Overnight Open Thread (21 Nov 2015)

A new taxpayer bailout to cover up Obamacare's failure? Oh I'm sure Speaker Ryan and all his talk about having the power of the purse will fold like a cheap suit as is normal for the GOP these days.

Running Shoes

Glad to see Saucony shoes rated high but I had no idea that Skechers had a running shoe. Expensive running shoes are no better, often worse, than cheaper ones.

Artificial Global Warming

"Massively altered": German professor examines NASA GISS temperature datasets.

Ewert uncovered 10 different methods NASA used to alter the data. The 6 most often used methods were:

• Reducing the annual mean in the early phase.
• Reducing the high values in the first warming phase.
• Increasing individual values during the second warming phase.
• Suppression of the second cooling phase starting in 1995.
• Shortening the early decades of the datasets.
• With the long-term datasets, even the first century was shortened.

The methods were employed for stations such as Darwin, Australia and Palma de Mallorca, for example, where cooling trends were suddenly transformed into warming.

Ewert then discovered that NASA having altered the datasets once in March 2012 was not enough. Alterations were made again in August 2012, and yet again in December 2012.

118 To put that kat muzzle on Muffy, grab (gently) the cat by the scruff of the neck and pick it up. It will go limp (just like mama taught it) and use your free hand to slip the muzzle on.

Of course, by then you'll realize that unless you need to work on the cat with both hands, all you need is the scruff-grab, and can throw the muzzle away.

The bowls they will go to will be the Military Bowl, Quick Lane Bowl, Independence Bowl, Birmingham Bowl, or the St. Petersburg Bowl.

I'm thinking the Hokies may be going to the Independence Bowl since that was Beamer's first bowl game that he took them to.

191 My one eyes tailless cat Ra got an adventure today when I had the garage open.

He managed to get up into the rafters. Was apparently walking along a foam insulation panel stored up there and reached the end which extended past the roof A-frame. And his 12lb weight tipped it over.

That is when I hear him yowl and get to see him kinda ride the foam panel to the floor in slow motion. Then once down, he went scampering.

I now have a cat that can surf. Kinda.

(most kids do actually although of course they'll whine and belly ache about it. Since when did adults start listening to their children?)

Dheaper?? The cheapest sneakers on there are over $90. I won't pay more than $25 for sneakers, anymore, and they are fine sneakers. Leather uppers (which is the most important part) and soles that hold together pretty well. The frills on the side and back come off (the glue fails) but they are nothing but decoration, anyway, and I look for sneakers without any colored decorations. Most sneakers, these days, look like clown shoes with all the nutty colors and patterns on them - and the more clownish they are the more expensive they are.

Surprised he has to report to the hospital right away. Would think they'd just have it set up so that he's to report to the hospital ASAP once the heart arrives.

Posted by: qdpsteve at November 22, 2015 12:08 AM (ntObR)

I would figure that he has to be physically waiting there since if anything happened and he just couldn't make it then that would be a transplant heart gone to waste. Even if he could guarantee to make it to the hospital in ten minutes, that one chance out of 1000 that he didn't (traffic accident, etc.) would be enough that they couldn't schedule the heart to come to him until he was there and they probably don't want to keep a heart on ice waiting for one transplant to get to the hospital, as just that wait can turn out to be long and complicated.

It's true that he can still have an accident while waiting at the hospital for the heart to come but that is the sort of problem that has to be accepted ... but getting in touch and then getting from anywhere to the hospital is a risk that is probably unacceptable.

Don't believe this old wives tale. If it's got a load powerful enough to stop an intruder, it's powerful enough to go through 2 layers of drywall. There's been studies done where they've fired various shotgun loads at wall mockups and proved it.

----------
Viable heart tissue has a very short shelf life. My late BIL spent a couple of months in the hospital waiting for a heart/lung transplant. Unfortunately, it really didn't buy him much time, less than six months. After the transplant, he didn't do anything but sit on the couch and get buzzed with whatever he could. Doc's told him to get out and get active, but he just sat there like a mushroom. Loved him dearly, but IMHO it was a waste of a heart/lung transplant.

Just go visit BoxOTruth.com, and look up your hoped-for, favorite load.

The AR-15's standard 5.56, 55 gr. in damn near any hollow-point load, actually penetrates less sheetrock than a 12 ga. with 00 Buck.

And with frangible rounds? About the most house-friendly load you can choose. Except that is, for your hearing.

Expect tinnitus as a permanent after-effect of firing the 5.56 indoors sans hearing protection.

To answer my own question, if I do wear hearing protection to bed, I won't hear the goblin breaking in and the first I'll know about it is when he's staring me in the face.

So I guess some hearing loss is pretty much inevitable in self-defense situations.

They've found those frangible rounds go thru dry wall just fine.

The frangible round was developed to limit ricochets hitting the good guys not staying in the bad guy.

If they could get a round to do that we'd all be in jail for using it because it would most likely be outlawed as being an explosive round.

there's a few out there but the cost just seems a bit much when there's few guarantees.

Just know where people are and where you're aiming (yeah sure, easy to say, hard to do in RL.)

You could always use a cross bow bolt, I guarantee they'll have other things to think about if you nail someone with one of those at 20'.

THEN you haul out the multiple shot tools.

326 Crosley made a lot more radios than cars, but considering the competition their cars weren't bad. "Driving conditions" were different then. Crosley was in refrigeration, too, and IIRC was the first to make those "ice ball" units that had two spheres connected by a tube and valve, with ammonia inside. You put one end in a fire, the other in a bucket of water, and it made ice. Great for safari.

"The" radio to have is a Zenith Transoceanic -- probably the unit Bond rented for his hotel room in Casino Royale -- but any old radio buff will tell you, there's nothing on worth listening to anymore. It's that damned Internet.

Interesting radio character was Atwater Kent. He had a vast manufactory in Philadelphia, far and away the largest radio-set maker in the country. The morning after the union election, he locked the gates and walked away.

334 Today's adventure involved a nunnery and a horse show. The horse show -- Cavalia's Odysseo [ http://cavalia.net/en/odysseo ] was appropriately fun and spectacular -- although you can see a rather large subset of the equine behaviors displayed if you hang out at Gushka's for a bit.

Although it's not "officially documented" the way I'm putting it here, it's clear that Cavalia is an outgrowth from Cirque du Soleil -- as was Cheval....a slightly earlier show that tried to tour with a Cirque-sized tent and went bankrupt after their first season (not before I'd seen them and really enjoyed the show....I made the mistake, however, of not picking up a program because I intended to get the video the following year. Since there was no following year, I wish I'd bought a program). With Cavalia, they went with the "go big or go home" theory and currently use the largest travelling show tent in the world for Odysseo. But, as with its Cirque heritage, this show has the music, has the lights and staging and mechanicals, has the acrobats and drama, and has the merchandising one would expect.

I enjoyed the "Carosello" segment more than I thought I would, given that it only peripherally involved the horses we had come to see, but "Les Anges" was a standout -- equalling any of the best work that Cirque has done. The rest successfully hit the high standard that Cirque has set over the years -- trick riding, dressage, jumping, group management of horses, individuals managing large groups of horses with nearly undetectable cues....they have the dough to hire the best and the infrastructure to show them well.

An odd incident before the show....I make a habit of wandering around and checking out the underpinnings before the show -- where's the light board? where's the sound board? where's the band? -- that sort of thing. So I ended up talking to an usher for a while over by the guitar section of the band. He's standing on a platform about two feet higher than the walkway where I'm standing, so he spent an uncomfortable portion of our discussion bent over the rail to talk or squatted down to talk through the partition....

Anyway, it was mostly "happy happy" and swapping anecdotes, until he mentioned the segment "Appel d'Afrique" as something particularly to be enjoyed, for the singing. Since I'd already perused the program, I knew (a) this was likely to be one of my least favorite segments, and (b) it largely comprised of singing "Owalu guere moufan" -- "no more war in the world". I guess it showed on my face, as he asked what had troubled me. I said, "I guess I'm too much of a cynic." Pressed further, I said, "there are monstrous evils afoot in the world, and sometimes war is the appropriate tool to deal with them. It's like someone declaring, 'no more screwdrivers -- from now on, wrenches only.'"

Anyway, we chatted amiably about a few more things, then resolved to part ways. He stood up....and landed half on me and half on the partition. It only hit him for a moment, but he was initially confused and other passers-by got him to sit down for a bit. It seemed to me that he'd suffered no lasting damage and that he was more concerned about embarrassment (and possible job issues) than anything else, so when he'd sufficiently recovered, he stayed on post and I went on my way.

During the intermission I hunted him down and found out (a) he had no memory of why he hadn't hit something hard [IOW, he'd fully blacked-out and didn't remember landing on me], (b) he was ok, (c) he was being careful, and (d) he intended on discussing this with his physician. I told him he was lucky that I was soft. He seemed a thoughtful, nice guy -- I hope he keeps on it.

338 I think Clara's *concept* as a character on Dr Who is not bad, but as usual the execution is flawed (see River Song). More flawed, in this case.

The reason I stopped watching was Moffat and the writers - though for a minute I blamed Capaldi (though I still think he was the wrong choice), but then I remembered how bad the writers and the BBC screwed Colin Baker, who was also fine in other things. His tenure was widely seen as a disaster (for some of the same reasons I see Capaldi as a disaster - his character has no arc in the first season and few redeeming qualities - he's just an arrogant dickhead).

Clara had a story arc, but it basically ended and they kept going into another story arc which was kind of all-around insulting.

We will have to see what happens after the next "reset" (hopefully along with Moffat's departure - I think he's too much like the BSG writers).

Also, my Nike shoes were less than $40.

Also, billions of dollars rest on CAGW being real, keep asking me why they would lie.

Which is a blessing and a curse. I can still hear fine music and quiet, subtle tones.

I can also hear the ringing in my ears like a sonfabitch, all the damn time.

Oh, and Rickl? Lots of home defense types leave a set of electronic noise cancelling muffs looped over their handy 5.56. Things go bump in the night, the muffs go on when the rifle gets grabbed.

Advantage....not only do you know your own house in the dark, but now you have Superman Hearing, with attendant ear protection if you've gotta make loud noises.

Same home defense types often have a handy night-time gun belt at bedside....it'll have a holstered gun, reloads, flashlight and pouch to hold your cel phone, too.

Having no kids in the house, I've got an 870 with #4 High Velocity turkey loads, electronic muffs and flashlight nearby. The 870 is of the eight round variety, with six reloads on standby in a side-saddle rig.

Other armaments, sadly, went down with the ship.

347 The reason I stopped watching was Moffat and the writers - though for a minute I blamed Capaldi (though I still think he was the wrong choice), but then I remembered how bad the writers and the BBC screwed Colin Baker, who was also fine in other things. His tenure was widely seen as a disaster (for some of the same reasons I see Capaldi as a disaster - his character has no arc in the first season and few redeeming qualities - he's just an arrogant dickhead).

Both Colin Baker and Capaldi have to deal with crappy side-kicks. In "The Two Doctors" Baker was great alone or with Jaime. Capaldi without Clara could show great potential...

While Peri was especially weak at first, I thought she and Clara both shared bad writing, as did Baker(II) and Capaldi.

My other problem with Capaldi is that he seems to have picked the worst traits of the first three doctors (Hatnell's callousness, Troughton's confusion, and Pertwee's arrogance) to make his character.

Epithets fail me, he's just unpleasant to watch. I did struggle through his first season and he really didn't improve (along with miserable episodes like the Robin Hood one, and the Moon Egg one).

someone wants cornbread for Thanksgiving. I was looking at the recipe on the corn meal and below the primary recipe there is a footnote that says for sweater cornbread do the following.

so I am wondering, is cornbread kinda sweet normally? is there a much sweetr or somewhat sweeter version out there? my experience is that there is a hint of sweet nothing you would normally refer to as sweet as a cake.

also, does it really matter if you use regular corn meal or whitened corn meal?

I am happy without the sugar, but I will put in diced up red peppers at times because that also makes it sweet. I have been known to put a dollop of molasses in it, but again it is a taste thing.

Use the freshest cornmeal you can get to make it, it is less dry that way.

393 My recipe is :

Preheat oven to 400F and grease a 9" square pan

Sift together in a large bowl:
2C flour
1C cornmeal
1 Tsp baking soda
3/4 - 1 Tsp salt
(Optional is 2/3 C sugar )

set it aside.

In a smaller bowl beat 2 eggs very well
add:
1 Tbs shortening/oil/butter/fat (Melted, whatever you have and like to use)
and 1-1/2 C milk or buttermilk OR a couple of tablespoons of greek yogurt and water to make it up to 1-1/2 C fluid)

Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients
It is important to not overmix, just mix enough to moisten the dry ingredients completely.

then pour the batter into the pan and bake fro 30 minutes or until a knife stuck into the middle comes out dry, or at least not smeared with raw batter.

let it cool a few minutes and then cut into squares and put into the bread barge

I use any corn meal. I expect the white meal will make a whiter bread, the ground indian corn is dark. Mexican cornmeal is treated with lime so it tastes odd for cornbread, so save that for making tamales.

It is not complicated, and try it either way if you like. Remember you can use the failures to make cornbread stuffing.

you can also put the batter on top of a stew or baked beans to make a corn pone.

401 I hand-grind indian corn with a mill and it comes out sort of coarse. I sieve it to get out the big chunks, but it is still coarse. It softens just fine.

You might have old corn or cornmeal. Mom used to use Indian Maid meal from a box and it was always gritty, and I suspect always old.
If you can, try Bob's Red Mill, that is fairly high end and fresh meal.
Goya also makes a non-mixtalized corn meal that they sell through Mexican markets, they use it for pupusas or arepas, mostly. It is finely ground, almost a flour.

Take 2 lb. of bacon and chop up finely. Heat on low in cast iron skillet until most of the fat has rendered. Add a large fist-full of chiffinaded sage, a red onion finely diced, two shallots, some diced garlic, pepper, diced parsely, and clery salt.

Add to: Two loaves of different artisen breads according to taste, a few whipped eggs, and a few jiggers of bourbon. Addition of heates black walnuts optionaly, but recommented

When combined, return to cast iron skillet (generously buttered), and pat down with a layer of butter on tom. Cover with foil and finish cooking with the Turkey for last hour to half hour (depending on Turkey cooking preferences).

I was boiling flour for paste and wound up with extra, so I tipped the extra into the sourdough pot and the next batch of bread I made came out extra tender and light. But when I tried it again, it didn't. I couldn't figure out the difference.

I think, after reading up on the action of starch in bread, that the boiled paste caused extra gelling of the starch which generally only comes between certain temperatures, and at a higher temperature than the gluten baking, but that leaving it in the pot to work with yeast longer broke the starch down faster so there was not as much to make the bread more tender.
I have to follow up on this to see if it really is an effect of if it is just me.

I just get bored making the same type of bread five times in a row though. I am a terrible research baker.

Write the recipe down. When you travel, leave a copy at some random place. That way, you'll never know and you've still shared.

My mom's family were teachers, and the best compliment is to have people do really good and be able to say, "so-and-so taught me"
Granted, it is different if a lot of money is involved, but if I can teach you to make a bitchin cup of coffee, and you do it and teach others, I have made the world that little teensy bit better.

Granted, take my recipe and piss on me in return, I won't give you my recipe for rissotto or pizza sauce.

So, I really don't have any right not to share it. I might post it on tomorrow's CBD food thread. It really is one of the best things I make. It's just a giant pain to make. A lot of work.

I like the idea of TG, I just don't want to go to family dinners where both sides of the family are there. No place to sit. Half or more of the people there I couldn't give a good shit about. I like drinking and eating and watching football, but I want my comfy chair and I don't want your drunken 2nd cousin yelling at the game because of a bad call, nor do I want your 6 year old spoiled brat of a niece whining the entire time. I understand families of victims are angry but that doesnt mean every stupid thing they say needs to be filmed. They seemed to have fallen into a defense trap where everyone was guilty except the guilty. And frankly most of the victims had unclean hands.
