He's babbling that we shouldn't show fear, because we've done so before, to our regret.

[Update: Andy] And then this happened ...

1 The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.

106 OT (and shamelessly reposted from the earlier open thread, because I worked on this far too long for it to be totally unseen):

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says he’s more scared of “large gatherings of white men that come into schools, theaters and shoot people up” than he is of radical Islamic terrorists. Well, setting aside the fact that lunatics who shoot elementary schools don’t really have any unifying ideology or organization, let’s look at some numbers.

Here are public area shootings in the United States resulting in five or more fatalities since 1990:

1990: 11 killed, including perp, at a car loan office in Jacksonville by a black male.

1991: 23 killed, including perp, at a Luby’s in Killeen, TX, by a white male.

1991: 5 killed, including perp, at the University of Iowa by an Asian male.

1993: 9 killed, including perp, at a San Francisco law office by a white male.

1993: 6 killed on the Long Island Rail Road in New York by a black male.

1998: 5 killed at an Arkansas MS. Both shooters were white males.

1999: 15 killed, including perps, at Columbine HS. Both shooters were white males.

1999: 7 killed, including perp, at a Baptist church in Fort Worth by a white male.

2004: 6 killed on a hunting trip in Wisconsin by an Asian male.

2005: 10 killed, including perp, at Red Lake HS by a Native American male.

2005: 8 killed, including perp, at Wisconsin church by a white male.

2006: 6 killed, including perp, at rural Amish school in PA by a white male.

2006: 7 killed, including perp, at a Seattle rave by a white male.

2007: 33 killed, including perp, at Virginia Tech by an Asian male.

2007: 9 killed, including perp, at an Omaha mall by a white male.

2008: 6 killed, including perp, at Northern Illinois University by a white male.

2008: 7 killed, including perp, at city hall meeting in Missouri by a black male.

2009: 14 killed, including perp, at public office in Binghampton, NY, by an Asian male.

2009: 8 killed at NC nursing home by a white male.

2011: 8 killed at CA hair salon by a white male.

2011: 6 killed at Tucson political rally by a white male.

2012: 7 killed at Oikos University in Oakland by an Asian male.

2012: 12 killed at a CO movie theater by a white male.

2012: 28 killed, including perp, at Sandy Hook ES by a white male.

2013: 7 killed, including perp, at a FL apartment complex by a Hispanic male.

2013: 6 killed, including perp, at Santa Monica College by a Middle Eastern male.

2013: 13 killed, including perp, at the Washington Navy Yard in DC by a black male.

2014: 5 killed, including perp, at a Washington high school by a Native American male.

2015: 10 killed, including perp, at Umpqua CC by a white male.

That’s 29 separate shootings with five or more fatalities (274 innocent fatalities in all) in 26 years, committed by 31 total perpetrators. Of the 31 perps, 18 were white, 5 were Asian, 4 were black, 2 were Native American, 1 was Middle Eastern and 1 was Hispanic. All were male.

If the racial identities of school shooters were proportional to current U.S. demographics, whites would account for 19 of the 31 incidents. So in actuality, they are committing these atrocities at a smaller proportion than you would expect.

Things to keep in mind: I had a minimum number of fatalities. If I removed that, a) I’d be here all day, b) you’d find a small scattering of female perps and c) you’d find a good amount of gang-related shootings occurring on school campuses. It would not further indict white males.

Now, I don’t think race has anything to do with this. Crazy people do crazy things, skin color be damned. But since a mayor of a major American city wants to downplay the threat of radical Islam with this juvenile “gotcha!” towards white males, let’s clarify that he is dead WRONG.

Cracked, of all places, just did an excellent piece on their ideology based on actually reading their magazine.

"The difficulty we've had defeating ISIS suggests that, maybe, we don't really understand who and what the fuck they are. Everything we hear is filtered through politicians and pundits, each with their own agenda ("You know what ISIS is afraid of? Me, Donald Goddamned Trump!"). Fortunately, it turns out that finding out what ISIS wants is like finding out what a vegan eats: They'll tell you. Which is to say that ISIS has a magazine."

In the same way, I don't think he has a clue as to who Assad is or what his rule means to Syria. He wants to keep the "Arab Spring" going, and will topple anyone who gets in his way, whether good or bad.

who cares who used the WWI-era sarin gas?

Why is it such a big deal? chemical weapons suck as weapons, thats why no one uses them anymore and why everyone agreed to ban them.

Its incredibly expensive and difficult to get the gas where you need it, it kills indiscriminately, and used outside it dissipates too quickly to kill large numbers of people.

It just seems like a weird obsession from a country that dropped 2 nuclear bombs.

The lifting of sanctions was announced last Thursday, and an expert cited by the Washington Free Beacon on Tuesday warned the move showed a lenient stance by the US in catering to Iran even before the Islamic regime holds up its side of the controversial nuclear deal.

Posted by: Danube River Guide at November 24, 2015 01:09 PM (mcm0N)

There are no indigenous forces to help us. Our options are to help Assad and his Shia militia (aka the Syrian army) or to help ISIS and their Sunni militia (aka the Syrian tribesmen + Sunni jihadists from all over the world flocking to the caliphate.) OR to not help anyone.

Those are the options.

If the Sunnis take control of Syria, we end up with Afghanistan under Taliban rule, but way worse and with way more resources and money. This guarantees a growing caliphate and more terrorist attacks for the west.

If the Shia stay in control, they will hunt down and slaughter many of the Sunnis. This will be horrific for the Sunnis involved, but will have limited to no effect on us western countries.

Whenever something pops up that is severely damaging to this Administration they pump the news cycle with something outlandish (and arguably harmless) because they know the social media groups will gobble it up, chew it to death, and spit it out.

Fox News broke their story on Administration advisors doctoring intelligence reports to reflect their position. They broke it on a Monday which means they have much more to provide. It, also, suggests that other media outlets are on the same trail since Fox broke it on the first day of a new week. Sure enough, the Daily Beast and one of the Brit papers had more to provide within 24 hours of Fox breaking the story.

Obama and his crew want you talking about this idiotic non-sequetor (sic) until Thanksgiving, because then the media drive-byes can hide it under their Thanksgiving coverage (as 40% of the American public travels to and fro).

This is pure manipulation of the news cycle by Obama, because they're sweating the Pentagon stuff.

Two areas where the Muslim Brotherhood were very prominent were Egypt and Syria. Egypt tried to crush the MB and threw hundreds of members into jails where they became further radicalized. One of those guys was Zawahiri.

Assad's father outlawed the MB decades ago and made membership a crime punishable by death.

Obama backed the MB candidate in Egypt during their uprising a few years ago. There are a growing number of MB members in the Syrian rebel group trying to take out Assad.

Not saying that's the only reason but Obama does have a thing for the Muslim Brotherhood.

No, there weren't. There are mercenaries who were willing to take our money, many of whom, as you say, went to fight for ISIS.

But I'm talking about wayyyy back when we first started arming and funding the rebels with our gulf allies and Turkey.

Back when McCain was posing for pictures with the "moderate rebels", all of whom turned out to be, well, not "moderate" at all.

Because there was never a "moderate" movement. The whole Arab spring was a Sunni uprising and a call to jihad and a call for a caliphate.

The entire thing.

That war, from the beginning, was a Sunni v Shia war. And still is.

I guess using the word "moderate" is confusing. Let's put it this way, there were never any SECULAR rebels.

"Secular" was what they were REBELLING against.

It is profoundly abnormal for someone to go from being an obscure backbencher in a state legislature in 2004 to being elected President of the United States in 2008. It's not possible to find ready parallels to that.

The only way something that extraordinary can occur is for something equally extraordinary to precede and enable it. Which in Obama's case was the spectacularly failed George W. Bush presidency. Not a huge Bush fan but by the time he left office Iraq was largely won. Obama gave it away. And Afghanistan was still a work in progress. It is not fair to label either of those as failed wars under his watch.

And Bush had almost nothing to do with the economic meltdown. That was largely the fault of the Dems in Congress and Clinton's disastrous CRP.

Reagan accepted Bush simply because it was not possible to get elected without cutting some deals with the establishment Northeast money men, and Bush was from a family with whom the northeast establishment types were familiar and comfortable.

One of G.W. Bush's aides later sized the guy up from the standpoint of close experience, and said that among his shortcomings is that he is congenitally incapable of recognizing that religion can be a negative, destructive force in human affairs.

To Dubya, if it's religious, it is hence ipso facto good and praiseworthy. No matter what religion it is. It suffices for something to be religious to earn his beaming praise.
