Quote of the Day I

For some reason, people are nibbl'n around the edges that the Russian airliner that went down over Sinai was taken by AQ/IS terrorists who got hold of Libyan or Syrian SA-2/3/6 etc.

No. Just no. Stop. Go to other theories - this one is bunk.

There is a huge step from a manpad to a no kidding air defense long range SAM. One does not simply throw a SA-3 in the back of a Toyota pickup, drive across a nation or two, plug it in to a Honda generator, go from SAFE to ARM, press a button, and nab an airliner over at 30,000 ft going almost 450kts.

These are complicated bits of kit that the Soviets/Russians built. They take talented and well trained professionals to maintain them, must less use them in an operational environment.

They are also huge. The SA-3 is a bit over 6-meters long. That doesn't even include the deliver truck sized command truck and radar.

-- CDR Salamander on theories that ISIS used a SAM to shoot down the Russian airliner

Quote of the Day II

How strange it must be for people who comfort themselves with the slander that the GOP is a cult of organized racial hatred that the most popular politician among conservatives is a black man. Better to ignore the elephant in the room than account for such an inconvenient fact. The race card is just too valuable politically and psychologically for liberals who need to believe that their political opponents are evil.

-- Jonah Goldberg

Quote of the Day III

Chesterton puzzled over the riddle of "them that do not have the faith and will not have the fun." But perhaps Puritanism is the faith. Perhaps the association of morality with self-denial - with restrictions and prohibitions - has turned the act of self-righteously purging oneself into an end in itself. It's what you do to show that you are better than others, when there is no other remaining way in which you can do that.

And since every good religion needs a devil, the WHO has chosen bacon.

-- Robert Tracinski

Quote of the Day IV

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the world must do everything it can to meet an international goal to fight global warming, arguing that failing to do so could set off large new waves of refugees.

Quote of the Day V

The Germans are always using war in the Balkans as a pretext for *something*. https://t.co/7y23NGH73k

Quote of the Day VI

Specifically, the NBER study claims that for every day above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, there is a drop in the birth rate because it's too hot for sex.

Well, that makes sense, if you think about it. It explains why the overheated Southern hemisphere is losing population, while teeming hordes of Northern immigrants cross the Mediterranean to get to underpopulated Africa. People in places like Brazil and India don't have much of a sex life; it's too hot. It explains, too, why beautiful women are referred to as "cold," and why animals in the mood for sex are described as being "in cold." And why couples looking for a romantic rendezvous schedule trips to Lapland and Siberia rather than the Caribbean.

-- John Hinderaker with tongue firmly in cheek

Quote of the Day VII

So, to recap:

If someone offers you cake and you say, 'Oh, I'd love some!', that's consent.

If someone offers you cake and you don't really feel like eating it but say, 'Sure, I'd love some!', because you don't want to hurt their feelings, that's also consent.

If you say, 'Thanks, but I don't think so', and they convince you to change your mind, that's also consent. It doesn't matter how many times you said no. It doesn't matter if your friend was being an obnoxious, guilt-tripping, sulky, passive-aggressive pest. (Well, it matters. It may be a reason to reconsider your friendship. But it's certainly not a reason to go to the cops.) As long as you were free to refuse the cake without risking some tangible harm, it's up to you to grow a spine.

If you're drunk (but sufficiently in control of your faculties to eat cake.), that's also consent. If you weren't thinking straight and ate so much cake you were sick the next day, chalk it up as a valuable learning experience.

Now, somebody make the above a public service announcement. I even have a title for the campaign: 'Consent: it's a piece of cake.'

-- Cathy Young

Mark Steyn: Manifest Destiny in the New Wild West

Herr Brandl calls this "a demographic shift of epic proportions, one that will change the face of Germany forever". But that's understating it: it will obliterate the face of Germany forever. Frau Merkel will have achieved what Bomber Harris and the Red Army couldn't: she will have wiped Germany off the map.

Long before that, however, she will have extinguished her party and its principal coalition partner. In a country where one-fifth of the population is Muslim, no party that wishes to remain electorally viable will be able to call itself the Christian Democratic Union or Christian Social Union. How about the Craven Dhimmicratic Union?

Obama Considering Going Full Dictator

A newly leaked internal DHS memorandum produced for an off-the-record agency conclave reveals that the Obama administration is actively planning to circumvent a federal court injunction that suspended part of last November's deferral-based amnesty initiative. The document, apparently prepared as follow-up from a DHS "Regulations Retreat" last summer, appears sure to re-ignite concerns in Congress as well as federal judges in the Fifth Circuit. The Administration has already been criticized from the bench for handing out work permits to hundreds of thousands of deferred action beneficiaries, in direct violation of a district court's order. With the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals deciding any day now whether to deny the Administration's request to reverse that injunction, this public leak has come at a critical juncture for U.S. enforcement policy.

If he ignores both Congress and the Courts, is there anything that can restrain him?

Standing up to moderators, standing up to Putin

Obama is using an interesting technique-Alinsky's rule #5 advocating the use of ridicule as a potent weapon-to attack Republicans in their strong suit. In other words, he's well aware, I believe, that the Republicans are considered more intimidating to China and Russia than he is. He's also well aware of-and has been instrumental in orchestrating and using-the fact that the press is generally very friendly to him. But he sees the CNBC debate as an opportunity to cut into that narrative by making a false and mocking assertion that Republicans backed off from and were somehow fearful of the CNBC moderators, and then another false equivalence between dealing with press insults during a debate that's supposed to be a showcase for your thoughts in front of the American people, and the very different process of negotiation with a geopolitical enemy or rival.

Remember this example of Obama's ridicule?

Denmark to Bernie Sanders: Stop Calling Us Socialists

Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen wants to set the record straight about the S-word:

"I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism," he said, "therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy."

In Rasmussen's view, "the Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish."

Yet Another Racist Police Incident Turns Out to Be a Hoax Thanks to Video Footage

A Texas journalism professor's explosive charge that police hassled her for "walking while black," a claim lodged in a guest column in the state's biggest newspaper, doesn't square with the videotape, according to the police chief. . . .

Bland uses the column to lay out her case for allegations of being racially profiled claiming that she was not offered a reason.

"I guess I was simply a brown face in an affluent neighborhood," Bland said in her column.

But dashcam video provided by Corinth Police shows Bland walking in the middle of the street, and captures the two police officers politely advising her to stay on the side of oncoming traffic, so she can see approaching cars. After viewing the footage, Corinth Police Chief Debra Walthall told FoxNews.com she was proud of the way her officers behaved.

...The video shows the two police officers as they get out of their squad car, without turning on the siren as the professor claimed in her column. After telling Bland it would be safer to stay to the side of the street, one cop explains how a truck had earlier tried to pass her but she did not notice that she was in the way.

Two thoughts: 1) How dumb do you have to be to lie about an incident that was almost certainly video recorded and 2) do all professors casually and routinely lie about their interactions with authorities (because 3 makes a trend and 4 makes a theory...)

Agincourt and Long Bows at 600

Henry V: Badass.

The battle of Agincourt was fought on a muddy field in northern France 600 years ago on Sunday - St Crispin's Day, October 25th 1415. Kings, princes, dukes and nobles abounded on either side. It became then and has remained ever since one of the most famous English victories.

Legend says Agincourt was won by arrows. It was not. It was won by men using lead-weighted hammers, poleaxes, mauls and falcon-beaks, the ghastly paraphernalia of medieval hand-to-hand fighting. .

Henry V was an inspirational leader. He fought in the front rank and had a fleuret knocked off his crown. Eighteen Frenchmen had taken a solemn oath to kill him and all of them died at Henry's feet, slaughtered either by the king or by his bodyguard. .

And the French had long bow archers too - so why did they get their asses handed to them by the English?

Why did the French not deploy their own longbowmen? Because to shoot a longbow demanded two difficult skills; the first was an ability to draw an extraordinarily powerful bow (at least three times as powerful as a modern competition bow) and the second, because the string was drawn to the ear, the skill of offsetting the arrow's aim. It took years for a man to develop the muscles and skill, and for reasons that have never been fully understood, such men emerged in Britain, but not on the continent.

...The few had destroyed the many, and most of those few were archers. They were not lords and knights and gentry, but butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers from the shires. They were the ordinary men of England and Wales, and they had met the awesome power of France in hand-to-hand fighting and they had won.

The battle of Agincourt is part of the binding of England, the emergence of the common man as a vital part of the nation. Those common men returned to England with their stories and their pride, and these stories were told in taverns over and over, how a few hungry trapped men had gained an amazing victory. The story is still remembered, even six hundred years later, because it has such power. It is a tale of the common man achieving greatness.

There is an article in Wired about "Autonomous Modular Vehicles"

I was wondering if anyone recalls if this was linked from, maybe, an ONT, or, a commenter recently?

Yes, I did try searching by engines and eyeballs both first.

Putting aside for the moment that "too complicated" issue, since these are Soviet era systems designed to be operated by less than crack troops, consider the following hypothetical.

ISIS or whatever could have commandeered or otherwise co-opted an Egyptian missile battery in the area. Bribes, threats, hostages, moles, sympathizers or such. Then boom.

Of course unlikely, because you'd think Israeli radar would pick up a large SAM launch. But, that one scenario.

What's better depends on how much training you're going to invest in your troops. If you're going to be like England and make an hour of archery practice mandatory after Church every Sunday, then Longbows all the way. It has similar accuracy and a greatly increased rate of fire. If you're going to field untrained illiterate peasants in mass numbers, the simple point and click interface of the crossbow wins.

64 So, the crisis du jour that kept me from longer-term goals was the fiancee's Honda Civic misbehaving. She's been complaining for a while that it'll rev up and down like a heartbeat first thing in the morning -- but last night, it was running unacceptably hot.

Imagine my surprise when both symptoms indicated the same cause. Turns out, the Idle Adjustment Valve on a Honda has coolant running through it (this made no intuitive sense to me because I've lived my entire life in California and it's always "coolant" -- but the engine is built to run coolant through this assembly so that it doesn't freeze). If the assembly gets a bubble of air in the coolant (or runs dry), the valve doesn't work right and the computer "searches" for an optimal idle.....up-and-down, like a heartbeat.

So I do some internet research and watched some youtube videos, and went off to get some antifreeze and a "no-spill funnel", which turned into my next surprise -- the f****** cheap piece of plastic cost $50 at Pep Boys!!!

Did what the video said ("burping the coolant system") watched a bunch of bubbles come up in my new $50 funnel. Topped off the overflow. Assured the fiancee that there was at least a one-in-five chance I'd actually fixed it....

Gotta say, though -- wouldn't have guessed that the most common cause for idle fluctuations on Hondas was coolant....

74 "These are complicated bits of kit that the Soviets/Russians built. They
take talented and well trained professionals to maintain them, must less
use them in an operational environment."

I'm not alleging for one second that this is what happened, but there is a long history of repurposing old combloc arms in creative ways.

I never would have imagined that someone could take the turret off of an old Soviet tracked armored ZSU-23-4 and put it on a light wheeled truck and make it combat-effective, but this has been done.

In the same vein, consumer grade Western aero drones have been getting bigger and more capable practically by the day, and it's not going to be some massive intellectual feat to strap a MANPAD to one of them and lug the thing up to a previously unanticipated engagement altitude, and lie in wait.

I personally figure that the balance of the evidence suggests either an internal barometric bomb smuggled in while the jet was on the tarmac at the poorly policed airport, or an ineptly repaired previous tailstrike that failed the empennage structure. But let's not rule anything out, eh?

They had pictures of them walking up some steps, Letizia (princess at the time, IIRC) and Carla were looking hot, nice asses and legs displayed nicely, contrasted with Moochelle's fat ass, looking like Aunt Esther or somebody.

All of the media played it up as though Moochelle was some fashion queen holding her own if not showing up Carla and Letizia. How they could pretend that and hold a straight face, I do not know.

If you google "Michelle, Carla and Letizia" you can find the pictures.

Crossbows (then) didn't have the range nor the striking power at that range.

Heavier bolt but shorter and less aerodynamic.

Very deadly at under 50 yds or from a castle wall aimed down/out.

And of course the Bowman is faster.

But it's true, the guys who won at Agincourt won by pulling knights off their horses using the falcon beak (similar to a pole axe) after their ill timed charge and then proceeded to gut and pound them to bits.

Special sized knives to go between the joints on the armor and into the helmet. Hammers to compress the Helmet into the skull and an Ice axe like hatchet like to do both.

Teams of two or three would go after a knight. And they were already organized like that. There were two assistants and the Bowman. The assistants would keep the arrows coming and they would move the shield that the bowman stood behind.

Bloody bloody fighting.

(just a poorly informed amateur here)

As I understand it, Napoleon brought 'maneuver' to the battlefield where the objective was to bring your most effective unit to bear on your enemies least effective.

Obviously you can go all the way back to the Greek with their formations and organized units, and the Romans, and I would expect there was an element of maneuver at Agincourt as the Knights attempted to break up the formations.

And Napoleon is credited with the beginnings of logistics.

The article above cites training, and for the weapons of the time, physical fitness.

In contrast, modern man relies on hellfire missiles and extensive training with computer systems. (Single point of failure, take away electricity and what's left.)

126 Good ole Merkel. I remember, in daze of olde, that I thought she was okay. Wrong, Christy!

Ok. So she brings in, without firing a shot and only a rare razor fence here and there in the stupid EU (which was the beginning of the downfall of Europe), rivers of barbarians. These barbarians, mostly mooslem, will propagate like wahhabi wabbits on Cialis. Pausing from humping Swedish women and goats and their many wives, to bow to a rock on their smelly rugs. Replacing the bells of cathedrals with the whinnying call from minarets (which, I am told, are already popping up polluting the fields of Tuscany). bah. And the Sauds have already promised Germany 200 mosques. pfft.

Why, one would ask, are the Sauds not taking these poor refugees? Digressing again, you old bag, Christy. Where was I?

Oh, yes, Merkel. An-gel-a. Why? Does it not occur to your wee pea brain that, uh, these bazillion of barbarians, who are jobless and going to completely bankrupt Europe and then (per Christy financial theory) cause a global crash...oops, digressing again...these stinky Ahmeds and Mo's are going to require both shelter, food production and ENERGY to keep them warm. YOU, Angela, are causing a big huge carbon imprint, no? Think of all the energy of the trains, the secret trains I read about. The secret trains that you hide from the masses because these barbarians squat and poop and smear feces on windows. And they just plain stink, way, way worse than Europeans who shun deodorants.

I've always thought that GPS while nice should not have been depended on. Especially since we no longer have our own launch capacity nor do we have a military presence in orbit.

On one line the voter could vote NO to both. Yes to 42 and No to 42A. Or No to 42 and Yes to 42A.

Then on a separate line could cold for either 42 or 42A.

219 I know this is the ONT and always lots of fun, but I have to take issue with a 'quote of the day'.

"Chesterton puzzled over the riddle of "them that do not have the faith and will not have the fun." But perhaps Puritanism is
the faith. Perhaps the association of morality with self-denial - with
restrictions and prohibitions - has turned the act of self-righteously
purging oneself into an end in itself. It's what you do to show that you
are better than others, when there is no other remaining way in which
you can do that.
And since every good religion needs a devil, the WHO has chosen bacon. -- Robert Tracinski"

That's not it. It's how you prove to yourself you're better than you thought you were. "Others" don't enter into the thought process. Self denial of things you know are harmful to you (such as smoking, for example) has a positive effect on your self image.

223 @94 As I understand it, Napoleon brought 'maneuver' to the battlefield where the objective was to bring your most effective unit to bear on your enemies least effective.
-------------

There was some lead up.

The primary formation in the period immediately prior to the French Revolution was the line. Unfortunately, moving in a line is very difficult. You have to master things like wheeling in order to move in a different direction and stay in a line. During the early period of the French Revolution, the new government of France purged all of the old officers (they couldn't be trusted, after all...). And when some of the other European nations invaded, the French army received a large influx of patriotic recruits, who had absolutely no training in battlefield maneuvers, and no officers who knew how to quickly train them properly. So the French officers organized their men into big "combat columns" (not to be confused with "march column"), and sent them at the enemy formations. The result was a formation that, while not as effective at close range, was much more wieldy and easy to maneuver in. And it was much safer to get close to the enemy in that formation than it was to get close to the enemy in march column. So the French adopted the new formation. And when Napoleon finally came to power, he had a new combat maneuver tool at his disposal that made it easier to get troops from point A to point B on the battlefield.

This is ultimately what screwed him over in Russia. When Napoleon finally abandoned Moscow, the Russians forced his army to travel back to France on the same path that they'd taken on the way in. So the army was forced to travel over ground that they'd already picked clean just a few months earlier.

The old Gnostics held a similar belief, but went a lot further in positing that the God most people knew was an evil imposter they called the Demiurge, and that only the secret knowledge of the enlightened few could save you and reunite you with the One. They held individualism to be flawed and a postulated collective to be greater. In many ways, they were the forerunners of the modern Progs. I'd go as far as to say that the biggest difference is that they think they can abolish individualism and have their perfect little ant mound in this life...

Not exactly. most puritans were Calvinistic, so they weren't worried about failing to earn their way into heaven. They were worried that the world is full of snares and sins and temptation that you have to be careful to avoid, while working in the world. But they took it a bit further by defining anything frivolous, excessively pleasing, or commonly enjoyed by others in the world as dangerous and wise to avoid - to the point of making rules that you should not participate.

They weren't the killjoy no-fun misery factory that their enemies portrayed them as, but they were really strict about how to behave and what not to do.

If Merkel thinks she's importing Germany's Future Industrial Labor Force she's making the kind of deal with the devil that brought plantation slavery to the American South.

Posted by: JEM at November 04, 2015 12:22 AM (o+SC1)

An interesting wrinkle on this is that one institution that brought such massive slavery to the American South.....was largely the American North divesting themselves of slaves before outlawing the practice. This is amusingly referenced here by a guy I wouldn't trust with a burnt match -- http://www.theroot.com/articles /history/2013/01/2nd_middle_passage_slaves_werent_ just_forced_across_the_atlantic.html -- which is reasonably accurate except when he says "relocated from the upper South to the lower South", he's referring to places like Connecticut and Pennsylvania as the "upper South".

The fact is, all of the original colonies held slaves, and all the colonies/states that outlawed slavery first bailed-out slaveowners by allowing them to sell their slaves elsewhere.

Well, 'know' is an important word there. There is all kinds of stuff stored in the microbiology of the brain. It doesn't last forever, cells age, or are lost to disease.

The mechanism(s) that allow recall are part and parcel of the whole deal. They age also, and begin to fail. Sometimes, of course, old 'forgotten' memories seem to resurface on account of the brain's circuits kind of re-wiring, or short-circuiting themselves.

I recall that one researcher made the comment that neural network simulators were similar to brains, in that if you cut one open, and looked inside, what you find is a lot of goo.

Having fussed with some neural networks in trying to deal with non-linear control systems, I have to agree.

Now, that said, I haven't spent the time to fully bleed the system probably, and with it needing a coolant change anyway, I've been putting it off.

BUT, heres the deal, you don't need a $50 funnel to bleed the system. If this last round didn't fix it, try this:

Park the car on an incline, or ramps, or jack the car up and put on stands. (front needs to be a foot or so higher is all)

Open the cap (when cool!) start the car

Run for 2 cycles of the fan, THEN keep going until all the bubbles stop appearing..

Top off the overflow bottle and cap it off. Keep checking the bottle and replace coolant as needed.

Thats what I tried to do, so if this next time doesn't do it, I have to get a new IACV.

Good luck!

276 259 Cthulhu, my 94 Honda has some problems like that, and I've cleaned the IACV etc to try and take care of it. Factory Service Manual says to replace the IACV, but at almost $200 for aftermarket, I'm not going to just throw it at the problem and hope it works.

Good luck!

Islam. And yes, I preemptively denounce myself. It's taqiyya. Every other mainstream religion couches its followers to strive to live honest, upstanding lives. Islam demands of its followers that they lie until they are in a position to subjugate.

I know quite a few Muslims. All of them seem to be fairly normal, given the cultural differences. I like them. Most of them are small business owner types and we seem to share many values. From all outward appearances they are "secular Muslims" who are just living their American Dream. Many of them own liquor stores. My intellect tries to tell me that I have nothing to fear from them, and my gut agrees, and I bet that's true of most of them ( in the current power structure) but....

But....

Their religion tells them to pretend to be exactly that until they don't have to be anymore. There are numerous stories from communities that had Christian and Muslim populations living in peace for generations, until a radical Muslim invader took over, whereupon the long-standing Muslim members of the community turned on their Christian neighbors. How do you live with that? How do you trust that, and trust is the basis for any society or community?

The answer, of course, is to be so strong that radical Islam has no chance of taking over, but we're moving in the opposite direction. So where does that leave us?

I don't know the answer to this problem.

280 273 Mirkarimi the unarmed sheriff LOST?

Another shot of whiskey...
Posted by: JEM

Mirkarimi had about 7 major scandals dogging him, but one of the minor ones was pretty comical:

As Sheriff, he was required by law to pass an annual marksmanship test. Problem is, as a dyed-in-the-wool gun-hating progressive, he had never fired a gun in his life. So he installed a crony at the gun range to cheat on Mirkarimi's marksmanship tests for him and file false reports. Everyone knew he was cheating, but since he was the boss, no one could stop him.

Then his enemies in City Hall managed to pull some strings and get his crony replaced just hours before his most recent test, and when Mirkarimi showed up at the range, he was shocked to see an actual gun-range instructor waiting to score him.

Needless too say, he failed the test, spectacularly.

Which, technically speaking, disqualified him from the Sheriff's office.

Luckily for him, he lost the election before the issue could be pursued.

Been a while, but...

As I recall, one of the great failures to advance was not during Market-Garden, but during the prelude to same, when an entire German division was spread out along a precarious narrow peninsula only a short march north of where a substantial British army had arrived and dug in. With no reserves available to the German commander to secure the foot of the peninsula to cover a fighting retreat.

Half a day's movement against no resistance would have removed the escape route (leaving the marooned German units vulnerable to air, land and sea assault all at once). Simple enough decision, yes? No. It wasn't taken. All of the German forces escaped and remained effective.

always late to these lately - BTW Maet yet another meaty ONT, well done.

So short takes.

Navigation - thought I read that non-GPS navigation (er, actual navigation) was still being taught at Annapolis. Also, certain that I heard the XO of a new Navy ship tell me three years ago that there is a regular interval (forgot how long) at which the relevant bridge personnel are required to navigate without GPS (monthly?).

Merkel - some mystery, some prior signs of trouble. The nuke plant shutdown ("Atomkraft? Nein, danke") was, in a sea of competitive offerings, one of the more stunningly idiotic things done by First World countries in recent years. Then there was/is the pretty pathetically mismanaged Greek and general EU finance situation.

To this I would add that the endangered intelligent minority has got to start dealing with the fact that, as ace jokes, our "elites" are far from it. We now have, and in Europe for some time have had, people of very limited ability "leading" governments. Everyone ties themselves in LaRouchean knots trying to figure out the 13th dimensional chess reason for some idiotic policy. Save yourselves the trouble. These people - and many of their citizens - when it comes to public policy, are just s*t*u*p*i*d.

Posted by: Weirddave at November 04, 2015 01:41 AM (7PWSU)

No, it's simply the percentage of Muslims in the population.

When they are a tiny minority, they say that they just want to be left alone to practice their religion in peace.

As their numbers grow, they start making demands on the majority, such as prayer rooms in schools, footbaths in public restrooms, or Muslim cabdrivers being able to refuse service to passengers carrying alcohol, etc. They begin using lawfare to bend the majority to their will.

By the time they reach 5-10% of the population, they increasingly resort to threats, intimidation, and eventually violence.

This continues to escalate, and non-Muslims begin to move away. So the percentage of Muslims increases even faster, and violence becomes endemic.

Of course, once they pass 50%, then it's "Convert, pay the jizya, or die, infidel."

This pattern has repeated over and over again throughout history, and is as predictable as the sunrise.

Obama is coming dangerously close to exposing the illusion of government. He did promise transparency and it is increasingly clear just how transparent he really is; everyone can see right through him.

Furthermore, there are likely provisions to set-up and run secret courts whose existence and decisions are secret.

Oh, and the brazen lawlessness of the US regime (that term now fits, as to both substance and tone, a sickening but undeniable fact) with illegals.

Congress is far from powerless. But, as we point out and lament by the hour, they refuse to use their power. Refuse.

That's why the hyperbolic humor about a collapsed republic is deadly serious.

And yet the contemptible pathetic US public simply puts up with it. Commenters at ace (a few, and not the dumbest ones) - astonishingly - claim to believe that a party at its national historic high-water mark dare not do its constitutional duty to oppose and eviscerate wildly unpopular policies (O-care and mass illegal migration lawlessness). Any chance for you to play with your mills and lathes lately, or are you still ass deep in alligators?

Still, a bunch of it is first-world problems. Random time-wasters like Fiancee had a bunch of expiring "reward points" that could be exchanged for Cabela's gear....except that you could "wash" it through a Cabela's gift card and end up with the same gear at 2/3 the points. We did our usual Halloween production, and that stuff has yet to be put away. I got to wish my dad, "Happy Birthday" for his 80th....three days late. The Barnes + Noble that I can get to by crossing just 2 streets is doing a "Maker-inspired" event this next weekend, and there's stuff I'm interested in seeing. There's just a whirlwind of stuff demanding my time.

I see. It's just a large plastic funnel, with a bushing to adapt it to the radiator neck. I have the large plastic funnel; it might have cost me five bucks, back in the day. I could make the necessary bushing in about 10 minutes from stuff in my junk box.

Spill-proof? What do you do when the rad has taken all it will take, and you wind up with a pint of coolant still in the funnel?

I do my radiator filling/draining outdoors. The grass doesn't mind a little drink of glycol.

324 From what I've read he was a consummate fuckup, so good riddance.
Posted by: Insomniac

He was no fuckup: the awful things he did, he did them ON PURPOSE.

This, what I'm about to explain, was his major crime -- a policy so baldfacedly evil that in my opinion it makes him an accessory to murder many times over.

Wrap your head around this:

San Francisco is a "sanctuary city," which means that it is municipal policy not to turn over illegal immigrants to the Feds when their only crime is illegal immigration.

That policy itself is of dubious constitutionality, but we'll let that slide for now.

But here's what Mirkarimi did, repeatedly:

The City and County of SF maintained a database of people with outstanding warrants for their arrest. OK -- that's what they're supposed to do. Mirkarimi then had his staff scan the nationwide lists of illegals in the process of being deported by the Feds or the state (which under Obama was way diminished statistically, but it still happened).

Whenever there was a match between the "wanted" list and the "deportation" list, Mirkarimi contacted the jurisdiction or agency about to deport the illegal, and said, "Hold on there, partner! I'm the Sheriff of San Francisco, and we have a warrant for that man's arrest! According to he law, before you can deport him, FIRST you are REQUIRED to extradite him to San Francisco so we can try him for his dastardly crimes!"

So, the jurisdictions and agencies had no choice but to do just that - delay the guy's deportation until he was convicted of his crime in SF, served him time in jail, and THEN was returned to them so they could deport him.

But Mirkarimi, demon that he is, had different plans.

As soon as any prisoner debarked in San Francisco County territory, Mirkarimi ORDERED HIM RELEASED and said, "Welcome to the Sancutary City of San Francisco, pardner! We don't cooperate with the nasty ICE or Homeland Security Blue Meanies. We only summoned you here so that we could free you! That stuff about a warrant for your arrest and a trial? Ha! That was a ruse to trick the Feds!"

Outrageous? Of course. It was beyond outrageous.

But Mirkarimi kept doing this over and over, usually with no media scrutiny or spotlight whatsoever.

Can you guess what happened? All those illegal alien gang members and drug dealers and wife beaters and rapists and psychopaths were let free and, yup, continued committing their crimes against California victims, as criminals are wont to do.

How many rapes, murders, robberies and other crimes can be laid at Mirkarimi's feet? We'll likely never know.

But the whole scheme blew up in his face and became national news when one of the maniacs he saved from deportation and freed onto the streets of San Francisco killed Kathryn Steinle on Pier 14.

Because she was young, pretty, blonde and middle-class, the story went national, especially when it was discovered that her killer was an illegal intentionally freed by the sheriff himself.

But that was only the most well-known incident -- there are likely dozens of others.

Mirkarimi needs to be prosecuted for being an accessory to murder. But they'll let him off the hook. Of course.

I could see that being useful. Antifreeze is costly enough that wasting new stuff to the ground should be avoided for reason of economy, if no other.

Now, it seems to me that for new-fangled cooling systems which are prone to getting trapped air in them, the answer to "burping" them might be to put your filler funnel in a high place, and couple it to the filler fitting by a hose (said hose having a valve or pinchcock on it). That way, you could use hydrostatic head to force the trapped air out via the bleeder valve.

331 307 zombie/torque/cthulhu/others - will the new sheriff be worth anything? Will she conceivably do anything of value in a place as lost to idiocy as SF?
Posted by: rhomboid

As chthulhu said as well, no one knows much about her. She's never run for office before, but was a rank-and-file law enforcement officer who had retired and was lured out of retired specifically because they wanted someone clean and scandal-free to oust Mirkarimi.

But mainly, she had an Irish last name (Hennessey), which generally gives anyone a lock on the sheriff's race in SF.

Like New York, for decades San Francisco was pretty much controlled by the Italians and the Irish, and also like NY, the Italians got City Hall while the Irish controlled law enforcement. So, while SF had a series of Italian mayors and councilmen, the sheriff and/of chief of police were often Irish.

Voters longed for the "good old days," so the clever political machine trotted out soemone who was

- Irish
- Female
- Scandal-free.

Boom -- all the right boxes checked. She won in a landslide.

I heard her talk once -- she seemed innocuous enough.

I suspect she will be an "Ed Lee" sheriff -- someone who is purposely boring and bland.

Voters, even in SF, are sick of flamboyant activists and egomaniacs in public office. Just do your damn job and don't make a scene. That's why Ed Lee got re-elected as mayor -- he's the anti-Newsom.

Yeah, but some incredibly high percentage of people in SF (well over 50%) rent out rooms or beds or in-law apartments either through apps like Air BnB or on craigslist or just informally. It's necessary because it's the only way many people can afford to live in this overpriced burg.

Prop F (the one you're talking about) would have changed the rules to that, basically, every homeowner in the city would be forced to pay the sky-high "hotel tax", just because they rent out a room.

Progressive slam on the brakes when they suddenly realize that their raise-taxes/big-government policies will adversely affect THEM personally.

So, Prop F lost -- too many people would be driven into bankruptcy because of it.

Sometime, self-interest leads to positive results!

"On March 26, 2015, at the request of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, United States Bureau of Prisons (BOP) had turned Sanchez (Steinle's murderer) over to San Francisco authorities for an outstanding drug warrant. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had issued a detainer for Sanchez requesting that he be kept in custody until immigration authorities could pick him up. As a sanctuary city, however, which limits cooperation with ICE only when active charges against the immigrant are identified, San Francisco did not honor the detainer and released him since they found no active warrant for his arrest...."

I was watching Jerry Maguire, and I have to say, I love the scene at the end where he comes back to his wife. The "You complete me" scene. Brings a tear to my eye, it does, because that embodies all that it is to be a man in my eyes.

But,

Because of who I am, in my life it never would have come to that. "You complete me?" What garbage! If my wife didn't complete me, I never would have married her and I damn sure know it's vice versa.

It's a great big stupid world, and I'm feeling kind of queasy as it turns around.

Much as it pains me to recommend such a painful course -- check out the hour-long sidebar with Bill Whittle. So long as criminals prey upon the productive and the reproductive alike, they will be tolerated in r society.

Where are you getting the reference? The ones in the Mediterranean are nicely ambiguous, but every coastal population has had 'em.

Posted by: cthulhu at November 04, 2015 04:08 AM (EzgxV)

379 I haven't watched it. It would seem that if gummint tolerates crime the only way to have an orderly society is to have some vigilantism. At least for the small stuff. The town miscreants get worked over and thrown into the box car of a passing train.

That's why we need to develop our own oil sources. We've got one oil field on the Utah/Colorado border that is, according to GAO estimates of what could be extracted with hydraulic fracturing, roughly equal to the rest of the world's entire proven oil reserves.

They need us a lot more than we need them, and I think we should tell both the Sunnis and Shiites to go to hell.

386 >>>If he ignores both Congress and the Courts, is there anything that can restrain him?

How can this shit be fixed goig forward, if it can? Can EOs be hobbled so that if the president orders an agency to do such and so that violates the law, any low level bureaucrat in that agency can tell the WH, sorry, that's against the law.

I always assumed there were mechanisms in place to prevent this. The president's power should be limited as it would be wrt ordinary citizens. If the president saw me walking down the street in a Hawaiian shirt and didn't like it, he can write all the EOs he wants. I can still tell him to fuck off and die.

390 Goldberg is falling into the "we'll show them we're not racist!" trap. That proves nothing. The racism charge won't stop, and it won't matter if it does. Electing Ben Carson changes nothing except for providing people like Jonah Goldberg I-told-you-so points.

Posted by: bjk at November 04, 2015 05:22 AM (x2rNW)

391 Tracinski falls into the same trap. Showing the left that they're a bunch of Puritans proves nothing. "We're not racists and prudes and you're the real Puritans and racists" is a rhetorical dead-end. Conservatives have to defend their own interests instead of proving that they're better liberals than the left. That's the same trap the "classical liberal" libertarians fall into. It convinces no one but concedes the rhetorical territory to the left.

Yes. We've got to stop letting the left get under our skin. We've got to be as focused and unflappable as they are. As you say, they will continue to slander and try to destroy them no matter what Neville Chamberlainesque depths of appeasement we sink to. We've got to go from "please like me!" to "If you so virulently oppose me, I must be doing something right".

Carson is problematic on a number of positions that he holds. I would not vote for him. Certainly not for appeasement.

398 I know it is difficult to manfully face up to horrific truths, but the Washington DC regime has people, namely CIA, on the ground supporting IS/MB/AQ, i.e. the New Caliphate, and all of the new toys that we have given them. 'Murica is doing some truly evil shit these days. No German civilian "why, we're a civilized people and our government couldn't possibly ever...." type delusions can absolve the culpability of "We The People" in this shitstorm. That ship sailed years ago. In fact, exactly SEVEN years ago.

Is there some type of foundation that follows up on these things? Like a Project Veritas clean up crew?
