Bombshell: McCarthy Drops Out Of Race For Speaker Of The House

Update [Ace]: Don't assume this is just about McCarthy's dumb statement. Yesterday, the Freedom Caucus announced they would be voting as a block for Daniel Webster. As the Freedom Caucus is 40 strong, this would have denied the 218 votes necessary for McCarthy (assuming Democrats didn't vote for him).

Oh, so Boehner is delaying the election. Note that there are two candidates remaining, Webster and Chaffetz, so the election could go forward -- but that would result in a non-Establishment winner, and they can't have that. Obviously.

Hot Air notes that Representative Walter Jones urged that no one tainted by scandal -- i.e., had any marital infidelities -- while serving as Congressman should run for the Speaker's chair. This isn't necessarily directed at McCarthy, or any of the other named candidates, but it does seem worth a mention.

Especially because he made the letter completely public. It's posted on the House website!

"Conventional Wisdom" takes a kick in the teeth again.

It was going to be a tough sell with Trey Gowdy giving him a rather nasty tongue lashing yesterday.

The GOP is pretty conflict averse, and nobody wants to take the top spot. I wonder if they'll draw lots like a Decimation.

It sounds as if people are overthinking things. Conservatives have been railing for years about the leadership and they have been increasing their numbers in the House. Boehner just barely got re-elected last time and was pretty much forced out. There just weren't the votes to elect one of his chief lieutenants to replace him.

Hopefully, conservatives won't act like the dog who chases cars and finally catches one and doesn't know what to do now.

Did his little foot-in-mouth incident the other day give a few of the GOP pause to wonder whether there's more of those to come as Speaker?

Did McCarthy conclude that he'd need Dem votes to win, and that'd leave him with a level of credibility approaching that of the Vichy French government?

So far as I can tell he's a decent guy, and maybe he's just not willing to embrace the by-any-means-necessary approach.

Two perspectives on the same thing:

SAS: Who dares, wins.
Woody Allen: 80% of life is just showing up.

217 France Train Hero Spencer Stone Stabbed, In 'Stable Condition'

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- CBS News has learned that France train hero Spencer Stone was stabbed early Thursday morning.

According to the Pentagon, who has confirmed Stone was injured, Spencer is in "stable condition."

"A1C Spencer Stone has been transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury. The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. He is currently in stable condition," a statement from the U.S. Air Force reads.

Initial reports listed Stone's condition as "critical."

According to CBS News, who first reported the story, Stone was stabbed repeatedly. The incident happened outside of a bar at 21st and K Streets, CBS News reports. Stone reportedly suffered a wound to the heart and his left lung.

The owner of a liquor store says he has video of the incident and it appears show five to six men in a group attacking someone in an intersection.

The Sacramento Police Department confirms that an assault occurred at the location in midtown just before 1 a.m. and are investigating. They would not say who was injured and a suspect has not been identified.

Police say the incident is "not related to a terrorist act." Alcohol looks to be a contributing factor.

The Republicans have gotten more conservative over the last 20 years and the Democrats have gotten more liberal. Each of the far ends of each party's caucus fight to drive the rest toward their direction.

Its why they don't negotiate worth crap. The only question after Boenher stepped down is, who do the conservatives want, cause in the end if they stick it out they will get who they want. Its not just numbers, but morale that matters in politics. The go along to get alongs don't really careTHAT much about anything but the paycheck.

309 >>And the concept that the Moderates could compromise with the rest of the Republican caucus is just completely off the table?

I did think about what I wrote. The Freedom Caucus in the House has 40 members. There are 246 Republican in total. You do the math.

Conservatives have been raising hell and got rid of Boehner and now blocked McCarthy because he couldn't get 218 votes needed. That's a good thing but it's not the same as actually passing something we want.

So you tell me all the conservative successes that you have seen come out of the House recently that gives you any confidence that those 40 members are going to get the other 206 to vote their way because they won't be getting any Dem votes for anything.

That mass shooting at the Oregon school last week by a Muslim sympathizer -- that school was attended by one of the other Americans who stopped the French train attack (he wasn't present at the school when the shootings happened because he was rehearsing for Dancing with the Stars).

Shultz, no surprise.

Recall that the Ivy League foreign policy mandarinate split into two camps during the Cold War years.

The left wing of the mandarinate were determined to surrender to the Soviets as quickly as possible.

The right wing of the mandarinate were determined to delay losing to the Soviets for as long as possible.

Shultz was in the latter bloc. In which capacity he argued against SDI in the Reagan administration's internal deliberations, calling SDI "destabilizing" and trying to kneecap the program at every opportunity.

Turns out SDI was in fact destabilizing. It destabilized the Kremlin regime to where that regime tottered and fell over. No thanks to George Shultz.

347 I'd be fine seeing the Congress put a RINO in as Speaker on one condition: That the House GOP and the Senate GOP pass a (non-binding) resolution asking the State legislatures to call a convention to amend the Constitution. They would agree on the language for proposed amendments up front (hopefully written in large part by Mark Levin) and include the language in the resolutions.

The primary argument people make against Art 5 conventions is that the wording of state legislature resolutions isn't identical and therefore they are invalid. This proposal would provide for identical resolutions.

Another argument you often hear is that an Art 5 convention, once started, might be unpredictable, and could generate additional, but bad in some way, amendments. By including the proposed amendments right in the resolution, this issue would also be addressed.

You want your crony capitalist RINO go along-get along Speaker? Fine, in return, give us a Constitutional convention.

388 Two interesting quotes out of that Lawrence Summer article:
Western bond markets are sending a strong signal that there is too little, rather than too much, outstanding government debt.....

The case for more expansionary fiscal policy is especially strong when it is spent on investment or maintenance. Wherever countries print their own currency and interest rates are constrained by the zero bound, there is a compelling case for fiscal expansion until demand accelerates to the point where interest rates can be raised.

And so, once again, we get the clarion call to go further and further into debt. He's concerned that we'll wind up like Japan, but expansionary debt is exactly what Japan tried.

trumpet once again you've put forward this absurd contention that "both" parties have become more radical the last few decades. Even semantic and definitional issues aside, this is clearly not the case.

The Dems have become literally unrecognizable since the early Clinton era. Harry Reid, just to take one histrionic example, was more "conservative" - a LOT more - than half of today's GOP Senate caucus, judging by the best apples-to-apples sorts of comparisons. He was a "western Democrat", a concept that is literally gone. When assembling majorities or even substantial minorities to cosponsor some effort or for vote head-counting, Reid was one Dem (there were many, western and southern) you didn't even waste time on him - you knew you'd have his vote. Automatic, on many issues.

I cannot think of a single major issue on which the elected GOP has become more "conservative" (I might be missing something, but I can't think of any). Not a one. (and cherry-picking some Packwood or Weicker or Presler vote from the 80s doesn't change anything - saying that left-wing Rep incumbents have disappeared is not the same thing as showing that the party has become more conservative in a substantive sense).

In any case this false framework of two parties both having become radicalized doesn't really affect any analysis of the situation today.

That might be to actually force the gopE to cross the aisle to get donktard support to get a gopEr elected SoH? Do you know what that would do to the repuke party?
Just because you don't have the numbers doesn't mean you don't have the power.
It's the HFC way or the highway. If the gopErs take the highway the repuke party is done.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at October 08, 2015 01:40 PM (OLNwX)

It's not wide open, they need 218 - they can't get that, but what they can do is stake a position, and force the caucus to tack to a more conservative position and mode of leadership.

That is what they are doing.

It's a similar tactic to shutting down the government reducing government operations to DC's ludicrous definition of "essential."

Were someone of the mind to "get things done" in the House, it would be relatively easy to do- convince the Establishment wing that they need the support of the Conservative wing, and stop siding with Democrats. The House is a simple majority chamber; they can literally tell Democrats to STFD and STFU, and Democrats can't do a thing about it.

The issue - and here I believe we agree - is that the Establishment would rather burn down the party, scatter the stones, and salt the earth where it stood than to caucus with the Conservative (or, if you prefer: "rejectionist") wing of the party.

I don't disagree with that but I think there is a second part that is equally important even if I don't agree with it. The establishment members, most of which have been there a lot longer, can say the exact same thing to the conservative caucus. In fact, they have. And the conservative caucus has repeatedly told them to pound sand which is why we are where we are.

I just don't see 206 members all of a sudden saying "Oh sure, we'll start doing things exactly the way you want after you have been trashing us, running against us and blaming us for everything for the last few years. Sure, why not?" to 40 members. I may be wrong, hope I am, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

that there is too little, rather than too much, outstanding government

The case for more expansionary fiscal policy is especially strong
when it is spent on investment or maintenance. Wherever countries print
their own currency and interest rates are constrained by the zero bound,
there is a compelling case for fiscal expansion until demand
accelerates to the point where interest rates can be raised.

And so, once again, we get the clarion call to go further and
further into debt. He's concerned that we'll wind up like Japan, but
expansionary debt is exactly what Japan tried.
