Possibilites: could be a domestic dispute, remember the ex-husband or boyfriend who shot up his ex's workplace at a hair salon a few years ago? Could be completely random, as in the gunman went in to the first available open door. Could be a Muslim, they allegedly hate abortion. Could be a reichstag fire situation -- wouldn't put anything past this potus and he did say last week that was going to pass gun-control. Abortion clinic shootings are pretty much non-existant, I mean in all the four plus decades of pro-lifers protesting there's hardly any reports of violence. So I'm really not going to believe it's a pro-lifer until there is hard and fast evidence.

I've always assumed that letter carriers are given their route, but it's up to them how they work it. One might start at one end and work his way to the other, and a substitute might decide to do it the other way round. I don't know if that's true, but it makes sense to me.

All of them are Old Hollywood "historical" epics,
which means they're all pretty slow by today's standards.
I have to say, I like all of them. But I have to be in the right mood.
55 Days is probably my fave. Though I have a soft spot for both El Cid and Khartoum.
Weirdly, Khartoum seems to be censured these days with the final brief shot of "Chinese" Gordon's severed head no longer shown.

"Specter" was a lot of fun. I think on reflection, that I liked it better than "Skyfall".
New "Hunger Games" movie ended the series well and redeemed the series for me after the last movie which stunk on ice.

I don't really watch many police shows BUT one of my favorite's a few years ago was "Detroit (some number - code for murder").
It wasn't a great show at all but what I LOVED about it is that in a predominately black city, more than half the crimes were committed by white people. My favorite was the Jewish gang member evening up scores from decades ago.

Somewhere online, depending on your area, there are reviews. Maybe there's a state or local gun forum, or just Yelp, Trip Advisor or something like that.
The forum reviews will have more detail.
Then you can check and see if they have a web page to see what their rates and hours are, if they rent guns and sell ammo, have training classes.
Sometimes a cheap training class can be the best way to check *all* of it out. They will often have reviews online in the same places.

If you can find one close that offers instructors and classes, pick that one first.
I was taught at an early age by my father, who was taught by the military. And then I did three years in the army. I would still take a hunting clase, because of the changes in the law over my lifetime, and the same with a concealed carry class on the law of self defense.
If the nearest range is a shooting club, ask if there are members who will offer you (free) instruction in the safe handling of firearms.

Here's some starters:
Safety first and foremost. If they seem loosey goosey, chances are that's exactly what you'll find.
You have to show ID at the door. They ask you about your experience.
NO ONE goes into the shooting lanes without eyes and ears, or with a weapon that is not inspected first.
Nuggets don't shoot without a RSO by their side. A RSO is present when the range is hot.
Safety and shooting rules are strictly enforced. No excuses and no exceptions.
The range is well lit and well ventilated, and is not crowded. Only shooters are in the range; observers are outside.
Staff is courteous and friendly and does not look down on you for asking questions and wanting to familiarize yourself with a weapon. They'll give you a chance to hold a weapon, demonstrate how it is made a complete safe weapon, and how to load and unload it, how to clear a misfeed or a jam. And the RSO will do it for you on the range when it happens if you ask him to.
You can tell a lot by what you see when you walk in. If you see people slinging pistols around and sighting them with no awareness of what the weapon crosses or is directed at, your best bet is to leave.

I was downrange picking up targets at the public range outside of Las Cruces, NM when some dumbass in another lane decide to start popping his targets.
2 bits of luck that day.
1. We were several lanes apart.
2. His buddy started yelling at him stop firing.
I just started going out into the desert and shooting in the arroyos after that, it was just safer.

The shooter got inside the PP building. If he was after PP itself (staff, etc.), seems like more would be dead and he probably wouldn't have killed a cop who had nothing to do with PP directly.
Also, there was an early report that he was shooting randomly in a nearby parking lot prior to going to PP. One of many, no link sorry.

I wasn't there, but the range security officer and a few regulars told me this story recently -- girl shoots a 1911 at a target at 7 yards. Apparently she did well, turns around to face her boyfriend, smiling and celebrating, and BOOM -- new hole in the drop ceiling and a "clunk" off the roof.
Luckily the muzzle was pointing up and not at her boyfriend, but that incident made everyone shudder pretty hard.

Except for your opening remarks, that's about where I am. I can't afford an exclusive club, and that is still no guarantee they will be competent, and the problem with public ranges is they are public. With good administration maybe, but I don't want some self appointed expert with a 'hot weapon' enforcing his idea of range safety either.

Yeah. Where I live the ranges are either private clubs (with membership dues -- $150-$200 / yr for a family or so. Run like clubs.) or "public" ranges where any jackass can walk in off the street, sign a piece of paper, rent a gun and start shooting.

Here, anything over 100 yds is going to cost you thousands a year for club dues. And that's only if they let you know the secret handshake to join.
There are several National Forest service ranges, free, that are 100 yds. Got to keep a careful eye on everyone else while you're there though and never go alone.
The other option is knowing someone that has a lot of property outside any city limits.

Avoid ranges/stores that include variants following words:
If you get a chance, closely examine the partitions between shooting lanes. The partitions are usually wood, MDF or some such material. 1/4" steel, or 4" concrete would be nice, but I think I've never seen such a place.
Is there any evidence of bullet damage to the partitions? How old (or new) is the damage? How many partitions show this sort of wear? These are clues.
In any event, trying to get a position as far to the right as possible. If a gun is pointed down-range, and is mistakenly fired ... on an outdoor range after Cease Fire, this should never happen, otherwise perhaps no one will notice. But most shooters are right-handed, and are more likely to point to the left when loading, preparing to start firing or ceasing fire, and if there's a mistake during one of these times ...
Keep the muzzle pointed at the target, or verify that the gun is unloaded and cannot fire (cleaning rod blocking the chamber, etc.) ... don't be the fool who mistakenly points left and fires.

While hiking, I like to just do a draw-and-fire as I come up on them. The plate target is my favorite for this; a hit gives a loud ringing sound for immediate feedback.

Oscar Meyer pre-cooked microwave bacon. It's not the best, but unless you set the microwave to an hour instead of a minute there's hardly anything for you to screw up.
I think you're the kind of person who can't walk away from something you're cooking because you lose track of time.

I spent a lot of time alone so I had to learn to cook.
I did know someone when I was younger who was so bad they set water on fire trying to boil it. We all decided he should subsist on fast food, it would be safer.
