Stephen Colbert's Ratings Tank, Because, Industry Insiders Say, He's an Asshole

No one likes Colbert.

After an initial burst of interest spurred by CBS’s big-bucks saturation advertising campaign for "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,: the show’s ratings have tanked and it is now running third in late night behind NBC’s Jimmy Fallon and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, who rarely has managed second place before.

The reason? A survey by the Hollywood Reporter found that conservative viewers are turning off Colbert in droves. Nearly twice as many Republicans are watching Kimmel as Colbert, who has turned "Late Show" into a sort of wannabe MSNBC program.

...

Ratings show that 47 percent of Colbert’s viewers identify as Democrats, 17 percent as Republicans. Kimmel's audience is evenly split -- 33 percent Democrats, 32 percent Republicans, while Fallon’s is nearly so (36 percent Democrats, 31 percent Republicans).

He's also frequently losing to Kimmel "in the demo" of 25-48 year olds, or whatever that range is.

Now, you're probably saying "This is the perfect time for Salon to swoop in and embarrass themselves," and as usual you're right:

20 Anyone with half a brain could see how this was going to unfold. You insult have your audience on a regular basis, they are going to leave.

The thing is, Hollywood has a history of just not caring if they hit their numbers as long as their message gets out.

How many dumb left-wing movies get made that totally bomb yet they keep churning them out. Like the last Dan Rather one. Same with all the dinosaur newspapers on life support that have decided they are simply going to be press releases for the DNC.

I could see CBS keeping him on there for 10 years because he makes the cocktail circuit seal clap. My guess is now he'll be far more shrill about his politics.

27 I haven't watched a single episode of it since Letterman went off. Not just because of Colbert's politics, though that didn't help. Just realized none of the people hosting late shows appealed to me anymore. Kimmel's probably the most entertaining at this point, and that's only because he occasionally does stuff like the "Star Wars Special" last night.

Which was pretty funny for a few weeks. Would have made a hilarious SNL skit.

But it went on for 10 years. And got less and less funny every day.

And most people who watched his Comedy Central show in 2014 probably didn't get the reference to 2004 Fox / O'Reilly (with the cheesy graphics and music and over the top "YOU SIR ARE A PINHEAD"-like sayings)

77 Colbert doesn't seem to have the confidence in himself that John Stewart or Bill Maher do. Stewart and Maher sometimes turn on the "seal clappers", the mindless liberals hooting and cheering for anything that sounds remotely liberal without thinking.

Exactly. They look at you like you're a zoo animal. On Syrian immigration the other night I noticed it with a friend of my wife: she was droning on and on about how lengthy and rigorous the "vetting" is, and when I asked her what she imagined was actually happening in that vetting, she had no idea. When I mentioned James Comey and Jeh Johnson answered that question by saying essentially "nothing meaningful happens in vetting, other than interviews, because we generally don't have any information" on the so-called refugees, her face just went blank. She literally looked like she couldn't process counter-narrative facts. They bounced right off her mind-shield.

That's what I expect to happen when my sister decides she can't let me doze peacefully while watching the game. Ah well, I still love them and hope they'll come to their senses. Except for my law professor brother, for whom I have no hope, as he's a lost cause.

Young women for years have been asking to be let into the BSA program. Many, many young women find the GSUSA program unfulfilling (to put it mildly). I just started up a Venture Crew - that's an official BSA program open to both young men and young women between the ages of 14 to 21. They use the BSA Oath and Law. We have 7 girls and 3 boys. They stay in separate tents at night, and I put my tent and the tents of the women leaders in between. The girls asked to get the Crew started because some of them have brothers in the Troop and they saw the guys shooting and rock climbing and wanted to do that themselves. So we took them to what was essentially a Venturer camporee. Among other things they got to shoot 25 rounds from a .22 pistol and 20 rounds of skeet with a 20 ga. shotgun. What other program (other than an NRA one) will do that with girls?
