House Republicans File Articles of Impeachment Against IRS Commissioner John Koskinen for Making False Statements to Congress

Of course, we know how this will end -- the Democrats will not even show up to the hearings to hear evidence. They'll just show up when it's their turn to talk, and they'll launch into a strident defense of all our wonderful civil servants and how the civil service shouldn't be politicized.

Like, you know. Like using the IRS to target those of the opposite political inclination.

Well whatever. They will vote lockstep in the Senate to absolve Koskinen, except, maybe, Joe Machin, who will take a poll before he votes to see if it's necessary to pretend to care about this, or if it's better for him, poll-wise, to just be what he is, which is an intensely partisan and ideological progressive liberal who wears a cowboy hat every six years to gull the hicks into thinking he's "one of them."

The resolution containing articles of impeachment accused him of "high crimes and misdemeanors" over the following allegations:

* That he failed to preserve IRS records in accordance with a congressional subpoena; the resolution notes the IRS erased hundreds of backup tapes containing potentially thousands of emails from Lois Lerner, the former official at the heart of the controversy.

*That he made "false and misleading statements" to Congress, including claiming "nothing" had been "lost" or "destroyed."

* That he did not notify Congress of missing emails until June 2014, despite allegedly being aware earlier.

13 (a) It's important to impeach these people. They are not our bosses.

(b) He's not a "civil servant," he's a lawyer. And as I'm constantly told, lawyers can make bazillions of dollars out in the private sector which is why we have to pay them so much in the government.

As a lawyer, he should be held to a much higher standard.

(c) Let the Democrats be the party of the IRS. That's some "negative" pub the GOP can take on.

(d) So I think somebody in the GOP finally got the memo that they should do things to please the base, even if those things only result in theater. Theater's fine. Our president's a (rodeo) clown anyway.

14 I know we will get a lot of eyeores on this thread but remember, we have been raising hell because they haven't. Now they have and even if it doesn't make it through the Senate it will highlight Obama's and the IRS's illegal activities in a manner that the MFM can not ignore. So the LIVs who only look at the alphabets will finally get their eyes opened.

It's about time. I don't care what shit the Senate pulls, this is a necessary move and it is the right thing to do - the only right thing to do. And there need to be more impeachments of Barky's junta, all the way to the top of that shit heap.

Shrillary is no longer in office so she needs to be immediately indicted and criminally prosecuted, and those unwilling to do this in the feral government need to be impeached and taken out of their positions.

39 I thought liberals were against the corruption inherent in monopolies. But government is a monopoly. We can't shop around somewhere else for a better IRS. And worse yet, you can do without a monopoly (and perhaps at great discomfort to yourself) but you can't do without the IRS because ... well.

So again, liberals claim they believe in some principle (monopolies = evil) and then create and worship a nightmarish version of the thing they claim to be against.

I just hate them so much.

Its like the Benghazi thing, where NO ONE was punished in any way... because a 'Board' of unelected Officials decided they should not be... and Hillary then used that for cover...

Its like the VA scandals where NO ONE is being fired... even though Vets are dying.

Or the fact that NO ONE was responsible in any way for 9/11...

Or the little Toxic waste spill from the Mine a few months back, which polluted the rivers of many States... yet no one has lost their damn job...

87 Accountability is for us little people. Our Political Overlords and Masters don't need to worry about things like this (as long as there is a D in their party affiliation or they are working to further the aims of the D party).

This is what bothers me the most about the fantasy land libs live in. It's not results but intentions (and we all know what paved the road to hell). Plus with this lot it isn't even their intention to do good, their intention is to further their agenda and as long as the media spins public opinion in the right way to many of the masses won't really notice or exercise critical thinking skills they never learned thanks to a public education.

Well, that and the fact that laws don't apply to them because their cause is holy and just. Which is all kinds of funny considering that they accuse the right of being blinded by religion. How's being blinded by ideology any different?

Your Hugh Hewitt update: the House budget thing is not a big thing, "it's not the end of the world". Followed by rambling illogical non sequitir exercise (bad even by GOP apologist standards) ... something something .... "the end of the world is Hillary as president".

We need to "get us out of the Obama era". You see, surrendering, pre-emptively, the main power of Congress, this is a brilliant tactic to "get us out of the Obama era". Because a guy like Obama, esp. as a lame duck, isn't likely to, you know, do anything objectionable. For which Congress's main constitutional leverage -control of $$$$$ -might be a useful tool.

Been saying it all day. If this thing includes actual appropriations, and actual, OMG, 2 YEAR! CR ...... then I am speechless. This will outdo any/all of the serial GOP failures/betrayals/screw-ups of the last 6 years. By a long shot.

Look, Lois Lerner, a federal employee, took the 5th and refused to testify before congress. However, Obama justice department "investigated" and found she had broken no laws.

Well, then, if she didn't do anything wrong, then she couldn't incriminate herself, and could not invoke the 5th, and she simply refused to testify before congress. So...she was in contempt of congress. That has already been voted on.
She can be arrested by the Sargent at arms, brought to the floor of the chamber, and subjected to punishment. Presidential pardons don't work, because it is not an offense against the United States, but against congress. This does not require any concurrence or agreement from the Justice Department.

ANY federal employee that invokes the 5th in front of congress deserves to either be in jail for criminal behavior, or in jail for refusing to answer questions.

Funny I think its Krauthammer but when I checked Krauthamer the suggestion was sauerkraut so I am leaving it.

199 Think of how remote the idea of the IRS targeting you personally is, for the majority of the voting public.

First, there is that huge class of voters that pay no federal taxes at all.

Then comes the class of actual federal tax payers, who do not itemize deductions.

You are left with a pretty small slice, and at least a third of those are leftist motherfuckers.

So how could you even gin up any public opinion, one way or the other, on whether it is OK for the IRS to target an individual or an organization because of whatever political beliefs they might hold, no matter what party might be in the White House.

How might the questions be phrased?

"If it had been known that in 2006, with President George W. Bush as President, the IRS was used as a weapon to target and disable Democrats and Democrat organizations from acting in opposition to Mr Bush's policies and initiatives, would you have opposed such weaponizing of the IRS?"

"And now let's turn this around. If it had been known that six years later, in 2012, with President Barack Obama in the White House and seeking a second term, that the IRS specifically targeted Republican groups and Repubican individuals, to harass and dispel them from acting in opposition to Mr Obama, would you have opposed such weaponizing of the IRS?"

... and by 'you' we mean 'your money'.

Studies show that donating money is a healthy practice and may actually cure cancer.

Your donation of 1000,10,000 or 100,000 dollars will go a long way toward stopping these new faces of evil.

Sincerely,

I get what you're saying but those aren't 3 distinct groups. You can have someone who itemizes a ton and because of all the deductions pays no income tax. And you can also have someone with no itemized deductions who pays a ton of income tax.

Everyone hates the IRS because everyone has to deal with it in some fashion and it's never pleasant. Even if you pay no net tax, it's still a pain in the ass to get taxes done.

288 If the GOPe had a pair they would have started impeachment proceedings on Holder.

289 I knew they had a deal when last week they breathlessly announced there was no deal on the deal ceiling and Treasury was delaying a 2-yr T-note auction on Nov. 2. That was just setting up the Kabuki for the deal they had just cut in secret.

About shifting IOUs around. SS is split into two separate things with two separate "trust funds", the regular old-age benefits and the disability part. The disability part has gone cash negative and is rapidly drawing down the IOUs. By law, once the trust fund is exhausted, benefits must be cut to match taxes coming in.

They can't allow that disaster of cuts, so they just shift things around at the expense of the old age part. That will move it's detonation closer, but buys them a few more years. It's all fiction on paper anyway.

A modern day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today's John Koskinen
Mean, mean pride

Though his mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day's events

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide

Today's John Koskinen
He gets high on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you

No his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit (

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

Exit the warrior
Today's John Koskinen
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

376 The guy that towed me out took my brand new Jeep, less than 1000 miles, out to test it and said it shows no damage. I'm getting rid of that POS car.

Um, just don't be in to much of a haste to sell. Consult Edmunds.com for resell value.

383 351 Just went into the comments at Red State for the first time.
Very creepy and cult-ish.

That is in fact the creepiest forum on the web. This turd Leon Wolf, who regrettably has been quoted here recently, presides at RS and delights in banning heretics--like you. Save yourself the trouble. Don't go back.

I could be satisfied with a single issue being addressed and thoroughly corrected.

Then on to the next one.

Better to finish repairs one at a time.

391 After spending a thousand dollars for every person on the fucking planet (8 trillion/8 billion, thas right math dammit) over the next two years, the House R critters said to themselves "we better throw the rubes a bone."

And boy is it an ugly one. But the second I heard impeach, I said out loud "They'll never convict him in the Senate."

Because the rule of law has completely broken down, as long as you are a Dem.

I don't know where you live, but driving around here is just getting downright dangerous. I suspect cellphones and texting to be the primary culprit, but there are a lot of dui drivers here and there were many, many motorcycle fatalities this summer. Fatalities are up in the state overall.

395 The need to add an impeachment of Atty Gen Lynch for gross neglect of duty and abetting after the fact, in refusing to prosecute obvious criminality going to the heart of the democratic process and the rule of law.

Otherwise its another "who knew what when" thing, as opposed to connecting the dots for the public.

And by the way, isn't money laundering and charity fraud still a crime? I think the Benghazi committee squandered an opportunity to see the big picture, and make the case to the public for Her Neatness being essentially a career criminal. Instead, we got "who was in charge of security!!" by the overrated and overheated Gowdy (a first rate prosecutor with a third rate ear for the electorate). I don't care if their brief was limited to Benghazi, they could and should have beat the drum about her "credibility" and followed quid pro quo lines of questioning about her actions as Sec of State (relating to loss of emails etc that were properly subpoenaed, and which she had a duty to preserve even absent subpoena).

But no, they go after mid level dealers and the small picture. Bug or feature?

402 Bold prediction - it won't make it out of the House Judiciary Committee. It likely won't even make it out of whatever subcommittee it heads to.

Posted by: steveegg at October 27, 2015 11:38 PM (cL79m)

403 Oh the initiative of Congressional Republicans on incompetently pursued manufactured scandals: just as one backfires, two more get jumped up into place.

The Planned Parenthood witchhunt has the potential of being as bad or worse a disaster than the 11 hour Hillary Aid show. Not only will it result in mobilizing hundreds of thousands to millions more women against the Republican party IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION YEAR, but it's a perfect tie-in the the Dems' selling feature of electing the first woman POTUS. Nice work, GOP.

The idea of impeaching the IRS Mister Magoo at least superficially seems less likely to cause actual harm, being grounded in the lack sympathy for anything to do with tax collection. But it could actually prove worse for the GOP, because it's so easily derailed. First off, Jason Chaffetz couldn't lead himself out of his loafers. Remember, he's the supposedly Great College Place Kicker who couldn't even survive 5 seconds in a leg wrestling match with Colbert - twice! It's possible there's no actually Greater Putz in Congress; he makes the craven & ridiculous Issa look like Solon. But even if the thing somehow survives an ignominious death at the committee stage at the feckless feet of Putzie Chaffetz and his band of screw-ups, it's still got to survive a gauntlet of court challenges (which it can't). And that's the BEST case scenario, because it'll never even get taken up in the Senate.
