82 Van Gogh and Gauguin were roomates when Van Gogh was doing his best work. Van Gogh was a big drinker, spent his money on prostitutes and didnt pay his bills like rent. This drove Gauguin crazy. They fought bitterly. There is a pretty widespread belief that Gauguin cut off Van Goghs ear, not Van Gogh. Also that Gauguin shot Van Gogh, it wasnt suicide. He left France immediately after that episode and went to Tahiti where he did his best work. But he may have been a murderer

84 But two German art historians, who have spent 10 years reviewing the police investigations, witness accounts and the artists' letters, argue that Gauguin, a fencing ace, most likely sliced off the ear with his sword during a fight, and the two artists agreed to hush up the truth.

In Van Gogh's Ear: Paul Gauguin and the Pact of Silence, published in Germany, Hamburg-based academics Hans Kaufmann and Rita Wildegans argue that the official version of events, based largely on Gauguin's accounts, contain inconsistencies and that both artists hinted that the truth was more complex.

Van Gogh and Gauguin's troubled friendship was legendary. In 1888, Van Gogh persuaded him to come to Arles in the south of France to live with him in the Yellow House he had set up as a "studio of the south". They spent the autumn painting together before things soured. Just before Christmas, they fell out. Van Gogh, seized by an attack of a metabolic disease became aggressive and was apparently crushed when Gauguin said he was leaving for good.

88 Kaufmann told the Guardian: "Near the brothel, about 300 metres from the Yellow House, there was a final encounter between them: Vincent might have attacked him, Gauguin wanted to defend himself and to get rid of this 'madman'. He drew his weapon, made some movement in the direction of Vincent and by that cut off his left ear." Kaufmann said it was not clear if it was an accident or an aimed hit.

While curators at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam stand by the theory of self-mutilation, Kaufmann argues that Van Gogh dropped hints in letters to his brother, Theo, once commenting : "Luckily Gauguin ... is not yet armed with machine guns and other dangerous war weapons."

102 Jim Geraghty today prints the single dumbest thing I've ever read over at NRO. Just mind-blowingly stupid:

I want the most conservative option as Speaker. Thus, when the most conservative Speaker comes back from negotiations with President Obama with half a loaf, or maybe somewhat more than half a loaf, I want the conservative grassroots to realize that sometimes that's the best that you can do. My suspicion is that conservatives will reject this and conclude their leaders buckled and sold them out, that they've been stabbed in the back by spineless leaders again, and so on.

To understand the complete silliness of this statement, imagine if this were written about sports (like Geraghty's beloved Jets) or writing, or any other human endeavor:

"We must accept totally mediocre performance because it is the best we can achieve! It isn't even worth trying to improve! Can't be done! Get over yourselves Jets fans (or fiction fans or conservatives), and accept fractured English coming from the mouth of a completely mediocre politician!"

I'm no great supporter of Jason Chaffetz but I am very strongly in favor of improving the quality of opposition to the Progressives. Geraghty should hang his head in shame for writing such patent nonsense as this.

Israel supporters in this country should be outraged, but I haven't really sensed even a ripple of outrage. This was an offense not only to Israel and to Netanyahu, but it was an offense to every Jew, especially every Jew who is a Zionist, but it is a huge offense to every Christian (I would think) who professes support for Israel.

The worst part of that is that it assumes two things which are clearly not true:

1) That Boehner was getting "half a loaf." The best he was getting was a single slice, and usually not that. Had he consistently been getting "half a loaf," the conservatives would not be nearly so pissed.

Which leads to...

2) That Conservatives don't understand that politics is "the art of the possible" and often requires compromise. We understand this quite well, actually. The problem is that our definition of "compromise" is "not getting everything you want, but getting certain key items." The DOPe's definition of the word is "not necessarily getting anything except to say, 'We passed a bill!'"

We would be *ecstatic* if the next Speaker consistently came back with half a loaf.

Well, when Geraghty writes something like that it becomes clear that they see all this as some sort of game. This isn't Stratego, you guys. When Obama screws the GOP there are consequences - things like Iran getting billions in unfrozen assets and assistances with nukes, our country overrun with immigrants to the point that it will fundamentally change our future.

This is not about scoring points, douchebag, and people are upset because *they* understand the real life consequences of the GOP's submissiveness to Obama.

Well, Boehner pledged to America he would cut $100 billion from the 2011 budget.

He cut $6 billion from the increase.

Which as everyone knows, -6 is 51% of 100.

Or Boehner's vote condemning Obama's unilateral Libya adventure. He waited two whole days to go golfing with him.

And there's all the votes he passed with Democrat help. That's very half a loaf.

Yeah, this is the 'fight the battles you can win' argument, that is often true enough, I suppose, but you at least have to probe the enemy at times to see if the battle might be won. And sometimes, you have the fight the battle even knowing you have no chance to win because it sets the enemy up for the next battle.

Republican leadership universally, or so it seemed, determined that every stinking battle that came up was unwinnable and so they came up with what seemed like hollow, weak, feckless arguments about why the battle shouldn't even be joined.

But what kills all of this for most of us I think is the sense that somebody else, possibly a raft of somebody else's, is pulling the political strings. We know already of the Chamber of Commerce's influence and my guess is that there are others pulling the levers behind the curtain.

THAT is what (at least some people like me) would like to see stopped.

I agree with everything you wrote, except for the fact that the DOPe does not even pass bills.

I was promised by Turtle and Boner that when they had the House and Senate they will be sending Obama all the bills that Reid was blocking.

Once they won, its like "we need to work with Obama", "we can't do anything without the Presidency", and "we need to respect the institution".

I have to wonder if at least some of the skills required could be learned at much cheaper franchised art schools, like the kind you can attend at night while working. I have a friend who did that after a long career in sales - he learned how to graphical web and printing design and has started a new career.

261 Thing to understand about Gabe is, while we joke a lot about DC cocktail party circuit, that's his actual life.

Which makes his solid pro-life stance surprising, but I imagine that issue is at least secretly more palatable at gay cocktail parties. The LGBTs all know they would've been aborted on sight if a reliable test were developed.

do to get the government's boot off the throat of the people and get the

The majority of the economists who are doing anything official are all Neo-classical theorists, like Krugman, who give lip service to Adam Smith and Ricardo, but believe that the power of the state can use the theories combined with market distortions to "achieve worthy goals" that the proles would never think of doing to their own benefit.
Not all believe this in the same intensity, but almost all of the argument currently is over how much intervention is needed not how damaging it is.

To release power over the economy is to loose power over the people. That is statesmen level thinking there. We don't have statesmen, we have big-government, corrupt politicians who faced with proof of plans of an invasion would rejoice because it means more tax money to siphon to their friends and supporters

That's assuming Choom Boy's spawn have any desire at all to actually work. If they do, they didn't get it from their parents....

More likely they will follow the "career" path taken by the Kennedy and Clinton babies: get pointless degrees, exploit their last names to slip into no-work "jobs" at inflated salaries and marry rich Wall Streeters who have the right yuppie credentials.

I'm sure that still happens, too.
It's just the difference between seeing it as focusing on learning the critical skills vs. a four year degree that is larded up with a lot of classes like "art critique."

My brother went to an excellent culinary school that was focused on skills - he was cooking meals for people from the get-go, and part of the 2 year degree was spent in an internship (where he was hired upon graduating). He was pset when the school later expanded it to a 4 year program with all sorts of extra fluff classes to justify the additional 2 years.

these top tier schools offer a lot of schloarships so that may reduce the cost a bit

my sister works in the film industry as a film editor. Self taught. No college. Been doing it for over 25 years. She sees these new hires, kids with 300 plus in student loans starting out in the same field.

you actually do not need a degree to work in many creative fields. Maybe the only worth of going to university is getting the network and connections

but the costs relative to what they will get paid doing the work, assuming they can find work, are extreme

Posted by: ThunderB at October 05, 2015 10:36 AM (zOTsN)

A film degree is largely an affectation. Considering the number of drug-addled retards making movies these days, I'm pretty well convinced that filmmaking isn't nearly as difficult Hollywood likes to pretend it is.

279 I'll make up my mind this week, I think. Maybe next week, I think probably by next week. But I might wait until later this month. Yeah, by the end of October sounds about right. Or maybe early November. I mean, late October, early November, what's the diff? Actually, with all the Halloween activities at the end of October, I'll be too busy to deal with this until November. And I'll be pretty tired from the holiday to make a decision right away in November. So maybe late November. But there's Thanksgiving, so I can't do it then. So maybe early December. So, yeah, sometime between this afternoon and early December I'll make a decision. What, what was it I was deciding on?

I'm less interested in the candidate than his supporters at this stage. If my original plan of Trump as Scourge of the GOP is morphing into something larger, I'm going to want a little more in the way of details of what we're dealing with. And frankly I trust Hordesourcing more than any of the traditional sources.

I've seen anti-Trump based on three things:

1) He's not serious. He's a vulgar clown

Reply - He is serious. He is spending a lot of money in building an actual campaign apparatus. He's spending a lot of time at campaign events in Iowa, NH, SC and moving to Super Tuesday states too.

2) He's a liberal Democrat stalking horse for Hillary

Reply: Trump has taken positions that have lead to a loss of income and personal attacks (cries of racism, etc.). There is no possible personal benefit to him for what he is doing, unless he really wants to be President with HIS policies.

3) He's flipped flopped on many positions, you can't trust him.

Reply - Some flip flops aren't near as bad as some make them out to be. Of all the people and groups he reaches out to, he seems to consistently go to the most conservative for policies.

I added vulgar clown at the last minute. What the last 8 years have clearly shown us is that the entire DC establishment is a clown show. Really, I can't look at anyone associated with the Federal Government, MSM, etc. and see anything other than buffoons and clowns.

At least Trump has shown some capability of implementing ideas and running a business to achieve them. That is VASTLY MORE than anyone associated with DC.

Yes, he's a vulgar. What have well spoken "serious" Presidents gotten us.
