Quote of the Day I - It's Because of Poverty and Global Warming Edition

"It must be incredibly frustrating as an Islamic terrorist not to have your views and motives taken seriously by the societies you terrorize, even after you have explicitly and repeatedly stated them,"

-- Iraqi writer Faisal Saeed Al Mutar

Quote of the Day II

In essence, the American Secretary of State just announced before the world that he could grasp why the woman in the short skirt was raped but that he had been left scratching his head by the attack on the woman in the pantsuit and the overcoat. "Sure," he said, "I get why they knocked off the hate speakers, but why would they go after progressive kids at a concert? Now things are really serious."

-- Charles Cooke

Quote of the Day III

Hey - if you're a Unique and Special Snowflake(TM) who can't deal with life in the jug, there are ways to stay out, ways that have been pioneered by 99 repeating percent of society since time immemorial. These prison-avoidance strategies are generally centered on not committing felonies. It's so easy even most of your fellow mixed-up, tossed-up, never-come-down trannies do it, which is why you're so ronery and so awfuwwy arone in Castle Leavenwolf.

-- WeaponsMan

Quote of the Day IV

If there's one thing you take away from the Daily Californian essay, it's the pursed-lip'd narrow-eyed glare of someone who is being forced to sit in a room and NOT BE VALIDATED. (Some of the complainants may be angry because they are witnessing the non-validation of others and are compelled to be enraged on their behalf.) College, apparently, is now a place where the notions of people freshly matriculated from high school must be handled with oven mitts and lightly buffed with soft cloth lest their orthodoxies suffer the slightest abrasion. Like the school that canceled the annual performance of The Vagina Monologues because it othered non-traditional women who lacked the titular orifice, it's a delightful example of leftist autophagy. Marx is in foul order in Berkeley not for his ideas, or the heaps of corpses accumulated in his name, but because he had a prostate.

By the way, Foucault died of AIDS, so you can dismiss everything the students wrote. Homophobes and haters. No, kids, don't bother defending yourselves. As your heroes would no doubt say: If it wasn't true, we wouldn't have accused you.

-- James Lileks

Quote of the Day V - Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose Edition

Harvard and Yale are the products of Old New England, which has something to teach in this regard. In 1692 a witch craze swept Salem, Massachusetts, triggered in part by hysterical children, fed by stern divines who sincerely believed in witchcraft, and permitted by a community too terrorized to stand up for due process, let alone prevent hangings and, in one case, the crushing of an innocent man to death by heavy stones because he refused to confess to an absurd, imaginary crime. There is something not entirely different going on today.

-- Eliot Cohen

"F*ck you, you filthy white f*cks!", "F*ck your white tears."

So #BlackLivesMatter activists go on a racist rampage through a Dartmouth library and harass and push around students for various racial crimes including wearing oppressive branded headphones.

dartlibblm

And what was the response of a Dartmouth vice-provost to this? Why to apologize to the thugs for their less than stellar media coverage.

At a community discussion in Cutter-Shabazz on Monday night, several students voiced concerns over portrayals of Thursday's protest, particularly in The Dartmouth Review and on Yik Yak.

Vice provost for student affairs Inge-Lise Ameer was in attendance at the meeting, and she apologized to students who engaged in the protest for the negative responses and media coverage that they have received.

"There's a whole conservative world out there that's not being very nice," Ameer said.

These are all bad people who will do bad things if they are not stopped. Academia delenda est.

And VDH takes an ax to the whole idea that universities are in any way special in The University Gone Feral.

Sweet, Sweet Schadefreude

University of Missouri graduate students, including hunger strike protester Jonathan Butler, have been protesting on campus in part because of cuts to the students' health-care coverage as a result of Obama administration's Affordable Care Act.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the cutbacks were explained in detail on an August posting on the school's website, which said Obamacare's regulations banned employers, like universities, from paying for their grad students' health insurance.

Graduate students would have to buy insurance in individual markets as a result of not being eligible for the insurance plan offered to MU staff and faculty.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported that the Internal Revenue Service posted a bulletin offering guidance on this issue and threatened "severe" penalties for noncompliance.

Well Obama supporters - you got what you wanted so you better damn well eat the whole shit sandwich.

Hillary Sends Her Flying Monkeys After Comedians Who Had The Temerity To Joke About Her

And if she'd threaten and demand the names and personal info of a few no-name comedians who made fun of her, just imagine what she'd do once she has the full power of the presidency. She truly is a horrible human being. And horrible human beings do evil things if they're allowed to.

According to Obama Americans Are In fact Un-American

President Obama says that those who don't agree with his policy are unAmerican. If that is true, just about all Americans are unAmerican. A recent Rasmussen survey asked: "How many refugees from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries should the government allow to come here?" The choices were zero, 10k, 25k, 50k, 65k, 100k, 100+ or unsure. The winner? Zero, at 49%. 20% said 10,000. How many support Obama's determination to admit 100,000 Syrian refugees? Just about none. Only 7% support admitting 100,000 not just from Syria, but from all Middle Eastern countries.

Time to import a new populace who can be the Americans Obama always hoped for.

Contrary to Obama's claim, US Has A History of Admitting Refugees Based on Faith

This Flag Has Reappeared in Germany

And it may or may not be a good thing for Germany but it is most definitely bad for Angela Merkel.

Paul Anka - Son of Syrian Immigrants

Sharkman posted this comment the other day:

510 In an odd coincidence, Steyn's Song of the Week post for today mentions that Sinatra's classic "My Way" was written in part by Paul Anka.
The Anka family patriarch lynched an unpunished child rapist, then fled to the US. Of Lebanese-Syrian extraction, the lynching family received its Surname of Anka (which means "noose" ) from an immigration official who mistook the lynching story for a reference to their family name.
Wow.
Posted by: Sharkman at November 16, 2015 10:04 PM (I3RZp)

And the ONT Truth Squad status of this story is: TRUE.

In fact it appears directly in Anka's 2013 biography My Way: An Autobiography:

Why Concealed Carriers Matter - Even Against Teams of AK-47-Wielding Terrorists

The point of returning fire, of have the 'ability' to return fire, is not to magically have one armed citizen kill five terrorists armed with full auto AK's.

The point of returning fire, any fire at all is . RETURNING FIRE. It is "disruptive," and it takes total operational control away from the terrorists.

Any return fire at all disrupts their plans and denies them complete freedom of movement and action. Because even suicidal terrorists tend to not want to die just this very moment.

Ian McKellen: Bible Vandal

Is it true that when you stay at hotels you tear out the Bible page that condemns homosexuality?

Ian McKellen: I do, absolutely. I'm not proudly defacing the book, but it's a choice between removing that page and throwing away the whole Bible. And I'm not really the first: I got delivered a package of 40 of those pages - Leviticus 18:22 - that had been torn out by a married couple I know. They put them on a bit of string so that I could hang it up in the bathroom.

27 Willowed in the previous thread. For Biancaneve:

My sister and I were thinking about getting tickets for the Rockette's Christmas show and heading to NYC for a day, but now my sister thinks we should put our plans on hold. My rational side says the chance of being a victim of a terrorist attack is exceedingly small and we should go ahead with the trip. My irrational side says why take the chance and go to NYC when ISIS has specifically targeted NYC?

And here's a funny - the other day my mom called to warn me that ISIS is targeting Washington DC. I live in the DC suburbs and rarely go downtown. My sister, on the other hand, works in DC, on the Mall. Did my mother call my sister to warn her? No, she did not. Guess who's mom's favorite? We laughed about it.

Posted by: biancaneve at November 18, 2015 10:48 PM (37TvV)

Well, if ISIS does intend to attack NYC, and wants to attack an iconic target, I can think of no entertainment venue more iconic that Radio City Music Hall. I say cancel the NYC trip, and go to some place obscure, that ISIS does not even know the existence of. And also, write letters to NBC (they own the hall, right?) and the NYC tourist board, telling them why you two are forgoing your trip there....that you are concerned about the terrorist threats, and that none of the politicians elected by New Yorkers, city, State, or Federal, have shown the least inclination to do anything about it. If they come to realize the bottom line is suffering because they kiss muzzie ass, maybe things will change.

32 Gingers? Have I got another story from the playground for you.

I was walking the kids in from recess yesterday, and a fellow came up wearing shorts, with his hair uncombed, looking around wildly and pushed his way into the school. I thought it was odd because it was all of two degrees out just then, but Alaskans are sometimes silly about weather.

Apparently this fellow was pretty drunk, and he started looking at all of the kids. All I could think to do was push the kids into the lunchroom and try to close the doors, to protect them, which I did. The secretary called the cops, and he was hauled off, but not until he demanded that we quit discriminating against his son because of his red hair.

Huh.

Well, it turns out I didn't let him out on the playground because, just like his dad, he was wearing shorts, and had no jacket, let alone a parka or hat or mittens, and I prefer my school kids unfrozen. So, I had discriminated against him and he called his dad, who showed up drunk at lunch. And now has a police record to prove it.

Gingers.

Yeah, that's what I mentally came up with. It's an attack and war and I'd have to treat such a situation like that.

What bugged me most is that I hadn't mentally thought such a scenario through.

When I taught in South Korea, I walked through the schools, noting the entrances, the rooms and mentally had a plan on what I would do to protect the kids and stop whatever attacker might come into the school because crazy crap happens.

But, I guess I'm kind of mad at myself because I haven't thought this type of scenario through and I would have been left mentally unprepared to do anything. Ahhh, the innocence of small town, Canadian farming community life....

128 Yeah, the grad student health insurance thing. That was a big deal here back in August. In all fairness to my fellow grad students, I will say that Mizzou handled the whole thing very badly; the subsidiary campuses at STL and KC were informed several weeks before the start of semester, but we didn't get told until about three days before the mandated deadlines to buy a policy came up. And it applied to the international students as well, many of whom did not understand what was happening at all.

So there were some legitimate gripes there. Unfortunately, some radicals hijacked the griping and turned it into a concerted campaign for a grad student union, which we're still in the midst of. Personally, I found the whole thing a little funny, as I never bothered to buy health insurance through Mizzou or anyone else.

Anyway...thank God it's almost Thanksgiving break.

Basically its like an ongoing Crowdfunder, that instead of paying large sums to a single goal, you pay smaller sums regularly.

Essentially, it lets ordinary people become patrons, like the grand old kings and businessmen and so on in Renaissance times who paid artists and craftsmen and musicians to create. People like Cellini, DaVinci, Michaelangelo, Bach, and so on all had patrons that would pay for them to do their work, and in return got presige of being able to point to their product as being the result of their greatness and generosity (and get works out of it).

If you can all help out, consider going to the site and taking a look, maybe tossing a buck or two at me a month. Its not much, but hey, every little bit helps.

People like Cellini, DaVinci, Michaelangelo, Bach, and so on all had patrons that would pay for them to do their work, and in return got prestige of being able to point to their product as being the result of their greatness and generosity (and get works out of it).

If you can all help out, consider going to the site and taking a look, maybe tossing a buck or two at me a month. Its not much, but hey, every little bit helps.

They put them on a bit of string so that I could hang it up in the bathroom.

Nothing says you're not proud of tearing pages out of the Bible like hanging those pages up so you can admire them every day. I'm not even religious and couldn't care less what this ass does to books i don't read, but that kind of blatant dishonesty needs to be thrown back in the face of whoever is arrogant enough to voice it.

Takes wife and three children down to the harbor. Finds a fishing boat. Puts pistol to captain's head and keeps it there for two days until a USN ship picks them up in the South China Sea. Pays the captain, drops the sidearm overboard, and disembarks.

Guy decides it's time to leave his native land; he'd been an officer in a defeated army, and he could read the tea leaves.

Goes out, empty-handed and returns with a pistol. Where he was, that meant he'd taken it from an officer of the winning army....

Takes wife and three children down to the harbor. Finds a fishing boat. Puts pistol to captain's head and keeps it there for two days until a USN ship picks them up in the South China Sea. Pays the captain, drops the sidearm overboard, and disembarks.

First-class badassery runs in that family.

Her agent is recoiling right now because he knows she has screwed herself for the long term.

These people are "artists" because they crave the instant gratification that they are afforded. When the crowd at Stephen Colbert applauds their latest observation of the world, they get high off of it, and they crave their next fix. So, they start looking for a way to get that instant gratification no matter that it ends up hurting them in the future.

But I also think there's a lot of them (thankfully, quite old by now) who just plain hate internet technology and the new, super-heightened degrees of choice it brings consumers. Went and looked at a truck for sale today; 2005 Nissan Titan. 5.6 liter 4-cam V8. Engine developed a sudden knock, and is now using oil, although doesn't seem to have blowby. Price was right, but I turned it down, because I just didn't see enough upside in it for me to take on yet another project. And it looked like getting that engine out of there would be a bag of snakes. Built like a Ford, with the rear of the engine behind the base of the windshield.

My ears cannot hear the tiny peeping voice of a cellphone or most digital alarm clocks. My go-to alarm clock is an ancient Telechron analog electric clock, which has a loud, raucous AC buzzer for a sound source. And the other nice feature is that, being analog, it won't reset itself to 0100 if the power fails for a few seconds, which is a useful feature when I'm at the rig, where power comes from gensets that occasionally baff out for a few minutes. And analog clocks are much easier to set than digital, too.

I had been hunting and hunting online all over the place online for a "fancy" alarm clock that had the automatic alarm resetting feature which I thought must exist, but didn't find any so far, I didn't realize that it was implied built-in to all of them

I even went to Best Buy and asked the people there, they didn't know, but I expected them to be idiots in the first place anyway, and sure enough they were

An interesting feature of that clock, is that the alarm (as opposed to the radio wake-up) starts out very very softly, and gradually increases in volume. That way you are not startled awake by an abrupt beeping.

Yeah, could be, but the oil pressure seems normal, which kind of counters that. Might also be a bum timing chain tensioner. Or maybe it dropped a valve. Seller says it now uses oil a lot. I took a pass on it. He wants $1500 (Cdn) for it, which is about 1/4 of retail value, but I could see spending another $1500 or so to make it right, plus a lot of my time. And I have no real desire to own one and drive it myself, although it seems like a nice rig. And if I factor in the value of my time, even if I fixed it up fine, and resold it for say $5000, I would end up having earned maybe $20 per hour. Which would be OK if I had no more profitable uses for my time.

If I decide to buy broke-down cars, fix them, and curb them, I'd go with ones that are easier to both work on and sell. Turn them over faster. That one, I can see becoming a millstone.

You missed "peeping". Most electronic gizmos these days have a tiny, tiny speaker that does not reproduce bass notes at all well. And the normal "alarm" sound is a high-pitched beep that sounds like it is pushing 20 kHz (I exaggerate for effect.). My hearing is such that I might hear such things if the sound hits me from the right direction, but no chance at all if its off-axis.

490 This whole phenomenon of groups of people having their own 'days' or months always struck me as kind of narcissistic and silly. You merit a day because you've done something great, not because you happen to be a woman, black, secretary, gay, mother, father, etc.

524 It should be suggested to the special snowflakes on our campuses that any attempt to revoke constitutional amendments must operate in reverse order, with the most recent amendments the first to go. That puts voting for 18-20 year olds on the chopping block almost immediately. And the list just gets better when it comes to removing taxes and special interests from having any influence. It really gets fun around #13, long before freedom of speech is touched.

Posted by: RickZ at November 19, 2015 06:36 AM (Lc+NQ)

533 #526

The whole list comes down to "We actually have to explain this to you? Sigh, alright, from the top."

A lot of it is because some states were getting a bit whacky in the sheer volume of stuff they generated for the SCOTUS or a previously unthinkable circumstance came to be. Who ever thought of specifying term limits on the Presidency before FDR was only made to halt his experiments in social engineering by WWII? Even the war didn't stop him from astoundingly stupid stuff like salary freezes that lead to employers competing for talent offering health care as a perk and starting the long slow decline into insanity of the nation's medical economy.

So much has been taken out of context. The 14th was for the sole purpose of saying, "These guys are citizens. We really mean it and if you keep ignoring that you're going to have troops on your door step." It applied to one group of people at one particular moment in history when the point needed to be made. It has since been used for all sorts of outlandish justifications for special interests to carve out a privilege for themselves. So if the 14th went away, nobody would truly be affected in a negative fashion since everyone to whom it applied is long, long dead.

536 There is more than a little evidence that the witch scare was over Puritans hatred of cutting their own firewood. My paternal lineage ancestors came in with one of the Mathers in 1635 as yeomen to take care of cows. They were promised land, stock, and other stuff but got stiffed because the Puritans were too good and holy to take care of their own household milk cows and didn't like to pay laborers. So the white trash (and dissenters from Wales) disappeared with the beef cattle and some of the dairy herd. They built a ferry and left no tracks. The Puritans tried to sue them but couldn't find them. They turned up on the Chesapeake about 10-12 years later with significant herds of livestock and still building ferries. Sometimes you just have to walk away and leave people to their own devices. If they die they die.

Posted by: Lester at November 19, 2015 06:52 AM (2UPXV)

537 We could eliminate a lot of the later stuff by just saying the definition of a citizen is gender and ethnically neutral. It is applied to all US born or naturalized sentients of the species Homo Sapiens Sapiens until such time as a supermajority of Congress extends the status of sentient to another species or form of entity.

It's too bad women were given the vote before radio and motion pictures with sound became common. Since the amendment and the technology became influential almost simultaneously, it is impossible to say whether the shift in voting patterns can be blamed more on one or the other. Until that time, most president were elected solely on the basis of their written words or transcribed speeches. Images were more likely to be an artist's rendering rather than a photograph in most newspapers.

So we'll never know for sure if the increased importance of candidates' appearance is weighted more on familiarity to all or just women.

Posted by: Epobirs at November 19, 2015 06:55 AM (IdCqF)

538 The only reason the 21st Amendment exists is because the 19th and 20th would have made it a major pain in the ass to simply get rid of the 18th. By the 1930s they decided they didn't need amendments to make such sweeping bans of substances, even those growing wild and natively. The process by which cannabis was outlawed is more than a little farcical and did more to get whites interested in marijuana than any criminal activity.
