Quote of the Day I

Abstract: In this paper, I take the position that a large portion of contemporary academic work is an appalling waste of human intelligence that cannot be justified under any mainstream normative ethics. Part I builds a four-step argument for why this is the case, while Part II responds to arguments for the contrary position offered in Cass Sunstein's "In Defense of Law Reviews." First, in Part I(A), I make the case that there is a large crisis of suffering in the world today. (Part I does not take me very long.). In Part I(B), I assess various theories of "the role of the intellectual," concluding that the only role for the intellectual is for the intellectual to cease to exist. In Part I(C), I assess the contemporary state of the academy, showing that, contrary to the theory advanced in Part I(B), many intellectuals insist on continuing to exist. In Part I(D), I propose a new path forward, whereby present-day intellectuals take on a useful social function by spreading truths that help to alleviate the crisis of suffering outlined in Part I(A).

-- Nathan J Robinson in the best academic abstract ever, 'Can Philosophy Be Justified in a Time of Crisis?'

Quote of the Day II

Let's take Malcolm Turnbull at his word that it's only "a very very small percentage of violent extremist individuals". What is the actual percentage? In the aforementioned Malmö, where up to a thousand mostly young male "refugees" arrive each day, suppose the "very very small percentage" is two per cent. That's 20 brand new "violent extremists" per day. During the Northern Irish "Troubles", MI5 estimated that there were no more than a hundred active members of the IRA at any one time - that's to say, people actively involved in shooting and killing. So Malmö is taking in the equivalent of the entire IRA every week.

-- Mark Steyn

Quote of the Day III

So it is with this president. It's not enough for him to stake and defend his positions. He wants you to know that he thinks deeper, sees further, knows better, operates from a purer motive. His preferred method for dealing with disagreement is denigration. If Republicans want a tougher line in Syria, they're warmongers. If Hillary Clinton thinks a no-fly zone is a good idea, she's playing politics: "There is obviously a difference," the president tut-tutted about his former secretary of state's position, "between running for president and being president."

You can interpret that jab as a sign Mr. Obama is urging Joe Biden to run. It's also a reminder that Mr. Obama believes his Syria policy - the one that did nothing as 250,000 people were murdered; the one that did nothing as his own red lines were crossed; the one that allowed ISIS to flourish; the one that has created the greatest refugee crisis of the 21st century; the one currently being exploited by Russia and Iran for geopolitical advantage - is a success.

That's because the president's fundamental conviction about American foreign policy is that we need less of it-less commitment, less expense, less responsibility. Winston Churchill once said that the U.S. could not be "the leading community in the civilized world without being involved in its problems, without being convulsed by its agonies and inspired by its causes." Mr. Obama sees it differently. He is the president who would prefer not to. He is the Bartleby of 21st century geopolitics.

-- Brett Stephens

Quote of the Day IV

Finally, with Obama's retreat from the region, there is no global rival backing the Sunni opposition. The Afghan mujahideen were going nowhere until the United States started arming them with Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and other advanced weaponry; Saudi Arabia can play the role that Pakistan played in the 1980s and 1990s, but if America won't play any part at all, the Soviets aren't likely to pay a price. The Russians' Afghan quagmire was, to a substantial degree, made in America - by Ronald Reagan.

Russia is a crippled power; its people are older and die younger every year, its wealth comes largely from exporting fossil fuels, and its military - despite the investments Putin has made - is a pale shadow of the mighty Red Army. But even irreversible long-term trends don't make defeat inevitable now, or any time soon. Even if this is history repeating itself, it's worth remembering that it took a decade for Russia to call it quits in Afghanistan, a country that's never been the same since.

This quagmire consistency truly is a hobgoblin of Barack Obama's mind; he sees every war this way. He is content that there is an "arc" to history, one that inevitably "bends toward justice." Vladimir Putin, by contrast, believes in the "great man" theory of things, and he thinks himself to be one of those great men. Along with the Iranians, he's doing his best to bend things in his direction; he who dares wins.

-- Thomas Donnelly in He Who Dares Wins

Joe Biden Himself Leaked Word of His Son's Dying Wish For Him To Run For President

Biden has always been a casual, shameless liar when it came to anything that might give him even a momentary political advantage. And when on the rare occasion that he's been called on it, he always falls back on the 'I misspoke' excuse. But truthfully it is hard to deny that lying has in fact been very, very good to Joe Biden over the years.

Biden's "Uncle Joe" schtick is designed to camouflage the career politician inside who has no qualms about lying to further his own ambitions. You know, the man who plagiarized his law review comment and falsely claims that he played college football, graduated in the top half of his law school class (he was 76 out of 85), had a blue collar upbringing, that his first wife and daughter were killed by a drunk driver (there is no evidence the driver was drunk), and that he was a skeptic of the Iran nuclear deal.

Biden has displayed, over a long period of time, a near-pathological propensity to lie in order to aggrandize himself. That he would "embellish" the story of his dying son's last words-and plant the story himself with the New York Times-is just another example of this pattern.

The Libertarian $20 Bill That No One Seems To Want

Report: 1 in 5 Campus Rape Reports Are False

It turns out the "one-in-five number" is correct, but it's not the one-in-five the media are reporting. Harvard University released its sexual assault statistics as part of federal regulations, and it turns out 18.1 percent of reported rapes on campus are "unfounded," defined by Harvard police as "any report of a crime that is found to be false or baseless."

If this number is reported anywhere in the media that's so eager to report every faulty survey purporting to show 20 percent of women are sexually assaulted in college, you can bet they will add in all the caveats they leave out in reporting incidences of sexual assault.

And remember that these were just the cases that were so egregiously false that they were labeled as such.

Similarly, if the above news does come to pass, it will be awfully convenient of NBC-MSNBC-Comcast to bundle Olbermann, Brian Williams, Al Sharpton, and Chris Matthews together all on the same network as an entire Star Wars cantina-style channel full of "must flee TV."

How Societies Learn to Count to 10

Slowly then in bunches.

For some cultures, big numbers just don't make sense. Take the shepherd who knows that he has the right number of sheep not by counting them one by one but by grasping the gestalt of his flock. That may sound strange to people from other cultures, says Patience Epps, a linguist at the University of Texas, Austin. Indeed, she says she's often asked by incredulous Americans how people with few numerals know, for instance, how many children they have. When she asks this of the Amazonian tribe she works with, "they look at me like it's a weird question. They list the names, they count on their fingers, but they don't go around with a quantity in their heads," she says.

But once a society becomes complex enough to require more abstract counting, higher numerals are needed. Amazonian languages add numerals when groups that don't know or trust each other begin trading goods and need to track exchanges more closely, Epps says.

...The upper limits of these Australian numeral systems most often varied between three, four, and five, the team reports this month in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Over time, even small numeral systems sometimes lost a numeral or two, but they mainly gained numerals-yet not by plodding up the number line, one numeral after another. Surprisingly, they tended to acquire numerals in bunches, leaping from five numerals to 10 or 20, for example. The numeral five was often the tipping point-once a system reached five, it was likely to add more numerals, up to 20. As a result, numeral systems with five as an upper limit are rare in Pama-Nyungan languages.

Memo to ESPN: lose the bitches, such as Mute Button, commenting on the game. She refers to MLB players' injuries in comparison with her own, from which I infer she's a softball player (i.e., most likely a lesbian). I don't give a shit about her or her injuries, or what she thinks about the game, or indeed anything else. Fuck off.

Memo to MLB: you're not going to get more chicks to watch MLB just because you have a chick as commentator on the game(s). Think about it: would Tampax hire a man to increase sales by talking about what a bitch it is when the string breaks? Same principle.

And this is why philosophy matters.

I know the saint who floated that moral arc to history meme, and I want him ousted from the canon. There is not an arc to history. There is, however, an arc to physics: the second law of thermodynamics. There is your arc to history - entropy, decadence, disaster. That false saint was an avatar for chaos.

Morality has to be worked for. Life is a neverending struggle for order. Every generation of leftists thinks that this time is different; that they have outsmarted Plato, Aristotle, Polybius, and Ibn Khaldun.

86 Corrupted: The Holocaust Museum Declares The Muslim Brotherhood Likely Victims of the Next Genocide

I was always against the idea of a Holocaust museum getting special treatment in the nation's capital, to begin with. The US had nothing to do with the Holocaust and it is not to this nation to build museums about it or support them in any way. And, for private individuals (who can build any museum they want on land they have leased or bought) there is no reason to build one here. It is pathetic.

Further, the Holocaust was not so much about the people killed (people are killed in the millions all the time) but about the fact that the veneer of civilization can be stripped away from an advanced culture in a matter of minutes and reduce them to drooling savages. THAT is the real lesson of the Holocaust. The Germans were the epitome of sophistication in the 19th century and quickly devolved into the most brutal, insane animals within a moment's time. THAT is the moral of the story.

Fair enough. I expect commentators to be a) players who've played the game (i.e. MLB), and/or evince knowledge about the game, or ideally c) both. Retarded MLB players (i.e., the vast majority of them) and people who haven't but offer a succession of banalities about it, need not apply.

Hell, I could provide better commentary than Mute Button. I played the game (baseball, not softball, for the record) through college, and could pontificate at least as well as Mute Button. She compares MLB players' injuries with her own (as though we give a crap) and blathers facing a 90+ mph fastball. Has she ever done that? I doubt it. Now if she wants to pontificate on the geometrical and anatomical intricacies of scissoring, I totally defer to her experience. Otherwise, miss me with this crap.

What? Those don't exist? More Ukrainians died during the Holodomor (estimates run up to 10 million) than Jews died during the Holocaust, but the Ukrainians don't have the same PR clout. Also, recognizing the Holodomor would necessitate recognizing the role of socialism in causing it, and of Jews (e.g., Genrik Yagoda, founder of the NKVD) in implementing it.

Yeah, about that:

"Jerry Taylor is the president of the Niskanen Center, a think tank in Washington, D.C. dedicated to the advancement of liberty and pragmatic policy solutions."

"Pragmatic?" Oh, oh.

Turns out he's another lawyer libertarian who figured out which side of the policy debate has all the shiny silver dimes. He's now one of those pro-global warming and pro-carbon tax libertarians.

Again, fair enough. There's a difference between a color commentator and a play-by-play commentator. Of course the color commentator stands out; that's the whole idea. But a color commentator pretty much has to be a former player (i.e, someone who can provide "inside baseball" type anecdotes); someone who is not a former player, and therefore cannot provide "inside baseball" anecdotes ("inside the girls' shower room" anecdotes, while God knows interesting in their own right, are not in the same class) is by definition relegated to play-by-play commentary, where my comment stands.

170 The problem with commentators for Baseball is there's not much going on much of the time.

It's like combat; minutes of boredom punctuated by seconds of terror and excitement.

But commentators are intrinsically talkers and talkers (well) gotta talk. So they wind up talking about shit you really aren't interested in and distracting from the play. Or they tell some story that gets you paying attention to them and not the play on the field and BOOM! something happens and you miss half of it.

They need to start paying commentators by the LESS they say and tell them to quit filling the silences. Not enough to freak out the stations managers but enough for everybody to pay attention TO WHAT'S GOING ON!!!

And yes, women yakking about a sport they've never played and never will is the height of pandering. To who, I haven't figured out yet. Does anyone's wife let them watch more baseball because some cutie pie is yaking away about it?

I don't think so.

My brother.
A good commentator can bring out aspects that are not immediately apparent to non cognoscenti. You see this most often with football, where the natural tendency is to follow the ball, and to miss the intricacies of the blocking, pass routes, coverage, etc., things a commentator can point out.

Unfortunately, good commentators are the exception, rather than the rule.

193 Okay everybody, since I like ya... ;-)

Okay, just got back from seeing "Pawn Sacrifice." Pretty good movie, was definitely more absorbing and suspenseful than I expected, and director Ed Zwick overall did a good job capturing Bobby Fischer's life/times as well as the American pride that was invested in the chess genius' 1972 face-offs against the USSR's Boris Spassky. Unfortunately... Fischer himself is *not* a very likeable character-- at best you feel sorry for him-- and his somewhat shadowy "attorney" minder (it's never revealed exactly who he's really working for, although it looks like the CIA) is far more an interesting character, although we never learn anything about him. Anyway, it's at least worth a look on pay-per-view IMHO if you enjoy suspenseful historical films, especially about relatively recent and/or Cold War history, as well as if you find playing the occasional game of chess enjoyable like I do.

He's done post season broadcasts before and I'm surprised he hasn't moved on to a bigger market.) Shifting gears like that is a lot harder than it looks.

He was.

For those people who don't know the geography of Oregon, running west-to-east -- there is the coast, some big mountains, a chain of little valleys with I-5 running through, a whole bunch of even bigger mountains, then a desert.

The section with I-5 running through it has towns like Medford, Ashland, and Roseburg along it -- metro areas of 208K (only 77K in Medford, proper), 20K, and 21K. It isn't until the Willamette Valley that things open up and you start seeing larger cities like Eugene and Salem. There are no airports capable of handling Air Force One in these towns, and a presidential motorcade on I-5 would both bisect the state and interrupt supply lines from Seattle to San Diego.

It would be an immensely irresponsible act for Preznit Shiznit to go to Roseburg for a political stunt......but, hey -- who are we talking about?

One funny thing I guess I could note is, while the paranoid Fischer is constantly being portrayed as convinced he's being monitored and taking apart phone after phone and other electronics...

Spassky, humiliated because he wins 1972 Reykjavik Match 1 by Fischer's stupid mistakes and Match 2 because Fischer doesn't show... starts yelling at the walls in his hotel room, which he *knows* ARE bugged: "I don't want to win this way!! I WILL NOT win this way!!"

238 I have never understood the street traffic shut downs that they enforce because a president is passing by.

It's plain ass ridiculous as so far NO ATTACK on a President has taken place on the street.

In and out of buildings is where it all happens.

And once on a stage and once on a podium.

The Secret Service has become the praetorian guard and it should be restrained a bit.

They just do that shit because they can.

I know I left the movie with sadness about how Fischer ended up, basically a hateful lonely anti-semite without a country. Bobby was, very unfortunately, treatment-proof; anyone who challenged him, he would brand as working for "them" and cut them out of his life.

244 224 For those people who don't know the geography of Oregon, running
west-to-east -- there is the coast, some big mountains, a chain of
little valleys with I-5 running through, a whole bunch of even bigger
mountains, then a desert.

In short, California writ small.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at October 07, 2015 12:13 AM (oKE6c)

I-5 runs through the Central Valley of California, which is wide and flat and handles detours well. Until the northern half of the state, with the Willamette Valley, I-5 runs through Oregon like 101 between Santa Barbara and Salinas -- skipping through narrow valleys and over significant mountain passes.

And gettin' up in the Cascades is nothin' "writ small". Did a romp through there a couple of years back where most of the day was above 2000'.

But, Bobby's so absolutely obsessed with the matches he's about to play, he barely enjoys the sex at all. He goes through the whole thing rattling off chess moves he plans for either himself or his opponents to make. Needless to say, the woman he's screwing with is beyond befuddled.

I once attended a live debate between Baptist theologian James White, and a Muslim, at a Presbyterian church. About half the audience was Muslim.

During the intermission, I needed to use the restroom, and had to wait about ten minutes as an endless procession of Muslim men pissed and washed their f*cking feet in the sink.

It ranked among the most disgusting, traumatising, unsanitary things I've ever seen. That more than anything in the debate convinced me that Islam must die.

I wonder how many libtards would rethink their position on Islam if they would actually witness grotesque shit like that.

The thing about that part of Oregon is that you go someplace like Crater Lake -- you start your day near sea level in somewhere like Salem (elevation 154 feet), you drive through a few 2000 foot whoopty-doosies (the 4310 foot Siskiyou Summit is the highest point on I-5 from Canada to Mexico). You get up into the Cascades where 2000 feet is the floor. Then you visit Crater Lake, where Rim Drive is a 33-mile loop between 6500 and 7900 feet overlooking the actual lake, which is at 6178 feet -- and the lake, itself, is 1943 feet deep. Then you drive back out of the Cascades....

By the time you've done a bunch of this, you feel like you've experienced elevation.

295 Interesting aside re Montgomery Ward. Note that the workers went on strike during the war :

Government seizure

In April 1944, four months into a nationwide strike by the company’s 12,000 workers, U.S. Army troops seized the Chicago offices of Montgomery Ward & Company because Avery refused to settle the strike, as requested by the Roosevelt administration because of its adverse effect on the delivery of needed goods in wartime.[7] Avery had refused to comply with a War Labor Board order to recognize the unions and institute the terms of a collective bargaining agreement. Eight months later, with Montgomery Ward continuing to refuse to recognize the unions, President Roosevelt issued an Executive Order seizing all of Montgomery Ward’s property nationwide, citing the War Labor Disputes Act as well as his power under the Constitution as Commander in Chief. In 1945, Truman ended the seizure and the Supreme Court ended the pending appeal as moot.[8]

Why respond to a correction with "people don't like being corrected" (his words may have been slightly different but my brain corrected those too) Shit do i want to sound like a dumbass eternally? I remember taking a slight dressing down from someone with experience as a compliment that the thought you could learn.

When it's obvious to everyone that shit's all going sideways, and it's difficult to tell the GOPers and social contacts who will stab you in the back from the fellow travelers and friends who will come through for you.....when even the simplest goddamned thing is stymied six-ways-from-Sunday from little bullshit roadblocks like phone problems.....

.....you just have to do your best to reach out and be there. And hope that your best is good enough. Hope that companionship can help ease the pain. Hope that a ready ear and a caring heart can help smooth a crisis into a plan.

And for all the 'rons of good will out there, I have some advice from the mother of our godkids: "be easy with yourself -- you know the soft spots and the world will be hard enough on you."

There are a few factors -- first, they start so late. Around 10 pm eastern seems like the sweet spot.

Second, the overall times are getting riskier. Hunkering down and lurking seems more and more reasonable every day.

Third, we have seasonal factors -- from elections bringing the trolls and mobys to Fall impairing the regulars.

Fourth, we have a variety of suspicious n00bs with odd personalities. Given that one such in May dropped a keylogger on me, this has resulted in far fewer freely-tossed links, much less give-and-take, and much more caution......and "caution", of course, equals "silence".

Fifth, and finally, I think we're all feeling a bit "old". Even those in their 30s. There hasn't been anything invigorating in a while, and the dragging-on crap has been....well.....dragging on.

And, fifth,

The biggest change I've notices is Maet's Sun-Thur. ONT's being posted well after 8 P.M Pacific, when before they were at 7 P.M. Pacific.

CDR M on Fri. and Sat. still posts around 7 P.M. Pacific.

The change for Maet has been recent. Sun.-Thur. I've now come to expect the ONT after 8 P.M., while on Sat. and Fri. I've expected the old 7 P.M. posting.

336 I was a Floridian before I moved to TX. I think I've mentioned this about a hundred times. Living through the age of Obama reminds me a lot of living through a big hurricane. You can't see a lot when you're in it. It's loud, it's noisy, things are hitting the house and the boards on your windows. It feels like everything might suddenly go pear-shaped at any time. You don't have access to information, and what little you can get isn't helpful. Are the roads washed out? Is the hill your house is on now an island?

You can't tell how bad the damage is until the storm is over and you go out and have a look.

We've got another year and a half before we find out exactly how fucked we are. Unless it all falls down sooner. Obama fatigue is like a really drawn out version of being stuck in the bathroom with a mattress over the bathtub, waiting for the rain to stop or the roof to fall in.

What I was going for was (1) Don't elect this guy or he'll do something awful about XXX; (2) Aw, fuck, you elected this guy and he'll do something awful about XXX -- probably something horrific like AAA, BBB, or CCC; (3) the elected asshole is pushing BBB about XXX, but probably wants CCC; (4) Will BBB pass? Will BBB pass? Will BBB pass? Oh, yeah, the GOPe is a bunch of losers and whores.....who were we kidding? (5) BBB can't work and will bankrupt us; (6) BBB is unworkable, and is being blenderized by fiat; (7) all the possible end-products of BBB are toxic, and are being spread in an aerosol cloud; ( The aerosol cloud of BBB are settling over the countryside, causing widespread death and destruction; (9) People are literally dying in the streets because they can't afford epi-pens due to BBB....

Anyone who was remotely plugged-in to reality could see this coming AT STEP ONE. Does every grinding horrific consequence add to that? Do we have to follow it to "everyone vomits every day, and some die"?

It's less PC, but it'd be a more interesting discussion if we debated how to load the tumbrel -- whether to put the doctors, insurers, bureaucrats, FDA, or legislators first. Recapping the latest increase in the "we're fucked" index isn't all that interesting to those of us who saw it coming.

That is one of the best descriptions of what we are living through. And I would add that we can't plan on fixing anything until we know the extent of the damage which Obama and crew are trying to keep hidden. One of the most essential things the next president is going to have to do is be brutally honest and let it rip. No pussy footing around but let the full extent of the criminality, lying, and incompetence be shown. Threats of jail, claw backs, mass firings, public apologies and full exposure are a must. And anyone saying "if so and so is elected I am leaving the country" will be presented with a plane ticket and their little suitcase to Buenos Aires and told GTFO now.

376 Eli-pens. Mine expired a couple years ago and I haven't replaced tgem. Fwiw, some insurance plans will still cover Auvi-Q, which is a different brand, same idea.

377 Another idea on epi-pen replacement if you have a sympathetic doctor: ask for a rx for epinephrine ampule 1:1000 strength and a 1cc tuberculin syringe. Bring it around in some kind of padded hard case.
This is what folks used to use before epi-pens were invented.
Won't help if it's for a kid's school though.

378 363 On a personal level, Americans and Russians can get along like you wouldn't believe. Both have a significant cultural center around what the US calls cowboys. John Wayne movies like "True Grit" can be translated with no problem.

Perhaps the fact that we both live in huge countries with a lot of wide open spaces, rather than in the dinky, fussy little Euro nations, makes us alike in certain ways. We both think big in good ways and bad.

Traditionally, though, it's been pretty sucky to be a neighbor of Russia's. Canucks and Mexicans should thank their lucky stars they share borders with us and not Russia.

379 Here, I'll say it; ABC

Anyone but Carly.

It's a TRAP!!!! -Adm. Ackbar (ret)

She's an insider trying to play as being an outsider.

Note her low measure in the polls even after all the help.

That's because voters know she's less honest than even Rubio.

Some think Rubio's salvageable. (I personally don't)

Carly would be a stealth Hillary. Same grating voice, no cankles but I bet she's a bitch to deal with personality wise. (and some have tales to tell that say that's so)

I mainly don't like her because she's too liberal in her views which have changed quite a bit since she started her run for President. Funny that. The Romney Syndrome.

I'll even accept Mr. Nice Guy Ben Carson. His mistakes at least will ones of omission and not commission.

When Trump pointed out her "face" he wasn't talking about how good looking or not she was. He was talking about what that face revealed on the inside. She will do anything and be anything to get elected.

380 This ONT is genius level ONT. It's going to take me time to get through it all, and to color in the pictures.

381 Lest we go overboard for Nathan Robinson calling it as he sees it, it's worth asking where he's taking this paper.

If his academic background is any clue, two Brandeis degrees (in African American Studies and Politics), a Yale JD and a Harvard PhD in process (Inequality Studies in Sociology), then the end point of this paper isn't likely to be a happy one. Not to judge a book by it's cover or anything...

383 The "lets rid ourselves of intellectuals because the don't help the poor" and produce subversive ideas thing is a staple of communist countries. Some of them take the ridding themselves part a little more seriously than others.

I shy away from philosophical agreement with Pol Pot.

384 I hope they form a human barricade on the highway Obama will come in on.

I at least hope they don't let him in there houses for his photo op.

They should at least show they're anger by turning their back on him.

Let the media hide that. Let them show that on tv 24/7

And I was right, He's doing the Jimmy Carter Giveaway and wants to give up Guantanamo.

I wish the Marines would just say NO. It's strategically important and it's a binding contract with Cuba.

If anyone ever votes for a Democrat while I'm still alive I'm gonna name them and shame them.

If I'm dead, I'm gonna haunt there asses.

I'd feel inclined shying away from Pol Pot if the "beautiful people" shied away from Hitler...

the end game of the AGW NKult's esires is ~75% of the Earth's population "going home"...

the AGW Kult wants to pick who goes home TD...

not even Hitler was that ballsy.

389 There's a "large crisis of suffering in the world today?" Compared to when?

There's always been a lot of suffering, much of it at least as horrific as what goes on today. What we have today that's different is a large crisis of stupidity. Philosophy, anyone?

390 I disagree with the end of Stephen's quote. I don't think that Obama wants us less involved, per se.

*I* want us less involved, for sure. I'm sick of sending US men to fight and die for worthless causes like Afghanistan. I don't think Obama actually feels this way. I think he SAYS this kind of thing, because it's red-meat for his base, but in reality?

I just think he's an ignoramus.

I think he truly believes that he is, indeed, "doing something," and that it is so much smarter than everyone else. In this regard I think Stephens nails it... but I don't think it goes beyond that.

Obama's a SCOAMF who doesn't know he's a SCOAMF. He thinks he's a genius, in fact. For the rest of his life he will believe this, regardless of the facts.

Worse: there will always be a sizable number of clowns who agree with him and support his madness. The Emperor will never, ever believe that he's naked...
