New Star Wars Trailer Stirs Nostalgia, Racial Grievance
Looks pretty good. (Also, embedded below.)
The racial grievance angle is white racial grievance, with some neoconfenderates allegedly rankled to see a black stormtrooper. Now, if you remember, there was previously a nontroversy about this. Sean Davis came on the podcast a long while back to note that the left was screaming that "conservatives" were in a tizzy over seeing a black man in a stormtrooper outfit. (What, you're saying a black man can't be an imperial stormtrooper? Wake up, kid, times have changed: it's a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.) But Davis couldn't actually find people complaining of a black stormtrooper. What he found was liberals postulating that the conservatives who exist in their imaginations should be upset by the Black Stormtrooper, and then denouncing such imagined upset; but he couldn't find any actual conservatives bothered by this. But maybe racial grievance technology has improved since then, because World Net Daily says they've found the white supremacist bots you're looking for.
Um, whatever. I think ABC/Disney should be boycotted on other political grounds, but not on this. Even if you're a stickler for "canon," remember, this is not the "Empire," this is the Imperial Remnant. The Empire was blown up at the end of the last real Star Wars movie. Some Imperial hold-outs are rebuilding an Empire, but it's not the same Empire. So it's wrong to conclude that all the stormtroopers must still be clones. Maybe they were all liberated, and maybe the Imperial Remnant is just recuiting non-clones. By the way, we don't even know the stormtroopers where (white) clones by the time of the real Star Wars movies. That was never even hinted at (as George Lucas hadn't made up this stupid idea yet). Maybe the stormtroopers were clones in the stupid prequels, but by the time of the original series, most clones had retired and had been replaced by normal non-clone recruits. Personally, I think this whole "clone" business is stupid, and I ignore it (as I ignore all the prequels), and I'm happy that J.J. Abrams is ignoring this nonsense as well. Now, is this latest nontroversy real? Remember, the last one wasn't real -- just a lot of hot air from liberals preening and virtue-signaling. Well, looking at this alleged #BoycottStarWarsVII hashtag, I see zero actual outrage at black stormtrooper, but lots of outrage that someone else was allegedly outraged. Jim Treacher and Jon Gabriel suspect this is all a put-on by 4chan, doing some low-investment, high rate-of-return trolling:

occurs to me to go see a movie. Although I almost saw a movie this
summer. Some kid's movie and it was Tuesday Ticket for a dollar if you
went to the 10 am show. So I went with daughter and all the grands. We
took two cars, because we knew one or the other of them would not be
able to make it through the whole show. The two year old never even made
it through the previews. Why do they have 15 minutes of previews? If I
had known that, we would have come at 10:15. Poor kid was all
berjibbity before the show ever started. So we went to feed the ducks
instead.

In the actors' defense, if you watch the behind the scenes footage, Lucas used more CGI and green screens for that movie than Cameron used in Avatar. Every scene was two people standing in a blue room talking to each other (at best). It's really hard to act well when you don't have any physical cues.

Some non-canon books (since now no books are canon) said that the original cloners couldn't keep up with production/high quality clones no longer needed (to explain why "storm troopers were so easy to kill)/regular humans enlisted in the Empire/Clones no longer needed etc.
Why do they have to bring politics into eye-candy sci-fi. If the story is good, you'll identify with the protagonist anyway.
I'm just figuring Luke Skywalker is going to get killed off, as every Jedi Mentor (Qui Gon, Obi Wan) are killed off in the first episode of the trilogy.

no we don't know that. the original series is 17 years after the stupid clone movie crap. Some stormtroopers might be clones still, but many will have retired.
Also, you can visibly see that some are taller than others, and that Jengo Fett guy's voice was not the voice of the real stormtroopers (who had different voices).
So... to limit this clone nonsense in my mind, i'm saying that 90% of all stormtroopers were not clones in the original series.
Actually I'm saying 100% weren't, because I ignore every claim made in the prequels.

Even in the old republic, Jedi were rare. They just didn't seem that way because the story focuses on them. Most people would go their lives without ever meeting one. And that's some 60 years prior to Ep 7. It isn't that much of a stretch for the prevailing opinion to be that "well they existed, but the stories about them are generally blown out of proportion."

So... to limit this clone nonsense in my mind, i'm saying that 90% of all stormtroopers were not clones in the original series.

That was in a lot of that in the books. Although in Star Wars, there is a line about Obi Wan serving in the Clone wars, its never explained/expanded upon. And no one said the troopers where clones.

I remembered that from the movie and like someone else said above, it sounded really cool but Lucas ended up making it pretty dumb.
The whole "clones vs. droids" seemed to me a way to have a nice sterile war without any actual people dying and consequently gave the viewer no emotional attachment nor any reason to care about either side.

1 Luke's plan to rescue Han from Jaaba makes no sense but they try to make it seem really clever. First Lando infiltrates as a guard. Then Luke gives Jabba the droids. Then Chewie's gonna get captured. Then Leia's gonna try to rescue Han (with Chewie in captivity) and get captured. Then Luke is going to browbeat Jabba, kill the rancor, and get sent to the Sarlac
2 Another Death Star is not a good plot device. It's lazy especially when the battle on Hoth was so creative and distinctive from what had come before. The repetition is annoying.
3 As mentioned above Luke's story is ultimately irrelevant to the resolution of the plot.
4 Ewoks. Too clumsy to be credible. Too commercially crass. Nuff said.
5 A victory without cost. That's a terrible message. The original outline of the plot had Han dying, Luke riding off into the sunset to rebuild the Jedi, and Leia being left alone to restore freedom. I think bittersweetness would have been preferable to a Teddy Bear picnic. And no, the death of Vader (the 2nd worst war criminal in Galactic history) doesn't fit that because he wasn't a hero until the very end.
Those are the complaints off the top of my head.

The shield didn't collapse until after the Emperor was dead. The Executor wasn't destroyed until after the Emperor was dead. The rebels were also suffering heavy casualties.
I'll also say that without Luke, the Shield generator wouldn't have been brought down and the ewoks would know what deep fried Wookiee tastes like.

The Star Wars franchise lost me with the abomination that is Episode I.
It bothers me greatly that we Americans are so totally fixated on who is aggrieved about which real or imagined slight based on race.
I don't care what race people are, who their parents are, etc.

Luke's story on the Death Star was ultimately pointless, not what he did on Endor. Unless you think the Emperor had "Battle Meditation" and could control the course of the battle with his thoughts, what was going on in his throne room had nothing to do with the battle in space or on the planet. Once his fleet was obliterated, how would the Emperor have escaped in his defenseless shuttle now that the rebels had air supremacy?

Anyway, about that trailer: Looks good. All the trailers have looked good.
Which is why it's going to really hurt to boycott it (as I will). But
again, not for this stupid reason; just because ABC/Disney/Marvel/ESPN
is a very obnoxious and powerful leftist propaganda outfit.
I dunno, at this point my only interest in new Star Wars content is seeing what the Red Letter Media guys do with it. Based on my (limited) experience with Abrams work, it will be very middle of the road: competent (unlike the prequels), but thoroughly unremarkable and forgettable. Which is unfortunate, because I would have a lot more fun complaining about another embarrassing, incompetent Star Wars movie than watching a "good enough" Star Wars movie. The visuals in the trailers look pretty, but from what little of the story they give us, it sounds like it's just red sword guys making trouble again, and needing to be stopped by blue sword guys.
There's been almost 40 years of prolifically produced creative content using the Star Wars license across pretty much every medium of entertainment, and the original trilogy is still the only part of it that is of noteworthy quality. Not terribly confident about Abrams changing that.

There's a lot of crazy people out there, granted, but I'm a put my money on this not being a guy who exists. And if he does, he's what the social justice kids might call neuro-atypical.
Incidentally, the Empire were modeled after the Nazis, so you could make the artistic argument that there's a reason for them not to be a multicultural hodgepodge coalition. The Red Letter Media guys made an interesting point about the Aliens franchise, which I think is applies here. They noted that all the cool things the aliens do were surprises in the first movie, and that's a big part of what made them cool. The sequels just iterate on those cool ideas, maybe in different contexts, but they aren't surprises at that point, they're just things that you remember liking. The really compelling stuff is novel and surprising creativity, but once a franchise has done that, you've bought in, in your mind, that you like the franchise. So they can keep pumping out sequels that imitate those superficial elements of the franchise, but don't bother with the innovation and novelty. Which, to me at least, explains the bad sequel phenomenon.

The most popular movie franchise in history is now required to have a black guy and a woman as the main heroes because liberals hate white men. They are racists and sexists. Period.
