Arrests Made In "High Voltage" Terror Sweeps in Belgium; & The Long Night of the Cats

There was a voluntary lockdown on media reportage and reports on social media, so as not to tip off terrorists, but now some information is being released.

Six terror suspects have been arrested and one wounded after co-ordinated police raids described as "high voltage" took place across the Belgium capital, Liege and Charleroi.

Residents in properties close to where police swooped were told to stay indoors and away from the windows.

Shots were exchanged between police and suspected Islamists in a night of high tension that was finally brought to an end at around 11pm UK time.

A press conference is being held at 11.30pm UK time giving details on the incident by the Belgian prosecutor.

Police and governments have asked for an embargo on Belgium's anti-terrorism raids, so as not to tip off the targets.

There is speculation that Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdesalam may have been caught or killed, but of course he might have been caught or killed. I don't know why it's worth mentioning that until there's something more.

People were advised to behave normally in these abnormal times.

This report from the Telegraph says that sixteen were arrested, and that Abdesalam got away: He was spotted passing a checkpoint heading for Germany.

Just between us girls, that sounds suspiciously over-detailed to me; I kinda think maybe it's disinformation, and that they did get him, but don't want his fellow murderers to know they're now compromised.

Meanwhile, given the blackout of information on the news and on social media, some people took to inventing their own news footage of the raids, chiefly with cat pictures and videos, of course:

Police operation in progress

Anti-terrorist police conduct an encircling maneuver

EXCLUSIVE: Assault of the Belgian police

A newspaper even used the substitute-cats-for-embargoed-footage meme for its front page:

Headline: Terrorist Threat in Brussels: Police Operations Are in Progress

People were advised to behave normally in these abnormal times.

Wacky, isn't it?

And Kaiser Wilhelm assured all New Yorkers that there is no credible or specific threat to New York...even though ISIS specifically said in a broadcast to the entire world that they will blow up Times Square sometime soon.

Anyone see the movie November Man? It's a "bad guy CIA" does lots of bad guy things and good guy CIA guy does good guy CIA things to make the bad guy stop doing bad things.

OK fine.

But what was the bad stuff the bad guy did? Well he tried to unite Russia and the US in an alliance against Arabs. THE HORROR!! I'm watching and and thinking, uhm this fucker should be promoted to head of the CIA, not taken down.

Your instincts are good on the disinformation angle, ace.

What a stunning contrast to the country formerly known as the US, formerly run by adults and exercising fairly competent information and operational security on matters of life and death.

Where now you have dim third-rate hacks inexplicably given power and responsibility who blab all sorts of vital intel matter the nanosecond they can get in front of a media camera. While operators are still in the field and intel value from risky operations is still being evaluated ....

Nothing is going to "wake up" a meaningful number of Americans. To anything. If they're not directly affected (like, say, they are not among those millions suddenly unable to afford health insurance for the first time in their lives, or in anindustrybeing driven to extinction by absurd unconstitutional regulation, etc.), then it literally doesn't exist to them.

Apart from stupid sports loyalties and rivalries, it's hard to see any community or even a society or culture in the US any more. Just several hundred million people living near each other.

Even if they *are* affected, or become aware of something (like high-profile terror attacks), they lack the tools to productively deal with it. Thus, no "waking up".

I'm pretty fine if Europe descends into chaos sooner than expected. If a few million surprise house guests mooching off of government money the government doesn't really have doesn't wake people up, then screw them.

I'm sure that there's nothing like a few nice days indoors to avoid terror attacks to give people some time to think as well.

And if that's not enough, the constant dead and the threats of more dead.

My near total lack of exposure to pop culture and TV probably means I underestimate how bad things are. Example the stupid ad campaigns geared to fringe markets (e.g. gay) for mainstream almost commodity-like products (canned soup).

When even the bad-faith excuse of "hey, it's just business!" falls utterly flat and is obviously invalid.

And WTF with the Starbucks people? They're as delusional and stupid as a university sociology dept., by the looks of it. First the jaw-dropping "talk about race" idiocy, now effacing traditional winter festival/Christmas images from f***ing coffee cups to be more "inclusive"? WTF?

QuietMan, you've touched on a key item.

The "Inverse Renaissance Man Effect". It's stunning at the level of regular people, as you point out.

But now we've got a whole generation of wealthy people with less sense than any random person you grab off the street. Gates is pretty rich, I believe, but everything I've ever heard him say outside his narrow core specialty is, actually, idiotic. Even at his age, no seasoning or wisdom at all.

Not such a surprise that the Google kids or Zuckerberg are idiots in everything outside the thing that (rather improbably) made them rich. No life experience, little exposure to the real world. But even the older rich, like Jacobs of Qualcomm, are just fucking morons on anything one micron removed from their specialty.

The famous wealthy of prior eras, the guys who literally built/enabled/created the modern economy, typically spent a lifetime getting where they were. Rockefeller and Carnegie and Huntington didn't have IPOs that made them rich as young men. Today's wealthy, at least many of them, show little to no seasoning or wisdom and haven't actually struggled and built anything like one had to do in the old days.

The "Inverse Renaissance Man Effect".

yeah, that "seen passing a checkpoint" thing made no sense even in its own terms. Obviously a wanted person wouldn't just pass by a checkpoint, and if spotted at one, would be pursued and dealt with.

In any case, looks like the Belge have finally decided to at least push back a little on what has been developing there for a long time.

Even if one didn't follow it closely, there have been regular if episodic reports of stunning things there, such as anti-Semitic and anti-police actions and goings-on in certain neighborhoods. Open. Defiant. Organized.

I think the interior min. said just this weekend that the govt. didn't really know who lived in Mollenbeek (sp?), a "no-go" zone if there ever was one.

Yes, Toast, true about Ford. But I'd say my generalization still is worth exploring. And pointing out that the foundations established by the industrial builders have largely become fairly pernicious agents of today's prevailing stupidities (Ford Foundation, Carnegie Endowment) only confirms my point.

Max, news blackout? How about a president and vice-president calling you into the Oval Office in the middle of a shooting war and asking that you not publish a story about an ongoing intelligence operation that is entirely legal, and more to the point materially beneficial to key efforts in combatting the enemy? And you go ahead and publish it anyway.

Not to dredge up that separate and sorry topic, but why the NYT didn't have all its press credentials pulled, and have a furious public campaign of vituperation unleashed against it from the president on down, I will never understand. Of course the fact that a single intel community employee with the smallest possibility of access to the info was allowed to go home before the source of the disclosure was determined was another scandal.

194 I watched a "Justice League" movie yesterday. It dealt with a war with Atlantis. Aquaman grew up above water. They showed him as a badass in a fight in a bar. Gradually, he learned he was from Atlantis, war happens, etc...

It was a pretty good movie, enjoyable, a nice way to kill about an hour and a few minutes.

But this is the third or fourth time, I've seen Aquaman on television shows or movies. They always try to make him badass. The CLOSEST I ever came to liking the guy, he had to hack off his own arm to save his baby and came back with a hook on one hand.

DC reminded me of the media. The media always trys to make me think that Islam is a religion of peace despite everything I see and hear. DC always tries to get me to think of Aquaman as some fantastic superhero, but at the end of the day, he's a strong guy that talks with fish.

DC, I'm a grown man. Everyone doesn't have to be equal. Just admit Aquaman's on the 'C' team and I'm fine with that.

Media, we're adults. All cultures are not equal. Some are freaking barbaric death cults. I can handle that truth as well.

Like has been said, they are trying to introduce doubt into their networks over who is actually dead, wounded, or captured in order to keep them talking. The more cell phone and email chatter there is ("Has anyone seen Abdul?"), the better chance they can localize the next target, using intel created by one raid to aim the next one.

Not a bad plan, builds on McChrystal's JSOC model.

At this point, were I Preezy, I'd demand a real, honest-to-God declaration of War against ISIS and whoever else is needed from the Congress. I'd then promote some good general (Jack Keane?) to 5-star status, to make sure it was known he's in absolute command, make him a "SACMET", Supreme commander, middle east theater, and task him with eradicating ISIS. No rules of engagement, this would be real, declared, official war.

On the home front, state of emergency, and I'd start rounding up and detaining any suspected jihadis and their sympathizers. The radical mosques would be shut down. It's war, remember, and war powers apply.

300 Starbucks is the ideal for a liberal company. They have good products that they sell to liberal Yuppies, while preaching Social Justice and selling you a 50 cent cup of coffee for two dollars.

Mostly air head liberal mommies in my local one. Drop the kids off to private school, come get coffee and chat, or go to private yoga class then go get coffee in sweaty yoga outfits.

Same women everyday. They park in the local deli's lot and his customer finally told them to Get the fuck out and they were outraged. Now he has to have a cop to keep the yuppies women in their SUV's out of his lot.

364 Well, it's true, turkeys are too damn big. I mean, there are smaller ones somewhere, but the chain stores don't order them in. Hard to find one under 20 pounds at "my" Kroger. I'm not crazy about turkeys anyway, but, it is an issue. Last year I had six people over besides "us," and more than half the bird was left over.

On the other hand, I kept a big chicken (capon) in the freezer for the longest time, and big affair did not present itself so I roasted it, parceled it out, made the soup, and all that. And then a month later Whole Family was headed in, I went to the butcher shop and the big grocery, and nobody was stocking capons anymore.

Saddest for me was, Kroger always made a great show of buying up the 4H winning lambs at the state fair, and then having a big lamb promotion. I'd always buy one biggish thing when they first came out, and then watch for the markdowns because lamb is expensive. This year, I never saw it, finally asked, and butcher's aide said they had to throw so much away that stores on this end of town won't be getting any state fair lamb from now on.

Now I have to feel around for which Kroger all the local Greeks and Syrians and Lebanese go to.

Yes, they are helpful. I have a rather strong willed male cat, he is 5 years old, really at the height of his powers. I take the muzzle with me for all vet visits, though he has been tolerating these better of late.
Always wear a heavy long sleeved shirt when applying the muzzle. Gloves of calf skin are also recommended. Also shop goggles.

Boulder is very upscale. During one of our visits, my lefty sis-in-law (Boulder resident) proudly remarked about all the commuting traffic to and from Boulder, saying, "It's because we have so many good jobs here!"

I'm thinking the heavy commuting traffic is because so many people who work in Boulder can't afford to live there.
