This Kid Really Wants His Jalapeno Bacon Mac and Cheese

He shows up drunk and carrying beer in a Coke bottle (what a grift!) and so is refused service at this market.

But he insists he wants his jalapeno bacon mac and cheese, and, let me tell you one thing Old Chap, he shan't be leaving until he gets his jalapeno bacon mac and cheese.

Things get progressively worse. Caution: lots of cursing.

I was going back and forth on this about the "shaming" thing. I have a few thoughts. First, the rule can't be that no one ever shames someone else; obviously, that's silly. You'd shame Hitler. Well, all but John Ekdahl would.

The rule is that people shouldn't rush to shame, and shouldn't be eager to indulge in what is, at its heart, cruel behavior.

But there does come a point at which someone's bad behavior is hard to excuse away. This kid winds up committing a few low-level assaults, in addition to the disorderly and drunken behavior.

In addition, this non-shaming ship on this drunken sh*t has already sailed, because this video has already gone viral.

So anti-shaming people: This one seems like a lost cause.

Anyway, here's this kid's nine minutes of infamy.

He was arrested.

12 I'm good with shaming, actually, for actual offenses.

You know - shaming people for doing things of which they should be, get this, ashamed.

The problem with "shaming culture" or "mean girl culture" is not the shaming of people. Rather, it is the shaming of people who have not done anything of which they should be ashamed.

This guy did something shameful - and he should be shamed.

I was struck by this the other day when watching Splash with the old lady: there's a point where Eugene Levy sprays a man's wife with a hose, and that man resignedly beat the crap out of him.

64 Here's my thing. I think shame is a powerful force that can and SHOULD be used to mold behavior. But public shaming like this bothers me. The guy's a douche and a criminal (courtesy of his behavior), but as far as we know this was a one-time lapse in judgment. There's no reason it needs to be made international clickbait.

To that end, my problem lies more with the people who are standing around watching or recording this nonsense on their cellphones instead of, I dunno, telling the guy to calm down or walk away or otherwise attempting to help diffuse the situation. Shaming doesn't need to go viral ALL THE TIME. "This guy acted like a dick. Don't be a dick" is not a lesson that really needs to be broadcast worldwide. We all run into enough dicks on a daily basis to already know it by heart.

On the punch in the nose culture...yes, I agree...

BUT

It's also true that allowing a punch in the nose culture normally necessarily carries with it a very strong risk of the "Veto of the strong" where people are punched in the nose, not for something they did that was objectively offensive or shameful, but because they are saying or doing something that the puncher subjectively doesn't like.
You may wellend up back in some variantin the old days when people hired professional fighters to fight their case in trial by combat, when trial by combat was supposed to be a test of themoral rightnessof the proponent or opponent and instead was just who was the best swordsman.

Some companies that take advantage of cheap illegal labor do fund immigrant groups, but AFAICT the largest supporters are Mexico's elite billionaires, who make scads of money off fees on communications, travel and remittances.

They really loot these people good and hard, and then they lobby and bribe American politicians to keep the loot flowing (their own government is already entirely beholden to them).

I do kind of marvel at how *little* this is brought up. It's a massive scam, as always, made possible by corrupt governments.

Agree. The only problem with shaming now is that it is broadcasted to the whole world and lives forever. Shaming people is good, but in the past it was sort of limited - to the community and in time (as people forgot some of the details). Now things live forever.

"I have these cuts and bruises all over my body,
I must have fallen down somehow,
but no, wait it's all coming back to me now.

As the saying goes, all publicity is good publicity.

Viral shaming, much like wall-to-wall press coverage of mass shootings, seems to have the opposite effect. Thus, we have the Kardashians.

Shaming is necessary to maintain a polite society. And I'm talking about public shaming.

If we shamed more, and called out the weirdos more, we'd have less Dylan Roofs and Chris Mercers going around shooting people.

If we, as a society, had any balls and any sense of self-preservation instead of looking the other way, we wouldn't have to live under the constant threat of mentally deranged homicidal maniacs.

A culture shut off from objective, absolute ethical standards however ends up with either the strongest man making the rules or the biggest mob.

nonsense, you can never hope to convince people that your reasons for shaming are good reasons and theirs are bad; what you are then talking about is rewriting someone's entire moral and ethical programming from the first global lines of code.

That's not going to happen. The most that can be asked for is a neutral ethic (as far as choice-of-morals) that says "leave people alone and stop shaming them, period, except in the most serious of cases."

Otherwise it's just two groups of people saying "We have the right to shame for OUR reasons"/"No, WE have the right to shame for OUR reasons" for all of eternity, making everyone miserable.

If you parents or God have not instilled a conscience in you by age 18, guess what: you're not going to have one, and nagging isn't going to provoke a conscience in someone.

I find it silly that people on the losing side of the culture wars (yes, you, me, we've LOST) continue insisting on this magical time to ocme in the future where we'll get to do our preferred shaming again.

It's gone. Who knows, maybe that day will come in 20 years, but for the foreseeable future, it's gone, so will everyone please stop pretending it's still here.

I find it silly that people on the losing side of the culture wars (yes, you, me, we've LOST) continue insisting on this magical time to ocme in the future where we'll get to do our preferred shaming again.
So, its a pendulum. It'll swing back because the orcs always go too far. But it'll take a long time and we may not see it. So yeah, you are correct, but that doesn't make it not sad. It doesn't make me wish it wasn't true and it doesn't make me want to raise my children differently. See, I have kids. I can't really "enjoy the decline" of western civilization.I have to pretend its not happening, at least not undermy roof, but it is. Its literally, a greek tragedy. Think about that a while.

286 It's fairly common that you can't bring a drink you've bought elsewhere into someplace that sells drinks.

This especially applies to alcohol.

They'll make you leave, they'll ask politely, and if you just go outside and dispose of it they'll let you back in no hard feelings.

Unless, of course, you're an asshole about it.

He said at one point he already paid for it. If that's true they should've just given him the stuff to go and told him to go.

I think he was just seeing how far he could push this manager guy because the manager guy was being too nice. To some dicks this is an indication of weakness and they'll try to push harder to see where the line is.

I agree that the shaming gig is just way more destructive than useful, and it can't be "turned to your goals" because it's not ever really under control unless you're coordinating with the press (as if).

But the larger number of shamers are just shaming what their tribe says to shame, just retweeting Kneel-in-the-Grass Tyson or some lefty actor or whatever.

So a lot of it is not a held value system so much as loose tribal identity - cue the man-on-the street interviews showing Trump supporters agreeing with Obama policies *and vice versa*, when they are presented as being the ideas of the person they support.

I don't know that this actually solves anything, but there it is.

309 Shaming is really about shaming something for something *unrelated to* or at best tangentially related to what your disagreement is about.

If you tell us here that we should never watch NBC, and then rave about The Blacklist on another site, it isn't shaming you to publicize those other posts. Because it isn't trying to shut you up. Those other posts are directly related to the current discussion, and I would expect you have a reason for them that is germaine to the current discussion.

Or maybe you're just a hypocrite, and that's important, too. There have to be times when hypocrisy is a valid argument. A prosecutor whose tough-on-crime campaign targets prostitution while he secretly takes part in the trade himself. A muck-raking journalist who assails his target for lying while he secretly fakes their responses in interviews. An industrialist who praises the cleanliness of his factories, while refusing to let them build in his neighborhood because he secretly knows that they aren't clean. Legislators who create laws while exempting themselves.

But these all have some important attributes in common: there's secrecy, the hypocritical stance fuels corruption, the secret behavior is ongoing, the hypocrite uses their hypocrisy to engage in hypocritical behavior, or the people they're targeting are falsely accused of the behavior even as the hypocrite does it themself or expects to do it in the future.

311 You can't handle the truth! Son, we eat in a world that has meals, and those mealss have to be served by men with tongs. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Freshman Lebowitz? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Gatti and you curse the Marketplace. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that running out of jalepono bacon mac n chesse, while tragic, probably saved food. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves food! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me in that kitchen. You need me in that kitchen. We use words like "spice", "stir", "serve". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent cooking something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and eats the very meals that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a spoon, and stir a pot. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

318 >>>So you don't accept the idea that there are objective standards of behavior that when violated are deserving of support from the culture in the form of public ridicule?

no not really, not unless 1, it's an actual political actor (in a broad sense; media figures are definitely political actors) or 2, truly egregious that it warrants plucking a civilian out of obscurity and subjecting him to the horror of the national coordinated two minute hate.

I don't really believe that "shaming is a tool" you use to shape other people.

You guys (us guys) get shamed by the left all the time; how's that workin', as far as modifying our beliefs and behaviors?

Behavior gets tweaked, belief gets even more intense to make up for it.

No one likes being bullied around by people they have not acknowledged as their direct peers or people they generally trust. (Actually no one much likes THAT, either, but we at least accept that.)
