Is Faisal Mohammad's Stabbing Rampage An Extension of the Stabbing Intifada Into America?
As authorities worked to establish a motive for the 18-year-old college freshman who stabbed four people on a California campus Wednesday, more disturbing details emerged about the attacker. Faisal Mohammad, who was killed by University of California Merced police, was described by at least one witness as smiling as he slashed at victims, called a loner by a fellow dorm resident and drew praise Thursday from a Twitter account associated with ISIS, which just last week released a series of videos calling for lone wolf stabbing attacks. "May Allah accept him," read a tweet in Arabic from a Twitter account that terrorism experts say has carried previous ISIS propaganda, just minutes after Mohammad’s name was divulged by campus authorities.David French notes this sounds suspiciously like the frenzy of random knife attacks that Israelis are suffering from. I hate to admit this but this didn't occur to me -- I did imagine this man was stabbing people due to "unknown motives," by which I of course mean "Islamist rage," but I did not make the connection to the vicious stabbings in Israel. We should definitely let more and more of these people in. Bringing in people who bring their thousand-year racist wars to the malls and schools of America is good for the economy, a joint study by the Brookings Institute and the Chamber of Commerce has conclusively proven. Only racists, such as Kathy Steinle, could disagree with the idea of an America Without Borders. Incidentally, despite the fact that he was described as a loner who rarely spoke, and is apparently a jihadist nutter, his roommate was quoted as saying he just couldn't believe good ol' Faisal Mohammad was the lunatic mass-stabber. Just couldn't believe it!
Andrew Velasquez is one of three UC Merced students who shared a dorm suite with Mohammed, and he described his roommate as someone who "didn't talk much," Velasquez told CNN affiliate KFSN. "Every time I would try to say something, he seemed like he'd just ignore it," Velasquez told the station. "I never saw him walk with anybody" to class, he said. About Mohammad having been the attacker, Velasquez said: "Why would someone want to do that? I just didn't expect it to be him."A silent, glowering loner with nothing left to lose? Why would you ever suspect him to be a problem? But we're now conditioned to pretend that dangerous people are not dangerous, and that devices which look just like bombs are really just super-amazing clocks. Otherwise, You're Racist (TM).

Jamie Dimon (D-JPM) isn't on board with bitcoin.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Fortune Global Forum, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase JPM 0.90% said that the market for the virtual currency isn't large and it would be stopped by the government before it ever got to that point. Dimon said despite the fact that bitcoin was getting some lip service in Washington, as politicians try to say they support Silicon Valley innovation, he thinks eventually there will be a crackdown.
"Virtual currency, where it's called a bitcoin vs. a U.S. dollar, that's going to be stopped," said Dimon. "No government will ever support a virtual currency that goes around borders and doesn't have the same controls. It's not going to happen."
Just the same, Dimon said JPMorgan had established a study group to examine the blockchain technology used to record bitcoin transactions.
"Block chain is like any other technology," said Dimon. "If it is cheaper, effective, works, and secure, then we are going to use it."

I think I've stumbled across something problematic wrt liberal thinking about Islam.
Liberals would say that that twitter account does not represent true Islam, since Islam is peaceful. But they would never go beyond that to actually condemn it.
But they only fail to condemn things if they believe they are part of a legit PC group, otherwise even a verbal disagreement based on a principled argument is enough to get you labeled as a hateful murderer.
So libs do think they accurately represent "true Islam" after all don't they? Or at least some favored PC group. Otherwise they'd be going after them with the gusto with which they go after non-gay-cake-bakers and the like.

UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland said in a statement Thursday that personal animosities, not a political agenda, motivated 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad. She says Mohammad was a student in the class he attacked Wednesday, but authorities didn't know if he targeted someone in particular.

I'm noticing that the media isn't screaming "Tea party" immediately anymore. So I guess there's that. Multiple stab-wounds, and especially the throat slash, just aren't an American cultural norm (I guess we tend to go from guns straight to blunt objects) so it would have maybe been a hard sell to try to pass it off as tea party. That said, I expect there to be a lot more of that style attack as more people are brought in who don't conform to American culture.

Filipino martial arts - escrima/kali. Krav Maga. Something that is street fight oriented. That teaches weapons. It willimprove your ability to defend yourselfgreatly,very quickly.

And watch their eyes. When I was younger I worked as a store detective. Not a security guard but one of those plainclothes guys who watch the cameras and stops the 'lifters. Even on camera you could see the "shifty eyes" of the criminals. My partner and I would say "he's lookin' around" and we both knew what that meant.
Watch for shifty eyes. Sometimes it's a giveaway.

Not everyone can carry. If you don't carry, learn knife self defense. It's worth it. The techniques are pretty easy and work well especially when your attacker has no reason to believe you know how to defend yourself.
I was in class with a lot of people who were in their 50's and 60's. Couple of guys learning how to fight with canes. This was like 5 years ago even.

I found a beautifully crafted sword cane a couple of years ago.
As a cane, it fit my hand and leg height ideally.
As a sword it had excellent heft and balance.
The unsheathement was fast and fluid, the proverbial twist and strike in a single motion.
I kick myself mentally every time I think of my having passed on it. One of those purchases that you just have to jump on when it's right there in front of you, no chance to change your mind later on.

I have a mace gun. It seemed like the best thing to carry since I always have so many kids with me. I don't feel comfortable with a real gun while I've got a baby in a carrier on my chest, but mace in my purse seemed like a good option. Supposedly it shoots up to 20ft. The water test did, but I've never been in the position to have to shoot the mace.
Self defense while protecting your kids seems like a good self defense class though. I'd definitely be interested in something like that.

Get a small sprayer and fill it with vinegar.
It's non lethal and will work if you aim at the eyes and it's not dangerous if the kids get into it.
Plus it's totally legal everywhere. Just don't say you carry it for self defense (premeditation). It's a cleaning solution and germ fighter.
If you really want to hurt someone put oven cleaner in the sprayer. But that's more dangerous if it leaks and for kids.

Colorado passed an concealed carry law for colleges in 2003. There has not been an illegal incident involving a gun at any Colorado campus since the law took effect.
One note, only a minority of students are legal to carry as you must be 21 in Colorado to obtain a CC permit.

I've had to use it a few times when buying some used books. The seller demanded it, unfortunately. I say unfortunately because setting up an account to actually buy the fucking things took five days to verify info. Then it was another five days to actually get the fucking things. I am not as optimistic as you seem to be about Trump. That's quite a list of things to accomplish.

Also, if anyone is thinking about it, the Filipino martial arts actually teach you sword fighting. They use sticks -light weight rattan canes --to do it. Basically when the Spaniards took their swords away,islanders cut cane sticksand kept training and told the Spanish it was a religious practice.
You will fight one handed first, and if you stick with it you can learn two handed, which is two swords/canes or spada y daga which is a sword and knife, for changing fighting ranges. Itsdancing, with a bit of an edge to it.

I ran into him a few weeks after he was released. He was South of Market behind the Hall of Justice. It was residential area with not another soul in sight. He's a big guy and distinctive looking. But that was a long time ago. I read that he applied and was hired for a city job but fired b/c he was a felon.

I think that's lovely. We had some Christmas carols played on the record player when I was a kid, but my family was not religious even though for some odd reason we had a tiny creche put up
My mother r certainly never talked about the holy day and aside from Quaker meeting which she went to with me when i was a teen she hadn't been in church since she was confirmed as a Presbyterian in the 30's except for weddings

A security guard once showed groups of nurses how to break out of some holds, if someone would sneak up on you from behind, etc. Not sure I would remember that, but one thing I still do is walk with car keys poking out between fingers to gouge eyeballs. He said this would come as a surprise to the bad man. I am pretty sure I would do that, knife or not, if I had the chance, followed by a swift kick to the groin.
