The Debate Upshot: The Democrat Party is Now Openly Socialist

Good round-up by Jim Geraghty.

I disagree with him on three points:

I don't think Hillary appeared particularly well-informed or polished. She appeared well-informed and polished compared to Lincoln Chafee, who seems to be a mental defective.

But her answers were all either canned stuff barely responsive to the questions, or incoherence. For example, she tried to explain away here 2003 Iraq belligerency by saying she had made a mistake and had evolved... and now takes the belligerent side of the issue on Libya and Syria. "Look, I learned my lesson on Iraq -- that's why I want a no-fly zone challenging Russian jets in Syria, ASAP."

I could see why people on the left like Bernie Sanders. Unlike Hillary Clinton, he seems to actually listen to questions and he attempts to respond to them. He appears sort of vaguely human.

One surprise to me is just how weak and fake Martin O'Malley is. Martin O'Malley had twenty memorized answers, and he was determined to offer them whether they were responsive to questions or not. Given that they were pre-memorized canned statements, you'd think they might be good, if non-responsive. In fact they were all forgettable.

I expect Jim Webb to move into 3rd place based on the fact that he was chasing an small, but completely ignored, demographic in the Democrat party -- the white non-gentry liberal vote. Most whites in the Democrat party are gentry liberals, but not all of them. They finally heard from someone who might make sense to them.

That doesn't mean I think Jim Webb will catch fire or win the nomination. But I think he'll get that 5% of the Democrat Party that isn't socialist or identity-politics fixated.

Anderson Cooper was a terrible moderator, adding nothing at all to the debate except interruptions. His principle role seemed to be insisting that a candidate shut up so that Hillary Clinton could respond to a mention of her.

He also protected her from the no-win Kobyashi Maru "do all lives matter" question -- Bernie Sanders was forced to take a position here, whether all lives matter, or only black lives matter. Because he took the previous position earlier and has been stage-rushed by #BLM activists ever since, this time he tried to mend fences and he said that only Black Lives Matter.

That would obviously be a soundbite that could hurt him badly in the general with people who are not black but who have this crazy idea that their lives matter, too.

Anderson Cooper not only didn't make Hillary answer that question, he actually changed the question's wording when he came to her so that she didn't even have to avoid the no-win scenario -- he turned off the no-win scenario just for Queen Hillary.

Bernie Sanders protected Hillary from her email problems, too. It's questionable, as Drew said, whether he actually is running for president either.

As Dave from Texas said, it felt like a beauty pageant in which everyone on the stage, including the judges, seemed to want to put the tiara on just one princess's head.

The entire Democrat field, and CNN, is determined that Hillary is The New One, and this is all a bit of a kabuki and all a bit of a coronation.

Jim Webb: My Enemies are the Enemies of the United States. Jim Webb's answer about which "enemy" he was the proudest to have made was interesting -- he named an actual enemy, not a mere political rival.

And he killed the enemy in question.

The feminized men of the left are all aghast at this. For example:

Read The Federalist to hear why Jim Webb is proud about making this enemy.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to First Lieutenant James H. Webb, Jr. (MCSN: 0-106180), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam.

On 10 July 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb’s platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex which appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers. Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade which detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel.

Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search which yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data.

Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade. Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body. Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

So this is creepy. But meanwhile, Bernie Sanders, who was a conscientious objector during Vietnam but who now says "I'm no pacifist" -- meaning he lied when he got his conscientious objector status, or he's lying now -- is just swell.

Elite socialist cadre will inform privately owned businesses what they can produce, how much they can produce, set prices, and tell them who they can sell to -- and take a huge cut for being so helpful. Most strategic businesses (energy, transportation, etc.) are government owned. (Russia)
Communism - Does the same as Socialism, but adds in running individuals' private and political lives as well -- telling them which political parties they can belong to (one only), how many kids they can have, what religions they can practice (none), etc. (China, North Korea)

Communism took the idea and expanded it to involve government control over all aspects of your life. Everyone is to be made as equal as possible in every aspect of their lives.

Socialism is a midpoint between capitalism and communism. That is from the people who invented communism. The MFM likes to call communists socialist to soften the impact after the Russians made communism a bad name.

The US is a socialist country because more than 50% of the economy is government handouts. Under communism the government owns all the businesses. They effectively control them here now which is closer to Fascism which is just another form of socialism.

Just need a candidate on our side who could differentiate clearly the difference between socialism and capitalism. 269 As for the difference between socialism and communism:

A socialist thinks people can be persuaded, rationally, to give up all private property and allow the government to share any gains from their labor with lazy parasites.

A communist knows that people cannot be persuaded of this nonviolently, and so use extreme force to impose universal "equality" on everything; those who cannot be "broken" by violence or torture are summarily killed, until there is no opposition.

Biden gets in if and only if Obama makes it happen.

And in that case, it doesn't matter how late it is. The money guys, even if they love Bernie's policies, know he's a doddering old fool and a lot less compliant than Biden would be.

Biden plays the game. They'll take him in a second. They also think his ambush of Paul Ryan was a debate "win" and would replicate itself. By the third debate, Biden's schtick is worn thin.

296 In summary, for last night, nothing has really changed, except maybe for Joe Biden and Barack Obama laughing their asses off...

1. Jim Webb, the representative of non-urban White Democrats, was there as a token. He got the Two Minutes Hate, and he will gain no traction. Kind of sad, but he is the last banner-bearer of the pre-1968 Democrat Party.

2. Lincoln Chaffee was there to make the Hildabeast look good. He succeeded.

3. Bernie Sanders did well, which ought to make us all worry. But he pulled his punches on the Hildabeast, which will not help him in the long run. Is he expecting gratitude from her? His understudy didn't do very well.

4. The Hildabeast as usual got a lot of accolades and deference she didn't deserve. Everyone there ran away from the email controversy as Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy material. But she threw down a gauntlet to the Republicans, and she dodged hard questions whenever possible. So she is still not inevitable.

297 Although according to (puts on hazmat suit) "Marxist theory" (takes off suit) socialism is merely the halfway transitional stage to communism.

Talk to any actual communist (and I'm spoken to hundreds of them throughout my life) and they inevitably will tell you that communism "has never been tried" because all the states we have falsely labelled "communist" throughout history have in fact been socialist states, who either fizzled and never graduated to full-on communism, or who are still in the process of getting there.

They still think that once your cross that threshhold from socialism to pure communism, all dissent, all poverty, all arguments, all problems will instantly dissolve and disappear and perfect utopia will obtain.

And the only thing preventing this from happening is "capitalism" (a totally made-up word inverted by [puts on hazmat suit] Karl Marx [takes off suit] to describe any naturally occurring economic system), embodied by the United States.

320 Interesting factoid. Chilean President Salvador Allende was a socialist, not a communist, before Pinochet and the military put an end to his version of Hope and Change. The communists were allies in his coalition govt. and, counter-intuitively, constantly urged him to slow down the the nationalizations and seizures and proceed more cautiously. Of course, he ignored this advice, wrecked the Chilean economy in the process and was, thankfully, killed in a coup that restored sanity and was overwhelmingly supported by Chileans, (despite the narrative the left has managed to create)

So remember everybody, socialists aren't AT ALL like communists, even if communists frequently call themselves socialists.

323 Communism is Stalin and Mao. Socialism is Volvos and European hipster guys with pony tails.

No. Look, the scandis are not socialist. They have a massive welfare state, but they are happy parasites on capitalism.

"Socialism" is just hippie-dippie commune thinking. That we don't have to do communism full-on with the killing and such, we just have to do this other thing.

And let's face it, everybody except the super-greedy super-rich all want the same things, right? So we'll just put well-intentioned and brilliant people in charge (like Bernie) who have no bad human traits like greed or desire for domination because those are just results of greedy capitalism.

People are basically good, donchaknow?

Here's the thing, and Sweden is showing it: If you have a racial minority underclass, they have no guilt about receiving welfare or being indigent. Social Justice demands it. As those minorities get bigger, your welfare state is unsustainable.

That's why all of Bernie's examples are Scandanavia and not South America, where they have actual socialism. And empty shelves.

336 >> Volvo was bought by Ford and Saab was bought by GM and
>> both of the brands were destroyed after the sale.

Ford went through something of an acquisition spree, they bought Jaguar, then hired an Anglophile former BMW exec who'd been shown the door after his UK acquisitions proved more troublesome than the Quandt family had expected. He then bought Land Rover off of BMW, and Volvo (which squashed an embryonic effort at actually elevating Lincoln to a premium nameplate), but when all of this proved to require capital Ford didn't have they also canned him and he went off to run a German industrial-gas outfit.

Land Rover got sold off to the Indians, and Volvo got sold off to the Chinese, and Lincoln reverted to being a bedpan joke. Ford management at the time was insufficiently ruthless in combining Jag and Land Rover and bringing the unions to heel, and current Mulally-era Ford is not interested in the capital investment needed to run a high-end brand.

GM bought a chunk of Saab a long time ago, bought a little more and took effective ownership in '91-92. GM was doing a lot of stupid things at this point, they spun up Saturn and then starved it for capital investment and new product, and the story with Saab was the same. Some Chinese outfit bought up the bones.

It took another decade before GM began to realize the kind of investment and the kind of effort needed to compete in the upper half of the market, much of the current Cadillac line is actually competitive here now (somethng you can't say about any Lincoln product) but they're still struggling in Europe all across the line.

Commies - barring, e.g., Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht - are usually pretty good at sniffing the wind, and in Chile realized that Allende was risking everything by proceeding too quickly. Bull. Look, Biden can't win the nomination without Obama's support.

Hillary will not be damaged without an indictment.

Biden gets in if and only if Obama makes it happen.

Biden plays the game. They'll take him in a second. They also think

By the third debate, Biden's schtick is worn thin.

For starters, what the Morning Joe crew knows about political and military tactics could be written on a 3x5 card and still leave room for everyone's coffee order from Starbucks.

but I agree with our amish dude that Obummer can end Shrillary as a serious candidate. Biden is an old kook, yeah, but as said above, he plays the game, and knows when to stop with the demagoguery. Sanders is a True Believer, so he has no hope of success. None of the others can hope to reach the Convention as a candidate, let alone the nominee. And as for Shrillary, she has too much baggage, and Obummer hates her and Bill. I am thinking that Obummer has gotten the advice to hold his hand until early next year, and then drop the legal hammer so it dominates the news cycle. Shrillary will spend all of Iowa and New Hampshire refuting it. If she gets in a hissy fit and turns on The Obamessiah, she is done. Biden will laugh all the way to the Convention.

386 Sweden has been sitting pretty on cheap hydro energy, like Iceland sits
on geothermal. Plus, like most euroweenie countries, they have low to no
defense expenditures, correct? Plus, for most of their history, their
population has been homogeneous, stable, and resident.

Sweden used to be basically one large extended family, of which Iceland is the extreme example. Socialism works within a family, as all the members have blood ties to each other, and can kinda work in a homogeneous nation, whose members have weaker but still existent blood ties to each other.

But when that's no longer true, and there are no blood ties, the natural human temptation is to go "us, them," viz., for one group to take advantage of the other, and the other to resent it. The U.S. used to get around this problem through the melting pot, inculcating citizens in their identity as Americans, rather than as members of a tribe.

But now we have destroyed the melting pot, and have rampant tribalism that guarantees friction between groups jockeying for advantage. Yay diversity!

that's deeply and disturbingly true

this is all orchestrated -- I've talked to EU and UN officials who are quite open about their intentions

the goal is to make nation-states look like small provincial towns, to force international and inter-racial mixing, to obliterate borders, and to govern it all at the global level

at this someone can shout "tinfoil!" all they want, and for whatever reason, but this is the reality

not everyone is a Grand Schemer like this, but some are, and they're using the disconnected impulses in everyone else to make things bend toward global governance and plutocracy

The Russians have an air force. And they have tactical doctrines and weapons _specifically designed_ to pick off tankers (and AWACS and such) at very long distances.

They're not even going for tiny houses really, more like everybody cheek
to jowl in apartments, which you don't own yet pay for. And there fore
have no equity or money to pass on to your descendants.

Except for the elite, who will have their mansions.

Seriously, all they're building is apartment complexes, no starter
homes. I don't mean a big house, even just a 2 bedroom that you move out
of as your family grows. Everything in my area is either 300K+ houses
that are huge, yet on tiny plots of land, or enormous apartment
complexes in every nook and cranny they can be fit.
--------------
This is true, the 2-bedroom "starter house" is an antique. Unless one means "townhouse" or "condominium", which of course is not the same thing! But I agree, current 'burbs construction is one of three things:
1. Homearama mansions for the elites who can use the mortgage as equity and tax soak.
2. McMansions for wanna-be elites who like treading financial water until they are ready to retire.
3. Two-bedroom apartments with the same amount of room as a single-wide, stacked liked Pringles cans in little warrens with not enough parking spaces.

(Nobody pays attention to the micro-home communities around here though. No mirar y no escuchar mas, comprende amigos>

It is truly maddening to hear a zillionaire like Bloomberg tell me that I should get used to living in a crackerbox.

How many rooms do his home(s) have?

443 Water-saving has become a fanatical home economics devotion in Germany. Recently read a long form article about people who saved bathwater all week, who cried when they didn't have their buckets out during a rainstorm, etc. The Germans fetishized water conservation, which I guess isn't all that surprising.

444 I think every family home in Boston had a similar shrine to JFK at some point.

Damn near every mantle had a JFK and a Jesus.

Same was true in many Irish homes when I was a kid.

445 Herself said a month or so ago that companies that are forced to lay off workers should instead let them work part time and the gubmint would make up the difference in their pay checks.

That was before the emails we're not going to talk about anymore became a burden to her and when she was trying to be more of a Socialist than Ol' Bern.

446 If you tell them to fill the glass with ice - regardless of cost - they give you the "wasteful, econazi" look.

I recall that was true of Britain in the early '80's. I ordered a gin and tonic in a pub there once and it was room temp, with one little tiny ice cube floating around in it.

I don't know if it was about environmentalism at that time, though. The Euros seem to have some weird cultural distaste for cold beverages - probably because their climate is far more temperate than ours.

A Brit who had never been to the States asked me why we all blasted our AC in the summer. I said, "because it gets really hot, that's why, even in the northern states." I was there all summer and I don't think the temp got above 75 degrees even once.

451 Yeah but their mocking him specifically for recalling his service. That's uncalled for.

Mock him for forgetting his kids names? Yeah, sure.

But for saying "I got the better of the guy trying to kill me." No.

And if he hangs out with and provides moral support for, for a two decade period, the people who continually say that violence in the act of trying to save the S. Vietnamese from Soviet Servitude, including the fight he describes, was wrong?

452 "16
Shit!"

Please confine your usage of this punctuation to the Modern Manual standards, specifically, Hillary! and Jeb!

Thank you.
