AOSHQDD- 2015 Louisiana Runoff Live

Greetings strangers!
The Decision Desk will have live returns for both #LAGov and #LALtGov races here starting at 9pm ET.

In addition, something special.

A live vodcast of the results, demonstrating how we do what we do, begins shortly before 9pm ET.
I will be joined by Andrea Ruth, our resident Democratic elections analyst Miles Coleman, Brent Cochran, RedState's Joe Cunningham, and some guy named JeffB.

Vitter is expected to lose, but after what happened in Kentucky, who knows.
Live vodcast link below.

Follow me on twitter @B_M_Finnigan
and the Desk @AOSHQDD

As always we welcome new volunteers into the fold with each cycle, our November 2016 count stands at just over 160.

We don't have party nominations. Vitter just happened to be the guy who came in second after Edwards in October.

Vitter's brothel issues have hurt him, but it's the toxicity of Bobby Jindal that has really set the stage for the resurrection of the Democrats in Louisiana.

41 ----How is he so toxic? Are people's memories really that short?----

Jindal's been an absentee governor, at a time when Louisiana's economy has been going into the toilet. This year, when the legislature was trying to figure out a way to close the state's $1.6 billion budget deficit, Jindal was nowhere to be found in Baton Rouge, or anywhere else in the state. He was in Iowa instead, selling a "Louisiana Miracle" that was always a mirage. We're worse off than ever after eight years of Jindal, we know it, and there's a reason he's the second-most unpopular governor in the country according to a poll conducted last week. He's a failed governor.

Every politician in this year's elections either ran far away from Jindal, or used him to tar their opponents by association. David Vitter, as the last Republican left standing in the governor's race after the primary, has had to fight perceptions that his governorship would essentially be a Jindal third term. Nothing could be further from the truth. Vitter's been an excellent senator for the state and I think he'd be a great governor; he would actually be the reformer that Bobby Jindal only pretended to be for the benefit of Iowa caucusgoers -- and he and Jindal are well-known political enemies.

Now the Louisiana good-old-boy machine is rearing its head once again, in the form of John Bel Edwards. Edwards is, to put it very simply, a jerk. He's the personification of everything ugly and crooked about Louisiana politics, wrapped in a cultural-conservative lie fed to voters who don't know or understand who he really is. But he's probably going to win tonight. He, and the ruinous policies he'll bring with him, will be Bobby Jindal's legacy here.

57 ----You got specifics on what Jindal did legislatively that got people pissed?----

Pretty much everything, from his privatization plan for the state's charity-hospital system, to his unworkable tax-swap plan for getting rid of the state income tax, to his spit-and-baling-wire budgets that slashed higher education, to his ultimate absence from and disinterest in the state at a time of grave financial crisis. It's crucial to understand that none of the policies Jindal pushed were ever actually meant to WORK over any length of time. They were designed as short-term vehicles to build up his image as a conservative who cut government, for the benefit of his presidential campaign. Jindal was running for president from the day he took office in '08, and was never interested in actually doing his job. We recognize that, we now know that he was hollowing out the state for his own purposes, and we're not amused. When you're the Republican governor of Louisiana and you've got a lower approval rating in the state than Obama, you've done something fuckin' wrong.

79 Red Stick is spot on about Jindal.
And he's exactly right that John Bel Edwards is a sleaze bucket who normally wouldn't have had a chance tonight except for Jindal.
I've been saying for a long time that the Jindal love among the horde is misplaced -- but, hey, he talks a good game and we all fell for it on LA 8 years ago too.
If Vitter wins tonight -- and that's a big IF -- it will he solely due to the Syrian refugee question.

85 Dancing Queen, Jindal has never rubbed me right either.

The stuff about the Ten Commandments a decade ago - he had to know that wouldn't actually get done, it was just a way to get (what he thought were) country rubes to vote for him. And, it turned out, the country rubes DIDN'T vote for him that year. Maybe because they weren't total rubes.

Then there was that lame response to the SOTU where he dissed volcano studies - thereby also annoying Sarah Palin, who was governing a Ring Of Fire state.

I was hoping he'd prove himself governing the state, but, that was just a hope, not an expectation.

Louisiana is in such a budget hole in large part because the state assumes so much financial responsibility for functions of city and parish governments that, in most other states, are taken care of BY those local governments.Jindal's tax-swap plan would have been great in a state like Texas (assuming Texas had a state income tax). In Louisiana, there was no way to make the numbers work. Jindal didn't care, though, 'cause I'm sure that tax-swap sounded great in Iowa -- oh wait, it didn't, did it?

101 I don't think this means much. It's certainly a condemnation of Vitter, but that's been overdue for a long time - and if he goes for re-election to his Senate seat (Com'on LaGOP, primary this guy or die!), there'll probably be a repeat.

JBE on MOST issues is indistinguishable from one of those legendary "moderate Republicans" that keep taking shooting themselves in the budget. He's more open to accepting free stuff from Barl Marx Obamsky, but Kentucky just last month proved there's big limits to that approach. 4 years of John Bel Giveaway and La.'ll go red again. It's just that old saw about candidates getting caught with dead hooker juice on 'em's been updated to include from live ones as well.
