In the old days, maybe you didn't come back. These days if you get shot down over an active war zone there's high def coverage from multiple angles.

82 Morning, Glories! I seem to have totally missed the morning thread again. A little extra sleep was worth it.

Attended the neighbors' daughter's funeral yesterday morning. I was raised in the old Episcopal church, all stained glass and heavy organ music. This was a modern place with no stained glass, rock equipment on stage (thankfully not used), and I don't remember seeing a crucifix.

Lot of casual cowboy attire, and there's me in coat and tie. Was afraid I'd be mistaken for an usher. The laid-back plain-speaking preacher and service was okay. Again, though, not the kind of ceremony in which I was raised. No "hymns," but modern-ish songs. "Amazing Grace" was on the program, but it was some unrecognizable country-pop variant.

I didn't know the deceased, really. I was surprised to learn she was a great-grandmother, and a year younger than me! I'm still waiting for a grandbaby. The family filled five wide rows of seats. "Miss Vicki" was apparently deeply Christian. Preacher said she probably had "every translation" of the Bible. Heard Psalm 23 from her favorite, the "enhanced" Bible; that was... interesting. She was active in children's ministry which must be wonderful.

Altogether a good life nicely honored.

MOSCOW

Lord Pembroke
The Foreign Office
London

6th April 1943

My Dear Reggie,

In these dark days man tends to look for little shafts of light that spill from Heaven. My days are probably darker than yours, and I need, my God I do, all the light I can get. But I am a decent fellow, and I do not want to be mean and selfish about what little brightness is shed upon me from time to time. So I propose to share with you a tiny flash that has illuminated my sombre life and tell you that God has given me a new Turkish colleague whose card tells me that he is called Mustapha Kunt.

We all feel like that, Reggie, now and then, especially when Spring is upon us, but few of us would care to put it on our cards. It takes a Turk to do that.

(Signed)

Sir Archibald Clerk Kerr,
H.M. Ambassador.

117 Two points on Russkie jet:

A: Reports of pilots shot on descent are from social media; allegation is that it was Syrian Turkmen on the ground; evidence is one pilot dead, one missing; 24 hour rule.

ii: This map appears to be a legit radar tracking of both the Turkish and Russian jets. The flight path of the Russian jet just nicks a bit of Turkish territory that juts into Syria, like that silly piece of MA that's in CT.

137 "It was also said about the Koreans in Vietnam back in the day when we were in Vietnam."

Hackworth in his _Vietnam Primer_ described how American units would patrol all day in crushing Vietnamese heat and humidity with heavy rucks, and would then flop down exhausted in the late afternoon for a smoke and some chow, with many of the men snoozing. They wouldn't budge from that spot. Site preparation was minimal for overnighting it in Injun country.

The Korean units would patrol the same way and then would, in late afternoon, break out the entrenching tools and dig industriously for hours. Others felled trees and cut logs. By nightfall they had a fighting hole for every Korean (typically ROK Marines), with communicating trenches, interlocking fields of fire, and overhead protection. This was, mind you, their normal disposition for _one night_.

Charlie seldom bothered the Koreans at night.

Actually, yes, there is a schism about the use of phallic shaped sex toys in the context of lesbian sex and there are those who take the position that any penetration, digital or otherwise, is nothing more than a mirror of heterosexual sex and must be rejected.

Those positions (no pun intended) are, much like the Dworkin/MacKinnon rantings on heterosexual sex, batshit insane.

166 Turkey, who has allies in Syria who were being bombed by the Russians because the Turkish allies were anti Assad rebels, warned the Russians to stop bombing the Anti Assad rebels in Syria.

The Russian bomber while turning back toward their targets in Syria may have crossed the border with Turkey long enough for Turkish F-16, we assume were piloted by Turkish Pilots and not Americans, to launch air to air missiles at the Russians who were not expecting to be shot down by the Turks.

Or something like that. It's complicated.

And, of course, these are news reports in the news media who have trusted inside sources in the United States, Turkey, Syria (both under the Assad government and rebel forces of numerous different loyalties). If there was a way to make it more complicated than that I'm sure someone will find a way to make it so.

200 If anyone needs the definitive source of what our immigration policies have done to this nation...

http://tinyurl.com/ogda2r2

Some short takes.

from 2000-2013

We took in 15 million people, not including illegals.

11pct from 1st world countries 89pct from the third world shitholes of the world.

We also took in over a million "refugges" all from the 3rd world shit holes.

Bottom line, if there is no serious alteration from our current immigration trajectory, America will literally not be America in less than 25 years.

351 American-made anti-tank missiles are surfacing in Syria as part of a "pilot program" to boost rebel groups but make sure the powerful weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

The anti-tank missiles, called TOWs, are sophisticated weapons designed to kill enemy tanks and blow up reinforced bunkers.

The new program is meant to aid the rebels fighting the Syrian government's armored forces but make sure the weapons don't reach radical Islamist groups also fighting the regime of Bashar Assad, said a former senior government official who has been informally briefed on the program. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss intelligence matters.

"They will try this first and see how it goes" before expanding it, said the former official.

So Russia's twenty five bombers (last number I recall) would be outnumbered if Turkey were to decide to take the Russians out.

And the Iranian F-14s flying escort for the Russian bombers were to make sure the Russians bombed the right targets and were not actually protecting the bombers from hostile aircraft? Because who would want to shoot down a Russian Bomber?

And I can't imagine Obama being so gauche as to openly suggest to Erdogan that he shoot down a Russian jet, but I can imagine him saying some vaguely worded something about self defense and territorial integrity.

It's hard work cooking everything that goes into a Thanksgiving meal, unless you do it the Washington Post method, which is soulless, too healthy, and relies on store-bought pie. If you aren't gong to make something yourself, and don't have a beloved family member or friend whom you trust to create a homemade pumpkin or pecan delight, then go to a good restaurant where trained chefs are producing the food. You will eat a good meal, and have no dishes to do. That's a win-win.

479 Taliban insurgents on Tuesday ambushed a military-contracted helicopter that made an emergency landing in northwest Afghanistan, killing three people in a shootout and capturing 16 other people on board, Afghan officials said.

Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri confirmed the helicopter had gone down in Faryab, a province that has experienced heavy fighting

between the Taliban and Afghan security forces. He would not say where the helicopter was headed or who was on board, and it was not immediately clear why the helicopter was forced to land there.

But an army officer in Faryab, insisting on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the media, said the civilian aircraft had been contracted to transport army personnel. He said that after it landed, Taliban fighters rushed to the area, sparking the shootout and then arresting everyone on board. They later burned the chopper, he added.

481 I still say it should be illegal for sitting congressmen to change parties. They should have to stay that party until the election and change to run as the other party then.

The reasons are many but the main ones are that people elected you partly based on the party affiliation you hold, and you were definitely selected in that party through the primary election process as opposed to against the other party's nominee.

I don't really care who it hurts or helps, its wrong.

503 Not only did no leftovers stink, but we really did have a lot of fun all being in the kitchen preparing food throughout the day. A lot of chatting/catching up w/family happened during those times.

That works when the rest of the family shows up, but on Wednesday and Thursday morning I am Mommy's kitchen slave. I am an only and don't take well to Mommy having an opinion on every single thing.

Also it's logistically hard to drink heavily at that stage, which would help.

Also, I'm a better cook than Mommy so I should be telling her what to do.

What I thought was going to be my best Thanksgiving was the year when she had just had surgery. I was in charge of the cooking, I expected her to hide in the bedroom and just be wheeled out for the denoument.

Instead she ensconced herself in a comfy chair in the kitchen and criticized every move I made. Then when everything came out perfect she praised me for how well I did, as if she'd never made my morning miserable.

When the family shows up it becomes pleasant and all the things you do family holidays for, but I'm kind of dreading the part before that.

Yep. I stocked up on plastic containers for everyone to take home leftovers.

One of the main reasons I've been into it the past couple of years, is son being home. He leaned over to me in church Sunday, as the pastor was talking about Thanksgiving and being thankful all the time, and whispered, "Mom, I CAN'T WAIT for your dinner!" 548 Since some are talking about turkey cooking. My bit of advice is to NOT follow Alton Brown's (from Good Eats) cooking advice for turkey.

He says to cook the turkey at 500 F for 30 minutes and then lower the temperature. DO NOT DO THIS as it will burn the bird and could cause a fire.

He ended up doing a follow up episode supposedly focusing on doing stuffing in the bird, but it really was him changing his turkey cooking procedure. I guess his lawyers said he couldn't come out with a mea culpa from his first recommendation due to legal liabilities.

Luckily Article 5 says we 'may' respond... it does not say we HAVE to respond, nor how...

It was basically put in place to make it so the US President would not have to go through Congress if any NATO member was attacked... as he was able to under auspices of the Treaty, and would not have to go to Congress for a declaration of War...

Which is exactly why I think Turkey will prod the Russian Bear into doing something against Turkish troops, or soil... so they CAN invoke Article 5, which then allows their friend Obama a hand not tied by Congress... which will allow the US to directly support a Turkish invasion of Syria.

578 If you look at the confluence of forces in Syria, and realize that Obama isn't really a force to be reckoned with, then think back to Tunisia and Morocco (2011), Libya (started Feb 2009 - 2011) (Benghazi), Egypt.

You realize that Putin is the King maker. His decisions are the important ones that make or break everything. Russian and Iran, with Syria against NATO, Turkey and the US.

So then you wonder, did Obama really foresee all of this when he started in Libya a few months after taking office.

So what will Putin do? It's his call. We're just innocent bystanders, sitting on the balcony watching stray bullets fly.

586 Im leaning heavily toward trying to write up a short story based on Sherlock Holmes, using one of those 100-odd throw away case titles Watson mentions. I have the skeleton of a case in mind.

I reject the current scheme of world war designation though. To me a "world war" is one in which most of the planet's continents and multiple nations across oceans are engaged in hostile activities against each other involving political and military activity.

With that definition, the Napoleonic war was WWI. The Great War is WWII. The Nazi/Allies war was WWIII. The Cold War was WWIV. And the War on Terror is WWV.

587 To the point about Rawlings:

Since 1990, there have been 29 shootings with five or more fatalities in the US. Of the 31 perpetrators, 18 were white. If things were proportional to demographics, 19 would be white.

589 Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says he’s more scared of “large gatherings of white men that come into schools, theaters and shoot people up” than he is of radical Islamic terrorists. Well, setting aside the fact that lunatics who shoot elementary schools don’t really have any unifying ideology or organization, let’s look at some numbers.

Here are public area shootings in the United States resulting in five or more fatalities since 1990:

1990: 11 killed, including perp, at a car loan office in Jacksonville by a black male.

1991: 23 killed, including perp, at a Luby’s in Killeen, TX, by a white male.

1991: 5 killed, including perp, at the University of Iowa by an Asian male.

1993: 9 killed, including perp, at a San Francisco law office by a white male.

1993: 6 killed on the Long Island Rail Road in New York by a black male.

1998: 5 killed at an Arkansas MS. Both shooters were white males.

1999: 15 killed, including perps, at Columbine HS. Both shooters were white males.

1999: 7 killed, including perp, at a Baptist church in Fort Worth by a white male.

2004: 6 killed on a hunting trip in Wisconsin by an Asian male.

2005: 10 killed, including perp, at Red Lake HS by a Native American male.

2005: 8 killed, including perp, at Wisconsin church by a white male.

2006: 6 killed, including perp, at rural Amish school in PA by a white male.
2006: 7 killed, including perp, at a Seattle rave by a white male.

2007: 33 killed, including perp, at Virginia Tech by an Asian male.

2007: 9 killed, including perp, at an Omaha mall by a white male.

2008: 6 killed, including perp, at Northern Illinois University by a white male.

2008: 7 killed, including perp, at city hall meeting in Missouri by a black male.

2009: 14 killed, including perp, at public office in Binghampton, NY, by an Asian male.

2009: 8 killed at NC nursing home by a white male.

2011: 8 killed at CA hair salon by a white male.

2011: 6 killed at Tucson political rally by a white male.

2012: 7 killed at Oikos University in Oakland by an Asian male.

2012: 12 killed at a CO movie theater by a white male.

2012: 28 killed, including perp, at Sandy Hook ES by a white male.

2013: 7 killed, including perp, at a FL apartment complex by a Hispanic male.

2013: 6 killed, including perp, at Santa Monica College by a Middle Eastern male.

2013: 13 killed, including perp, at the Washington Navy Yard in DC by a black male.

2014: 5 killed, including perp, at a Washington high school by a Native American male.

2015: 10 killed, including perp, at Umpqua CC by a white male.

That’s 29 separate shootings with five or more fatalities (274 innocent fatalities in all) in 26 years, committed by 31 total perpetrators. Of the 31 perps, 18 were white, 5 were Asian, 4 were black, 2 were Native American, 1 was Middle Eastern and 1 was Hispanic. All were male.

If the racial identities of school shooters were proportional to current U.S. demographics, whites would account for 19 of the 31 incidents. So in actuality, they are committing these atrocities at a smaller proportion than you would expect.

Things to keep in mind: I had a minimum number of fatalities. If I removed that, a) I’d be here all day, b) you’d find a small scattering of female perps and c) you’d find a good amount of gang-related shootings occurring on school campuses. It would not further indict white males.

Now, I don’t think race has anything to do with this. Crazy people do crazy things, skin color be damned. But since a mayor of a major American city wants to downplay the threat of radical Islam with this juvenile “gotcha!” towards white males, let’s clarify that he is dead WRONG.
