They aren't so eager to document those cases where they are stopped. August 30, 2010Do civilians with guns ever stop mass shootings? Naturally, such examples will be rare. Even in states which allow concealed carry, there often aren’t people near a shooting who have a gun on them at the time. Many mass shootings happen in supposedly “gun-free” zones (such as schools, universities or private property posted with a no-guns sign), in which gun carrying isn’t allowed. And there is no central database of such examples, many of which don’t hit the national media, especially if a gunman is stopped before he shoots many victims.... Still, for whatever they are worth, here is a list of some such incidents (which deliberately excludes killings stopped by people who were off-duty police officers, or police officers from other jurisdictions, at the time of a shooting, as well as some other cases which struck me as borderline): It Doesn't Always Work Out ETA: The validity of this account is in dispute, see update from poster Blue Falcon, post #24 below. This is so strange to get a gun thread today. I'll take it!
"Do civilians with guns ever stop mass shootings?" Insty pointed out that by definition they don't; when civilians are involved, there's no "mass" (4+ shot) shooting. Mass shootings are what you get when you wait for gov't to "fix" things. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at October 06, 2015 07:11 PM (0NdlF) 5

That sir, was a clean score at the range. Very well done, indeed.
Just reminder of the old saying: The Germans brought the best Hunting Rifle to WW-1, the '98 Mauser. The Yanks brought the best Target Rifle to WW-I, the 1903 Springfield. The Brits brought the best BATTLE RIFLE to WW-I, the SMLE. One is never undergunned with any variant of the "smelly". Either in terms of pure ballistics, or raw firepower. A skilled shooter can run that bolt and put rounds on target, at a rate virtually indistinguishable from a shooter of similar skill with a typical .Mil platform of similar caliber in semi-auto mode. Sadly, such skill is a diminishing thing, in that our yoot simply never learn to run the bolt in any proper fashion. Still, I don't despair. I'm glad that SMFH's young troopies can run their ARs with the skill and aplomb so amply demonstrated in the sandbox. Our enemies think they have the better of us. Oh, really? Will they still think so after they try to engage us en-masse, on our home turf? Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at October 06, 2015 07:18 PM (McRlu) 19

Found another local news station which disputes the story:
http://tinyurl.com/onq6ndm "HOUSTON -- A man was carjacked and beaten after he walked out of the Valero gas station late Saturday night in northeast Houston. But someone else who witnessed the crime helped end the attack. The attack happened on Kelley at Jensen around 11pm. A man said he was hit on the head near a bus station on the edge of the parking lot. A witness saw what happened and as two suspects got in the man's truck to escape, the witness pulled out a gun and shot at the departing truck. The suspect ditched the truck about three blocks away. Police found blood inside the truck. Investigators aren't sure if the blood belongs to the suspect or the truck's owner. The truck's owner is in the hospital recovering. The witness who shot at the suspects didn't wait at the Valero for police to arrive. Police, who are still looking for a suspect, want to speak to the witness for help in their search." I can't wait to shoot it, or at least I couldn't until I priced out .303 British. Oy Vey! The cheapest I found was $.70/round in 500 round lots. I still can't wait to shoot it, but damn, that's a lot of money going up in smoke!
I thought that was normal for centerfire ammo.... My first modern rifle was an Ishapore SMLE, bought as a SHTF rifle for the reasons Jim mentions - it is a bolt action that can fire almost as fast as a semi-auto. I finally upgraded to a No. 4 mk 1* just recently - unlike my SMLE, I think I can reload for it, which will greatly help the ammo price problem. Added bonus: The .303 British was originally designed as a black powder cartridge. At some point I hope to do some experimenting in that area. It looks to me like bolt-action rifles were designed for right-handed shooters. Your right hand goes from the trigger to the bolt and back again, while your left hand keeps it on the target.
With a left-handed shooter, your left hand would always be on or near the trigger, while you'd have to take your right hand off the forward stock to operate the bold, and then you'd have to aim again. That sounds less efficient. Posted by: rickl at October 06, 2015 07:46 PM (sdi6R) 67

Just a random video, actually. There is one showing the same rate of fire, or close to it, off-hand.
The trick is that the trigger is pulled with the middle finger, while the thumb and forefinger never let go of the bolt. That, plus the short stroke, 6o degree pull, the easy opening of a cock-on-closing action, the placement of the bolt handle, and the ten-round magazine in the Lee-Enfield design, make for a pretty rapid rate of fire. You sling up with the pseudo mil-spec .308 or similar caliber semi-auto rifle of your choice. Iron sights, only. Infantry spec slings allowed, specifically disallowing National Match or other pure target sling systems. Polls in Iowa and NH suggest a very good election chance for the GOP, bearing in mind the big limiting factor that hardly anyone trusts them either.
Speeches from Hillary advocating confiscation of guns would just about seal the deal, so she probably won't do something like that. Instead, we probably will get something like that from Kevin McCarthy or Yertle. Posted by: MTF at October 06, 2015 08:01 PM (CWvyb) 95

I got a new toy this week.. As some of you may know, Classic Firearms somehow bought out Pat Brown's remaining stock of M39s and is selling them in lots. I missed out on the first lot, but was able to get a luck-of-the-draw VKT. I did request a nice stock. That very evening I found a thread on GunBoards where the people who purchased in the first round were railing about how the rifles were not as described and that they had been ripped off. Hand-selects with broken stocks etc. I was like 'Oh Shit, $350 down the drain'. Later I read a statement by Classic that they are now trying to get their reputation back by replacing the rifles without question and they said that they would be extra careful with the second batch. Hope Rises. Monday the UPS brought mine and I was super apprehensive. But Rejoice! my worries were for naught. I got a 1942 VKT, on a 1911 Tula hex receiver, in a 1960s stock from the last arsenal refurbishment. Great metal (as I found after removing globs of cosmo) and there isn't even a handling mark on the lower stock. The upper handguard appears to be from the original stockset and has a very few marks on it and a tiny crack in one of the grains. I am very happy and relieved. I even ordered a couple of thousand rounds of 182gr Yugo to feed it for life. I cannot wait to get it out to the range.

U.S. counter-terror officials have asked Toyota, the world's second largest auto maker, to help them determine how ISIS has managed to acquire the large number of Toyota pick-up trucks and SUVs seen prominently in the terror group's propaganda videos in Iraq, Syria and Libya, ABC News has learned. Toyota says it does not know how ISIS obtained the vehicles and is "supporting" the inquiry led by the Terror Financing unit of the Treasury Department -- part of a broad U.S. effort to prevent Western-made goods from ending up in the hands of the terror group. Many years ago , I'm talking early 60's some of our local enthusiasts were shooting surplus rifles , mostly 03 Springfields , some Mausers ,with reduced charges and cast lead bullets . They were getting scarey groups with those old rifles . I'm talking ragged holes with 10 shots at 100 yds . I wonder if enfields have that kind of potential . With reduced powder charges their brass was practically everlasting and barrel erosion was non existent . Of course velocities were also greatly reduced , probably around 1200 fps as opposed to 2700 for a military cartridge , still , I wouldn't want to get hit by a 180 grain soft lead pill at 1200 , that'd smart . Soft lead at low velocities really grips rifling and is capable of extreme accuracy at short ranges as poor Tommy discovered during the revolution when encountering Pennsylvania rifles in American hands .

The .303 ammo is expensive but it is a great round for hand loading, especially for targets using cast bullets. For light loads out to a hundred yards or so, Unique or Red Dot (Promo) powders will do the job. Slug the barrel to be sure of the correct bullet diameter needed, those old bores can vary a lot from gun to gun. An inexpensive Lee single stage press will do everything needed. Except for the occasional full length resizing, even a Lee Loader Kit (neck sizes only) will do the job. One of the many benefits of bolt action rifles. With these low pressure loads or even more powerful loads you cab get a good number of reloads for each case.
Reloading doesn't always save money but in this case it should. And I like reloading. It's another enjoyable and useful part of the hobby. Posted by: JTB at October 06, 2015 08:26 PM (FvdPb) 142

And don't forget that besides being armed to also have situational awareness.
Be aware at all times of your surroundings. Don't fixate on where you are going, keep your head on a swivel. Just by turning your head 45 degrees you can see a lot behind you. Look up too. People don't look up and around. Identify individuals that will be in your danger area and judge they're threat level. In areas known to be problematic (and wtf are you doing there anyway?) be especially aware of places people may hide while awaiting you. Walk near the gutter or in it. Cross the street randomly to check out your back trail. Remember the zoomies motto: WATCH YOUR SIX! Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at October 06, 2015 08:33 PM (x3GpS) 152

Is there an appreciable difference between .3 caliber level rifle and a .223/5.56 rifle in terms of taking someone down?
Any studies done comparing say how the WWII rifles did versus the M16/AR platform? 1) That is a pretty open ended question. I don't think that there is any doubt that the .3 calibers are better/more accurate at ranges over 300 yards (bigger bullet means more inertia for a given velocity, the better for energy retention and bucking the wind alike). At closer ranges I think (but don't know for a fact) that the .3 has better penetration - 5.56 will deflect badly upon hitting drywall ( http://tinyurl.com/nuy5aco ). Effects on humans are harder to calculate, and my vary a lot depending on the type of bullet. 2) We still use bolt-actions, mostly based on the mauser action, for sniper rifles. That is all I've got.
Try reaching around the stock to work the bolt with your left hand. that is how the sniper dude in saving Private Ryan shoots, IIRC. That is where a straight bolt handle has an advantage over a bent one. They also make left-handed actions, I think. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 06, 2015 08:50 PM (bZ7mE) 217

While the width of the pistol and holster, along with how broad your shoulders are, determine how easy it is to conceal under thin clothing. I have about 3K rounds of .303 as well. about 1K of Indian mfg from the late 1930s that is really clean and reliable. The other 2K are loose, mixed headcase in various conditions from clean to corroded that I need to sort though and pull the bullets on the corroded. Another bit of advice, Chemjeff, which may or may not be utterly insane: Get a gun that appeals to you, whether it be aesthetically, or its historical connotations, or because it conjures of those boyish daydreams of heroism. The reason I say that is because I think that if you like the gun for its own sake you will be a lot more motivated to spend the time and money practicing with it.
That is the reason why I went with a 1911 over a modern polymer pistol, despite the fact that the latter was cheaper and possibly more efficient- wood and steel with old-school craftsmanship, combined with a sense of nostalgia, got me excited about buying a gun. Black plastic didn't. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 06, 2015 09:01 PM (bZ7mE) 265

>wait to shoot it, or at least I couldn't until I priced >out .303 British. Oy Vey! The cheapest I found >was $.70/round in 500 round lots. I still can't >wait to shoot it, but damn, that's a lot of money >going up in smoke! That's why you reload. Surplus M2 ball ammo for my M1 Garand starts around 65¢ (and that's for Berdan-primed ammo that's a pain in the ass to reload, though a couple lines down I found non-corrosive Boxer-primed ammo for 74¢), and most commercial .30-06 isn't recommended for use in a stock Garand. By comparison, I can get bullets for 10¢, and primer and powder add a few more cents to the cost of a reload. Even if you don't start reloading right away, police up all your brass and save it for when you do. It's the most expensive component by far, and military brass is likely to be stronger and more reloadable than commercial brass (at least for .30-06, and probably other types of military origin). And the FBI has come out and said that after extensive testing, the larger calibers DO NOT have more "stopping" power than the 9mm.
they tested for wound channel/damage and found that using a .40 or .44 or .45 did not make enough difference to justify the extra cost. The only time you can reliably stop someone is to hit a large nerve bundle and that's mostly aim and the amount of clothing/protection the target has on. I've read some folks complaining about the way a .40 snaps back ruining their aim and the .45 is basically a hand cannon and not for anyone with a weak grip. ChemJeff,
I don't own but I've been doing research and much of what you'll read on the internets is similar to the advice above. Some advice that I've found common to other boards/threads: As Bitter Clinger wrote: Consider starting with a .22 rifle; the basics you learn will aid you on almost every other platform. As ManWithNoParty wrote: Go to a range, take the safety course, rent a few styles. And then go back and do it again. Take notes. Caliber: A ) some recommend starting on the 9mm caliber or even .22 to avoid developing bad habits like flinching. B ) larger calibers aren't necessarily better for homedefnse, etc. Because C ) bad habits and not wanting to practice are the worst combination. 2 rounds of well-shot 9mm beats 6 poorly shot .50 anyday of the week. Style: pistol v. revolver, 1911 vs. striker fired, etc; again you can make the decision yourself after operating a selection of each. Each have the pluses and minuses. Bigger isn't necessarily better, neither nor is the reverse true. There are too many variables involved; weight, grip size, grip style, covers, bore axis, external controls, reloading, safety measures, etc. to make simple suggestions like "you should buy the CZ 75B." You probably don't know that there are laws which limit the carry of knives, but there are.
In NC, strictly speaking, you can carry pretty much anything except for a switchblade IF it is not concealed or at a political rally or for the purpose of 'terrorizing the public." So, strictly speaking, I could strap on a bowie knife or a Scottish dirkto go shopping, but I carry anything but a common pocketknife in my pocket I am committing a felony... I don't think that I am going to be grocery shopping with my big sheath knife on any time soon, though. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 06, 2015 09:18 PM (bZ7mE) 323

101 My two ideal SHTF guns ATM are a 1911 pattern in .357-no seriously it's a thing. Coonan is the maker. That and a lever gun in the same caliber.
The Coonan is pricey-starts at just under $1400-so the fallback is a revolver Posted by: Chico Escuela Coonan also makes very nice FAL receivers. I have a Coonan .357 1911 shirt somewhere I got with my receiver...aaaaaaaand now I have a boner. Posted by: Oedipus at October 06, 2015 09:19 PM (CXLVd) 325
.357 Mag is a fine choice in most any revolver.
My S&W Model 28, Highway Patrolman with 4" bbl., is "minute of bowling pin" accurate from the bench, at 100 yards. That, with 148 gr. full wadcutter ammo. Vintage '70s, Super X, factory stuff. Estate sale a few years back. Soft lead, projectiles look just like a 55 gal. oil drum. Hollow base on 'em, so that the propellant gasses obdurate the bullet, expanding it tightly into the rifling. With those "bunny fart" loads, there isn't much more than a .22 lr level of recoil, and they cut a "paper punch", clean round hole into any paper target you're using for practice. Then you can step up to most any .38+P load. High pressure .38 Special rounds, which are actually far less "hot" than any average .357 Mag. loading. But plenty enough sizzle for good defensive work, if needed. Then you can get into "average" .357 Magnum loads. The traditional 125 gr. Federal (for example) JHP (jacketed hollow point) is a great and highly proven defensive load. More traditional is the 158 gr. JHP, but that extra recoil isn't new-shooter friendly. My round of choice is the Winchester Silvertip, 145 gr. in .357 Mag. About a "7.5" on the "heat" scale as .357 loadings go. Very effective, very accurate, and very, very consistent in trajectory, point of impact and low variation from lot to lot. At the top of the scale are the low weight, ultra high pressure and velocity rounds from CorBon, or the heavy weight, high pressure, high recoil and medium velocity rounds from Buffalo Bore. The later are very popular for those who hunt large game with their handguns. In short, there's very little that a quality .357 revolver cannot do, and do very well indeed. Finally, good luck on finding .32 ammo in the wild. It's considered obsolete, and there's just not that much of it to be found on the shelves. But the .357 will let you shoot any .38 Special or any .357 Mag round, and those are as common as a politician's lies. One gun? .357 Magnum revolver. S&W, Ruger, Taurus or Rossi are all good choices. Damn Colts have become so stratospherically priced, as to be out of the running in practical terms. I highly prefer the S&W "L" or "N" frames. But to a new buyer, I'd point 'em to the Ruger GP-100. Absolutely indestructible, accurate and beautifully made. Maybe not the jewler's grade trigger of the S&W, but close enough. Hell, I'm gonna add one to my doomed canoe of a gunsafe, so I'll be putting my money where my keyboard is, too. Good luck, y'all! 181: I took a few V-22 rides with a bunch of no-shit ninjas from MARSOC for work. One of 'em actually hurled and the rest of the team razzed him about it for the rest of the day pretty much. Funny thing is, it's a lot smoother ride than a '53. The one weird thing about it is when it "shifts gears" from helicopter mode to airplane mode. The prop/rotor things actually change speeds as the nacelles rotate forward from "helicopter" speed to "airplane" speed--I don't remember which is faster but it makes an unnerving ka-THUNK when they do it. I have a backpack on it with a hydraulic fluid stain on it from that trip (remember: don't worry about leaks--that means there's still fluid. Worry if the leak stops.)

Dave, Thanks for this thread. Those old mil-surp bolt actions rifles are wonderful and, if in good condition, are probably better and more versatile than most modern rifles. (The Garand gets honorary inclusion just because.) 03 Springfield, SMLE, Swedish Mauser and Mauser 98: outstanding. The Mosin is tough but not made to same high level.

I have an antique built on an 1896 Izhevsk receiver that I got from Pat Burns back when they still had antiques in stock. Insanely accurate, and downright giggle-inducing when you shoot. Pound of sand in a good sock.
It's better than a club or a sap because there's no sharp edges. It's sharp edges that breaks bones. The sand conforms to the strike area and delivers the energy uniformly. Hit someone in the right spot and they'll fold like a cheap camera. They'll at least know they've been hit and you don't have any pesky bruises or broken bones in your hand and it's easy to dispose of before the cops show up. Or so I've been told. Grammie Winger,
you'd do just fine. We have a place on the river that gets broken into a lot. We were there one night, checking on this van. We have a lot of Russian/Eastern Europeans out here and there were a few in that van. One of them started ranting about how that was HIS place and we needed to leave. I got out of the driver's side, held up my .22 revolver so that it was visible and started telling them that they needed to leave. Another fellow in the van pulled the ranter inside and they drove off. We reported the license plate to the cops and they said they had been looking for them. They are suspected of theft and drug dealing. We are on good terms with the Moldovians, who fish for squawfish here and they said they would get the word out for these folks to stay away. We haven't seen them sense. Could I have shot them? Yes, if they made threatening moves towards us. It's a .22, but that's what James Brady was shot with. Sometimes, just the sight of a gun will resolve the situation. And we posted this story, to a Facebook friend asking if anyone had personally seen a gun resolve a bad situation. I've fired both the .32 H&R Mag and the .327 Federal Mag, the former in an H&R revolver, and the latter in a Ruger SP-101.
Neither are objectionable in those small-ish guns, even though the .327 Federal Mag has quite the sharp recoil impulse. But it's not a heavy recoil, and thus quite manageable. A revolver chambered in .327 Federal Magnum is "backwards compatible" all the way down to the ancient .32 S&W loading, making it theoretically more versatile than a .357 Magnum. That said, you can find .38 Special and .357 Magnum ammo pretty much anywhere. The various .32 loadings are more....shall we say....esoteric? Which you may translate as "nearly impossible to find." But if all you have to carry is a .32 H&R Mag, or better still, the .327 Federal Magnum, you are certainly not undergunned. On paper, at least, the 327 Federal Mag. can perform with, at least on "energy" terms, a basic .357 Magnum load. And usually gives you one extra hole in the chamber, a more than worthwhile bonus in it's own right. Now, if someone would make a Marlin type lever rifle in .327 Federal Magnum, they'd have a winner. I think the H&R Handi Rifle can be had in that chambering though. What a burner that'd be! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at October 06, 2015 09:55 PM (McRlu) 405

Here's the way it was splained to me. The AK was designed to be fired and poorly maintained by illiterate savages. While the AR was meant to be fired and PROPERLY maintained by somewhat more literate civilians beaten from plowshares into swords. I have one of each rifle and like them both immensely. Guess that makes me a moron. Posted by: Eromero at October 06, 2015 08:03 PM (go5uR) I remember when Kalashnikov died Duffleblog said that after being buried they expected to dig the man up a week later, hose him off and dose him with lots of oil, and he should be back functioning as good as ever. How does concealing a gun work out? How do you
avoid giving yourself away when hugging, for instance? Also, modern clothing fabric is quite thin, so how do you keep your gun from showing through? Posted by: Emmie 1. Only hug people who know you are armed. Wife prefers it that way. Strippers don't care. 2. 5.11 Holster shirt for under light clothing. Posted by: Anna Puma at October 06, 2015 08:29 PM (C6cTZ In 1938 the Beretta sub gun came out, and the 7.35 Terni (Carcano) was introduced, but the police would have had pistols, and the Caribinari would have had older guns, probably WWI 1891 and later variant 6.5 Carcanos if not the older 10.5 Vetterli Vitalis. I would guess the cops would have had the Beretta pistols, either in .32, 9 Glisenti (low powered 9 parabellum) or the later models in 9 Luger. I mean, way out in the sticks they probably had Caribinari units with 10.4 Bodeo revolver, but not in modern Rome. I will look for info on the Swiss Guard. Yeah, there's some super rare boxer primer sizes that come close enough to the standard berdan primer sizes that with some extra work and a lot of expense you can get it to work. "Why is .303 British so expensive, isn't it one of the most commonly used in the world?"
Used to be. Hundreds of thousands of rifles and millions of rounds of ammo from two world wars existed that were near worthless to their governments. UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, SA, etc. Surplus rifles and ammo got sold throughout the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90 's. Guns and ammo have started to run out. No great big surpluses of either. Found some of both in Afghan' in the 00s and there were largely destroyed as enemy weapons. Posted by: Ricardo Kill at October 06, 2015 10:53 PM (Iulmi) 537

It is common in Canada and Australia, but pretty esoteric in the US. Local shops want $28 a box (which is better than the $42 they had it for a long time!) PPU is about $15 a box online. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 06, 2015 10:54 PM (bZ7mE) 539

I had an enfield I inherited from my Dad. I never knew what model it was and only shot it once. It was stolen in a house burgle. The ONLY thing stolen the week after a party.
I was with my Dad when he bought it at the army surplus store in the '60s. I think he paid $50-90 for it with a few boxes of .303. Sigh. I looked up the price of different enfields a few months back at honor guns america and found the occasional $300+ price. Posted by: Daybrother at October 06, 2015 10:56 PM (PN44w) 541

You won't find an original for less than $500. You won't a collector for less than $1000k. They aren't cheap guns anymore unless you get a sporter. No more cheap ammo. You're looking at Prvi/S&B for $15-20 per box. No. 5s are $1500-3000. I've got a fake Cimarron carbine No. 4 in perfect shape. Don't think it was ever used. Glad to have. Love all the mil-surp, but the place of pride for any rifle in my safe goes to the various 6.5x55 Swedish Mausers.
And I'm working on a uber-expensive Commerical Mauser project which will be in the same chambering. I've got almost all the parts now. Next part? Saving up a few thou for the artists to make it all into a rifle. Gunsmith to put all the metal together. Engraving and inlays. Stockmaker. Custom late 1800's Whitworth style leather travel case. Museum quality, start to finish. And damn straight, I'll hunt with it. Used for it's intended purpose, no matter the cost. I thought the 7.35 was introduced before the 6.8.
Didn't the Italicans introduce the 6.8 in the late 30s, retire the 7.35s, and ultimately ship a bunch to Finland? Posted by: Ricardo Kill at October 06, 2015 10:34 PM (Iulmi) Yes and no. 6.5 was developed for the new nitro powder and used for WW1, the 7.35 Terni was developed because the 6.5 didn't have a lot of trauma (Hess was shot with a 6.5 through the chest and lived a good long life FX), the first batch went to Finland, then it was reconsidered, re developed and issued prior to WWII, then drawn back because of logistic issues and then sort of re-issued....but meanwhile the 6.5 was in various production models... It was the Italian Fascist army. I don't remember. They are Carcanos. I don't really follow them. They built 7.7 Jap carbines for a while too. Possibly for the Arab nationalists. I think they went to Finland instead. Posted by: Kindltot at October 06, 2015 11:32 PM (3pRHP) 558

555 ... Jim, That sounds like a dream rifle. My as issued Swede from 1904 isn't anything to look at but the rifling is sharp. I pity any rifle shooter who hasn't used a Swede. Easy recoil, flat shooting, great trigger, and a bolt that moves like glass gliding on oil. And more accurate than I'll ever be. Your custom project will be a gun for the ages.

Enfield SMLE. That's what it looks like to me. Had the pleasure of shooting one of those once... That is the smoothest and fastest bolt action ever invented. You can almost shoot it faster than you can a semi-auto like a Garand it's so smooth. Posted by: ConstantineXI at October 07, 2015 09:32 AM (Eov0o) 562
I have a Lithgow SMLE No. 1 Mk III* made in 1942. The Aussies never adopted the No. 4 which the Brits and Canadians adopted for WW2. My SMLE was a horrible bubba'ed rifle I bought from a pawn shop back in '79, my first rifle. Just last year, due to the influence of my younger son I removed the horrible monte carlo buttstock and badly chopped forstock and returned the rifle to origional configuration. Use ammoseek to find low prices on internet ammo. I've found grade A .303 for 0.40 cents a round and grade B for IIRC 0.20 cents. Yes, a SMLE or No. 4 can match a semiauto in the hands of a skilled users. It won't match an AR-15 with its low recoil 5.56 round, but recoil is a limiting factor with something like an M-1 Garand in .30-06, so the rate of fire can be similar and the SMLE has a 10 round magazine and can start off with another in the chamber for a total of 11. The Garand holds 8, so a well trained rifleman with a SMLE can keep pace. Posted by: DonS at October 07, 2015 11:41 AM (Q2pWM) 563
Steevy, .303 is no longer a military round. Surplus ammo is drying up. Same with rounds like 8 mm Mauser, etc. Posted by: DonS at October 07, 2015 11:44 AM (Q2pWM) 564
"I'm sorry guys, and no offense, but you can't fire a bolt action anywhere near as quickly as a semi-auto." Yes you can. The SMLE can give a Garand a run for its money. But it requires a skilled user on the SMLE. The key reason is the recoil, which limits the Garand's rate of aimed fire. A SMLE chambered in 5.56 wouldn't have a chance against an AR15. Posted by: DonS at October 07, 2015 11:53 AM (Q2pWM) 565
With respect to the Italian 6.5 the issuewith respect to poor terminal perfomance must have beenbullet design. I think that was also the issue with the Japanese 6.5, they went to 7.7. In the Russio-Japanese War a Russian surgeon mapped the brain based upon functions lost due to head wounds of the Japanese 6.5. The round nose bullets of the day didn't yaw much and produced a narrow wound channel. Posted by: DonS at October 07, 2015 12:27 PM (Q2pWM) 566
In Israel settlers, teachers, etc are often armed. Teen girls with uzis or M16s. Pretty much everyone is in the reserves. It isn't the armed wonderland it might seem to Americans, but certainly many have access to firearms. Also, Israel has become less socialist over the last few decades. This is also true for places like Sweden. Posted by: DonS at October 07, 2015 12:51 PM (Q2pWM) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0655 seconds. |
