to pick from.

Later authors tried to fix it, and some exceeded to some extent, but there are still many absurdities involved.
I do get a giggle out of people who try to form "Jedi Orders," seems fairly popular (for a fanboy club) in England.

I, Robot could be done very well. But, it doesn't lend itself to the standard Hollywood format. To do I, Robot, you can't just pick one bit and present it out of context in a single movie. It would require something like a series, possibly movies, but better suited to TV, I suspect. Present each and every story as a self contained episode and do all of them (well, most. Some might be redundant). There aren't really any "central characters" in I', Robot.... just a couple of recurring ones.

Which could get interesting. What if, for example, shipping semiconductor chips with geometries less than 60 nm (new current generation is roughly 10 nm) through FTL resulted in bricks? And necessary dopants weren't available at the other end?
Would you FTL the dopants and the designs, or slow-freight completed chips, knowing they'd get their 10 years late, but in bulk?

Bradbury's had a few. 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' was originally one of his books before Disney turned it into a movie. I've heard there's quite a difference between the two, though. Farenheit 451 had a movie. And Bradbury's 'The Martian Chronicles' had a TV mini-series made out of it.
Asimov has had one short story (about a planet with multiple suns where nightfall rarely happens) turned into a movie, but apparently it did so poorly that I'd probably be hard-pressed to run it down. Clarke had 2001 and 2010, but I don't think any of his others were turned into movies. Heinlein had someone borrow the title of one of his novels, but I don't think anything else of his has been done.
As for the two that you mentioned as getting lots of movies made - King could vomit into a printing press, put a title on the result, and sell an absurd number of copies. He's so popular that it's little surprise so many of his books have been turned into movies. As for PKD, afaik the trend of turning his books into movies seems to be a recent thing that started well after he'd passed on. It's possible that we'll see the same with Bradbury a couple of decades after he dies.

That happens in the WH40k universe all the time - large-distance space travel is done by going through an alternate dimension called the Warp, where time is meaningless. Sometimes Warp travel isn't planned right and space fleets, for example, can arrive before the battle started or decades later.

Exactly -- in 2013, they were saying that building a fab for that generation would cost about $12B. I don't suppose a colony wants to chase that high too hard while they're still investing in air supply. So do they keep money in terraforming, security, life support, and raw materials extraction with 20+-year-old tech, or do they plop down $12B for a fab that'll be obsolete before they run their first wafer?

Just about any practical colonial government would make do with what they had on hand.
Now, if they were saddled with progressives, the fab would be built over the objections of the populace on the basis that the newer tech would "save energy".
It would, of course, be a boondoggle and the fab would never actually have any chips run on it's line.
Meanwhile the money necessary for maintaining the colony would be wasted resulting in the deaths of nearly all colonists, save the progressive "leadership" who would have booked passage off world as soon as they had cash in hand.
Cash that was supposed to go to colony maintenance and building the fab facility, I might add.

I had a story idea that worked with something along those lines. A sub-FTL colony sleeper ship goes dark in transit to its destination. While it's in transit, humanity develops an FTL drive, and gets attacked by a xenocidal race of aliens. Humanity doesn't know exactly where the ship is located, but knows where it will arrive, and that it will arrive well after humanity has been wiped out by the aliens. So the humans leave some basic infrastructure in place at the destination world, and warnings about the aliens (who then for religious reasons conveniently leave the area of space that humanity lived in) so that the colonists have a chance to rebuild humanity and win the war the next time around.

Well, I am not sure. It is an interesting question because as you get older and gain perspective your appreciation of bond movies changes. Everyone kind of has an affinity for the Bond they grow up with but as they age they outgrow their Bond or get a greater appreciation of the Bond franchise and the actors that portrayed him. I grew up in between Moore and Dalton, initialli I liked Moore more than Dalton. Never cared for Brosnan when he was Bond, but I like him more now.

If I can add some comment -- I don't remember my 30th birthday as being worthy of note.....but I do remember my 40th, because I said, "goddamit, I want a doctor who knows his ass from a hole in the ground" and changed a bunch of medical things. My new primary care doctor sent me in for a sleep study that diagnosed serious obstructive sleep apnea and the treatment totally changed my life for the better. My new LASIK meant that I could see 24/7 for the first time in my life. And my new regular medications gives me some hope that I won't randomly drop dead for a while.
The broader point is that a 30th birthday sounds more important than it is -- 'cause 30 is just a number. But any birthday (or other calendar day) where your daughter decides to make a difference can be very memorable, indeed.

Pick any two. You can't have all three together. 1) and 2) are pretty firmly established. 2) is about the nature of this thing we can spacetime, and if it's wrong, the nature has gone to a lot of trouble to fool us. It would be maliciously deceptive. And without 1), well, reality itself is a contradiction.
Now, General Relativity has some tricks, (but there never is any FTL, that is something moving faster than a null path -- it's just that null paths can be very strange compared to flat spacetime), but causality is always the killer.

I actually consider Never Say Never to be a strong Bond flick.....despite being Thunderball II. And The Saint just never had the brutal "I can beat your confession out of you, laugh, then shoot you" that Bond needs.

There are no current theories (AFAIK) to allow FTL in observable dimensions. OTOH, there are several theories in Physics that postulate other dimensions. Accordingly, any plausible FTL transport would involve isolating a pocket XYZ+T, moving it along dimension Q, and re-melding it.

well, you have to keep in mind all of the essential elements, villains, villainettes, gadgets, travel, violence, bond girls. In Golden Eye the villainette was hot, the bond girl was hot, and both knew their place in the movie and as actresses; they were both lucky to be there and should look hot and do as told.

I rate Goldeneye pretty damn high. Top 5 at least... maybe top 3. As a Bond fan from the 60's and picky about the movies, I want to say that it sucks and is no match for the classics. But, I can't. It would be a lie. It rocked. It was a great blend of everything I wanted from a Bond flick. They haven't come close to matching it since then.

Bond movies have had SEVERAL formulas they were supposed to follow, and for a while the PC changes were seriously impacting them.
Bond is a badass. He kills people to earn his keep; he tortures people when it will give him a momentary advantage; he lies, cheats, seduces, and terrorizes according to a strict "fuck the wogs" moral code. That's not to say he's racist -- his grief at the death of Quarrel in Dr. No is sincere -- but there are those on his team........and others.
You could contrast this with the current MSM story that "refugees" who aren't refugees, "from Syria" who are from somewhere else, "women and children" who are military-aged, "need resettlement" when they need arms to resist at home.....

Even what's his face as Boris worked for me. Judy Dench I don't rate as M... but, she's not in it much, so screw it. Brosnan gets heavy points as Bond for Goldeneye alone.

I don't know enough of his work. I'm referring to Zelazny's "Lord of Light" -- I really think it could be cinematic as hell if someone unwraps it correctly. Jackson's LOTR made something previously thought unfilmable into a masterwork -- he could unwrap the onion onto the screen for "Lord of Light" -- although (as demonstrated by The Hobbit) he could also make it a pageant of spectacle, uncoupled from the plot.

OTOH, (and admittedly this is anecdotal) there was the report of the Italian woman raped by a "refugee" who was pressured to keep silent about it by her pro-immigrant group, but eventually reported it and exposed the group. When it becomes personal enough, maybe people will come to their senses and stop being such passive suicidal dupes.

But they are not behaving as before. They are not repelling the invasion. They are dying out by attrition in the place of their ancestors. There may or may not be a quick fix, but they do not seem to be implementing any sort of fix. That is what is so sad.
