Chicago Releases Video of Police Shooting of Suspect; City Braces for Violence That Some Predict Could Be Described as "Tuesday"

The cop's being tried for murder.

Having watched the tape, what I see here is cause for arrest of Laquan McDonald. I don't see anything remotely threatening enough to justify a shooting.

Apparently prosecuting someone for murder isn't enough. There must be riots.

I guess I see the point of protests, but not riots. I assume we'll have riots, because of course we must have riots.

At the Blaze, more graphic video, which includes the actual shooting. And he was shot at sixteen times, but I can't see how he was shot sixteen times. Looks like the first one two shots kills him. If he actually was shot sixteen times, then I guess he was being hit by bullets long before he falls to the ground.

Update: ArthurK. says you can see the bullets hitting him when he's on the ground.

Well, this won't be a long trial.

Seems to Have Been Some Testi-Lying About the Shooting.

Of course there was no "lunge."

It Gets Worse: Apparently Burger King had security cameras nearby.

So...

The prosecutor says that there is no evidence of anyone "tampering with" the video files.

Alvarez, in response to a question from NBC 5 Political Editor Carol Marin, said forensic testing was done on surveillance footage from a Burger King restaurant close to where the shooting took place to determine if the video had been "tampered with."

"Forensic testing was done on the Burger King surveillance system to determine if anyone tampered with the evidence and the testing did not reveal any such evidence," she said.

She declined to comment on which agency conducted the tests, however.

I don't know who's right here, obviously.

@JimmyPrinceton has asked on Twitter why the media isn't going after Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, who, after all, presides over this police department, and and the prosecutors, and etc.

10 I posted this morning that our son sat on his balcony and witnessed a 4+ hour melee between the Savannah police and a pimp, his whores, and a bunch of gangbangers in the wee hours Sunday morning.

No shots fired, but the police put up with plenty of shit.

Son said he sat on his balcony, "just in case the police needed me to smoke-check some asshole."

No thanks, son.

Our local paper had not a single mention of the mayhem. Not one.

Furthermore, the only people we still know there are all flaming leftists, so they should be perfectly safe, being on the side of the oppressed and all.

42 I can't square the sixteen shots with what's on the video, but there's no (or not enough) sound and apparently the autopsy shows 16 shots, including some in the back.

What a ginger midget told me is that several cop cars had been following this guy for a mile or so because they didn't have any tasers and were waiting for someone to show up with tasers.

Then shooty guy shows up and immediately goes shooty. CNN says 6 seconds after he gets out of his car.

So, apparently, most of the Chicago PD was doing a reliable job. One Berserker shows up and murders the kid. Berserker gets charged with murder.

Video was made available due to a FOIA request. Ginger midget tells me that Rahm had the reporter who filed the request excluded from his press conference. Chicago, baby.

Yeah, looks like the cop capped the little snot that dissed him and slashed his tire. He should be prosecuted for second degree murder, at the very least. The scandal here is that this happened last year during election season. Not sure if this is true, but heard on the radio this morning that the cops tried to cover it up or impede the investigation, erased some tape from a restaurant cam across the street. If the cop saw a threat, he did the right thing. And that's the long and short of it, whether you like it or not.

118 This is about as good an officer justified shooting as you're ever going to see. If a cop can't shoot a suspect raising a gun at him then there is not a cop alive that will work the streets. If you don't see him bring his right hand up with the gun - up and across his belly - the moment they shoot him then look at it again. The suspect clearly sees the officers with guns drawn (STOP - surrender); he raises the gun - they shoot him. Because he's an evil SOB he picks up the gun while he's on the ground and is shot some more (shoot to stop). This evils shit then grasps the gun with his left hand and, well...

Almost text book police work. The riots will begin when this officer is found not guilty.

His first turn is away from the cops, then he turns back.

The turn away is the reflex response to the first shot. Watch it slowly. It is a very non-aggressive move - his knees kind of buckle and his near side shoulder rises up as his head starts to drop towards it, then he begins to turn away. Only after wards does he start to right himself and turn into the threat.

That is what getting shot looks like.

Nope. They are trained to shoot to stop. Center mass with good ammo allows you to stop the attack with the fewest number of shots.
This allows the good guy AND the bad guy a better shot at living.

It's also the largest target presented on the human body, making it less likely that you'll miss and hit somebody unintentionally with a stray shit. That's why the "why didnt he just wing him" thing is rubbish. Should he have shot at all, and was he justified in dumping the entire mag into him, are perfectly fair questions though.

It's a legal thing. You have the right to protect your life in self-defense, but there is no right to kill someone. If it happens as part of defending yourself, oh well, but you don't have a right to end his life.

So when you talk about killing someone, that gives the impression you were being aggressive, not defensive, in your actions. It undermines your claim that you did it in self-defense.

this is a weird topic that I can't wrap my head around, but ballistic scientists say that there is simply not enough KE in a bullet to move you much at all.

On the other hand, field observers (cops, soldiers) testify it does happen.

One theory I saw, which I found to be preposterous, is that people *jump off their feet* when hit by a bullet, because they've been conditioned by movie-watching to think they're supposed to.

More likely it's some effect of the nervous system suddenly being interrupted and the body going immediately slack which produces an unexpected motion that resembles a jerk.

Posted by: Willy J. at November 24, 2015 09:09 PM (wHX4r)

342 A couple things strike me about this. I am told (but not positive) that a man with a knife can cover 21 feet in less than 1 sec (abt the time it takes to aim and shoot). The police appear to be within 15-20 feet of the suspect and he is waving the knife. Even if the suspect is moving sideways, he could turn and be on one of the cops within less than one second. You will note that he was initially walking directly toward the police car and then veers off to the side.

Second thing is that the shooting would never have happened if he hadn't robbed a place at knifepoint and then was carrying the knife in a menacing manner. Most of us don't have to worry about getting shot by this so-called crazy cop because we know better than to rob a place at gunpoint and we wouldn't be brandishing a knife if we happened to do so and were being approached by cops.

Sympathy meter ..... at zero....this kind of shit doesn't happen to good law abiding people. I'll let a jury decide after listening to experts about police tactics and what constitutes a deadly threat. Seems like everyone is an expert and just knows that he wasnt a direct threat to a cop even though he was carrying/brandishing a knife.

I say....have at the rioting. I am still in the let it burn mode from the 2012 election. Let's burn the whole f*cking society down and start over because nothing else seems to get people to realize we are going down the shitter. The sooner the better that the masses begin to see the whole reality of what is happening.

I can also tell you that good people are going to steer clear of the policing profession (and probably already are)...since it is all downside and the pay ain't worth the stress and hassle. You are going to see more and more of these mistakes because you are not going to attract the best and brightest to this profession (hey seems just like what is happening in politics - where the dumbest f*cks around are running for political office and being elected). So just like the citizens get the governance they voted for...they are also getting the policing that they deserve. If you don't make it a compelling profession and the societies don't actively support them, you aren't going to get the best. Enjoy the riots Chicago. Should be an eye opener for some of the regular folks.

I think the disconnect here is simply generational. Unfortunately, our pussified ROE has made the rounds: there was a time in which we did indeed "shoot to kill," but now it's all about "I feared for my life and fired only to neutralize the threat." Hate to say it COJ, but that type of thinking and training is not only endemic in domestic LEO but in today's military as well.

why should a cop, or anyone else, have to risk their own life to protect the life of a scumbag? The salient difference here is that the target is a violent criminal. not that he is black.

356 I think the disconnect here is simply generational.

Lets not go astray here. Your statement in 287 that I gave you grief over was:
Nope. They are trained to shoot to stop. Center mass with good ammo allows you to stop the attack with the fewest number of shots. This allows the good guy AND the bad guy a better shot at living.[i/]

They are not[i/] trained to shoot to stop[b/]. They are trained to use deadly force when necessary. The operative term being deadly. When deadly force is used, there is no overriding concern or attempt to stop the aggressor without killing him. If it works out that way well; bully for him.

Yes, you are correct in that no gun is going to be 100% in ending the life of an assailant however, I would argue that the cases you cited are the exception rather than the rule.

If it's brown flip it and start counting again. Drop a couple tablespoons of butter into the pan and when it's melted baste the top of the steak until the same time is up. If it's too rare stick in the pan or microwave for a few secs until it's to your liking. You don't need a thermometer IMHO.

It'll get tough and dry because there's not enough fat in it. Hot and fast is the trick.

Posted by: dartist at November 24, 2015 09:49 PM (/tTDo)

467 If we are going to go into detail, I use a technique from that guy on the food channel.

Heat your oven has hot as it will go. Put cast iron skillet in it to soak up the heat. While all that is heating, pat dry your steak and sprinkle with koshering salt. Pat with some oil. When the oven is preheated, take the skillet up to the range top on high heat. Turn on the fan. When the skillet starts to smoke, throw the steaks in. Use tongs not a fork. After a minute, flip the steaks. After another minute, flip the steaks and move the skillet to the oven. Flip after a minute. Take out after another minute or minute and a half. If you want medium 2 extra minutes. Put the steaks on the counter to rest for 5 or six minutes. Eat.

478 chemjeff, a few points --

If a restaurant served you a black steak, would you think they did a good job of cooking it? The answer is -- No.

Also, steaks don't need to be cooked to a certain internal temperature at all. If you just briefly seared each side, then served it, it would be rare but perfectly safe to eat, as the searing kills any external bacteria but the internal meat is safe from being contaminated. Steaks are not like chicken (or more importantly, pork) that can have internal bad nasties present. Hamburger, being put thru a grinder first, can also have nasties present anywhere in the meat; thus the need to cook past internal pink to be sure of killing off any e coli present.

Restaurants cook steaks over a uniform temperature source, and time the exposure to the degree of doneness ordered.

500 I think a thermometer is the wrong approach to a skillet, stove-top steak. But it is invaluable for use with a broiler.

Stove top, it's all feel, looking at the juice, color and most of all experience.

We gain wisdom from experience.

We gain experience from mistakes. (Mis-Steaks?)

Make lots of mistakes, and grow wise.

In other words, you're going to have to cook yourself up a half dozen attempts to get it right, and take notes, even if just memorizing what you've done.

When you get it right, then learn to do it that way repeatedly, consistently and reliably.

After that, you can adjust for different "doneness", and begin to serve for guests.

I won't bother posting my technique here, as it's rather different from Teh Horde, but I'll tell you one thing.... it results in a really, really good steak.

527 I live in Chicago. In the loop. Didn't see a protest. Saw people there for the Christmas tree.

I wish that Chicago media would pay this close attention to things like Hillary's email, the shooting gallery in Austin and Englewood, Bill Ayers and his buddy Obama, the public pension crisis and who really caused it, and the math behind what public employees make, taxes, sales taxes, the lack of economic opportunity here, regulation against starting a small business, the shitty public school system along with the Democratic Party's deliberate moves to debilitate charter schools and stop school choice.

Maybe I should move to Texas.

So as an aside, is anyone point out that if Laquan hadn't robbed a store
(if I am reading it right) ... the cop wouldn't have shot him?

Reminds me of an old Don Martin cartoon in Mad magazine.

A woman is clipping her toenails. *clip* *clip* clip*

One of them flies into her husband's beer can. *plook*

He glares at her and says, "That's DISGUSTING!"

"Only four out of ten! We'll never win the state finals now!"

In the last panel they're both wearing T-shirts that say something like "State Toenail Clipping Chamionship".

623 Idk if they actually do use fake meat but the roast beast doesn't taste like roast beast. ... Horsey sauce ain't so bad though

The last time I went, it looked like lunchmeat. Thin, slippery, lunchmeat. The horseradish sauce goes a long way to hiding the texture.

625 Also, and this is unfair of me to start a provocation because I'm a few minutes away from being alternately conscious, wtf happened to Burger King.

Back in the day they had a clear differentiator. Flame broiled is better than frying. That was the point they made in the ads.

You'd see the conveyor belt in the store carrying sweet sweet beef over an open flame and then it came out as a Whopper.

Now they microwave frozen beef patties. When did the world give up on standards?

626 I'm the same way with bbq. I've never had bad bbq. Or chinese food.

Suddenly...... a cell phone rings, "Hello, I can't talk now I'm at the theater. The show is going to start any second now." A booming voice carriers throughout the theater.

641 Dude, Burger King, really sucks so bad. The one nearest to me is so ghetto and it's in an upscale part of town. All the chicks have neck tattoos or are physically repulsive and sweaty. Like they purposely try to find the trashiest people to hire who no one would want touching their food. I like their coffee, and that's about it. They used to make an excellent mustard whopper. The place has gone to shit. Plus they've decided to get in on the ghey
