Ben Carson Releases Rap Ad

Eh, it's something.

His voice doesn't really lend itself to a rap track.

Meanwhile, Carson is getting some scandal!-type media press for the revelation of a theory he announced at a commencement in 1998, that the Great Pyramids were designed to store grain, not inter the Pharaohs. For some reason, he says he still clings to this belief.

He thinks the key proof is that the rooms of the pyramids are "hermetically sealed," which only makes sense for a grain silo, and would not make sense for a place of burial. I do not know what the hell is thinking, because grain silos are actually not hermetically sealed, whereas most places of burial are as sealed as the people doing the burying can manage. Given that the Pharaohs were buried with great wealth, money they were supposed to use in the afterlife, and thieves (and all other sorts of people) like great wealth, it makes so much sense the chambers would be "hermetically sealed" that... I'm just baffled.

Also:

In the same speech, he went on to say, "[W]hen you look at the way that the pyramids are made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they'd have to be that way for various reasons. And various of scientists have said, 'Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that's how--' you know, it doesn't require an alien being when God is with you."

He dismisses this "alien" theory, fine, but not before announcing that "various scientists" have endorsed this view.

But then, people have strange pet theories. Just about anyone, no matter how rational, will have their own weird pet theory about some damn thing.

33 Eh, it's silly but his campaign is really making a big push for the black community. I got an email talking about that this morning.

I think you should put up his statement from yesterday (that we were talking about in the last thread) to go with this. It's much less goofy, and is actually one of the better political personal statements I've read.

Tonight, going through all of your questions, I wanted to touch on a few issues that seem to be asked by many people.

I would like to deal with one question tonight in some detail. The issue is experience. Several people ask what they should tell their friends when people say " like Carson but he has no political experience".

You are absolutely right - I have no political experience. The current Members of Congress have a combined 8,700 years of political experience. Are we sure political experience is what we need. Every signer of the Declaration of Independence had no elected office experience. What they had was a deep belief that freedom is a gift from God. They had a determination to rise up against a tyrannical King. They were willing to risk all they had, even their lives, to be free. Today we find ourselves with an entire class of politicians. No one in Philadelphia, during that summer our nation was born, dreamed that service was a career with a pension. America was the land of the Citizen Statesmen. They were merchants, lawyers, farmers - and yes, even doctors. They were willing to stand for freedom. Today, the political class stands in the way, not for the people. They demand pensions and perks. This is not what our Founders envisioned for America. I spent my life treating very ill children. Over 15,000 times I gave my all to prolong their lives. I was blessed to do it. But when it came time for me to retire, I simply could not sit back any longer. These children became my family. What our government is doing to them is outrageous. I am prepared to risk all that I have to try and make a difference in their future. I built one of the nation's best medical centers. I served for two decades on the boards of Costco and Kellogg. I built a national scholarship program.

My experience is very different than what we have come to expect. I grew up poor. I know what it is like to be homeless and hungry. I know the pain of poverty. I also know that education and a mother's love can be the path out of dire poverty. I know what it is like to see water fountains you are not allowed to drink out of because of your skin color. I also know that once you peel back the skin, the brain is the same no matter what your skin color or continent you live on. I know that victimhood is a trap. I know that it is our Christian responsibility to offer those less fortunate a hand up. I know my faith is strong and my ego is small.

I know that my path to the White House is different than most. But I also know I bring all of the pain and joy, the success and failure, the lessons learned through love and sorrow in my life's journey. Bill Clinton was famous for saying "I feel your pain" - well, I have walked in your shoes.

I do not have political experience, I have a life journey. A journey that not only made it possible for me to relate to so many different people, but also one where time and time again I was told I would fail, only to succeed. My candidacy is different, that I grant you. I have neither Donald Trump's money or Jeb Bush's political network. However, I wouldn't trade a single child I treated for all of Trump's money. While I admire the Bush family's dedication to service, I too served -nights, weekends, holidays, birthdays and anniversaries with severely injured patients were my public service.

I didn't go to embassy cocktail parties or beg lobbyists for money. I spent night after night in a quiet, sterile room trying to save the life of a small child. That was my life's service. This is my life's experience. What I have is a lifetime of caring, integrity and honesty. I have experienced the American Dream. No where in the world, other than America, could a man whose ancestors were slaves, rise to become a leading brain surgeon and one day seek the Office of President.

The very fact that I am running is testament to the greatness of America. If all you want is political experience then I cannot be your candidate.

Thank you for staying up with me.

Goodnight,
Ben

122 Actually, black people built the Pyramids but it wasn't to store grain. It was to store cotton, which the black people were forced to pick for the Pharoahs, who were white and spoke with Southern accents. The Pharoahs then used the cotton to make hoods and cloaks that they wore when they burned crosses (then known as "ankhs") on the front lawns of the black slaves' houses.

Our word "Kleagle" actually comes from the Egyptian word for "Esteemed Senior Senator from West Virginia."

133 This ruins Carson, as I worried he would ruin himself as a candidate, because it puts on full display his weaknesses.

His weakness is not ill-founded eccentric notions that he is willing to muse about in public, it's his willingness sound forth without ever having had enough information to discern the solidity of his ideas, and his inability to judge how little information he has. He puts on display thinking errors and limited intellect, not just a lack of information (which is bad enough) or wacky ponderings and Deep Thoughts.

He was actually playing an evangelical version of Neil Degrasse Tyson when he spouted off about the Egyptians not needing aliens and proposing that the pyramids might have had some practical purpose beyond that of tomb (and in some larger senses they certainly did. But he's unwilling to dig into the ancient history of Egypt to figure out what that might be. He just regurgitates some pop theology he read in a young earth tract.

King Tut's body indicates charring; Carter noticed it when he found Tut. Modern theory is that they hurried the process of burial to get him in the ground, did not allow the mummification process enough drying time. Linseed oil + wrappings + not enough drying time = spontaneous combustion. Tut was sealed up and then caught on fire.

Good thing he was already dead! Sealed in a tomb where the bandages you are wrapped in catch on fire would be a terrible way to die.

That's because it is not and never has been about someone being black, white, woman, man, straight or gay. It's not about glass ceilings or historic firsts.

It's about grievance mongering. Carson doesn't allow that. The fact that he's lived the life and over come all the things people whine about is irrelevant.

Contrast to half-black Obama who was raised and spent his whole life in white, upperclass environments. Who never went without anything, never really accomplished anything of value (and still hasn't), never even held a full time job in his entire life, and never held a part time job for any purpose other than padding his resume for the next job. This difference is that the ONLY thing Obama has ever done and the only thing he is good at is perpetuating a victim mentality for his own profit.

It is not an never had been about overcoming a situation. It's about perpetuating it.

202 Republicans can't win over the black vote one at a time, or by trying to be "democrat-light".

If we want to win the inner-cities, we need to take the black all at once, by showing them how they are victims of the democrats who are playing them for chumps.

Some super PAC needs to take up the cause, showing that the vast majority of black kids in the cities can't read, write or make change for a dollar. Then asking "How's voting Democrat working out for you and your kids?"

Hard hitting. The MSM will scream "racist", but it's the truth and the only way things will change.

Get some 10 year old black kid looking into the camera saying "Momma, I don't want to poor all my life". Make the liberals loose their minds with anger at first then watch them break down and cry when they realize it's the truth.

This is the year for change. Make it happen.

If a record is going to be discovered during a background check, you'd think the person is disqualified at that point, so how does removing the box help anybody with priors? To me it seems like it'll be a waste of time and money on applicants who should never reach the background check stage in the first place.

But they were certainly not built for that, and they were built long before Joseph was born. Let's see, a partial list of MAINSTREAM Christian beliefs:

A man can be swallowed by a whale and live inside said whale for several days.
A man can live for hundreds of years; some may have never died.
A bush can burn and speak.
You can hit a rock with a stick and cause water to come gushing out.
Or touch the water with that stick and turn it to blood, real blood.
Thousands of people lived in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth for 40 years--where there is almost no water--eating food that just showed up on the ground.
Another man walked on water after seeing this other fellow do it.
This guy was dead (to the point of stinking, IIRC) and then this guy came along and told him to get up and quit being dead, and he did.
And then there was this guy who was dead, dead, Roman tortured dead, and a few days later he got, done being dead, and went and hung out with his buddies.

Well, at least some guy believing the pyramids were used for grain storage is way, way too far out there . . . .

I understand being nervous before surgery - who isn't?- but the only thing that matters is how good your doctor is at "doing doctor shit," not what he thinks about God, pyramids, or fantasy football. And that is something you should have researched before you agreed to be his patient.

341 163 t's not a pet theory, I'm told it's a mainstay of Seventh Day Adventist teaching

-
?
Posted by: The Great White Snark

Seventh Day Adventism was formulated during a time when archaeologists were first rigorously exploring the pyramids, so it was a"hot topic" during that era. As such, the founders felt it was necessary have some sort of doctrinal "opinion" concerning the pyramids -- just as, for example, some wide-ranging belief system founded today would almost certainly need to have a stance on "gay marriage," even though people in different eras might later look at that and think, "'Gay marriage'? Why in the hell did they find it necessary to render some weird opinion on this oddball topic no one thinks of?" Well, from 2015's vantage point, gay marriage seems like a big hit-button issue, even though it really isn't. Similarly, "the mystery of the pyramids" was a hot-button issue back in the day, even though by now it seems so off-topic.

And since Seventh Day Adventists were positioning themselves as outsiders different from mainstream Christians, they felt it necessary to have an opinion about the pyramids that was different from everyone else's.

So -- "Hey, they're grain storage silos!" instead of "Hey, they're gigantic tombstones!" Really, when you think about it, both suppositions seem equally preposterous (or equally reasonable) upon first glance.

Also keep in mind that it was not until 1922 that an intact tomb was discovered (i.e. Tutankhamun), and prior to that we we're really sure what the burial chambers were like originally, since they ALL had been looted.centuries earlier. Back in the mid-19th-century, when SDA was formulated, it was not an unreasonable theory that hey, maybe this was just to protect grain, since no archaeologist had ever yet found a tomb filled with royal treasure.

Posted by: jewells45 at November 05, 2015 01:40 PM (l/N7H)

343 When I was a kid, I was a minor-league amateur Egyptologist, because of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Mr. Carson would be well-served to rethink this musing--the pyramids (not just the ones at Giza) are basically solid brick with very little internal open space. Imagine an Empire State Building with one elevator shaft and an office suite on one floor, the rest being solid concrete. It would be like buying an SUV and the inside being solid, with the exception of something the size of a Formula I race car cockpit for the driver.

The ratio of brick to open space in the internal volume of the pyramids has got to be in the 90-percent range. Worst granary ever.

Posted by: Horatius at November 05, 2015 01:40 PM (UKhBB)

344 The pyramid issue is so irritating because all of the people going "haha he's so stupid" have literally no idea who built the pyramids or why, but they want to laugh along with the cool kids so they're saying "Ha! Only an idiot could think that!"

Meanwhile, muslims like Obama want to destroy the pyramids all together, yet we don't hear a word about THAT crazy idea.

So, yeah. Fuck 'em.

Well, it is beyond stupid to think that the Pyramids were built to be used as granaries. Do you really think that a people with the mathematical chops to be able to build such things would be so stupid as to build huge structures with such a minute amount of actual space inside to hold grain? Not to mention the considerable difficulty involved to get the grain in and out of the structure.

362 @260

Romney lost because he was a shitty candidate. He created Obamacare. He reversed every position he's ever professed about anything countless times but his record is straight up liberal. Topping it off, he ran a campaign based on what political consultants and the GOP thought was what was right and spend all their money on that ridiculous tech system. He is the posterboy for everything wrong with the GOP.

I agree with your other point though.

Our country is completely lost because entirety of the media, education system, social systems, and political systems are rooted in grievance mongering and perpetuating a culture of handouts and entitlement.

Small scale example: you never see a follow up to "Extreme Home Makeover" because most of the people that got free stuff immediately mortgaged everything squandered all they were given.

Large scale example: the TRILLION dollars that Obama spent in his first year to create jobs and result in noting. No infrastructure, no advancement of any kind. No one is better off and nothing started. A couple of people got cheap suits and we got a bunch of road signs and logos while the White House invented the whole "created or saved" false metric.

Forget a trillion. Give $100,000, heck even $10,000 to a compentent person who does stuff and that will increase by tenfold within a year... and they'll give you your investment back plus interest and dividends.

The truth is no one wants a "hand up" and no one knows the meaning of the word "investment". Everyone wants to be a Kardashian- rich, stupid, and famous without a shred of dignity or talent and who produce nothing.

So if they convince themselves of something that seems intellectually interesting, they'll believe it. Because who is going to contradict them? A patient? An LPN?

See comment #341 -- you're speaking with modern-day knowledge about the pyramids. Not much really was known about their internal structure back in the 1860s yet.

Yes, the theory is a bit kooky, but it's not "stupid" -- remember that in the 1860s was when Darwin's theory first got promulgated, and that until that time 99.99% of "educated" Europeans and Americans thought that all species were created in their present form by God 6,000 years ago.

It was a different era. Proposing an alternate use for the pyramids was not that "stupid" or outlandish, considering most of the other stuff all the "smart" people believed.

1) Lee Harvey Oswald (a Marxist), acting alone, killed JFK and officer JD Tippit. He wounded Gov. Connally and Gen. Edwin Walker. He did this because he wanted to be a great man and hoped his exploits would gain him favor with Fidel Castro. Castro, The Mafia, the CIA, and LBJ all had motive to kill JFK but actually were not involved with Oswald.

2) 9/11 was not an inside job. The people responsible for initially perpetuating this lie are the Communist Party USA. Alex Jones used their lies to become a wealthy man and promulgate his own agenda.

3) Elvis has been dead since August 16, 1977.

4) The USA put men on the moon several times just to prove we could and to discredit the USSR who didn't and still can't.

5) Barack 0bama is a US citizen. However, Barack Obama, Sr. is not his father. His real father is Frank Marshall Davis (Marxist). Barack Obama was groomed by Davis, Bill Ayers and many others to do exactly what he is doing though I doubt they expected him to be so wildly successful.

Modern farms pump nitrogen into their storage facilities.

423 I got to go down into one of the Giza pyramids. Ridiculously long narrow passageway. I'm tall so I was stooped over the whole time.

Me too. I needed a chiropractor after duck walking in a half crouch that long.

Posted by: mustbequantum at November 05, 2015 02:02 PM (MIKMs)

427 Do most people take time to consider what the pyramids were used for. I don't. I just knew some pharaohs were buried in them/underneath them. I don't care what Carson thinks about pyramids.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at November 05, 2015 02:02 PM (No/ki)

428 The granary story is silly. Why would anyone transport grain grown all along the length of the Nile all the way to Giza? Presumably in a famine people elsewhere would like to eat also, in which case you'd have to transport grain back to where it came from. Wouldn't it make more sense to store grain at various depots along the Nile, thereby obviating both problems?

Unless the Pharoahs were Democrats, in which case they might do something that stupid.

I appreciate your insight into the origins of the error. But King Tut was a big deal in the seventies/ early eighties. I would think they all got the memo that the pyramids were not large voids. ( plus that would never have worked with that geometry).

No one gets points for parroting errors.

Anyone else click on that Drudge headline link to the vile video of hispanic kids cussing out Trump? Sick.

Best ad for The Donald there could be. He should show that at his rallies and shove it in the faces of the MFM every time they interview him.

Re building.
So you know why the arch and barrel vault were so important right?
So you didn't have to build a giant stack of stone to hollow out only a small room inside. The arch redirected the compressive force to the supports and the barrel vault is just a collection of arches. So yeah, back then they did have to build giants stacks of stone to create a structure with a comparatively small amount of interior space. They could have built a tower more efficiently but not nearly as high and you would need to build a lot of smaller towers to have the storage space. It would have used a lot less stone but would have had thin walls easier to fail/break into.

But the crux of the matter is, is that it has been established since then by actually entering the pyramids that the grain-storage story is not true. Not even close. But yet, he still believes they're giant, hollow graineries.

Posted by: Soona at November 05, 2015 02:16 PM (Fmupd)

437 See comment #341 -- you're speaking with modern-day knowledge about the pyramids.

Posted by: zombie at November 05, 2015 01:47 PM (jBuUi)

Your account of the history of SDA-ism certainly makes sense. But it seems to me that a smart person like Carson should be able to recognize that subsequently-discovered facts have rendered this historic piece of doctrinal trivia unfounded, and that the best way to deal with is just to quietly ignore it.

And I can certainly draw a distinction between clinging to a particular antique silly notion, and being a fool in general. I can deride that belief in particular, without also necessarily believing the belief-holder (i.e. Carson) to be unfit for office. Frankly, I don't see any way that he could act on this belief in any way that would be detrimental to America's wellbeing.

Now, if he were to start campaigning on a platform of storing America's grain reserves in stone pyramids, I might reconsider.

438 Not even close. But yet, he still believes they're giant, hollow graineries.

I'm not sure why this matter so much to you, but maybe he's been so busy doing brain surgery and studying to not learn more about pyramids, or care? Its a silly idea, but like Ace said: we all got silly ideas, usually about things utterly trivial to us.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 05, 2015 02:20 PM (39g3+)

441 Funny thing is, modern-day salt storage in colder climates (trust me, an ongoing issue for people who drive in winter weather), are weird structures halfway between pyramids and domes.

Posted by: mustbequantum at November 05, 2015 01:52 PM (MIKMs)

Yeah, those are basically tents, made to conform to the shape of a pile of salt, which is a cone.

The pyramids of Egypt are huge piles of rock, with practically no void space to put stuff in.

Ummm, maybe because a pyramid is one of the few ways you can build a really tall structure out of rock that won't fall down, because you haven't yet made the technological leap to the arch?

447 I say this as a Conservative Christian, a Republican, and an engineer: If someone were inspired by God to build a grain storage building, he would come up with a much more efficient design than a giant, solid stone pyramid.
