Neil DeGrasse Tyson went on a Reddit Ask Me Anything to answer questions about one of his many fields of expertise: art. Sure, why not. The toadying on display was vile, but this is the worst of it (I hope!!!):In the 13-minute video, Tyson answers some serious questions and some quirky ones (our favorite: "If you were going to be painted nude, but the background of the painting was on the surface of a planet of your choice, what planet would you choose and why?"), throwing a fair bit of scientific facts in for good measure. He isn't even a scientist. Hell, he's just an administrator. So the Democrats are running a drunk old criminal gang leader and the GOP wants to run a corporate middle manager, if one can manage to survive the primaries.
Drudge is right: what a fucking bore, on one level, and how tragic it seems on another, since it's kind of an insipid way to end Republican democracy. I sure do hope somebody emerges from the GOP side with some vision and personality! That's the one thing I really like about Trump, putting aside his mish-mash of soft-Democrat policy ideas. Cruz would "lose" to Biden because of style, not substance. Cruz would come across as niggling and overly precious about points. Biden would flash those big pearly whites, shrug helplessly, and appeal to the audience's willingness to believe he has a bigger heart and more experience than the yipping young senator at his heels.
Against Trump, Biden would play the Noble and Charming Senator of Long Experience, but he'd have a harder time because Trump knows this and would try to knock Biden off his smiling pedestal. Against a tornado of Here's What Your Shitty Eight Years Have Done, Biden would look like smiling denial. Trump would take the unions right out from under Biden, and Biden wouldn't know what hit him. The '75% of scientists agree' figure has been thoroughly debunked. They were not asked: the 'study' was an informal review of pre-selected articles which even then did not, upon real examination, appear to warrant anything remotely like scientific consensus, or even agreement on what the problem was. The real number is around 2%.

Granted Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a leftist blowhard, but you'll give yourself ulcers if you get irritated at every thing he or his acolytes do to burnish his image. The whole idea of Tyson getting himself painted in the nude with the background of a planet behind him is hysterical. It's like some weird modern version of a Rubens only with a heavy male model,, because I don''t think Tyson looks like a GQ model, does he?. They could title the work, "The Angry Planet" Did I say that I cannot see his name without associating him with an ancient TV series called DeGrassi Junion High and Tyson chickens, so I always laugh no matter whatever fatuous comments he comes up with. One of the main characters in Neal Stephenson's excellent sci fi book "Seveneves" is basically a fictionalized version of Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Four attempts by Russian-linked gangs in Moldova to sell nuclear material have been thwarted by the authorities and the FBI over the past five years, according to an Associated Press investigation.
The most recent case was in February when undercover agents were offered a large amount of radioactive caesium from a smuggler who specifically sought a buyer from Islamic State, the report said. The cases involved informants and an undercover police officer posing as a connected gangster complete with a Mercedes Benz provided by the FBI. Despite being arrested, the alleged kingpins got away with short prison sentences and in some cases have resumed nuclear smuggling, AP found. In all these zombie flicks and stories, has any of them ever considered the impact on animals on a sudden, dramatic reduction in human population? Generally, zombie lore states that they will eat anything living. In some canon, they go so far as to eat the bark off of trees.
Even in the campy '80's stuff like Return of the Living Dead the zombies still ate anything that had a brain. I can't really think of any lore where the zombies only ate humans, so exploring what would happen animal populations isn't all that fertile of ground. But there's also a lot of lazy writing in zombie lore. Posted by: Chupacabras at October 07, 2015 09:52 AM (F26eZ) 257

In what, rightly, should be called the "more jobs for lawyers" act, his highness (literally) Brown of The Imperial Mexican State of California signed the "landmark" fair pay act.
I am thoroughly convinced that the bulk of legislation in this country is made as part of a jobs program for lawyers. Who knew you would ever need a lawyer to avoid all of the penalties from not paying the taxes that you illegally failed to pay AND to pay less than you owe? Sounds like a racket, right? Or how about getting all of the benefits that you rightly deserve buy you probably won't until you hire a lawyer to get them for you because the law is too damned complicated for anyone to understand, but law firms just happen to have an inside track on under Social Security? What I hope happens with this law is that some unknown lesbian (because it would be salt in the wound) actress who gets a bit part in a movie in which some A lister actor gets a million bucks for a cameo and then she divides up her time on the screen that amounts to 10 times the minutes of the A listers cameo and she sues and gets ten times as much as the A lister. San Franciscos latest attempt to make landlords pay relocation costs for tenants they evict when the property owners go out of the rental business has hit another judicial roadblock. The ordinance, scaled down from a previous measure, would require landlords to pay displaced tenants the difference between their current rent and the market rate for a similar unit in the city for two years, up to a maximum of $50,000. But Superior Court Judge Ronald Quidachay said the required payments exceed the reasonable relocation assistance authorized by the Ellis Act, the state law that allows landlords to evict all their tenants when they leave the rental business without having to show any other grounds for an eviction. http://tinyurl.com/qgxt48m And that's the "scaled down" version. 277 Insomniac, know your history. The Papacy one time tried to outlaw the crossbow.
Posted by: Anna Puma at October 07, 2015 09:56 AM (QU7W6) I was unaware of this. I should've known those filthy Papists were longbow lovers! Posted by: Insomniac at October 07, 2015 09:58 AM (2Ojst) 286
Back from buying a Crystal in a parking lot, all went smoothly. Now to get a case for it and have it engraved by the 15th.

Sven, just ponder how the world would be different if Piedmont troops had not invaded the Papal States in 1870 during the Vatican Council.

Maybe I'm being slow, but I didn't even think about how close Hillary!'s "Like, with a cloth or something?" quote was to "Like, from the toilet?".

I figured that zombies would eat animals as well as humans, but animals can move faster and usually have keener senses than humans, so I'd assume that significant numbers would survive.
I'd also expect that the zombie populations would crash precipitately shortly after the outbreak when all the readily available food sources are eaten up. At some point I'd expect zombies to become just one part of the new ecosystem. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 07, 2015 10:00 AM (bZ7mE) 291

Frak. I think the Ewok's restfulness came by stealing my sleep cycle. I dreamt last night I couldn't get to sleep, with predictable results in the (actual) morning.

Never tried a Krystal burger, not really into "Sliders", but I'd give them a try if I see one. The closest Krystal Burger is 109 miles away, so I won't be passing one any time soon.

Well Sven, such is life. Apparently the dissenters on Papal infallibility were correct, 1870 was not the right time to push that idea.

Anna, I saw that after I posted what I posted.
Good site though. I am surprised they used the 1907 Dreyse pistol until the 80's I would have suspected that they carried one of the machine pistols like the Beretta or HK VP-70 Posted by: Kindltot at October 07, 2015 10:07 AM (3pRHP) 301

In all these zombie flicks and stories, has any of them ever considered the impact on animals on a sudden, dramatic reduction in human population? I don't mean just if animals become zombies, but questions like: do feral dog poipulations, the ones that survive the first year or two, eventually become quasi-dingos and/or mate with wolves and coyotes? Do we get neo-Longhorn cattle, elusive and aggressive wraiths of the brushlands?
The genres don't usually look that far down that road (but it's an interesting thought, what the world is like 100 years after the Zompacolypse). On TWD, we've seen packs of wild dogs. The survivors ate them. We've also seen horses eaten by zombies. On Z-Nation, one character adopted a sled dog, but the other sled dog went zombie. Z-Nation is tacky but entertaining. It's like if The Walking Dead were made by the studio that makes Sharknado; because that's what it literally is. Posted by: V the K at October 07, 2015 10:10 AM (O7MnT) 304
