"That Doesn't Sound Like Me:" Chris Christie Surprised by Question About His Entering Politics To Block Efforts to Repeal "Assault Weapons" Ban; Claims to Not Remember It Happening Either Way

The Star Ledger (of NJ) said that he had told them this, and reported it long ago.

Christie says "That doesn't sound like me" and claims a failure of memory.

Obviously, Bret Baier did not promise him a "no surprises" interview.

A look of panic spread across Christie’s face. "Yeah, I don't remember saying that. So, you know, we’ll see," he said.

Just then, a quote appeared on the screen—one Christie gave to the Star-Ledger in April 1993--that would seem to contradict his answer.

"The issue which has motivated me to get into this race is the recent attempt by certain Republican legislators to repeal New Jersey’s ban on assault weapons," Christie said at the time.

The full quote, not shown by Fox News, goes even further: "In today's society, no one needs a semiautomatic assault weapon," he said. "We already have too many firearms in our communities."

Christie, who has been enjoying renewed interest in his candidacy after months of low poll numbers, looked dumbfounded by Baier's question.

"Listen, I--that's 22 years ago,” Christie said. "Bret, I don’t remember. I could've! It doesn’t sound like me."

1 Christie's always been very gun-grabby. See his stand on cop-killing hollow point ammunition.

It certainly does sound like him.

It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln
proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent
Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on the last
Thursday in November

83 There are answers which Christie could have given that would have been grudgingly acceptable. For instance:

"There was a serious violent crime boom going on in the early Nineties and a bunch of public policy options were on the table. It was suggested that an assault weapons ban might help. The idea had strong bipartisan support in my community. The ban was enacted on a temporary trial basis. It didn't have any noticeable effect on crime. The ban sunsetted. I wouldn't support reviving it today for the simple reason that it didn't work. And its failure to work has made me a lot more skeptical about quick-fix measures for crime that involve gun control. I wouldn't support a similar measure today."

1993 was, after all, a long damn time ago in political terms. In all terms. A lot has happened since then. Voters recognize that circumstances alter cases.

Instead he gives this stammering back footed oh-crap-I'm-busted response. Geez, most fat kids learn to come up with much better much smoother impromptu excuses early on. Cookie jars and whatnot.

109 also, from WZ: apparently Josh Earnest:

"As people are sitting around the Thanksgiving table talking about these issues, as they should and I am sure they will all across the country, that's an issue that should be raised and asked by the members around the table. If we're going to have a serious discussion about national security, let's talk about some pretty obvious things that Congress could do. One obvious thing that Congress can do is pass a law that prevents someone who is on the terror watch list from being able to buy a weapon. There's no reason - I'm not sure why that's even controversial. I'm not sure why it hasn't been done so far. I suspect, however, that has a lot to do with the fear the Republicans have of the NRA."

[maybe it's because almost anyone can be put on the terror watch list? Is there anything resembling "due process of law" required to put someone on that list? Even the ACLU seems to have a problem with that.]

123 There are answers which Christie could have given that would have been grudgingly acceptable.

Cookie jars and whatnot.

weft, wow. From your linked item:

"The plan under consideration would also delay the medical device tax
in exchange for additional funding for ACA risk corridors, which is a program
that allows federal payments to insurers to offset high losses in the initial
years of the ACA."

Savor this, folks. The GOP will "trade" a disastrous bail-out of the catastrophically destructive O-care program "for" a delay in the medical device tax. Two - two - expansions of the deficit via revenue reduction and a new subsidy. Yes, new. The "risk corridor" $$ were supposed to be transfers from one private entity to another, not federal $$.

Oh, and the article mentions delay of the "Cadillac" tax on health plans - which I think mostly gores the union oxen - for two years.

So instead of standing firm and making O-care collapse of its own idiocy, right out of the box, the GOP is looking at saving it, further softening and delaying certain parts of it that are noisome to the Dem base, and ramming a new spigot into the tax reservoir to pour out to help the insurance companies who meekly or rent-seeking-ly went along with O-care.

Meanwhile, millions of responsible self-reliant healthy people can for the first time in their lives not affort health insurance (private plan destruction).

Just savor that.

She told me they started the Christmas music at Halloween time and it is driving all of the mall workers crazy. Of course she has to work black Friday from 6am to 12am. I suggested to her that maybe this is a good incentive to get her real estate license that she's been talking about for the last 6 months.

wondering if I would notice a big decrease in the cost now that the US
and Canadian dollars aren't around 1:1 ?

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at November 25, 2015 04:08 PM (AkOaV)

Yeah, according to the Royal Bank website, $1 American will get you $1.28 Canadian. So for every $100 US, you get $128 Canadian. And I think you can get the federal sales tax back too if you look into it.

I haven't seen much of the country, but when I eventually have a wife and kids, I would want to take them to the Winter Carnival - I think it's in Quebec City. They took us in grade 8, it was really beautiful there, tons of ice sculptures, a nice experience.

Or there could be some "islamist" senior officers who are "islamist" for public consumption, but really Kemalist at heart, because that puts them in the driver's seat. Just seems to me that Putin would be wise to try make it happen. That could also pry Turkey out of NATO and estrange it from the EU, which would very much benefit Russia.

The EU bears most of the responsibility for letting Turkey devolve into what it has become. It was the EU that demanded in 2003 that Turkey amend its constitution to take supreme power away from the military (the only thing that had kept Turkey even halfway sane since Ataturk put it together) in order to even be considered for EU membership (which the EU, correctly, was never going to entertain, anyway). Turkey complied and that was the beginning of the end of secular rule in Turkey. And the EU turds got a kick out of the whole thing.

351 Buying gas.

First off, your American debit card most likely won't work at the pump. So you need to pre-pay inside.

And then they ask you the dreaded question "so how many liters do you need?"

And you say "what the fuck is a liter? Fill 'er up with regular."

And they say "no, you need to pre-pay."

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at November 25, 2015 04:17 PM (AkOaV)

FWIW, the converse is also true. In my experience, debit card usage in the USA lags far behind that in Canada, and can be glitchy, even if one has an account at a U.S. bank, which I do.

352 My car crapped out on the highway going from Alaska to Seattle once, so I grabbed a Canadian ferry going south. As soon as I got on deck, and was leaning on the rail, a dude came up next to me and said: "Sooooo, where ya from, eh?"

I barely concealed the inner guffaws.

Western Canadians can almost speak English, almost. Kinda like folks from Sheboygan.

353 The gas pumps don't shut off automagically when the tank is full up in ole Canada?

Must be you drive around Saskatchew-on
Posted by: Bigby's Butterfingers at November 25, 2015 04:30 PM (3ZtZW)

Ha, no you can't pre-pay at most gas pumps with a US card.

In other words, they can't pre-authroize your card at the pump. They can only run it for a certain amount inside.

So if you have cash, the situation is not that bad. But if all you have is a debit card, you kind of have to have an idea of how much money to have them run it for. And all you see is something like "$1.57 / liter" on the sign, and have no idea how much to run the card for.

Unless youre a nerd and can do the conversion in your head.

And now that I think about it, my card IS with a Canadian bank. I have TD Bank.

But it's still issued in the US. I think that's the issue. Because the pump wants to put a $50 hold on the card before I pump, and theres a security thing about international money holds. That's my guess at least

372 In today's paper, I read this letter to the editor. At first I thought it was first class snark, then I realized the writer was serious:

"While President Obama is pardoning two turkeys for Thanksgiving, every one of us can exercise that same presidential power by choosing a nonviolent Thanksgiving observance that spares a turkey’s life.

And here are some good reasons:

•You can brag about pardoning a turkey - like Obama.

•You truly are what you eat. Who wants to be a “butterball”?

•Fruits and vegetables don’t have to carry government warning labels.

•You won’t sweat the environment and food resources devastation guilt trip.

• You won’t spend a sleepless night wondering how the turkey lived and died.

•Your body will appreciate a holiday from saturated fat, cholesterol, and hormones.

•You won’t have to call a poultry hotline to keep your family out of the emergency room.

Seriously, this Thanksgiving, let’s give thanks for our good fortune, health and happiness with a life-affirming, cruelty-free feast of vegetables, fruits and grains."

He asked why the entire media complex and Dems as well as GOP establishment hate and seem to fear Trump so badly.

I can kind of understand the GOPe's problem. He's not under their control and they fear he makes them look stupid, that he'll ruin everything. They think he can win with stupid knuckle-dragging Republican voters, but will lose the general election.

But that doesn't answer why the Democrats are so freaked out. You'd think they would love Trump, even if he was a double secret Clinton machine plant.

425 I'm beginning to respect the mental processes we usually call "prejudice."
Because I'm an asshole NRA lifer, plus some other cards I carry, I knew damn well that Christie was a gun-grabber before any of this campaigning stuff even started. Now, with a cypher like Trump or Carson, if somebody drudges up an offhand comment from some time ago, I might just give them the old benefit of the doubt. Still maturing politically, not in their wheelhouse, live and learn, that line of comment.

Since I already had a prejudice against Big Chris, everything else he said and did was filtered through my One Big Issue. And, it was all wrong. So I never developed any liking for him in the first place. So now I don't have to agonize through an adjustment.

Young Ayn Rand actually campaigned for Wendell Willkie, for a while. When she got to meet him, he was told what she'd written (this was pre-Big Novel), and he grumbled and gruffed around for a minute before coming up with "Individualism? I'm...for it!" She was, as we used to say, obnoxed. Willkie later went on to coin the phrase "One World." And Rand had an epistemological epiphany.

427 >>Wrong. Lots of lefty sites will tell you he does, but it's not accurate to say "Trump wants to ban assault weapons." <<<

>>>Wrong. He most certainly did say it. In fact he wrote it in one of
his books, The America We Deserve. And he wrote that book in 2000 so not
even as old a quote as Christie's.<<<

A link would nullify the dispute.

428 Who has gastric surgery and stays that fat? Even if he wasn't an Obama hugging, RINO, fatass liar, I'm afraid all the good food would end up at the White House and we'd be left with Michelle meals....

429 "Yahoo Canada, "ISIS Poster Girl beaten to death for trying to leave..."

That Sabin had psycho eyes. The one beaten to death learned the hard way that all the terrible things said about ISIS were true.

430 If Chris Christie recanted what he said, would the Trumpkins also forgive and forget? Of course not.

It would be "HIS TRUE COLORS HAVE BEEN SHOWN!!"

And for once, they would be right.

I know, isn't it?

Still, every candidate in the race would love to be Trump right now.

433 Sounds exactly like the Obama loving fat bastard. I just can't get their romantic stroll down the beach out of my mind either.

I might have been swayed if he had pardoned Brian Aitken, but the duplicitous bastard only signed an executive clemency not a full pardon.

434 >>Have you met a Trump voter in real life? They're not exactly well versed on policy, it's more "Trump is really angry, he's awesome!!!!!"" Like it's a WWF character.

I truly do not get it. It's as if anything he said prior to announcing he was going to build a yuuuuge wall don't matter.

436 Trump gets a pass for his past comments because he wasn't running for office and trying to acquire voter approval.

Some might say he was trying for politician approval.

If you had a project worth millions and knew you had to suck up to politicians, would you lie to do it when there's no political cost to you? I mean you're lying to politicians for goodness sakes.

It really isn't in dispute. It's in his damn book. And he has many heresies like this including gushing support for single payer healthcare.

But here's a link.

This is the sort of stupid Trumpkin logic that I always get a laugh from.

Clearly, his whole life he's been lying until just a few months ago when he wanted to be President.

That's just an opinion. It is equally likely he is lying his ass off right now to get votes. He wasn't trying to influence any pols in his books, those were just his mind thoughts at the time.

441 Why am I only now learning about bacon flavored Ritz crackers?

Posted by: Weasel at November 25, 2015 05:21 PM (e3bId)

442 I just brought up why I thought he would get away with that where Cripie couldn't.

Trump lost me recently when he signed on to the denial of a citizens 2A rights by being placed on an bureaucratic Terror List.

So he's finally crossed the line for me.

I'm officially a free range voter now.

443 Posted by: Weasel at November 25, 2015 05:21 PM (e3bId)

Very mild flavor. Just about anything you spread on the cracker will over power the bacon taste.

I give it 2 strips up.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at November 25, 2015 05:23 PM (Xo1Rt)

444 If anything, I put a lot more stock into somebody's stated positions when they aren't running for office. They have much less motivation to lie or tell people what they want to hear.

The same with Trump after the 2012 election, he blamed it on Romney's "harsh rhetoric" on illegal aliens with self-deportation. yet now, Trump is Mr. Border.

The rubes are too stupid to know they are being played

449 I bought a copy of Trump's book "The America We Deserve". Before I got to the anti-gun comments in the middle of the book, I was more confused by the back cover calling for a return of the American Dream: "unencumbered by bureaucratic ineptitude, govt. regulation, confiscatory taxes, racism, discrimination against women, and people based on sexual orientation."

I was unaware that the government of the year 2000 discriminated against women and gays.

450 Wow! Tough crowd. So, do you not like him because of his weight? Certainly mentioned a lot. How many of you remember everything you said 22 yrs ago, or 22 days ago? And if you would vote for HRC over Christie, then you are the a DEM in ill fitting disguise.
Now, I don't like him so much. But you people don't give an inch, and that would put HRC in WH, again.
