Early Birder Thread [krakatoa]

Time to smoke the turkey.

I wish I were more thankful today. Persevering through a flu bug that has completely detailed my original plans.

Nevertheless, despite the ick, I have much to be thankful for.

My loving wife who holds together the homestead far more than she should have to due to my work travel.

My amazing daughter who with a hug of her tiny arms can make me forget for precious moments the burdens of the job and of a society hellbent on finding new depths of inanity to call civilized.

My job, despite it's travel requirements. It is a job after all, and not a hobby. At the end of the day, providing for one's family is the ultimate measure of the designated breadwinner.

I know I have it better than most, and despite my general ambivalence of religion, I can't possibly claim to have made it purely on my own merits. Providence, luck, karma, whatever you want to call it, I am thankful for it.

54 Just a thought:

Does anybody know of another entire nation which pauses a day just to give thanks?

The Founders spoke long and eloquently of Divine Providence being our guiding hand. Does anybody know of another nation founded likewise?

I don't think so. And, though we always seem inclined to piss it away, it is hard to believe that God is not interested in the welfare of this land.

For that, be thankful, and I hope He blesses all of you morons, most of all the ones I've pissed off, and grants you strength through the current trials. When dawn comes, we will survey the wreckage and do what Americans have always done: get back to work.

55 Realizing that the universe is not an accident, nor a random event of nothingness, is the first step.

Once you accept that there is a higher power, you must logically ask the obvious:

"What does this power want of me, or want me to do? Am I really just entertainment?"

If you are listening, you will find out that the answer is "No, you are not just entertainment. You have a purpose, however small it is in the greater scheme of things... it's huge by some measures, such as that of your family."

I am a Christian. This is neither an accident nor a mistake.

I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, in the spirit of our early presidents who recognized and openly declared that we were thanking God and not "our lucky stars..."

God Shed His Grace On Us. Good words.

If Obama is the highest power in the world, there is no need to be thankful. That means gratitude to someone who benefits you from goodwill. You have no obligation to be thankful to an idiot thug like Obama, who has harmed you or put you at risk, and hasn't done greater harm only because he hasn't taken notice of you yet. And to punt to karma or providence is like superstition. Speculating that some positive force exists for which there is no direct evidence.

I've owned every manner of grill ever invented. L'll smokey...full sized Weber, smokers, LP, Hibatchi...you name it. The Big Green Egg is, by far, the most superior grill ever devised and put into production. From its convection FX to its even heating and minimal use of charcoal, it beats almost all other forms of cooking equipment. I use mine several times a week, even in cold weather. It's ine of the reasons I was asked to cook the Thanksgiving turkey. The food I share from the BGE has developed a reputation far and wide! I can grill a couple of charbroiled burgers for lunch, then make a couple of adjustments, and start a "low and slow" Boston butt or rack of ribs, to be ready for supper! The DigiQ (TM) BBQ Guru, is a computer controlled fan that inserts into the bottom vent and regulates the temp. It keeps the "pit" at an absolute set temp, with only a degree or two of variation during the cooking process. For the serious BBQ user, I can't recommend this grill highly enough.

There are several sizes available, I bought a medium size. Also, I bought mine "slightly used" on Craig's list, then cut a hole in a relatively small stainless steel table that "nests" the BGE and gives me a nice work surface.

This double standard is one of my pet peeves. It's ok to use derogatory adjectives, for an alabaster complexion, like pasty or pallid (few though they may be).

But it's not okay to use the rather more obvious derogatory adjectives for non-alabaster complexions. I believe Andrew Dice Clay was the last comedian able to get away with that.

Also Wednesday, a Cook County judge dismissed a charge against a protester accused of hitting a police officer in the hours after the video was made public.
Judge Peggy Chiampas said the state's attorney's office recommended dropping the charge against 22-year-old Malcolm London and told London he was free to go.

The media and the left really want another Ferguson or Baltimore to happen in Chicago. The judge needs to be removed immediately along with that worthless bitch Anita Alverez

93 I am thankful for the wisdom of our founding fathers, who fought for and brought about our republic, and our constitution. And even though the slide to unravel that constitution, and civilization itself continues, I'm thankful that we are still in pretty good shape, for now. I'm thankful for this little piece of the internet here, Ace being the consummate wordsmith. And all of you, for it is rare that I don't peruse the comments and don't wind up learning something. So I'm thankful for you, who are reading this. May God bless you all, and keep you well as we fight to reclaim our country from those who wish to destroy it. Truth will prevail. It always does. Now back to lurking.

117 For Carol at #32 above. I have one of the first iPads. Actually it was my mothers, and she started having the same problem you described. She took it to the "idiot bar" and they said the battery was toast and nothing could be done. She got a new one and since I had given the original to her as a Mothers Day gift, I asked if I could have it. I laid it on top of my microwave and kind of forgot about it. Then one day I picked it up and it worked. It made me wonder if the microwaves had rejuvenated the battery. I'm no scientist, but by golly, every time I get that red battery image and stick the iPad on top of the microwave and run it for a couple of minutes, the iPad works again.

Nope.

IIRC, Boston -- and the rest of us in the region -- were completely blindsided by all that white stuff.

If I were going to make a prediction, I'd say this year will be short on snow, since Maaaaaahty Walsh spent a ton of taxpayer loot on new plows.

Hmm! Tell me more!

Posted by: Caitlyn J. at November 26, 2015 09:12 AM (oVJmc)

155 @134 There's a WPA mural of Big Bone Lick. They just covered it up.

Almost too late to "hep" anyone, and generally Morons are pretty canny chefs SWIDT, but, to wit: Stopped at a seafood shoppe yesterday, found the counter man shucking fresh (you know, "fresh" for NW Ohio)oysters, and remembered how much my dad likes oyster stew, from his yoot when eye-sters was cheap eats. Resolved to make an oyster dressing for the "cajun smoked" turkey.

So, bought some, look nice and decent price, came home and found a oysters and cornbread re-ceet. Bookmarked it. Just before going out Drinking last night (I am a patriotic American dammit), got sudden inspiration to read the whole thing, not just the ingredient list as one is wont to do.

It calls for the cornbread to be made well in advance, and dried in oven overnight. Of course I had planned to bake the cornbread at breakfast for obvious reasons, and it would then have been "Moister than the Oyster." So, 45 minutes well spent last evening, and I managed to catch up on the whiskey.

READ YOUR RECIPES NOW. Many if not most side-dishes call for something to be simmered, sauteed, or in this case staled in advance. Don't be that guy. Now get out in that summer-kitchen and start flaying.

Broken hearted.

Empty carted.

183 Masma AJ, so sorry about the girl, hope the day is otherwise worry free after the dinner prep is finished, and hopefully if it is flu it is 24 hour and she is riding the end of the germ.

Many are culled, but few are chosen.

Hmmm. I think Vladimir Putin said the same thing recently.

190 Thanks, Willow.

Don't know what's up for sure with her. All our allergies are bad, despite the pollen count being very low.

Supposedly low...tons of rain and warm weather has made plants go nuts, so I'm not sure I believe the Official Pollen Count.

Hmm, on the Weather Channel's pollen page for our town, it says the historical pollen info is from Dallas. Wonder if the current info also is from not-exactly-here.

196 Hi Mama AJ.

197 Good morning Carol and happy Thanksgiving!

Posted by: Mama AJ at November 26, 2015 09:48 AM (nXeSu)

198 Mama AJ,
I have year round allergies, inside & outside.
Dr. Gave me script for something & told me it's helped others & if it doesn't help, to call for stronger inhaler.
It is Ipratropium Bromide .06%.

Your girl should ask dr for that, if she hasn't already.

Happy Thanksgiving.

201 I trust the whitetail doe forecast. If the does all have twin fawns then the following winter will be harsh. God only knows how they know that far in advance, but it helps the herd survive.
