Overnight Open Thread (28 Nov 2015)

Don't get this article confused with the AoS HQ barrel. What happens as decades pass in a whiskey barrel.

Beef

Sweet. I see a lot of steaks in my future. Beef prices fall as fattened cattle go to market.

American Generosity

Shlomo Rechnitz has done more for vets than Obama (how's that VA fix coming as the VA spends millions promoting Obamacare). Businessman buys 400 soldiers meals during a layover in Ireland.

Icebreakers

Wait a damn minute. I thought the arctic was supposed to be ice free and with all of these super hot months evah this year, why the hell is the President seeing the need for icebreakers?

Everything Wrong With Star Wars

With Kevin Smith.

Understanding Military Strategy

Sad that the author on understanding military strategy only focuses on GOP candidates and no mention of the epic fails of President Ambiguous Pivot.

WTF Switzerland?

People having sex with horses is on the rise in Switzerland. I was hoping that it meant having sex with folks that look like Sarah Jessica Parker but sadly that wasn't the case. Does this mean there is a shortage of goats for the newly arrived "refugees"?

100 Years Of Cocktails

Europe

I think I'd rather root out the problem and stop it than learn to live with Islamist terror.

But if Europe enjoys a few months of relative calm then it will be back to business as usual for the political classes.

And their subjects will, for the most part, go along with it. The chances are that the next attack won't be on their country; and if it is, the chances are it won't be their city. And even if it is their city, the chances are it'll be someone else who's executed at a rock concert, or blown to bits in a restaurant, and not they or their loved ones.

That's just fine with Europe's political classes, and the continent's liberal-left establishment. They would prefer the public response to the next atrocity to be more vigils and more hashtags, rather than angry marches on the Élysée Palace, the Houses of Parliament or the Bundestag.

Size Matters Not

Magazine size has little effect on mass shootings.

Kleck identified and examined 88 mass shooting incidents in which more than six people were killed or wounded for the 20 year period from 1994 through 2013. He looked at incidents with more than six victims because six or fewer people could be shot with a traditional six-shot revolver with no large-capacity magazine needed. So he wanted to look at those events in which possession of large-capacity magazines would be most relevant.

Even with this restrictive definition of a mass shooting, Kleck found that large capacity magazines – defined as holding over 10 rounds - were used in only 21 of the 88 incidents (24%). So, in 76% of the incidents, a large-capacity magazine ban would have made no difference in any event.

The FBI

The FBI is starting to sound like the FBI that showed up in Die Hard. I'm sure if Sharyl Attkisson asks the Chinese for a copy of her lost FBI file, they can provide it.

Cat Video

Lions after eating their Thanksgiving meal.

12 Hey all you 'rons and 'ettes!

I hope you are all well fed, well shopped, and well rested for the next week!

Our thanksgiving was very nice, with just hubby, me and the kids. And the dogs. And the cat. Most pleasant Thanksgiving we have had in a while. No one brought up leftist talking points, we laughed at each others jokes, and my cranberry sauce is still in the fridge, because I keep forgetting about it. I'm sure there is a Freudian explanation for that, but I don't think I want to know what it is.

13 Happy Caturday!

I managed to disarm a "social media propaganda bomb" without causing too much of a ruckus at dinner with friends.

The generic non-political people are really absorbing the left's propaganda thoughtlessly. It's very annoying.

They even kind of realize it's propaganda and absorb it anyway.

They were yapping at that annoying level that the little snowflakes do so that you just cannot tune them out. They are going on and on about how stupid Trump is and how stupid we are for not wanting to accept Syrians and equating muslims with terrorists yada yada yada. The blonde snowflake sitting next to me says, "Why shouldn't we accept these Syrians?" I say loud enough to be heard and a bit more, "Because they want to fucking kill us!" That shut them up enough for me to eat in peace.

108 Chemjeff, we might have to work out arrangements for you to take some accelerated learning courses down here in Texas?

Spend a 3 or 4 day weekend here in Galveston. By the end of your visit, we'll have you fully up to speed on about 80% of what you'll need to know to survive in the kitchen.

And your production therefrom.

Also, I'll get you out to the pistol range, and time permitting, a good rifle range, too. I'll arrange a nearly endless variety of guns for you to try, and will bear-down hard on getting you some very good basic instruction.... by time we're done with a half-day at the range, I'll have you reliably shooting into the 9 ring or better, on a B-27 target at 7 and 10 yards.

Plus, there'll be plenty of adult libations, premium cigars and introductions to some noteable folks in the shooting and cigar worlds.

In other words, a bit of Moron Boot Camp.

Cooking and marksmanship.....two fields that just scream out for quality coaching and mentoring.

You Tube videos have their uses, but also, limitations.

And when you're done here, Iris will have shown you two dishes that no one else you know, will know how to make.

Steak and Guiness Pie, and Irish Twice Baked Potatos (in duck fat).

Don't worry though, I'll have you mastering a good steak, roast and bacon, too.

Plus. Texas. Need you any more inducement than that?

Well, in that case, we can wrap a Texas MoMeet around it, right.

Something for after winter breaks into early Spring, I think.

Polliwog and I have tried to get one off the ground before, but the effort ran out of time and steam before really getting going.

Maybe Spring of '16 will be the right time for Teh Horde to descend on the burgs South of Houston.

Of course, the number of incidents reported is probably small because most of the horses don't consider this abuse and refuse to rat on their lovers.

Who else would be reporting this stuff, anyway? The horse-fuckers, themselves? Consumers of horse-fucking videos (which must be seeing pretty brisk sales in Switzerland)?

given that so many people in the country are involved with equestrian activities.

Regular DVD is around 4 Gigs (single sided. Regular Blu-Ray is around 25 Gigs, single sided. High quality movies in 1080p can't really be squeezed into 4 Gigs (they can but a lot of info is lost) so they are best presented on Blu-Ray.

I'm sure it will be fine but in actuality, black and white film needs higher resolution to look good than color film. WIth color movies, the colors have a large effect on the picture quality and sharpness. With black and white you only have gray scales and need higher resolution to make the picture feel to be of the same quality. Of course, you are saving info by not having colors but that is likely more than offset by the need for higher resolution.

Didn't hurt that Lucas also presented his characters not as anachronistic stick figure relics, but as people who fit into the zeitgeist of the late 1970s; it was easy to imagine Luke, Han , Lando or even Chewbacca tearing it up on the disco floor. ;-)

171 I get it, some people didn't like Star Wars.

But it was great, good versus evil, no shades of grey, really. Well, except for Han, he shot first, but redeemed himself.

Redemption is a good story, too.

And then they handed out medals at the end.

It created a whole different universe that seemed quite real.

I can't figure out the huge excitement over a franchise that hasn't put out a really good movie in 35 years. Two things made Star Wars.

The opening scene with the star destroyer filling the screen as it pursued Leia's transport.

Han Solo.

Even at the time, the best thing about Logan's Run was the 5 minutes with Farrah Fawcett (Majors) in it, with Jenny Agutter making the rest of the movie bearable. Other than that, the story was beyond silly (even then) and made no sense, whatsoever. The laser surgery was cool but that was about it and that was overshadowed because it was Farrah's time onscreen, anyway.

195 Star Wars benefits from the fact its entire mythology and setting is not connected to Earth.

People love to create myths and here is a chance to create a whole galaxy of them. It blends the human desire for myths with the reality of other galaxies and technology and science.

It is different than other mythic creations. It blends magic (The Force) with science and technology. The ultimate geek combo.

But it would've been weird to have Han launch the Falcon into hyperspace, only to power out of it half-an-hour protagonist-time, but thirty Vader-years, later, during which time ol' Darth would've consolidated control of the galaxy, refurbished 3P0 into an Amidala clone, and committed unspeakable genocide on the forest moon of Endor.

Come to think of it, that's an interesting idea ... you can power up to near-light or FTL speed to escape your pursuer, but then you cede control of events and arrive at a point in the future where your enemy has been able to work his plans at will.

252 @240 yet another reason to make movies that make you feel good.

I saw where Tomorrowland was going and it seems like the suits went in and ruined it.

It started out with this theme, that the future used to be cool, and now we think of the future as bad.

And the cause of all the bad things happening are that the negative vibes are reinforcing.

I think I can see what the story Brad Bird was trying to tell and wish he had been able to tell it.

260 Anthony Rogers, WWI veteran, was a big hit in pulp novellas before the comic strip was conceived. We have a jaded view of it now because the late-30's low-budget serial movies were regular fare at art-house midnight underground movies in the 60's. The original appeal of SW was nothing more than camp.

Had the same budget and special effects been afforded to a quality re-boot of that story, it would have done just as well. There's quite a lot to it. People in 1977 were pretty damn hungry for heroes. Having been subjected to a series of zombie-like reanimations, all copied from something else, I doubt there's any future for it, at least for some time. I had high hopes for the Burroughs stories, but, alas.

Relativity applies when moving at or near the speed of light in normal space. The "convention" in science fiction is that if you jump into hyperspace, or use a space warp, or wormhole, you can cover vast distances in near-zero time, from either the travelers' or stay-behinds' frame of reference.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 28, 2015 11:36 PM (7MWCL)

264 Sorry to say, but you're wrong about no Sci Fi movies taking Relativity into account.

Fact is, it was the Star Wars franchise itself, that revealed that Darth Vader was Luke's father, and that Luke and Leah might as well have been Arkansas Hillbilly Kissin' Cousins there for a while.

Relativity, bah. That whole damn fambly tree ain't nuthin' but a Gordian knot.

It's not just that. It's the fact that the speed of light is finite. When the Enterprise is two light years away from some place they can't have normal conversations with them in "real time". Star Trek was based in a totally Newtonian universe with an infinite speed of light - which is funny seeing how their big thing was "warp speed". It was sci-fi thought up by people who, evidently, knew nothing about science ... or just didn't care.

That said, I liked the original Star Trek series even with these problems. There wasn't much else to pick from.

I, Robot could be done very well. But, it doesn't lend itself to the standard Hollywood format. To do I, Robot, you can't just pick one bit and present it out of context in a single movie. It would require something like a series, possibly movies, but better suited to TV, I suspect. Present each and every story as a self contained episode and do all of them (well, most. Some might be redundant). There aren't really any "central characters" in I', Robot.... just a couple of recurring ones.

Most came up with that explanation (which is pretty bogus, to begin with) long after the stories had already been written or filmed. It was just a cop-out. That's obvious because even in a universe where people are instantaneously jumping through wormholes there will still be many who are just bicycling at .9c and having all the relevant effects between them and the universe. But in these sci-fi stories where they claim the wormhole wild card, it's funny that no one in that universe seems to ever travel at .9c anywhere ... and, as I mentioned above, they still like to have instant communications from one end of the universe to the other ... because it's simple.

One of the best stories about Philip Dick was that Robert Heinlein kept bailing him out when he had money troubles.

"Several years ago, when I was ill, Heinlein offered his help, anything he could do, and we had never met; he would phone me to cheer me up and see how I was doing. He wanted to buy me an electric typewriter, God bless him one of the few true gentlemen in this world. I don't agree with any ideas he puts forth in his writing, but that is neither here nor there. One time when I owed the IRS a lot of money and couldn't raise it, Heinlein loaned the money to me. I think a great deal of him and his wife; I dedicated a book to them in appreciation. Robert Heinlein is a fine-looking man, very impressive and very military in stance; you can tell he has a military background, even to the haircut. He knows I'm a flipped-out freak and still he helped me and my wife when we were in trouble. That is the best in humanity, there; that is who and what I love."

338 @211 Stephen King and Philip K. Dick? Lotsa movies based on their works. Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury?
---------------------

Bradbury's had a few. 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' was originally one of his books before Disney turned it into a movie. I've heard there's quite a difference between the two, though. Farenheit 451 had a movie. And Bradbury's 'The Martian Chronicles' had a TV mini-series made out of it.

Asimov has had one short story (about a planet with multiple suns where nightfall rarely happens) turned into a movie, but apparently it did so poorly that I'd probably be hard-pressed to run it down. Clarke had 2001 and 2010, but I don't think any of his others were turned into movies. Heinlein had someone borrow the title of one of his novels, but I don't think anything else of his has been done.

As for the two that you mentioned as getting lots of movies made - King could vomit into a printing press, put a title on the result, and sell an absurd number of copies. He's so popular that it's little surprise so many of his books have been turned into movies. As for PKD, afaik the trend of turning his books into movies seems to be a recent thing that started well after he'd passed on. It's possible that we'll see the same with Bradbury a couple of decades after he dies.

339 Come to think of it, that's an interesting idea ... you can power up to near-light or FTL speed to escape your pursuer, but then you cede control of events and arrive at a point in the future where your enemy has been able to work his plans at will.
Posted by: wait, what's "ordinary" speed through time? at November 28, 2015 11:23 PM (ftJ4J)

That happens in the WH40k universe all the time - large-distance space travel is done by going through an alternate dimension called the Warp, where time is meaningless. Sometimes Warp travel isn't planned right and space fleets, for example, can arrive before the battle started or decades later.

Depends on whether there was a fab at the distant end that could turn the designs into finished product.

Or would building said fab be an iterative process, with each tech generation being built for the purpose of building the next generation, with a smaller lithography footprint at each step?

Exactly -- in 2013, they were saying that building a fab for that generation would cost about $12B. I don't suppose a colony wants to chase that high too hard while they're still investing in air supply. So do they keep money in terraforming, security, life support, and raw materials extraction with 20+-year-old tech, or do they plop down $12B for a fab that'll be obsolete before they run their first wafer?

Just about any practical colonial government would make do with what they had on hand.

Now, if they were saddled with progressives, the fab would be built over the objections of the populace on the basis that the newer tech would "save energy".

It would, of course, be a boondoggle and the fab would never actually have any chips run on it's line.

Meanwhile the money necessary for maintaining the colony would be wasted resulting in the deaths of nearly all colonists, save the progressive "leadership" who would have booked passage off world as soon as they had cash in hand.

Cash that was supposed to go to colony maintenance and building the fab facility, I might add.

410 @365 The first people to head out to a new star will be passed up by their grandchildren with a better drive.
-------------------

I had a story idea that worked with something along those lines. A sub-FTL colony sleeper ship goes dark in transit to its destination. While it's in transit, humanity develops an FTL drive, and gets attacked by a xenocidal race of aliens. Humanity doesn't know exactly where the ship is located, but knows where it will arrive, and that it will arrive well after humanity has been wiped out by the aliens. So the humans leave some basic infrastructure in place at the destination world, and warnings about the aliens (who then for religious reasons conveniently leave the area of space that humanity lived in) so that the colonists have a chance to rebuild humanity and win the war the next time around.

Well, I am not sure. It is an interesting question because as you get older and gain perspective your appreciation of bond movies changes. Everyone kind of has an affinity for the Bond they grow up with but as they age they outgrow their Bond or get a greater appreciation of the Bond franchise and the actors that portrayed him. I grew up in between Moore and Dalton, initialli I liked Moore more than Dalton. Never cared for Brosnan when he was Bond, but I like him more now.

If I can add some comment -- I don't remember my 30th birthday as being worthy of note.....but I do remember my 40th, because I said, "goddamit, I want a doctor who knows his ass from a hole in the ground" and changed a bunch of medical things. My new primary care doctor sent me in for a sleep study that diagnosed serious obstructive sleep apnea and the treatment totally changed my life for the better. My new LASIK meant that I could see 24/7 for the first time in my life. And my new regular medications gives me some hope that I won't randomly drop dead for a while.

The broader point is that a 30th birthday sounds more important than it is -- 'cause 30 is just a number. But any birthday (or other calendar day) where your daughter decides to make a difference can be very memorable, indeed.

OK, Goldeneye was not as good as any Connery Bond flick. (how many was that? subtract total-x)

Goldeneye was not as good as On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Telly Savalas! '60s hotties! Alps! Diana Rigg!) (total-x-1)

Goldeneye was not as good as Octopussy, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, or A View to Kill.

(total-x-1-4)

Goldeneye was arguably better than any of the Dalton movies, however partial to Carey Lowell I might be.

still (total-x-1-4)

Goldeneye cannot compare to Casino Royale or Skyfall

425 Re FTL: Unpossible. Consider these three things:

1: Causality

2: Relativity

3: Faster than Light travel or even communication

Pick any two. You can't have all three together. 1) and 2) are pretty firmly established. 2) is about the nature of this thing we can spacetime, and if it's wrong, the nature has gone to a lot of trouble to fool us. It would be maliciously deceptive. And without 1), well, reality itself is a contradiction.

Now, General Relativity has some tricks, (but there never is any FTL, that is something moving faster than a null path -- it's just that null paths can be very strange compared to flat spacetime), but causality is always the killer.

Moore was a good Bond, though no Connery, but a lot of his movies were crap through no fault of his own. psychics, voodoo, trains, jaws, and running across alligator heads are not really the stuff of Bond. Moonraker and Octopussy were plain old stupid.

Casino Royale and Skyfall are not inkeeping with Bond, not enough violence and Bond is wussified. Skyfall is too bleak for a Bond movie.

432 427: Those are some of the GR tricks I was talking about. See the Aculbierre "warp drive" as a famous example. The trouble with these things is they require stuff dubbe "exotic matter", involving negative mass and energy, and usually lots of it. And they all involve some problems with quantum field theory. General Relativity and Quatum theory have never been unified, and it looks like they won't any time soon, unfortunately. GR just doesn't want to quantitize.

That is if you try to apply quantum theory, asking, okay what happens to any real matter and energy that tries to go through these exotic "warp field" spacetimes, what happens? And the answers are problematic. You get things like energy densities blowing up and other problems.

There are no current theories (AFAIK) to allow FTL in observable dimensions. OTOH, there are several theories in Physics that postulate other dimensions. Accordingly, any plausible FTL transport would involve isolating a pocket XYZ+T, moving it along dimension Q, and re-melding it.

439 And many of these exotic spacetimes are found to involve closed time like curves, which cause causality violations. They argue about this stuff a lot -- I think I read someone claiming they would form in the Alcubierre spacetime, but I'm not sure.

And another one, involving an Alcubierre like "warp" spacetime, was the vexing problem of a signal from inside the "bubble" taking an infinite amount of time to get to the region where the exotic matter was generating the field. That is, you couldn't ever stop it once you managed to get it started.

At any rate, all of this stuff is so far beyond anything we're capable of doing now, it's like cavemen talking about going to the Moon. We'd have to be at the "Type II" civilization level (energy output on the order of a star) to even think about it.

At it's not just outputing that much power. It's *controlling it*. Your "engine" is going to have power level output equal to the Sun. If not a few orders of magnitude greater.

460 I rate Goldeneye pretty damn high. Top 5 at least... maybe top 3. As a Bond fan from the 60's and picky about the movies, I want to say that it sucks and is no match for the classics. But, I can't. It would be a lie. It rocked. It was a great blend of everything I wanted from a Bond flick. They haven't come close to matching it since then.

Posted by: yankeefifth at November 29, 2015 02:00 AM (vb33c)

Bond movies have had SEVERAL formulas they were supposed to follow, and for a while the PC changes were seriously impacting them.

Bond is a badass. He kills people to earn his keep; he tortures people when it will give him a momentary advantage; he lies, cheats, seduces, and terrorizes according to a strict "fuck the wogs" moral code. That's not to say he's racist -- his grief at the death of Quarrel in Dr. No is sincere -- but there are those on his team........and others.

You could contrast this with the current MSM story that "refugees" who aren't refugees, "from Syria" who are from somewhere else, "women and children" who are military-aged, "need resettlement" when they need arms to resist at home.....

I don't put deception past Nature. She can be a real, nasty, emotional bitch at times. I think that Quantum theory is proof of that (giving quantum the benefit of the doubt). But I doubt that a bunch of mid-level yahoos at CERN would be the ones finding it out.

I'm surprised none of them killed themselves. That was one of the most embarrassing, silly, ridiculous scientific claims publicly made ... ever. I don't know that I could show my face in public after having done something so stupid as that. 472 Here's a refreshing change of pace -- a female star who, when egged on by a reporter to whine about how men get paid more than women, instead confesses that she actually gets a better deal and gets paid MORE than men of her level would!:

http://en.chessbase.com/post/an-interview-with-dronavalli-harika-1-2

The background:

Top-level chess, like top-level tennis or golf, is usually segregated into a men's circuit and a women's circuit because (everyone knows but it's not cool to admit it publicly) 95% of the time the top women cannot compete on the top men's level.

The top male chess players are rated around 2800. But the top women chess players are rated about 2600 -- which in chess is a huge difference. There are literally thousands of run-of-the-mill random male chess grandmasters who are rated around 2600 and could easily beat literally every female contestant in the Women's World Championship.

BUT...a woman grandmaster rated, say, 2500, playing in an elite women's tournament, would get a nice juicy "appearance fee" and compete for much bigger prizes than would a male grandmaster rated 2500. In fact, a male rated 2500 would almost NEVER be offered ANY appearance fee, because he's just not in the elite class (for men). And he'd have to compete in smaller tournaments with lesser prizes than are offered to females of the exact same rating.

Anyway, The Narrative must be promoted despite these facts, so a German reporter interviewing a female Indian chess grandmaster asked this question and got this response:

"Reporter: Let’s talk about appearance fees. Grandmasters usually get appearance fees and have their expenses paid. But do male players and female players get different appearance fees? Do you think appearance fees for women are not high enough?

Harika: Maybe I am not the right person to ask. My priority is mainly to be able to play in a strong tournament with good playing conditions. I am happy and content because I am able to do that. To be honest, in many tournaments I get much better conditions than a male player with a rating that is similar to mine or even much better because I am a female player."

Whoa! I'm stunned. She admitted the truth. An female professional in the US would have taken the opportunity to whine about sexism and old-boy's-club and glass ceilings and unequal treatment.

475 468: "Deceptive" is the only word I could think of to try to mean what I'm thinking, but it doesn't quite do it. The rule has been one of limits.

Take Newton. Newton is wrong, but Newton is just the low energy, weak field limit of what replace it, GR and Quantum Theory. Presumably, those aren't the final words either, and they will be the limit of a new theory.

By deceptive, I mean a violation of that weak field limit rule. Something happens that actually contradicts the weak field limit.

I don't know enough of his work. I'm referring to Zelazny's "Lord of Light" -- I really think it could be cinematic as hell if someone unwraps it correctly. Jackson's LOTR made something previously thought unfilmable into a masterwork -- he could unwrap the onion onto the screen for "Lord of Light" -- although (as demonstrated by The Hobbit) he could also make it a pageant of spectacle, uncoupled from the plot.

525 With all respect: consider that Islam has been around more than a thousand years, on the border of Europe the whole time. It didn't just start, there are hundreds of years of precedent there, and all sorts of barbarian invasions from all sorts, constantly if you include the gypsies and others from the east. They actually have a great deal more experience dealing with all this generation after generation than folks on the other side of the world seem to realise. Meanwhile it looks from outside than you're never going to solve your black and mexican problems, and you just keep moving from state to state to put off dealing with them. Europeans on the other hand, tend to stay in the place of their ancestors. It's a whole different mindset, some quick fix is not the answer. There may be a lot of mutual incomprehension, aided by language and translation problems (it's great that Ace knows French, but he still find its hard to figure out some reports as to what is actually happening for example).
